Return to Normalcy

Simon Mayo|08:11 UK time, Thursday, 23 June 2011

That was Warren G. Harding's promise while campaigning for the US presidency in 1920. People like normal. And today we are back to normal, back in our slots and back in our boxes. All is well. The great thing about yesterday (apart from a magnificent Eggs Benedict with Jamie Cullum) was driving home and listening to Bob Harris and Mike Harding. Then playing with child 3 and listening to David Jacobs and more Bob with Ken. I enjoyed all that.

And a number one place from the public vote on the best live moment for Taylor Swift singing on Drivetime. Hooray for her, her hits and her hair.

The problem with the early starts however is food. I felt tired and hungry all day, so followed the Eggs Benedict with a pie for lunch and kebabs for tea. When you feel you 'deserve' it, those pounds will wander your way sooner or later.

Still I hope you enjoyed some of the shows yesterday. Hopefully I can play some Show of Hands, Ryan Bingham, Bellowhead et al on other, less notable occasions.

So bouncing back with Nigel, confessions, quiz of the day, Matt and Rebecca. Songs please for the start of GLASTONBURY and FESTIVALS in general. That whole festival experience in one catchy and rather brilliant tune. I'm not a huge festival goer really, I'd rather get my music in smaller doses - a middle aged thing I'm sure. There are only so many times you can complain about your back, the price of food and noisy campers before you bore yourself, never mind your fellow campers.

Have a reassuring and normal day, see you after 5.

The problem with festivals, and speaking like any parent of teenagers wanting to go, is that you're surrounded by lots of lovely people and some dodgy characters, and not always possible to tell the two apart.

People who just travel around from one festival for a living looking for any opportunity, people who are just looking for a place to spend the night as they have nowhere else to go, or people who are out to fleece you and nick all the stuff from your tent.

  • Comment number 13.

    Morning all,

Hoefully at least the weather will behave itself for the festival, my friends who go have a camper van, all mod cons (G&T under the awning) and plenty of she-wees if they actually indulge in the music side of event...

For them, I know they'd like

RAINDROPS KEEP FALLING ON MY HEAD by the Manic street preachers!

or THE RAIN SONG by the mighty ZEP

On the subject of music, I'd like to #2nd Deebees Doobies choice of 'Listen to the music'

or you could, if time allowed play John Miles's 'MUSIC'

It's been a stressful few days personally - an intensive interview (results to be known today) and my mother-in-law falling and cracking her pelvis (oww) so it's nice to be back on the blog and feel like some 'NORMALCY' has returned to my life, too.

It must have been lovely for the Mayo family collective to have Lord Ammo @ home, between 5-7pm, instead of being there simply as a voice on the radio!

    Have a nice day y'all

I loved the show yesterday. In fact, I enjoyed the whole thing with the exception of just one hour. Why can't we have more Show of Hands, Ryan Bingham, Bellowhead and the likes? Does it have be singles all day long?

I too loved the Mayo/Cullum show in the morning.

I wasn't nearly so happy with the show on the way home - the comedy one. In fact I got so fed up of it that I turned it off and put on a CD instead fro the last half an hour.

The Leveller's Beautiful Days Festival usually follows - just that little bit too closely unfortunately - Fairport's Cropredy Festival, from whence I now choose this choon, Fairport's 2nd single:

As for choons, howsabout one I have to endure most mornings:

REMEMBER YOU'RE A WOMBLE by Mike Batt/The Wombles (Big Girl's school topic is "Underground, Overground, Wombling Free" so we have to practice the songs)

Or what every festival goer hopes for:

    MR BLUE SKY by ELO

or in honour of the wellies festival goers usually needs:

THESE BOOTS WERE MADE FOR WALKING by Nancy Sinatra

or just for sheer belt it out to the crowd value:

LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU by Robbie Williams

#44 Deebee, also noticed CLP played She Drives Me Crazy by the Fine Young Cannibals the day after it was suggested on this 'ere blog.

    Good Morning All :)

I didn't actually manage to catch much of 2Day yesterday, but it was nice to hear a few of those DJs usually condemned to the late shifts, being given a rare daylight outing.

I agree with Harry, I think the regular schedule could do with a shake-up, nothing too drastic, but one or two shows *cough* 2-5pm, could do with freshening up.

    Oldie suggestions...

SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT - NIRVANA

TENDER - BLUR (was on a list of greatest Glastonbury moments & a great sing along song)

#13 Suzie - it's always good to snuggle back in here when life gets stressful.

I, too have several, Glamping Chums who 'do' festivals without lowering their culinary, comfort and hygiene standards.

