No pressure, no diamonds

Simon Mayo|08:14 UK time, Monday, 20 June 2011

(That was a tweet from Bear Grylls last night, in case life is full on for you at the moment...)

Morning/afternoon to bloggers all, hope that was a good weekend. My fathers day gifts involved sherbet lemons, some interesting looking chocolate with ginger bits in and a book of 1001'Beers To Drink Before You Die'. That pretty much covers it I reckon. Not exactly the healthiest weekend on record I have to confess as there were parsnip crisps involved on many occasions as well.

Now Saturday was a disappointment to me. It wasn't the weather, though that was dreadful and it wasn't the piles of washing/ironing brought on by the arrival of child 1 from university but my sedentary evening. I was happy watching Camelot-at that point, still a fully clothed edition-when I realised I should have been watching Bob Dylan in Finsbury Park. Much tweetage was coming from happy gig-goers, all trumpeting what was, by all accounts, a great gig. He even played "Tangled Up In Blue" and finished with an almost recognisable "Blowin' in The Wind". And where was I? Near horizontal on the couch that's where. I couldn't be bothered to wander the few miles to see one of music's greats. True he's been a tad average when I've seen him before and it was raining. And Guinevere was, well you know...So I renounce the TV again and will go in search of live music for the rest of my life.

Radio 2 Book Club is back today with Rosamund Lupton's "Afterwards". She made quite a splash with her debut 'Sister' and this new one is a terrific read. You can get 2 chapters for free while you are here to check it out yourself. It opens with a terrible fire at a school and sees a mother Grace, rescuing her 17 year old daughter Jenny. But they are both unconscious and it is in this state that they narrate the book. They are not spirits but they can drift hither and thither and Grace works out what had really happened at the school. Clever stuff and Rosamund will be here from 6pm.

And music today please for 22 year old RORY MCILROY whose extraordinary performance at the US Open made him the youngest champion there since Bobby Jones in 1923. I met him at Wimbledon a few years back (Rory not Bobby) and he was good company and a decent guy too. Northern Ireland now owns golf. So songs to mark his astonishing achievement please. You know how it goes.

Have a first class and smooth running Monday, see you after 5.

    Hi All

A very happy birthday to Julia40 (was 39)!

Thought of another couple of toons:

SWING YOUR DADDY by Jim Gilstrap

RIGHT DOWN THE LINE by Gerry Rafferty

My brother's concert on Saturday was absolutely brilliant! He really does have some talent as a composer - shame there's not more call for his style of music these days. I sometimes watch the Proms, and most contemporary 'classical' music sounds like an 'orrible din to me!

And on the subject of Camelot and girls who need to wear more, we stayed in Crawley on Saturday night, and Mr B and I went for a walk round the block before bedtime. Blimey - the young ladies of Crawley must certainly suffer from premature hot flushes... not only that, I'm sure they're really only about 4 ft tall, judging by the height of the shoes they felt the need to wear...;o) I have rarely felt more like a fish out of water.

Following my weekend of relative inertia, I got up at 6 and went for a 3.5 mile run. Feeling all happy and healthy now - sun and blue skies could be contributing to that too.

BP - I too have been watching PopStar to OperaStar on the +1 and then catching the results show straight after. It has inspired me to listen to more opera. Despite not understanding what's being sung, I think, sung well, it would be very moving. The popstars, to my untrained ear, cope really well with the change of style although perhaps their voices aren't as strong as opera stars who have spent years training. Simon Callow's knowledge is amazing.

Morning all. I have to say I'm enjoying Camelot. Easy on the eye and not too much concentration needed. Perfect for an hour vegging out in front of the TV after a hard week.

Missed concerts - I can claim two, both of which were unintentional. I missed Cara Dillon at The Stables three years ago when I had in in my mind that the gig was the following week. Cost me another ticket and an epedition south of the river to the Blackheath Halls on a Sunday the following month to rectify.

And I once accepted a plea from my sister one Sunday to go and help her buy a new TV, completely forgetting that I was supposed to be driving to Portsmouth that day to see Jewel :-(

    Morning all

Had a great weekend here, despite the weather trying to ruin everything and give me a permanently bad hair day.

