Big Sideburns Optional

Simon Mayo|09:47 UK time, Thursday, 17 November 2011

A whole half-hour of merry chatter from the school runners (5 of them today), top topic for conversation was which is the most rubbish teacher and why did their team leave 10-1 yesterday? I could have had exactly the same conversations when I was at school. The answers I would have given at the same age would be a) they're all rubbish and b) because no one cares. I left that school soon afterwards to join the merry-go-round of education.

I followed all that with a cheery trip around London's most scenic roadworks and slow-changing traffic lights. Then, full of the joys and with a song in my heart, it is time to start the business of the day. Hello! Good Morning! Hooray for Thursdays!

(Today's blog accompaniment is the new Kate Bush album '50 Words for Snow' which I will need to live with for a while before pronouncing on. It is a very late night, smoky affair with each track a complex and intense epic. I don't think they are planning for too many hit singles...) Today we anticipate the deliciousness of an autumnal crumble. Even writing the words has set my stomach off (another borborygmus episode as we say on drivetime). The crumble has to be pushing the treacle tart for the king of puddings title and Nigel will deliver big time. I will demand extra portions as I then need to pop over to Shepherd's Bush to present the mighty Bellowhead with a silver disc for Hedonism. As they gave us the Sony for best music show, this seems only fair...

And songs today please for the art, science and application of ENGINEERING. There is a new £1 million prize for exceptional achievement so its BRIDGES, TUNNELS, ROADS and the world of ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL AND GEORGE STEPHENSON. You get the picture. And a million pounds for the best suggestion (no there isn't).

Have a well constructed and beautifully crafted Thursday. See you after 5

    Morning all,

DT team, bloggers, poppets and DT Dude keeping his cool at YET ANOTHER ROADWORK on his merry way around the Big Smoke.

We had a MARE of a return trip back from London last night, due to those pesky little rascals setting up roadworks on the A40 and also the M40, just to top it off. This meant that I happened to pass the Shepherd's Bush Empire, on the first diversion we took with the 'Bellowhead' sign overhead (advertising for today, course - which by then (1am) it was!

So I have read the blog from the DT Dude, and having no time to read back, will be suggesting

Greetings Mayo Man & ALL Blog Peoples...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

Mayo Mate (when a say/ write 'Mate' a don't mean it in a sycophantic way... Just in a friednly way and a feel it most apporpriate as 'Mate' begins with an em aka 'M' EXACTLY the same as 'Mayo' does.... 'ence 'Mayo Mate!!!!'..... Where was a????

    Oh I yeah.....

    Mayo Mate - WHATTA COINCIDENCE!!!!!!!!!!!

Terdee am 'eading ter London on something that was part invented by The Brunnel & Stephenson dudes.... Aka a train!!!!!!!!

Way better... then going by the shambles that is road travel.... Even though a make me living out of being a trucker.... A ALWAYS wanted ter be either a train driver or airline pilot!!!!!!! (love driving without being surrounded by cones, roadworks and bad drivers!!!!). (In fact ave even passed 2 train driver aptitude tests BUT sadly due to it being such a good job it's near impossible for a man of my low stature ter get on.... Even though ave showed BIG willing by taking 2 aptitude test!!!!! But sadly that is the madness of modern Britain!!!!!) (Am sure 70 years ago a would ave snapped up as a fireman (drivers mate/ coal shoveller) (but nowadees yerv gotta ave a degree in structural engineering, be 30k in debt as a result, and a failed structural engineer (even though yer wanted ter follow in the footsteps of The Brunnel, but can't)... or 'ave a relative already working on the railway even though PC/ employment laws claim ter make getting a job for all fair regardless of if yer know somebody already woking on the railway, race, etc!!!!!) (so it's normally somebody with a degree who ends driving trains who didn't wanter driver trains) (as for airline pilot probably not brainy enough at my end of the situation!!!!) (But be a great job as nowbody ter cut yer up when yer turning right!!!!!)

    Where was a again?????

Oh I yeah - Actually a can't remember where a was as a got carried away!!!!!!!

