10 for a pound

Simon Mayo|09:17 UK time, Thursday, 16 June 2011

Good morning bloggers old and new. Dark wet and torrential here. However, as I might have mentioned before, I love wild and stormy weather. It always makes me want to run along the beach with gay abandon, skipping and jumping over the dunes. The problem is that North London isn't well served in that department so a walk to the car will have to suffice.

Well first of all the blog-in its collective wholeness-wishes blogger Katie a speedy recovery from her surgery and awaits her return. And secondly the conversation yesterday about other shows nicking your songs is ENTIRELY LIKELY. This is because they are jealous of the creative engine that is the Drivetime blog. So there. We'll have to block access from some accounts if this continues to be a problem. EXTRA VIGILANCE WILL BE NEEDED.

Seems most of you enjoyed hearing from Mr Maconie, he really does write in a most engaging way. And the old sociology lecturer in him has a social history of Britain up and running. As I mentioned to Stuart, if you are writing about the key moments of the last century, I'm sure the arrival of Sky and 24 hour news will come to be seen as one of the pivotal moments. Rolling news dominates the way politics is run and Sky money has transformed the Premier League and the dominance of football. But maybe I should keep that and write it myself. If I wasn't already lost in the belly of the beast anyway, I'd give it a go (I have to have my novel's second draft in by tomorrow and it's making me ONLY SLIGHTLY CRAZY).

Today is Nigel day and he has decided it is time for Peppered Duck with Elderflower Pancakes. To me that just sounds as though he's thrown a bunch of ingredients names into a hat and pulled them out at random. It could just as easily have been Stewed Sausage with Tossed Offal or Marinaded Oyster in Moist Cabbage. You play next! This could run ! I'm sure he knows what he's doing however and we will see after 6.

And oldies today for THE LADIES (yes we have been here before but they're great tunes!) because it is that ultra-modern LADIES DAY at Royal Ascot. This is where a bunch of bedraggled women compete to put more fruit and veg on their head than would appear sensible. The point is to get photographed for the papers and to give the rest of us a laugh. So LADIES please on the tunes and if any turn up on JV's or SW's show, I'll send Dr Mosh round.

Have a fruity and frisky Thursday, see you after 5.

DEATH OF A LADIES MAN by LEONARD COHEN

  • Comment number 26.

Morning all - thought it was a bit quiet on the Blog of Yesterday........you're all here, beating me to it!

Happy Birthday to Mo - hope the sun shines on your day, at least metaphorically.

Only one thing popped into my head on this tune suggestion:

'WHERE DID YOU GET THAT HAT?' by Stanley Holloway

Kind of unlikely airplay, that one, but the sort of choon that my Gran would have come out with when I wore my beret (thinking I looked cool) when I came home from college. She knew how to put a person down...

On the subject of 'inappropriate music' moments that Zoe UU touched on yesterday ('All along the Watchtower' at a funeral "There must be some kinda way outta here" hee hee) mine has to be when Mr e was voluteered by me to drive my friend's daughter and bridesmaids to church for her wedding (the friends daughter, not my friend, obviously, do keep up!) and he could only find a CD of 'Love tunes' in the house that might have, he thought, been appropriate to play on the journey....

As he opened the door of the car to let them in - out blasted "Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away - now it looks as though they're here to stay"

Luckily it was only me that noticed, the poor lamb (to the slaughter? Ed) still had stars in her eyes!

Will put my thinking 'cap' or 'hat' on for this tune choosing.

My one visit to ladies day at Ascot was enlivened by our coach been mooned (yes, mooned) by the WI coach passing us on the way home..seems the pimms was stronger than they thought.

  • Comment number 28.

Happy Birthday to lovely Moxxx. Can't believe what your mother did - tea on screen moment!

Just been having a catch up on yesterday's blog:

#120 Nadine, Absolutely! Have definitely noticed it. Simon, it isn't a problem though - I don't know about others but I tend to choose "choons" I like or have a sentimental attachment to so hearing them anytime is great.

