....and relax

Simon Mayo|09:58 UK time, Wednesday, 22 June 2011

Well that was really quite fun. I had no idea how 2Day was going to sound but we both enjoyed ourselves enormously. The response was good too (though doubtless there were many 'we want Chris back!' texts that we weren't shown). So many people went on line and bought tunes they never thought they'd like, I think 2Day will turn into something rather expensive for many. What did you think?

And breakfast with Jamie C was rather fine too. Eggs Benedict went down rather well after the early morning start. Calories yes, but when you have a sense of entitlement, I think they don't count.

Anyway, by the time Jamie and I had worked out what we were doing, it was time to stop and go home. Normal ops resume tomorrow!

Have a surprising and inspirational 2Day (gone all corporate) and see you tomorrow.

Well done Simon (and Jamie)! What a great show!!

I think I heard more new, fantastic music in the first hour of today’s broadcast than I’d hear in any single day of normal programming.

Of course, by showing what Radio2 can do when it chooses to be different, it has made the usual scheduling look quite jaded. Perhaps it is time to break away from the tired old format that Radio2 has been using since Adam decided that y-fronts were a good idea?

  • Comment number 3.

One of the bonuses of the i player Simon. Being able to listen to it at a more civilized hour.

What an early start you must have had!

Ps, funny sort of a bounce on the blog this morning. Slightly hesitant!

Good Morning Each! I have to say, I wasn't sold on the idea of 2Day, overly, but I'm eating humble pie right now. It's all rather good thus far.

    Morning all

Had a little listen earlier, and all sounded very intriguing. Will try to find a more convenient time to absorb at my leisure.

    Good Morning

Congrats to Sergeant Major Mayo and Captain Calllum of the Coldstream Guards. A most enjoyable show this morning. Jamie was very good - but Simon showed exactly why he deserved that Sony Award. A truly great broadcaster.

#2 Harry, with the greatest of respect I am going to have to disagree with you entirely. I love the usual schedule - Chris Evans' energy gets me through the bedlam that is breakfast, Ken Bruce makes me laugh and Popmaster gets the brain working. Jeremy Vine gets the adrenalin pumping (and is a thoroughly decent bloke) and if I haven't got the pram out of the door by the time Wrighty's second oldie comes on I know I am going to in trouble for being late at the school gate.

Having said that I do know it isn't all about me, me me and what I like. It's good to see what else is on offer. However I think some things are suited to particular times of day. In the night I would find Janice Long warm and mellow but at this time of the day it just feels dull and dreary. Sorry!

Looking forward to all the other things 2Day has to offer.

    Have a good day.x

    Good Morning All

Brilliant show this morning! The music was fantastic - I think I only knew about 2 or 3 of the tracks that were played, but I'm one of those people who is going to be doing some downloading later! Shame it was only on for an hour though - really could have done with more of the same.

I think this 2Day thingy is a great idea. I really only listen to about 30 minutes of Chris in the morning, snatches of Jeremy if I happen to be out and about in the car at lunchtime, and the end of Steve on the way home. Plus as much of Drivetime as I can ;o) And at the weekends, the only programme I hear with any regularity is Johnny Walker's Sounds of the 70s. So to have a taster of what else is available on the network is quite refreshing. I'm only sorry I can't hear more of it 'live' today - thank goodness for iplayer...

    Hello All,

Missed Lord Ammo this morning. Will listen again at a more convenient time. Just finished listening to Janice Long and got say I didn't find her dull and dreary at all. Ron Sexsmith I was already familiar with as he has been on Lord Ammo's show recently but I haven't heard of The Imagined Village or Wine, Women and Song (Ithink I got that right). Will investigate further with my allotted 10 hours on Spotify.

    Maybes later

    Morning all!

Jumping blog I see obviously can't cope with the R2 schedule today and neither can I. Have to agree though that Simon and Jamie worked well but so far the rest of the schedule has been poor imho.

  • Comment number 14.

#7 Julia, I have no problems with you disagreeing with me; you always charming and respectful so how I could I complain? :-)

However, the 2Day programming so far has highlighted why I switch off Radio2 for most of the day. The whole thing is a rare treat for me. I'll enjoy it and then go back to listening at a more convenient time tomorrow.

  • Comment number 15.

Like everyone else, I also really enjoyed listening to Simon and Jamie this morning but the programme wasn't on long enough for me! I would prefer to hear the more mellow tones of Mr Mayo in the mornings, rather than Chris, who I find is too manic most of the time, but he was OK on Drivetime!

Perhaps Radio 2 could do this 'swap' thing more often allowing presenters to do full programmes! I like Janice Long and think it's a shame she's on so late, so that some people never get to hear her, and I'm sure Janice would do a good job of standing in for Steve Wright!