But a can remember where am going.... Am coming ter London terdee ready ter 'elp out with The Children In Need Radio 2 gig on Fridee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Complete with BIG sideburns (whatta coincidence r.e. yer title above... Although mine are not as BIG as The Brunnel or INDEED The Stephenson!!!!!)

So for appropriate tunes 'ow about:

    STEAM by EAST 17!!!!!!!

    MARRRRAKESH EXPRESS by THE NASH!!!!!!

LOVE TRAIN by FRANKIE GOES TER 'OLLYWOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MIDNIGHT TRAIN TER GEORGIA by THE DIAMOND!!!!!!!

or the other Neil Diamond tune, BEAUTIFUL NOISE where 'e sings the lyric "clickety clack of a train on a track!!!!!"

Or finally me favourite trian tune by:

    ROD STEWART and DOWNTOWN TRAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    'ope this 'elps!!!!!!!!!

PS Sorry a couldn't blog yesterdee.... A was out driving with a drivers mate with me, aka Barry, aka ex-gravedigger (as Road Stewart used ter be!!!)!!!!!!

Some stories 'e told me, during our 13 'our shift, including about 'ow 'e got sacked after 20 years digging after a mix up over the deased wife/ 'usband.... 100% TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A tell yer got some fresh ideas for me book.... learn alot from real life people/ characters!!!!!!!

There's alot out there a can tell yer!!!!!!!

    Bye! ;-))

'e was there again all.... Ave written about 'im on the CLP Blog before.... Aka possibly the world's worse busker!!!!!!

Every time a go through the subway from Liverpool Lime Street underground station upter the main station... The same busker is always there!!!!!

Ave just gone through on me way ter get the train ter London for the CIN gig at R2 termozz.... And yet again... 'e's there all!!!!!!

Been there for years.... And all 'e does is play a C major on 'is accoustic guitar.... 'alf 'eartedly up & down strokes... up & down C major... the same tune... And at the same time simply blow a quick blow of the 'armonica.... C major up & down stroke.... blow 'armonica... actually more of a squeak!!!!!

C major, up & down... 'armonica quick squeak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

'e was even there in June when a started me long, long, long journey ter Thailand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

'e was even there last year when a started me journey ter the CIN R2 gig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So am on me way ter London now... Absolutely love travelling on fast train although always VERY, VERY, VERY frustraited am not driving the damn thing!!!!!!

Always been me one long life passion ter do as ajob... but as am VERY near ter 40 years old now... looks like ave gotta tell mesen it's not gonna 'appen!!!!!!

Am in the rear carriage at the very rear as yer get the wildest ride there... Rear of the train wobbles from side ter side more at 125mph than the middle or front – love it... speed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am VERY 'appy & excited ter be 'elping out with Children In Need again this year, great ter see all the blog dudes. It's like a yearly blog meet even where most bloggies turn out. And at the same time maybe see & meet the odd celeb/ DJ (not that am saying celebs/ DJs are odd).

And the thing that make sit 100 times even more brilliant is it's all in the name of charity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And a kids charity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing, a must admit am a little sad a can't go to the Children In Need Wrocks Gig at the MEN Arena in Manchester tonight.... Me 'ero Chris Martin & Coldplay are playing ter name but one MEGA act on!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least a will be able ter watch it terneet live on BBC TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's just brilliant what the BBC do every year with CIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yer just can not imagine something so big and wonderful 'appening if the beeb was just another private company trying ter please shareholders and wealthy directors!!!!!!!!

The fact that so many celebs and famous people give up their time for free.... Like Chris Evans 'imself letting people drive 'is collection of AWESOME cars!!!!!!!!!!!

People like Gary Barlow organising the big gig in Manchester this evening!!!!!!!!

    It's all just so MEGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We really MUST make sure the beeb NEVER gets privatised – It's one of the great assets of Great Britain that is still part of the British public!!!!!!

Something the government 'ave not managed ter get their mucky 'ands on & sell off for a quick buck!!!!!!!

    WROCK ON THE BBC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    WROCK ON CHILDREN IN NEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    WE 'NEED' THE BEEB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
