A very naughty boy

Simon Mayo|09:38 UK time, Tuesday, 12 July 2011

Well child1 had many friends over last night to party and then they all went out. I cleared up a bit and went to bed to read a book. At some stage in the last few years, I have become my parents. Loudon Wainwright has a song on his 'Last Man On Earth' album called 'Surviving Twin' in which he laments this moment, although there's inevitably much bitterness with Loudon's relationship with his father. So how great to hear Rufus on yesterday's show talk of his concerts with his father. I have only heard one tune from the 19 disc sampler with father and son together, but it's the old Richard Thompson song 'Down Where the Drunkards Roll' and as Rufus said on the show yesterday, their voices are very different but blend beautifully together. When Child1 emerges (assuming he's back) I might suggest we sing a duet together, just to see what happens.

Top guest today with writer, Python and director Terry Jones in after 6. He wrote some great childrens books many years ago (The Knight and the Squire being one) and he has got excited about a new way of publishing called Unbound. Also there is talk of a new Python film. Well, sort of. It's an animated version of Graham Chapman's memoir 'A Liar's Autobiography: Volume 4' Terry will explain after 6...

And for some tunes today, let's try the SCHOOL SPORTS DAY. Hooray for the egg and spoon! Hey for the Sack and 3-legged race! Boo for the parents race! What could be more fun than cheering on our offspring and consoling them as they trip over their laces and finish 12th. Songs aplenty, we await your wisdom.

Have a relaxed and stressed free Tuesday, see you after 5.

Bad memories of a three legged race on the street party in 1977 ti celebrate the Queens Silver Jubiliee....the girl I was tied to forgot I was attached to her and she bulldozed ahead ...I tripped and hit my mouth on the Kern and cracked my front tooth in half and as I was only young at the time I had to have a silver crown for a year ...quite apt for the day it was!!!

Bit bleary-eyed this morning after a disturbed night's sleep, and on respite night too! *rolls eyes* Oh well, no rest for the wicked!

School sports days brought me out in a cold sweat when I had to participate in them, I was not a sporty child at all! I can still hear the ringing laughter of my cruel fellow competitors as I attempted the high jump, and instead flopped on the cane and snapped it in half!!

#38 - blimmin' good choice there Katy. I had the album that was on, the ex took it abroad with him and left it along with some other CDs that weren't his in the wardrobe. Despite promising, he never did replace them. Hmph!

I enjoyed sports day but purely because we were outdoors enjoying the lovely weather and not couped up in a stiflingly hot classroom. I also liked the 'nature trail' that our headteacher took the Primary 6 & 7s on - as you would expect we learnt all about plants and bugs, unfortunately, I have forgotten most of what he taught us.

    #39 - Midday did I say? A bit previous?

Anyone remember Bean Bags? And Hoops? They figured prominently in Junior School Sports Days - especially those whacky relays the teachers used to conjure up - pitting team against team ... in the days when it was fun to compete and come first and get the most points for your 'House'.

  • Comment number 44.

#39 It did cross my mind to suggest that one, Katy :D But I thought as Simon started the show with it yesterday, it might not get an airing today...But then it is Bruce after all! LOL

  • Comment number 45.

Thanks Toots [and Zoe and others who have welcomed me back] - our posts must 've crossed.

LOVE the Tom Petty song too.

One of those songs, a bit like ''Drivers Seat' that I'm always in the mood to hear. 'What is Life' is another one that falls into that category ...

  • Comment number 46.

#43 I remember the bean bags and hoops etc, I once had to complete a sprint in a relay race whilst balancing a bean bag on my head! Very Monty Python!! :D

  • Comment number 47.

  • Comment number 48.

    #44 Ah - I KNEW there'd be a good reason, Zoe :^)

    I hadn't looked at yesterday's play list ...

Yeah - bean bags on heads - skipping with ropes or hoops - lots of ball throwing - or am I thinking of an obstacle race. Whatever - it was enormous fun for the less 'athletic' amongst us.

Actually, I wasn't a fast runner but I was quite good at throwing things. For a girlie.

  • Comment number 49.

Yep I remember bean bags on heads but that was part of our normal PE session - they were usually grubby and stinky and I didn't want to put it on my head in case my Mum went mental at me for getting nits! Our sports day didn't feature bean bags or hoops. We had the potato and spoon race!?!, sack race, three legged race which I came third in with Elaine (I still have the cutting from the local newspaper - my Mum saved it for me), flat race, and for the Primary 7 girls, Catch the Train Race. You had to bring a suitcase filled with dressing up kit including high heeled shoes and an umbrella, the race started with the girls getting dressed, the umbrella opened, the suitcase closed and legging it to the finishing line. All good fun.

Still thinking about the songs I'm always in the mood to hear.

#43. Katy, my son had his sports day last week and to my surprise they had exactly what you said in your post, they raced in teams and his house team won the cup, it was refreshing to see that his school are becoming more competitive.

I remember seeing Rufus as one of the many support acts to Keane in Hyde Park a few years back and he was booed! A bit harsh, I felt. #58 - Nice to 'see' you BigNick - hopefully things will start going right again for you and fingets crossed number 6 doesn't materialise.