#48 Hi Zoe - I have a hunch that the afternoon show incumbent will only vacate that slot when *he* thinks it's a good idea. And why not? He's a big cheese on planet R2, gets involved with the creative planning and ideas for many of the other shows, has a record of successful broadcasting second to none and is hugely respected by his peers.

I wonder what the Radio2 policy is on songs that it will play during the day? Is it just, or primarily, singles? It seems to me that Radio2 is becoming Radio1-lite. It's only a personal preference, and I am fully aware that I might be in a minoirty of one, but I'd prefer it to be 6Music-lite.

  • Comment number 61.

Good Morning Everyone and, of course, Simon the Normal Drivetime Dude, The Team and The NYM,

    I'd like to suggest:-

SAN FRANCISCO - SCOTT MCKENZIE, 'cos I just love that choon. Probs a bit tenuous as it doesn't really mention Glastonbury in the lyric but please NYM, it's a lovely choon :)

I'm home with a poorly younger boy today. I think the excitement of Sports Day on Tuesday and Intake Day yesterday has taken it's toll, although it's more likely to be some bug he's picked up.

Off to catch up before I tackle another load of washing :s

My favourite bit from R2Day, was Trevor Nelson and Tony Blackburn with the hour of soul. I suddenly realised that I could be converted to soul. Loved the Stevie Wonder track. I also enjoyed the comedy hour, it had me chuckling whilst getting tea prepared. I did miss the usual Drivetime crew tho' and will be thrilled to little mint balls when I tune in at 5.05 and hear the sweet tones of SM and his wonderful team.

Firstly, can I just say, diplomacy has never been my strong point. Of course, the 7-8am show yesterday was the best show but I enjoyed Trevor Nelson's and Tony Blackburn's contribution every bit as much.

Suzie - hope you get news and I hope your mother-in-law's soon on the mend. A lady at work fell in the snow last winter and broke her pelvis but didn't go to the doc's for about a week. It took a while to mend but she seems fine now.

I thought Tim Smith looked a lot older than 50 in that photo - I'm guessing it wasn't a very good photo.

The meeting went well last night, thank you Julia. However, my friend and I just had one question - what do all these parents have to say to their child's tutor (who they only just met yesterday for the first time)??? What could they possibly have to say? Answers in the box below, please - we're intrigued. We felt like bad parents as we couldn't think of a single thing to say. We hung around 'til we thought we were in the clear and could leave without looking uncaring ;)

#54 With all the changes that the BBC have to go through in the coming years, I wouldn't think that anyone employed by them has a job for life. I can see that SW has garnered a lot of respect from his peers etc, and he certainly has a good track record to stand on. I was a massive fan of his during the 80s and early 90s, and back then he was at the top of his game. I was even a devoted listener to his show when he moved to Radio 2, it was a change from Ed Stewart (who I also liked but who has become a bit old fashioned for that slot) and I was a regular listener for years. I just think now that the format for 'The Big Show' as become stale, but if listener figures are still good, then who am I to argue? I've got Radcliffe and Maconie to turn to if I want alternative radio listening at that time now, and I do!

Hope Alex G is alright :S Get well soon!

#71 Toots, I suppose questions for the tutor could just be general things you might be concerned about with your child's progression from junior to secondary school :/ Your young man sounds like he's as sharp as a tack, but some parents might have concerns about how their child might cope in a new environment etc

  • Comment number 81.

Alex-G is fine - I've been in touch with her by phone. Just a bit tired, and busy finishing off her current contract.

#48 Zoe... Great idea to have a bit of a shake-up.... and I agree with you (as do many others) about the 2-5pm slot... could do with a change of presenter as he's still in the 80s! By the way, why does Steve Wright call his show, 'The Big Show'?

  • Comment number 83.

#82 Is it because it seems to go for ever and ever and ever ....

or possibly to match the presenter's ego?

#80 - ZueUU, you know, I hadn't even given that a thought. Thank you for making me realise how grateful I am that I didn't have anything to say to the tutors. Having the older boy at secondary school already made me a bit blase about the whole experience, I guess :s

Poor old SW :s Mind you I wouldn't be averse to spending the afternoon with the lovely Richard Allinson :) My sis and I had a mensh when he was standing in for SW one time. She was tidying cupboards at the top of her stairs and I was on the school run. She was tickled pink, bless her. :)

    ~ xx

#80 Zoe, as for SW's listener figures holding up, I wonder how much that is due to lack of choice? Here in Cumbria, there really isn't the option to go somewhere else for your radio. I suppose it is different in London and maybe a few of the other larger conurbations, but for me, it's either Radio2 on or the radio off. I wonder how many people just leave it on and so tacitly add their support?