#11 How about TWO HEARTS by Phil Collins? Or TWO BECOME ONE by the Spice Girls?

Meant to say earlier a big thank you to Simon for writing a blog for us today, even though there is no song choosing to do and the show is already done and dusted. Really appreciate that!

Toots just texted to say she's having problems posting, but she's hoping to be here later.

Doh!!! A bit dishevelled - been trying to get in for ages. Just realised I hadn't logged in! Here it is for what it's worth:-

Morning Everyone and, of course, Simon the Early Bird Drivetime Dude, The Team and The NYM (just 'cos there's no theme doesn't mean we shouldn't include everyone),

I loved hearing Jamie's and your dulcets this morning Simon - great way to start the day :) I didn't hear it all so will listen again at a time more convenient. Was a bit put out, however, when Mr Shouty McShouty (CLP) put in an appearance - I came over all Mrs McShouty and was shouting at the radio "GET OFF, IT'S NOT YOUR TURN YET, STOP TRYING TO TAKE OVER"!!! Hmph! Blimmin' show off. Sadly, he's getting my back up more and more these days :( Used to love the guy, now I just about tolerate him. Anyhoo, Simon, suffice to say, I'll miss you at 5.05 this evening and will look forward to your show tomorrow :)

    morning,

I missed Lord Ammo this morning but had the displeasure of listening to Vanessa Feltz talk over Bill Kenwright and Jo Whiley. In the end I had to listen to a cd to save my sanity. I now know why I only listen to Lord ammo and sometimes Chris Evans because a lot of the others would put me over the edge.

I am looking forward to tomorrow when normal service is resumed.

hope you all have a good day.

    Nick.

#17 Toots.... you weren't the only one who was irritated by Chris Evans making a 'shouty' appearance in the middle of Simon's show... it kind of annoyed me as Simon had so little time and it was so good not to hear CE's shouty voice (up to then)! My friend was just saying a smiliar thing and she said that her husband said "What's he doing interfering on Simon's programme?" My friend said she could imagine CE popping up all day on everyone else's programmes as he has to be the centre of attention!!!

#17 Toots, I forgot to say on my earlier post that Chris is really starting to grate on me and I am more frequently listening to other stations or listening to cd's.

The younger boy is on his 'Intake Day' at secondary school today. I've had a text to tell me his tutor is Mr Jenkins - what a fab name for a teacher - he's a relatively new teacher to the school and quite young who teaches RE but, for some reason, I think he should teach woodwork, be fast approaching retirement, wear specs, have a bit of a baldy head, wear a threadbare sports jacket with leather elbow patches, have a pipe permanently lodged in his mouth and ash stains down his flannel trousers. We have a meeting for parents this evening - can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to that!

  • Comment number 24.

#22 Hey Nick, I know, that's why I reined in my remarks. I've occasionally been listening to CDs on the way to work (CLP) and, on the way home (SW), i've been tuning in to Radio 4 (hope I don't get modded). One day last week, I heard a play which i found to be a v enjoyable way to unwind on the way home.

  • Comment number 30.

#27 Toots and #28 Harry.. you're so right.... I turned on Radio2 a few minutes ago and Chris was going on about all the cars he bought in the 90s... just because he had the funds to do so and I switched it off after two minutes of his car chat... but then he did say the other day that he knows very little about music and doesn't buy any music CDs or downloads either, so he's talking about what he knows more about! ;~)

  • Comment number 31.

#28 - Harry, oh dear - it really doesn't make for good listening, does it?

    #29 - Thank you JbG - v interesting.

I think 2Day is a fab idea but I think care should be taken not to alienate listeners - although it's great to hear different music and not always be listening to the same old same old, it is nice to hear something familiar. I didn't hear all of Simon and Jamie's show this morning so I'm sure there were familiar tunes in there; the bits I heard I didn't recognise the tunes so it wasn't the best start to the day. It was, however, strangely reassuring to hear Simon's and Jamie's chat - perhaps not as off the cuff as usual but I'm guessing they had a target to aim for and in such a limited time they couldn't afford to be sidetracked. I loved CLP's upbeat presenting in the very early days of his breakfast show, it was a breath of fresh air.

    Good afternoon all!

How lovely to have a new blog today - bless you Simon.

I missed the 7 - 8 slot, and the 9 - 10 as well. Wasn't feeling particularly chipper so decided to start the day very slowly. I did hear Janice Long and enjoyed the music she played. I also caught some of Johnnie Walker and was perplexed - I thought he was meant to be partnering Brian Matthews but it was Joe Brown. Hope all is well with Mr Matthews.

Anyhow, I enjoyed what I heard and will definitely be listening at a time different to the time originally broadcast. Nice to hear presenters I don't normally catch showcase their talent and music choices.