Loved the dinner party guest thing. Will have a think on that one. As for the chef - it would have to be Nine Digits Nige.

Having "a bit of a do" next weekend so haven't be able to blog much as lots to sort out. Will pop in as and when I can.

  • Comment number 29.

I was going to suggest LOVELY LADIES from Les Misérables but I thought it might be a little too risqué for the Drivetime audience; we all know what a delicate bunch they are (present company excepted, of course) ;-)

    P.S. There's another fine G**gle Doodle today.

#26 Suzie, Mooned, yes mooned by the WI??????? Tea not only on the screen but also all over the kitchen work surface. Off to pilates shortly and hoping to get that image out of my head or I might collapse in fits of gigs at a truly inappropriate moment.

Has anyone suggested LADY IN RED by Chris de Burgh. I know, I know - deserves a HOIB - but does bring back happy memories of being a bridesmaid and an innocent kiss with one of the ushers.

  • Comment number 35.

In response to "This is where a bunch of bedraggled women compete to put more fruit and veg on their head than would appear sensible."

    FRUIT TREE by Nick Drake

or 'HATS OFF TO (ROY) HARPER' by the Mighty Led Zep...

not quite lady-like, but then some of the 'ladies' at Royal Ascot do get a wee bit the worse for wear, shall we say...

  • Comment number 36.

    Here's my GT&T suggestion -

I'M A BOY (but my ma won't admit it) - The Who

  • Comment number 37.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MO. I know why your Mum forgot - you've not been frantically hopping about in front of her waving the Argos (other catalogue, oooh perhaps not, other retail outlets...) catalogue and shouting "I KNOW WHAT I WANT FOR MY BIRTHDAY MUM. IT'S ONLY SIX WEEKS, SIX DAYS AWAY" and every day after that in a countdown styleeee. Have a wonderful day m' Lovely.

Just wanted to say it's great to see MCW and Alsion pooping by when time permits. Hope you're soon into the swing MCW and can contribute more frequently. Alsion, it'd be fab if you could contribute more frequently but wouldn't want anything to interfere with the plate spinning - smashing crockery can be a bit noisy.

    SM you're a swell guy :)

Ascot Gavotte - From My Fair Lady

    American Honey - Lady Antebellum

My Lady Loves to Dance - Dean Martin

    Lady Gaga - Alejandro

Now you may not have noticed it's my birthday, Lord Ammo, and a birthday mensh would be the perfect present - other than Debbie's gift, of course, but we don't need to tell everyone about that ;-)

Of course, best wishes to Katy and thank you Simon for noting it in your blog. You are a very nice man!

#29 my favourite musical, Harry! And yes, the G**gle doodle is very apt and very clever.

'THE LADY CAME FROM BALTIMORE' by Tim Hardin

Surely this will get the thumbs up from Mike Hardin??

Or THE LADY by sandy Denny - another one that Mike will be in agreement with!

    Folkie show-stopper?!

ps yes, I did say that the WI MOONED us on the way home from Ascot - we had slightly encouraged them - well, not me, more my young tiddly work colleagues, by baring their 34DD's...the coach drivers (male, natch) kept overtaking each other to wind it all up!

    Shocking behaviour.

  • Comment number 43.

Last request from me, as I don't want to hog the playground. I'd like to suggest a little-known and little-played song which just makes me happy, altho not strictly relevant to the suggested feem:

TIT FOR TAT (AIN'T NO TAKING BACK) - James Brown.

Because with all this rain, I doubt the good ladies of Ascot will be able to keep the label tucked discreetly inside and return their multi-plumed "titfers" to Harrods, Harvey Nicks, etc [other dept stores also available blah blah blah]

  • Comment number 44.

#26 Suzie - Mooning WI Ladies at Ascot??? Perhaps they were celebrating their winnings...

IF I HAD A MILLION DOLLARS - Barenaked Ladies

  • Comment number 45.