#81 Sorry you're having a tough day Deebee ((hugs)) Glad to hear Alex G is o.k, if a bit tired :)

#82 I thought it was called 'The Big Show' because of the length of it i.e 3 hours, his used to be the 'biggest' show on Radio 2, but he now shares that 'title' with Chris Evans.

#83 Sound theories ;) Sorry to hear your little one has chicken pox, I had that over Christmas when I was 8, not fun with the itching.

#84 No problem Toots :) Glad to be of assistance, and it's good that your young man is all set for the transition to secondary school.

#87 I suppose the 'lack of an alternative' could be a factor in SW's listening figures, also it's probably on in some work places, where not everyone present would choose to listen to it. But I would think that this only accounts for a small(ish) percentage of the overall figures. Most people must be tuning in through personal preference...

I actually have no idea how many listeners SW gets, as I only took note of Chris Evan's listener numbers and those for Drivetime from the last Rajar survey.

#85 #86 #88 Thanks guys. Occupational hazard, unfortunately - working in HR I occasionally have to do something unpopular, and on this occasion I feel really sorry for the person concerned.

However, this has cheered me up a bit https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00hqk5w

#90 Oh dear :( Did you have to 'let someone go'?

I saw that interview yesterday (Rebecca tweeted it) it is lovely, isn't Lord Ammo just so modest and gracious? :)

    Hello all!

Thanks for all the good wishes. I got into the office at lunchtime and am now head down in a pile of process maps. I really can't wait until next Thursday when this contract ends - the Programme Manager they have taken on is truly awful. A real bully and it is getting me down. BUT, I have a day off tomorrow to view 2 houses and then it is only 4 more working days here. Some new contracts in the pipeline - really interesting pieces of work so I just need to ride through the next few days.

Deebee, sorry your day isn't going so well. Your text really cheered me up this morning - thank you!

Suzie, sorry to hear of your troubles. Fingers crossed that the interview was successful.

Toots, if you had nothing to say to the tutor, then that is a good thing. You have confidence in your boy!

#91 Thanks Zoe - no, it was a bit more complicated than that. Obviously I can't discuss details. I saw Rebecca's tweet yesterday, but I've only just had a chance to have a look at the clip.

#92 Alex, you are very welcome! Hope the house viewing goes well tomorrow. You will 'know' when you find the right one. I repeat what I said to Suzie earlier - chin up!

#93 The HR world can be tough at times. Back at you - chin up!!!

On the SW theme, I don't often hear the SW very often but when I do, I find it rather predictable and formulaic. I did hear some of the comedy hour yesterday and was perplexed to hear Barry from Watford and Ask Elvis. Ghastly.

LOVED the concert at 6pm. Loads of energy, great music. Just been looking at the photos. We know a couple of the guys in Jools' band and it was nice to see them in the pics, looking like they were having a really good time. Looking forward to hearing all about it!

From a quick scan down the list, (I may have missed it) I can't believe that nobody has suggested TIGER FEET by MUDD!

    Perhaps it was too obvious!

One thing I liked about the Rebecca Pike interview with Simon and Jamie, (aside from ther interview itself) is the fact that the volume control goes all the way up to 11, ala Spinal Tap. One thing I didn't like was that there was no Rebacca on Camera. Evans didn't call her Foxy without reason. DDG!

#96 POS... Why is Rebecca called Foxy? Is it because she's a foxy lady? ;o)

#96 As I was listening through headphones it's probably just as well I didn't turn the volume up to 11! Do I take your comments to mean that Rebecca is quite pretty? Having met her, I can vouch that she is - and I hate her!*

*obviously that's not true - she is lovely really!

#90 thanks for the clip, very good it's a shame that:

    a) too much time was spent on their precious hour talking to 'other' R2 presenters, mentioning no names (fear of modding) and

    b) I missed Richard Allinson's slot on the R2 Today shenanigans, as that was at 1pm when I was tearing round to my Mother-'n-laws to meet the ambulance crew...as the wardens are no longer called out when the emergency button is pressed (she's in supposed 'sheltered' accommodation - the Council tender for it's management went to the cheapest option of course)) and the ambulance crew rang me to let them in with my keys! 35 minutes cycle ride (uphill) in a record time of 25mins..

    Stress City Arizona.

Three weeks flat on her back at NHS expense, they'll have to tie her down!

By the way, I have ordered Ryan Bingham's CD of which Lord Ammo & Sub Lieutenant Cullum played 'Weary heart' yesterday. I am aware that I could have bought it 'virtually' and downloaded it to my ipla*er but I do like the feel of something tangible for my hard-earned coppers!

I certainly can't wait until the dulcet-toned RA takes a proper daytime slot, his music and banter are brill.

#95 if we are going down that route, then anything from Ten(t)pole Tudor might be appropriate!