The primary school my son is at started having more competitive sports days 2 years ago. In the week or so leading up to sports day, the children take part in heats for a long distance run, about 1800m, a 100m sprint and a 4 x 100m relay. The finals are held on sports day after all the children have competed on behalf of their house in various games, eg how far they can throw the javelin (it's foam), penalty shoot out, a netball shoot out, skipping, how many times they can bounce a ball on a tennis racquet, etc. Their points are added up and the winning house is announced at the next assembly. The winners of the races are all awarded medals. Great to see a bit of competition back in schools. It allows children who aren't necessarily academically gifted but are more sporty to excel and have their moment of glory. Thankfully they haven't resurrected the Mums' or Dads' races.

I hated sports day at school - they were utter torture as far as I was concerned. I have never been able to run, and I was always the one who came last. It's not that I was overweight or unfit or anything, but I do have quite short legs so that might have had something to do with it. It's my excuse, anyway. I blame the parents.

But did listen to yesterday's DT at a more convenient time, as I sometimes do of a lunchtime, and delighted to hear yesterday's mensh ringing out so clearly and formally. Thank you, Simon, from the radio, Mr Mayo.

No auggestions from me to today. And where's Billie??

#59 NicRolastic - I was at that gig with Keane and remember the booing for Rufus W. Great pity. I also remember a lot of giggling when James Blunt talked - his voice was much squeakier and posher than we had imagined!

School sports day.....ah, memories. I was house captain in P7. We were the red team. That wasn't our team name, can't remember that, but I do remember red being our colour. I was quite sporty in those days and led my team to victory.

Thanks for all the messages. Having a tricky couple of days at work. but it will all be back to normal soon (fingers crossed).

Simon if possible could you please thank our volunteers who came over for a working party yesterday - 9am til midnight - stuffing envelopes and making flags! True dedication & true nutters as we are having another working party later in the week! We love them all!

    Just checking

  • Comment number 84.

Yep it work, so hopefully simon will not get confused !!!

  • Comment number 85.

#84. But what if I were to change my name, too. Perhaps Warfedale Handy...

  • Comment number 86.

Although, frankly, same county, but I'm not really 'handy'. Perhaps 'Yockenthwaite Yonder' would do, instead. Or would I have to point northwards...

    Yockenthwaite Yonder ☝ .

  • Comment number 87.

I bet someone with a blog name of Yockenthwaite would get a mensh, though.

I just wanted to say a MASSIVE thank you to everyone on here who has taken the time to read my lastest blog post, and left a comment.

It really means the world to me at this difficult time :) xxxx

I don't post links to my blog on here anymore (I always post it on FB & Twitter) because this is a happy place, it's my happy place, where I come to leave all that other stuff behind, if only for a few minutes.

Again big thanks to you all, and I will respond to the comments left tomorrow, when I am back on my laptop (posting from my iPod now - and it's fiddly!) xxxxxx

I did write something like this this morning see #89.

It was an interesting experiment yesterday. I avoided the new blog and didn't even know the theme until the show started. Heard all the menshes - all bloggers - John, WharfdaleAndy, Zoe & Mandy. Welldones to all of you.

My comments were "Busy being Fabulous" was a Fab. choice and one of Simes' favourites according to a recent article in RT. Andy - I couldn't see the link at all for "Kinky Boots" even after the explanation - a GT&T song methinks. And Zoe, I would have gone for Walker Bros. and reading the blog I see you did.

    Welldone Chickster for tonight's opener!

    The muggle's choice was another GT&T! Mussels/Muscles!

    Hi Mo!

How's it going? Have you given it a name ?

Toots - still haven't seen PSTOS! Please stay stum!

Clever song Katy! And it's lovely as well!

OOh! A Double Welldone for AlexH! Clever interpretations of the feem BOTH!

  • Comment number 96.

    Sorry Alex. Sorry.

Simes has just corrected himself and given the mensh for The Stones to Brandon.

    Welldone Brandon!

#90 Thank you Lucies mum :) There is a link to my blog on my Twitter page @mrs_moog or on Facebook if you're on either of those.

    #93 Thanks Billie :) You're right, I did choose Scott Walker's Joanna, but I got a mensh anyway! :D

Well done to Madchickenwoman for the Hot Chocolate mensh, KatyMac for The Crowded House mensh, Alex Heaney (twice, if once in error!) for Madness and Brandon B for The Rolling Stones mensh :) Fine songs all!

Have a lovely evening everyone xxx

Enjoyed the show - and wasn't even expecting a mensh!

Non sequiturs - two things to recommend for foodies - if you know of them already - shows how staid we are -

John West Seared Tuna Fillets - in different sauces - eg. Chilli - Lime & Pepper - Lemon & Corriander - come in a packet not a tin. Not cheap - about £1.80 each packet. You'll need two for two peeps. But excellent. Just 45 secs. in Microwave. Try with Salad & Home-Made Chips.

Dr. Oetker - Onken Yoghurts - come in big tubs - 450 grm -about £1 each - loads of different flavours including some with WholeGrain - excellent for Brekky. And an absolutely DisgracefullyDelicious Vanilla with Choc. Bits. A pudding. Not a Yoghurt at all!

I LOVE a post with food in it!

  • Comment number 99.

BTW - it was nice that my absence was missed.

    Thankyou.

  • Comment number 100.

So this 3 minute delay will mean I miss the #100 ?

    Bums again!