#12 JPA, I probably wouldn't find it dull and dreary in the evening. Perhaps I should listen again at a more convenient time.

#14 Harry, you are very kind. However yet again we disagree because 12 to 1 was fab. A real trip down memory lane. I had forgotten all about teabag tops.

I've just spent a very worthwhile couple of hours negotiating a shiny new all-singing all-dancing phone. Actually I didn't really need to negotiate.

I've had a SIM only contract with my provider for ages and ages - just to make phone calls and send texts, you understand. They contacted me and told me I was a loyal and deserving customer and for a couple of quid a month more, would I like a fancy phone? Well, she didn't use the word 'fancy' but that's what she meant.

    It's already in the post.

Another busy day here but had to poop on to say how much I enjoyed Noisy & Jamie's show this morning (apart from the very rude interruptions). Had to poop home at lunchtime so heard the second half of Chris & Zoe (interesting reminiscences of 90s) and a bit of Richard A. Fell in love with the Secret Sisters, the first song he played.

  • Comment number 57.

I have never seen Tim, sidekick of Steve Wright, and on the home page I was scrolling through the pictures of the people who have already been on today and on the pic of SW and the PM is a picture of 'Tim'... is that the same Tim who is on SW's show? If so, I thought he was a much younger man... but then perhaps the pic is of a different Tim... and if so, apologies for thinking he looks a much older man in the picture, than he sounds on the radio!!!

  • Comment number 58.

Trying not to sound catty. Admire her enormously. Also, I sort of know her sister.

  • Comment number 59.

#57 Isn't it odd the way we create a mental image of a person just from the sound of their voice? Before I saw a photo of Sally Traffic, I had this picture in my head of tall, dark haired woman. She's no less gorgeous for being a little shorter and blonde but not at all how I imagined.

  • Comment number 60.

#56 Unfortunately, that would not work in our household! We still have the manuals for old cookers / fridges etc "just in case". I suppose just in case the old fridge finds its way home from the tip and re-establishes itself in the corner of the kitchen. He (Mr P) can be a strange man at times but I love him dearly.

#55 Ooh Katy, a white phone! How exciting! You will be so busy playing with it that you will forget to blog, and then we will all miss you hugely, leading to depression and a completely inability to choose songs for the day's theme, leading to both consternation and a lack of music on Drivetime, creating chaos within Radio 2, the abdication of Peta Womble and ultimately the collapse of the Empire.

  • Comment number 71.

#68 In my experience, instruction manuals are more confusing than sitting down and working out how to do it myself. I don't know if that is because I'm a man. I would never consider myself to be a 'bloke'. But, hey, what would I know?

  • Comment number 72.

Katy and Harry... sometimes when we see a person we have listened to for a long time, yet have no idea what they look like, we often think they look nothing like their voice and others look exactly how they sound!

I have just been listening to David Jacobs... and to me, he has always looked exactly how he sounds on the radio! Steve Wright looks like his voice and so does Lord Ammo... but I also imagined Sally to be a well dressed brunette, tall and leggy, but I saw her once at a motor show and she looked quite the opposite of how I had pictures her... not that she would have been dressed up for a motor show, but she looked like she had long blonde hair extensions that were quite windswept! She's good fun though and perfect with Simon, Matt and Rebecca as they all have a warm, friendly rapport and that is still evident when 'part-time Pauline' is there in place of Rebecca!

I have seen Ken Bruce too... back in the early 80s when he had hair and a beard and he looked more like Ken then, than he does now! He has a nice personality and a good voice for radio.

Are there any celebs/DJs etc who you blogpoppets think look either exactly the same, or completely the opposite of how you imagined them to be when you saw them for the first time?

You know lots. Which is why it's interesting to get your viewpoint.

#70. Now I am a 50/50 kind of bloke depending on what the manual is for. If it is anything technical/electrical I dump the manual in a drawer for future use, if it is for flatpack furniture I follow the instructions to the diagram (if I can work them out) as have been caught out trying to be a know it all and doing my own thing with legs shorter than the others and drawers or doors not opening properly.

I quite like the catty corner, perhaps I should change and be constantly catty about everything.

    Miaow.

#70 Not that this will prove Sandi Toksvig right or wrong, but I heard her make the comment on an episode of QI. All the male panellists, most of the audience in the studio, together with me and Mrs Snapper, all chuckled in recognition of the (general) truth of the statement.

#72. Luciesmum, I often wondered how the darklord Alex Lester looked and he wasnt what I thought he would be like. also, Richard Allinson.

Must go and give my dogs a good walk as I'm going to see Don McLean tonight and they'll be on their own... with the radio on to keep them company, but I've no idea who will be on tonight!

