G'day Y'all

Simon Mayo|08:10 UK time, Friday, 17 June 2011

Morning all. Friday at last and a very good Friday it will be too-if the Lord is willing and the creek don't rise, as they say in some parts. Though not especially these parts. It must be all the James Lee Burke I read. He's still my favourite author guest. Anyone who can come up with this as an impromptu answer to a listener deserves our gratitude.

"Never give up. I believe that talent comes from a hand outside us and that it is given to us for a reason. Never let the naysayers get you down. Write one day at a time and write for one reason only, to make the world in some fashion a better place. Eventually, every artist learns the following lesson: take pride in rejection and excoriation. The boos always come from the cheap seats. You stay on that old-time rock and roll and grin and walk the cannon smoke and let go of the world. It will drive your critics insane."

I know I've quoted it before, but these things are worth repeating. Especially as we all forget things just a little bit more these days...

Loved the American accents yesterday. If I practice enough, I'll be able to quote James Lee Burke and sound convincing. My favourite movie accent was Val Kilmer's in Tombstone. He plays Doc Holliday and speaks in a dead dialect; a southern USA aristocratic accent. It's well wort a listen, especially as it doesn't exist anymore and they only found it on an old 78 disc. Worth a listen.

Just the one show today as Dr Kermode has taken the week off somewhere which means I can be fresh and sparkly for the All Request Friday. Well, comparatively so anyway. Choose a tub-thumpng, bone-rattling, upset-the-neighbour style tune and we'll select the toppest tune we find.

Have an easy-going and incident-free Friday, seee you after 5.

    Mornin' Y'all :D

I have been diggin' the American deep south accent recently too, after OD-ing on True Blood the last few weeks (in preperation for season 4 starting!)

So, please Simon and Co, don't be tighter than a gnat over a water barrel, and play my jumpin' choon...

    BURNING LOVE - ELVIS PRESLEY

You'll make this old critter happy if ya play it, though I'll be as nervous as a cat in a room full of rockin' chairs come 5pm!!

Later Y'all, and stay outta trouble now y'hear xx

The creek is gonna rise here. Just checked the Met Office website and there's an evil-looking blob of blue, yellow and green over the Irish sea that has just reached me here on the west coast of Wales.

Tub-thumping tune: Setting Sun - Chemical Brothers

Hiya Simon and all the blogsters.

Indeed, so glad its Friday....2nd week in a new contract and things are going ok, still not regretting turning down the permanent offer....but if it had the potential to interfere with my kickboxing then I had to do the gazumping!!

Many thanks for the mention yesterday Simon, I was well chuffed as I heard it tootling at a snails pace on Spaghetti Junction!! Mensh drought over...phew what a relief. Oh and congrats to all you others too who had mentions!

Now for the toonage for the ARF:

How about a weekend blasting toon that I had forgotten about quite frankly....

LETS GET ROCKED - Def Leppard

Reminds me of wonderful times catching Bryan Adams on every leg of his 1992 waking up the neighbours tour.....especially Ipswich...:) ;) ;)

Have a top weekend you lovely people...I'm competiing on Sunday....black and gold Kwon gloves for the 1st placers!!!! fingers crossed!!!

    Byzee bye.

    Mandy :)

Morning Lord Ammo, team, NYM, and drawling bloggers,

G'day? Do we have an Antipodean cousin talking to our American friends? Howdy, surely?

I've totally enjoyed the US accents in the last few days, but as I said on yesterday's blog, I have a penchant for a friendlier softer Canadian accent, eh?

    My bone-rattler for today's ARFO:

    SHE"S NOT THERE - Santana

Starts gently, in a wheel-tapping way, and then reaches what can only be called a crescendo.

    Good day all!

  • Comment number 5.

What an excellent day to be here!

I did it. Went to the dark side of the moon and back and appear to have retained some marbles.

You are all quite superb. Simply awesome. The words 'thank you' seem woefully inadequate.

To say that this blog is inspirational would be an understatement.

Lots to natter about, but for now ...