    # 42 woopsie NOT a Wednesday today, (Mike Hardin) but a Thursday (Sir Bob) but I am sure he'll endorse Tim Hardin & Sandy Denny...CONGRATS to Sir Bob - don't forget he is now entitled to the Lions Share of the grub on Thursdays in honour of his elevated status!

  • Comment number 46.

    # 44 yes, that must have been it...'Tit for tat' perfect choice...see # 42!!

  • Comment number 47.

@Suzie, did you google Jan Morris? In my opinion, one of the greatest writers of the 20th Century with a fascinating life story. If you can find a copy, I can recommend 'Conundrum'; the remarkable account of his/her change from James to Jan. One day we might get her partner's (wife?) side of the story.

  • Comment number 48.

  • Comment number 52.

    Morning all,

it's got to be "the lady is a tramp" by Frank Sinatra

  • Comment number 53.

Re other R2 shows pinching our song ideas - I take it as a compliment! And if anything, we are improving the quality of music across the network ;o)

#26 Suzie - really??!!! The WI is clearly not like it was in my Granny's day...

I missed the interview with Stuart Maconie yesterday - will have to listen at a time more convenient. A friend of mine was having a clearout of some books recently, including his 'Pies and Prejudice'. Mr B is now reading it, and enjoying it immensely.

    A couple more suggestions:

MUSIC TO WATCH GIRLS GO BY by Andy Williams

YOU'RE A LADY by Peter Skellern

Good morning Simon, Team, NYM and fellow blogpoppets!

Lovely blog this morning Simon - how nice of you to send good wishes to Katy.

Katy, I hope you are continuing to make a good recovery and will be back with us soon. SO pleased our ARFO got played on Friday!

MO!!!!! Happy birthday lovely lady!! Don't worry, my Mum forgets mine as well. I think she does it on purpose so it doesn't remind her that she is getting older!

    LOL at Suzie's mooning WI'ers!

Like the idea that we are setting the music standard across R2. Quite right too - we know and demand quality. On that note:

THREE TIMES A LADY - Commodores

    Laters

Any track by the singer called Horse

    Goodnight Ladies by Lou Reed

The Girls Song - 5th Dimension (Jim Webb parodying Burt Bacharach)

Lady Willpower - Gary Puckett & The Union Gap (aaagh! but 2 rhyming-slangs in 1 group name)

South City Midnight Lady by Doobie Brothers

Dr Mosh stubbornly refuses to play my suggested Doobies rocker, Without You - it's not the Nilsson/Mariah Carey tune!

  • Comment number 58.

Bet there'll be a picture of one of these in the papers tomorrow

    PINEAPPLE HEAD - Crowded House

  • Comment number 59.

Is it just me or does the blog keep breaking down?

#54 PoS - I bet you thought you could sneak that Tull suggestion in without me spotting it!

  • Comment number 60.

#58 (me!) (is that allowed, or does it go against the laws of nature and bloggery?)

Also a rather fine version of PINEAPPLE HEAD by NATALIE IMBRUGLIA

And while I'm here, surely a "lady" is just a..

    UPTOWN GIRL - BILLY JOEL

  • Comment number 61.

#60 JBG, you are missing an opportunity! Surely Ascot today will be filled with horse traders, "ladies" in skimpy dresses and the occasional pickpocket?

  • Comment number 62.

Suzie, see #50 - well those WI ladies won't like Magic Addict's first choice. ;)

  • Comment number 64.

    # 47 Yes, I did g**gle Jan Morris, mainly as I thought you were recommending that 'lady' what was in 'Get me outta here' in the jungle for your DP (Surely NOT! thought I) then remembered she was Jan Leeming (leeming by name, leeming by nature)

    Quick Song suggestion:

'MY SWEET LADY' John Denver....(time to get my coat?)

#52 - Yes, I'm afraid that after the pimms has worked it's magic, that is what even respected members of the WI can be guilty of at Royal Ascot...

    Fritters!

I am sure that Nigel said fritters!

You can use all types of flowers for fritters. As well as the aforementioned elderflowers, how about courgette flowers or indeed nasturtiums?

