That was Rhymin' Simon that was...
So there I was finishing a wee 500 words on the delights of Paul Simon for Radio Times, when they call again (and when I say 'they' I mean the very lovely Alexis) and wonder whether I could make it 900 and interview the man himself. And could it be now please? Well I mean to say. I said yes because I've always loved his work but bang goes the prep time! I suddenly became the 15 year old at the London Palladium in 1975 (5 pounds of my own money) waving rather ludicrously at Mr Simon waiting in the wings. And he waved back! Now here I was waiting for him to call me. Well well. After a few gushing questions from me, I think it all went rather well and will be cobbling together (surely lovingly assemble?Ed) as soon as I finish here.
I have 'lived with' the album 'So Beautiful Or So What' for a few weeks now. I wasn't sure to start with. Beautifully played, with some wonderful rhythms and sounds, I couldn't get the melodies to stick. But it is worth sticking with and repays your loyalty. It reminds me most of 'Hearts and Bones' and all is well with the world.
Stuart Maconie is on Drivetime today, a show he has graced many a time. Today he brings with him 'Hope and Glory' his latest book. His colleague Mark Radcliffe's last tome took one song from each decade of his life and used it to write a lovely memoir: Stuart takes one event in each decade of the 20th century-the death of Queen Victoria, "Live Aid", the end of New Labour-and uses them to look at 'modern Britain'. Stuart is always an interesting chap, he's on from 6.
And tune-wise, we should then do songs of HOPE AND GLORY. You could do one over the other or both, whichever you fancy.
Have a gently reassuring and optimistic Wednesday, see you after 5.

I have got what could be called by some other radio programme a 'top tenuous' link with him....his dad was one of my tutors at Oxford 'Poly as was - & when I ended up working back there and was expecting baby #1 Ian (Mitchell) sold me David's cot as he (David) was then about 8 or 9 yrs old so they called it quits on the baby front!
I only realised when I saw David on 'Who do you think you are?' that Ian was his dad! My kids (who slept in said famous cot) have dined out on that one..spookily my son was called David too (not a comedian, but writes for a muso website:
https://www.culturedeluxe.com/2011/06/bon-iver-bon-iver/%29
So he has the verbosity of the previous cot incumbent.
ps there were no teeth marks or ebay sell-able carvings to mention.

RE aperitifs: I think a nice big bowl of punch would suit all eras!
Food-wise hmm, tricky one - roast hare? jugged fox? carved ice sculptures? - Oooo I am getting a touch of the vapours at the thought of the all that cooking, never mind Ms Austen.
No wonder people make simpler food nowadays not everyone can afford a cook!

#135 - Tortie, a friend started reading the book at the same time as me and she's given up. I finished it this morning and have to say I kinda enjoyed it. Unfortunately, our garden boundaries aren't completely sealed and as dear old Bernie Bunny can't be trusted not to wander off, he has a run. We move the run around the garden so the grass at the back of the house is a bit patchy. I didn't get time to do any grass cutting or reading yesterday afternoon :(
first instalment. Having to post in chunks again as the blog isn't happy with my rambling prose ;)

BigNick, before I forget - I hope it all goes well for you on your big swim.
Dinner party guests, hmmmmm, i'm off to ponder. I think I'd ask Billy Connolly to be my date and then everyone would be laughing so hard that they wouldn't notice the food.

As for the food. I think I would ask Hugh Fearnley Wittingstall to come up with something - as long as he didn't take us all to a layby or beach to forage for our supper! His River Cottage fodder always looks amazing - rustic and plentiful and usually locally sourced as well. I always wish we had smellyvision when he's on so that you could get a whiff of the aromas of his cooking.
I feel braised pigs-trotters and shin of beef in ale coming on! With hand-made rustic bread, of course.
Hungry now!

I think we all need to do a 'Doodle' calendar, or poor Old Nelson Mandela will be rushing from DP to DP all over the Country....
I 'met' him when he came to Oxford - hanging out of the Town Hall library, I got a pic of him and my boss together, which I know he treasures.
He (Mandela) 'walked' the line of us employees, smiling beatifically (which he does surprisingly often for one who could be so bitter and twisted by long incarceration)
by which brief encounter I say I 'met him....
The film 'Invictus' is very stirring - Mr e was living in SA when that famous rugby world cup was won - and even now has tears in his eyes when he talks about watching it there. He refused to watch the film, though, prefering to enjoy his own memory of it.
# 74 Frank Skinner - YES! Bostin' bloke - OR Jo Brand, very drole and witty both of them!

Victoria Wood also made my "reserve" list. A genius.
I think in general, comedians are wonderful. I struggled between Frank Skinner and Ed Byrne. But then there was Tim Minchin, Jack Dee, Bill Bailey, Dylan Moran ..... and then Billy Conolly pooped up there too!

DP lists, so many good names mentioned that I am considering increasing my small get together from 4 to maybe 10 which would mean space for Miranda, Billy Connolly, Richard Branson, the proclaimers and Barrack Obama. I might give Nelson Mandela the night off as he is on a few lists and probably wouldnt be hungry and replace him with either Mother Theresa or Gandhi.