My dinner party would consist of Guests of Honour:

    Simon, Rebecca, Matt & Sally

plus: Every Single Blogpoppet + guest – doesn't have to be partner, could be anyone. Think we can safely assume Nelson, Miranda and Vicky C will be joining the fun ... so I shall invite James McAvoy.

    Morning all

Katy - welcome back! It's lovely to see you blogging again, and to know that you're OK!

This is my last day at work for 2 weeks, so I may not have much time to play.

    My ARFO this week is

    LOVE SHACK - B52s

    Back later

  • Comment number 13.

Welcome back to Katy!!! - and I hope Mo is not suffering with post-birthday headache?!

Happy Friday to all you 'lil blogpoppets - let's not let the forecast of squillions of millimeters of rain dampen our spirits...we are after all British (Land of Hope and Glory' starts swelling in the background...) and are used to sheltering in garages at BBQ's, suffering soggy hat syndrome at Ascot and in the words of Monty Python 'Always look on the bright side of life' IE:

    No garden watering YAY

The six-day drought is over YAY

    Umbrella sales are up YAY

and we can still wear our lovely winter boots (perhaps one for the ladies only, that)

In response to the U S of A Blog type theme, I would like to recommend the excellent tune by one of their own:

    AMERICAN GIRL by Tom Petty

Every single track on that album is a gem..but this has the best guitar (said guuiitaaar) riff of them all...

    Have an excellent day y'all.

    Morning Simon and the Blogpoppets!

ARFO: THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES ON TV - A-ha (seems appropriate given the weather forecast!)

A day of chores awaits me today, so will probably be back sooner rather than later!

    Rx

  • Comment number 18.

    Morning everyone!

For an ARF change please Simon, I would love to hear...

SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN ~ The Ramones

Great to see Katy back with her pretty post! Have a fun-filled Friday everyone!

    xx

  • Comment number 19.

    Ay up me ducks,

Hope everyone's in fine Friday fettle. Couldn't come out to play yesterday as was down in the big smoke doing boring grown up stuff - boo! Anyway, as a consequence now have a poorly throat (sound like Marge Simpson on 50 a day) so today will be mostly drinking tea and listening to R2 - hurray!

Simon, re the tune snaffling I'm sure I speak for all when I say we don't mind sharing! So please no slapped wristies for JV, SW et al - I'm just relieved it's not my imagination and am not going c-c-crazier than I already am. Like the idea of sending Dr Mosh round though - have a mental image of him bursting into SW's studio making the rock horns hand sign swinging his swede in a Beavis and Butthead styley to The Style Council - nice!

So, ARFO then - I believe the track you are looking for that fits that there criteria is:

Fight For Your Right (to party) - The Beastie Boys

    Take it easy folks,

    N x

  • Comment number 20.

PS: I forgot to say the sun is shining north of the Border!

Let's hope it stays here all weekend!

  • Comment number 21.

Well that's the ARFO suggested, (AMERICAN GIRL, Tom Petty in case the Dude or Researcher needs reminding!) so finally, after reading all your DP guest lists, and spending many a wee quiet hour considering, here are my chosen dinner party guests:

    Laurie Lee

    Lord (Drivetime Dude) Ammo

    Simon Schama

    Danny Baker

    Ozzy Osbourne

    Me & Mr e

    Mo Mowlam

    Tracy Emin

    Jo Brand

    Emmeline Pankhurst

Not in any particular order, obviously it would be girl/boy/girl - and I would hope that once the wine starts flowing (Mr e is cringing at the thought of Ozzy decending thirstily on his wine rack) there could be some great conversations...Will Self in the end did not make the list (sorry Will, you're just too much of a 'me' 'me' 'me' guest).

Better get on, only a 1/2 day on Fridays - enjoy yourselves, it usually is later than you think.

  • Comment number 22.

    Good Morning All

Lovely to have you back KatyMatey me ole chum!! Hope you've had time to read back and feel the blogloveliness. Can't wait for your dinner party - it sounds fun!