We used to grow nasturtiums for the pet tortoise, another blast from the past.

Lovely bright and breezy day on the Somerset coast today. I may take up Simons idea of running along the beach with gay abandon! I might get some strange looks from the bucket and spade brigade, but hey ho.

Is it me, or is this week flying by?

Katymaty, the above tribute from Simon has to be the best get well card EVER!!

    Whoop whoop.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 70.

#69 MTF, I think I have the best get well card ever! It is still on the mantlepiece and is signed not only by the lovely Deebee and Birthday Mo, but the man himself!

I wonder if we could get him to sign an actual card for our Katy?

  • Comment number 71.

That is indeed one to treasure Alex :)

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 72.

#69 - MTF - it's flying by for me too - not sure why - nothing out of the ordinary happening in these parts.

Have I missed the lovely B&B going on his holidays? Haven't 'seen' him around much of late.

    ~ xx

  • Comment number 73.

#61 Alex - Last time I suggested it for "Royal Wedding Attendees" I was modded for the rest of the day. Seems like one of the wombles doesn't like us mocking the upper echelons of society!

FA Cup sponsored by Budw***er? What's that all about?

Random ingredient food - Coddled Cockles in a Courgette Coulis

  • Comment number 74.

#72 Toots, B&B has had to leave us due to work commitments. Do hope he will return one day.

#73 You have a point. Possibly best to be avoided then. We don't want you silenced.

I will take your Coddled Cockles in a Courgette Coulis and raise you a Turnip Tapenade with Truffled Tomatoes.

  • Comment number 75.

#72 Toots, B&B has left us. Work related problems with blogging. You can still find him over on FB occasionally.

  • Comment number 76.

#73 The magic of the cup? All but dead now.

It's formal name 'The FA Cup with Budweiser' is just utter cringe.

  • Comment number 77.

Combining ingredients reminds me of one of Humphrey Lyttleton's one-liners about the lovely Samantha on "I'm Sorry, I Haven't a Clue". It was broadcast by the BBC one lunch time so let's see if they allow it here:

After tasting the meat pies, Samantha said she liked Mr Dewhurst's beef in ale; although she prefered his tongue in cider!

  • Comment number 78.

Alex~G and Harry - thank you for the update - that's a shame - poor B&B - must check him out on FB and poss Twitter - still not sure about Twitter but as work has a Twitter account we're allowed to log on and it's a way to pass the day when things are less busy.

When I refreshed the font size is greatly reduced - is it something I've done?

    ~ xx

  • Comment number 79.

Harry #77 as Humph would have said - I don't see anything wrong with that.

Slight left field diversion, looking in on the bbc's text coverage of the cricket - they are comparing members of the Rolling Stones with the various Test Grounds (Mick Jagger being Lords) It just gets wierder and wierder!

    A

  • Comment number 80.

MTF, your mention of fritters has brought back a childhood memory.

My mother is an excellent cook but really doesn't enjoy it so tends to go for the lazy option. Nowadays, that takes the form of "it's not just any ready meal, its a X&X ready meal" but when I was little, I was provided with meals that were cheap and easy. Such as "cheese and potato pie" (mashed potato with cheese grated into it then popped in the oven), and luncheon meat fritters. Slices of luncheon meat dipped in batter then fried. I thought they were wonderful!

  • Comment number 81.

#77 - Harry, m' Lovely hee hee!!! Very good. And it's still there.

#78 - font size back to normal.

#79 - AT, m' Lovely, oh no I just can't think about that; it took a lot of concentration to get my DP list yesterday.

Grindstone is backing up so I'd better get back to it.

I tweeted a comment about Radio Times earlier, and they replied asking for more information. LOL!

#70 Alex, what a lovely idea! Wish I'd thought of it yesterday - I was in London with some time on my hands and I could easily have pooped by Radio 2 to try and get the main man to sign a card. Although I don't have her actual address, and the postman might have struggled with just 'KatyMac, Salisbury' on the envelope!