I'm looking forward to seeing what Don McLean looks like now as I've not seen pictures of him and not seen him on TV for a long time! Wonder if he'll look like I imagine him.. all these years on! Just hope he sings American Pie! ;o)

    Back later! x

Still here, just until my three minute warning is up! #76 BigNick40, I have no idea what The Dark Lord looks like so will have to check him out later!

  • Comment number 79.

Ah Nick (welcome to the corner, by the way), maybe I should follow your practice. I chuck ALL manuals. Hence the flatpack desk I put together has an upside down drawer. I keep it as a storage area in the also upside down cupboard on the side. It sits snugly on the shelf (which is woodchip side up, veneer down). I quite like my wonky desk.

Katy, I think we are all missing B&B..... :(

#72 Luciesmum, I was fortunate to be at Children in Need last year and was really surprised that Jezza Vine is taller and thinner than he appears! Chris Evans was also really tall. Johnny Saunders was better looking than I expected, as was Richard Allison.

Rightio gang, I am heading off early as still not feeling 100%. As usual, thank you for your company, banter and bon mots. Wishing you all a pleasant evening and see you on the morrow.

    Dear MayoBlog/Wittertainment

How very irritating to have freebies to cinema tonight and the one film I really wanted to see is on every OTHER NIGHT but tonight.

I now have the choice of:

BAD TEACHER (Contains strong sex references and language, drug use and moderate nudity)

BRIDESMAIDS (Contains very strong language, strong sex references and crude humour)

GREEN LANTERN (Contains moderate fantasy violence)

KUNG FU PANDA (Contains mild martial arts action)

MARS NEEDS MOMS (Contains mild sci-fi violence and threat)

PIRATES OF THE CARIB 4 :STRANGER TIDES (Contains mild sci-fi violence and threat)

THE HANGOVER PART II (Contains very strong language, strong sex references, nudity and drug use)

TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (Contains moderate action violence and one use of strong language)

X MEN: FIRST CLASS (Contains moderate fantasy violence and one use of strong language) Yeahyeahyeah - saw that.

    I wanted to see:

SENNA (contains infrequent strong language and footage of motor racing crashes) No kidding,eh?

    ;^)

    Yours grumpily,

DaylightKaty (contains a rather fine Gordon Lightfoot song and a miaow)

I think I may have Toots' occasional problem of not being able to post long posts. Let's see if this mini one works...

If it's any help Katy, Jo Wiley said earlier that she thought BRIDESMAIDS was going to be a bit lightweight, and had planned to avoid it, but had since heard good reviews of it, and had changed her mind. So, that is a sort of Jo Wiley recommendation. Make of it what you will.

Manuals are for wimps, people that dont want to risk their warranties. Binning them is one of the few excitements left to me.

#79 AlexGirl... I hadn't imagined Tim Vine to be tall nor Christ Evans but I thought Johnny would be quite a tall guy. What about Lord Ammo... I picture him to be about 6 feet tall?

  • Comment number 84.

#83 I think Lord Ammo is around 6 ft tall - he mentioned his height once, but I can't remember what he said. He seems tall, because he's quite slim. Jamie Cullum is very short - did you see the picture of the two of them on Twitter this morning? Chris Evans is taller in real life than I thought he would be (as Alex said), and Johnny Saunders is VERY tall!

Alex - hope you feel better soon.

KatyMatey - I feel your pain. I want to see Senna too - was hoping it would be on at our local World of Cine this weekend.

Off home in a mo. And no Drivetime to look forward to - what on earth am I going to do with my early evening...?

Good evening! Manuals? Pft. More trouble than they're worth IMO. I just get stuck in then find someone to fix or finish the job ;-)

Can anyone recommend anything by Secret Sisters? Heard them on Richard A and loved them. He mentioned that the song he played had never been recorded by them. Will definitely be listening again to some of the shows. What I heard of Tony B and Trevor N made for good listening. Forgot about the 6pm concert :-(

And thank you Simon fir taking time to give us a new blog today. I hope we have done it justice.

Losing track of where this post is going so will post now.

    Hi All

CSN - you can always ask Annie to come over here and see her message! She'd be very welcome.

I caught a bit of the Comedy hour earlier on my way home. I love Henning Wehn - I first came across him on one of the 'Act Your Age' recordings that I went to. Very funny guy!

Been spending my Drivetimeless early evening copying some stuff from HDD onto DVD. With the aid of the manual, naturally... It's still taking a lot longer than it ought too. Well on the way to finishing now though, and somebody will be receiving a little present through the post soon. With the correct postage on this time...

    ;o)

How lovely that we are nearly at 100 posts. And on a non mensh chasing day, too!

#95 Mo, I have The Secret Sisters' self named album and I think that's the only one that's out. Has their most famous song on it (Tennessee Me) on it. It's quite good.