My ARFO suggestion for today is:

NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS by Tina Turner

I'd also like to second Tortie's B52's choice - although actually ANY of the songs suggested so far would be great.

Feeling a bit grumpy today, so I may just lurk. Although it's hard to stay down in the dumps for long around here!

No ARFO from me this week - still basking in last weeks glory. I will be mainly spending today polishing the crown in readiness for handing it over to the successful blogpoppet. You will be pleased to hear it had no accidents this week, other than a cobweb or two from the loft clearance.

    # 24 we need to do a Doodle diary to make sure Jo can attend both DP's...I had to have a lady comedian, and she has improved over the years - LOVE the 'Getting on' prog, it's SUPERB. She's also a lady who is not afraid to appear 'warts and all' (see Getting on) sans make-up on TV. Takes some bal*s which I suspect she has secreted somewhere.

#28 I had an idea that maybe, in honour of the collective power of the DT bloggers (supplying music to all of R2 progs?) we could all, around MTF's birthday, second her ELO choice - just as a test of our power!!

From the previous blog re@ Tw!tter. Zoe, thank you, you've been most informative. I had a moment of panic when I looked down the list of people I'm following and thought that Shaq might have seen my tweets and be wondering what the heck it was all about, then realised he's not following me so all's well. I hope you don't mind m' Lovely but I think I will block the retweets only because I don't have time to read them all.

Big Nick, I thought I had accepted your request to follow me (really don't hold your breath for anything profound) but see I have another one request from you. I'm just off to sort it all out. I couldn't work out who lcfcfan would be.

Nervous Wreck by the Radio Stars- Yep it's becoming a mission.

School's out - Malice Cooper (Dedicated to Blogger Dougal)

Or....She's so Modern The Boomtoomtown Rats (The Opening Yelp is worth the price of admission on it's own)

#66 My own game ............ been giving this a lot of thought and so far I have only decided that I'd open with Slade with Bruce top of the bill.

#68 - Harry, I've never heard that they're the poor man's Moody Blues. I've never seen them live and only have one of their albums (recorded live) Berlin: A Concert for the People which had a lot of airplay chez moi in the early to mid 80s. Must check it out on CD (not into downloads - too technical for me).

#70 Speaking of Tubthumping: when it was played last week as one of the oldie theme tunes, was I hearing things or did they play the original version and not the radio edit? I'm sure Louise was singing about "p***ing the night away" :-)

#66 Great game Harry :) I've been giving Fail Book a rest, so I didn't your post on there.

I could think about this for hours, but on instinct, for the ones I would really love to see...

    1. David Bowie (late 70s/early 80s vintage)

    2. Queen with Freddie Mercury (Live Aid vintage)

    3. Buddy Holly

    4. The Carpenters

    5. Elvis Presley ('69 Comeback Special vintage)

    6. The Rolling Stones (70s vintage)

    7. Thin Lizzy

Harry, my list is just off the top of my head. Just realised, I've left out Paul Simon with or without Mr Garfunkel. I did say the list may be tweaked (or tweeked as I typed before). Or that could be my list for the first year and with it being such a resounding success, I'd be allowed to do the inviting the next year too?

#72 Yes, Toots, they were. It always struck me as being a little unfair. Not sure where it came from, probably NME (they always were a little snotty), but BJH wrote a song with that as the title as some sort of riposte to the accusation.

I'd like to suggest YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH - Meat loaf for the ARF Opener.

#69 You're welcome :) I don't mind you blocking my RTs, I only RT stuff I find interesting/funny/might be of use to others, but I do RT a lot!

#74 Simon did play tge version with the naughty words, because he made a comment afterwards about how he thought everyone would have been singing along to it, but maybe not ALL the words! LOL

#64 "Elsewhere" viewing. Sky Atlantic seem to have partially got the message (apologies for the split-infintive!). Game of Thrones has been shown the day after the States, although Treme Season 2 is showing in the States now and Sky Atlantic sadly haven't followed straight on from Series 1 as they could have done.