So, I've been thinking about my dinner party guest list - as I wasn't around to contribute yesterday:

    1. C S Lewis

    2. Eric Morcambe

    3. Ellen MacArthur

    4. Miranda Hart

    5. Brian Cox

    6. John Peel

    7. Stephen Fry

    8. James May

    9. J K Rowling

    10. Lord Ammo

    # 80 we had corned beef fritters: aka 'a coronary surprise'...still waiting, can't be long now.

Turning leftovers into some thing else was what my mum (a Scot) did in her sleep (a WWII child, to boot)

Hence I was known as a 'billious child' but was in fact suffering quite often with mild food poisoning - love you really mum!

Her stovies was the only good leftover food I remember.

Darn it. Question Time is from Aberdeen tonight. Wish I was going. Think it would be hilarious to see the edited bits.

#83 - Hmph Deebee - all those men and just you and Miranda representing us girlies. I did my best to have an even boy / girl mix - not easy - I had to leave out Paolo, Tom Cruise (I know not a poplear choice but I like his smile and twinkly eyes;)), Imran Khan, Omar Sharif, Michael Sheen and Woody from the Bay City Rollers ;)

#80 luncheon meat fritters? That was definitely a feature in my childhood. And probably one of the many fried items that were on the menu at Guide Camps.

ps does anyone have a contact number for this friend of Lord Ammo's and MTF's, Mr G Abandon (Gay to his friends) - quite fancy a gallop through the sand dunes, as the sun has finally come out.

Oh but wait, I hear the crack of wood on willow, so either there is some cricket to watch in the Uni parks, or the Croquet team are giving the ball what for.

Maybe back later, if wo*k does not interfere ;-)

Now then I'm totally confused by Tw!tter (other social networking...). why is it I have an e-mail notification to say the lovely Harry would like to follow me (don't be holding your breath for anything edifying, Harry) but i can't see where to accept / allow. Yet some eejit called 'the retronaut' (other eejits...) regularly posts things on my page without having been accepted / allowed. How do I accept Harry and get rid of the unwanted eejits? (No, Harry, I'm not saying you're an eejit :) )

We could have one big banquet for all of the above, although conversation could be difficult. So many people on others invitations list that I would be happy to have on mine.

#90 Toots, I got a notification saying you were following me so I thought I'd follow you too. It could be a case of "the blind leading the blind" but we might end up somewhere interesting :-)

#90 Don't know Toots, I've been trying to follow Harry, but it won't let me!

Luncheon meat fritters - not a good memory from school dinners; the only time I have every been ill because of something I ate, even the thought of them now makes me feel queasy!

Toots, you just need to go into Twitter, click on your list of followers, find Harry and click on 'follow'. Simples!

#87 - Deebee, I'm so sorry!!! Doh indeedio - I obviously read your list too quickly. I probably thought you'd invited Arthur McEllen (no I don't either) and J K from Jamirquai? A grand selection and slightly more evenly balanced than first thought.

Suzie - mmmmm yum!!! Stovies!!! Now you're talking. My Mum used to make them with leftover mince or casserole and, on occasion, we've had corned beef stovies - they were my fave.

#85 - Ooooh that's a must watch. I hope they get somebody in from the cintry, I just love Doric. I find it quite soothing; a real comfort. My Mum bought me a Doric dictionary a few years ago - it made me lol :) Ooooh I wonder if anyone will ask about Donald Trump's recent acquisition. A crying shame. I'd have thought it was an area of SSSI (do they have them in Scotland, if not they should).

#94 - Deebee, I managed the following Harry bit - he came up as a suggestion at the side. I've had an e-mail notification to say Harry would like to follow me but I can't see on Tw!tter where to accept the request. Also, how do I get rid of the eejits who follow me totally unbidden?

    Diana POW

    Carol Ann Duffy

    Quinten Crisp

    Berry Gordy

    Tom Jones

#94 - gone back in and found a grey button lurking in the top right corner which said notification of new request or something like that. Clicked on it and all's now well. Still need to get rid of the uninvited tho' ;)