24 on Sky 1 was within a week of the States for the latter series which is acceptable. Nobody seems to have got the message re Dexer yet :-(.

#81 - aw cheers - in that case, I'll have PS and his mate, AG and if there's enough time and he's willing, poss Rob Plant and Alison Krauss?

#82 I refuse to give the Murdoch empire a penny anyway, so I don't have Sky.

My principles were, shall we say, a bit more flexible during my Buffy/Angel/ER obsession days. But back then other 'options' weren't as available as they are now.

Sky are holding folk to random by snapping up all the popular shows anyway. Although, of course, you don't have to subscibe, and I don't!

    Good ARfternoon Each!

First things first. Katy, it is a REAL pleasure to welcome you back to the blog, and wish you a speedy and full recovery. I must add that none of us on here really know how difficult, or otherwise, these last few months have been for you, but I suspect that it has really been the most fearsome time, and I, for one, am in awe of you, and the stoic attitude you have dislayed on this forum. I think it would be fair to say that without you, all of our 'bloglives' would have been poorer. I wonder if I dare hope that one day, 'KatyMac' might once again be 'Baby Driver'. Anyway, loads of love to you, chuck, it's a pleasure to 'know' you, even if you are my Scrabble nemesis.

Lighten up, POS, and get on with yer ARF

Ok, then! Simon, would you please give some consideration to playing...

    'Roxette' by Dr Feelgood.

And having considered, and then rejected the idea, would you kindly open the show with...

    'Rise' by Public Image Ltd.

There, that's one I cant recall being requested before.

#85 Deevs, I saw The Cure at Glastonbury in 1986. They were fantastic - just as they come on a massive thunder storm started about a mile away behind the stage with fork lightning and the lot at which Robert Smith commented "...tonight with special affects by god..." - outstanding!!

#87 If we are having a Spruce/Queen sweepstake can I have:

    Queen 2 Bruce 5

#89 Nadine, please feel free to play all day, that's the idea :-)

(Apologies if this post appears twice ..... sent it once and it disappeared somewhere)

  • Comment number 95.

Wowser Nadine! I bet that was something else ....!

I saw them a few years ago at Wembley Arena in London. They were on stage for over 3 hours, and anyone who thinks The Cure are a bunch of navel-gazing Goth mizzogs needs to think again - they had the place jumping!!

I saw Foo Fighters at V in 2007. They played a low key accounstic set on the Ch4 stage at 12.30 in the afternoon under an assumed name (606). There could only have been about 500 of us gathered at the stage at that time of day and it was wonderful! Then they headlined the main stage on the same night and blew Chelmsford out of Essex. They were fab!

    Afternoon All,

I can't remember the last time I posted on here!

Anyway, I don't think I can think of 8 acts but I would definitely have The Smiths, Slade, The Jam and James (original line up with Gavan Whelan) and I would have them on for twice as long beacuse, quite frankly, anybody else would bore the pants off me. I'm in a truculent mood, so don't even think of disagreeing with me

    #53 Aww - thanks, Toots!

#65 Making way for you on the grumpy sofa, Alex. And I'll get Mr B to tidy up the shed at the weekend, just in case...

#63 I didn't know that about it being the happiest day of the year. Can't say I've noticed so far. I guess there's still time though - and we are being treated to dinner at a rather nice restaurant this evening by my Mum, so that should put a better complexion on the day.

My Glasto 2071 choices would be:

    Level 42 (of course!)

    Queen (with Freddie)

    Billy Joel

    Elvis Presley

    ELO

    Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood

    Madonna

    Elton John

But ask me again tomorrow, and it could easily be 8 other acts...

    #85 No Bazza, Deevs?

    U2-Vertigo.

    Pick your potato!

The best gigs are the small gigs - Stray Cats at Keele, Cherry Ghost at Carling Academy Bar and Tim Booth at The Glee Club. Much more involved and intimate, not like all this big venue, rubbish view, idiotic people laden gigs, where you get ripped off for everything.

    Truculence personified ;-P