Went to see Derren Brown (mind control bloke off the telly) on Saturday. I don't usually like 'magic' type of stuff but must admit the show was excellent with many exclamations of 'how does he do that?'.

Loved watching young Rory triumph yesterday but can't get my head in gear for any original suggestions.. lots of good ones so far though. The only one that springs to mind is very tongue in cheek..

LITTLE WHITE BULL - Tommy Steele !!!

    # 62 I see another Camelot fan - of the male persuasion (or is Ken a surname?).....

We used 'watch again' to see the last 'Shadowline' episode, in which you can appreciate that Christopher Ecclestone and Rafe Spall have more acting ability in their little fingernails than pretty much the whole Camelot cast...Eva Green (Morgan in Camelot) did a good impression of a woman in the throes of - well, just in the throes - but if you get to watch the last part of Shadowline - (and Luther, also excellent acting) go for it!

    Re Rory McIlroy theme:

His namesake & fellow Irishman Rory Gallagher can offer one:

    'Can't Believe It's True'

  • Comment number 66.

#65 Sorry Suzie, another male fan of Camelot here. I don't watch it just see Eva Green getting her kit off. Well into my fifties, I've seen enough naked women not to swoon at the sight of a naked breast or a glimpse of pubic hair. Some of the acting may not be up to RSC standard but are you really suggesting that Joe Fiennes can't act? I'll continue to enjoy it for the hour of escapist nonsense it is :-)

Is anyone watching Game of Thrones? Who'd have thought they could turn the novels into something as equally gripping. The last episode of the current series tomorrow although I understand a second series is in production so something to look forward to this Winter.

    # 65, yes you are right, Joseph finnes does an excellent job. Pretty much à seul though and as the Indie says, like a cross between an East End enforcer and Alastair Campbell.

Suppose I should watch it in the spirit it is meant, like Kevin Costners 'British' accent in Robin Hood, with a big pinch of salt.

#66 - Harry, I'm watching Game of Thrones and I am really enjoying it. When I first saw from the trailers that it was adapted from a book went to A**zon to see if I could buy it. I love reading but despaired a little when I found out that it was a whole series of books that hasn't finished yet. I am impatient by nature and I literally cannot put a good book down (much to the chargrin on of my hubby) as I cannot wait to find out how things all end. Currently re reading Wheel of Time books but I have timed it all wrong as I am already on Book 13 with the last book not out 'til 2012.

69 - Julia 40 - aw shucks, that was just pure coincidence. I used to sing along heartily with the chorus when I was little. The lyric of the song is quite sad, I think, if I've understood it correctly, but the choon is jolly.

  • Comment number 75.

#65 Yup, guilty as charged. Male and enjoying Camelot. And Luther, Shadow Line, The Wire, Sopranos, Wallander, Game of Thrones and Season 1 of Spiral (off DVD).

I won't pretend it's BAFTA-winning fare, but I'll take Camelot over the relentless misery of something like Eastenders every day of the week. A bit of light sword and/or sorcery has its place.

  • Comment number 76.

#73 - JPA, if you're looking for a fantastic read and a relatively quick one too, you could do worse than try Room by Emma Donohue - it was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize last year and is an amazing book. I think I may have mentioned it previously on this 'ere blog but it really is a fantastic read. At one point it had me on the edge of my seat and in a couple of places, tears rolling down my face. (Just had a text from a friend to say she's just finished Room - I only lent it to her Saturday evening). I'm reading In a Strange Room by Damon Galgut at the mo, another book on the Man Booker shortlist last year.

#73 Game of Thrones is tonight, twice and then at least one more showing through the week as well. Only the first showing on Monday has just the one ad break though. Got a bit of a shock when I switched to recording the early hours repeat while there were two other shows on at the same time on Monday night a couple of weeks ago and it had three ad breaks.

  • Comment number 78.

#76 - Thanks for the recommendation Toots. I generally get my ideas for what to read next off this 'ere blog and the list is getting ever longer, hehehe.

  • Comment number 79.

    GOLF GIRL by Caravan

  • Comment number 80.

#73 JPA, you may well be right that it is shown on Mondays but I'm out every Monday so I've been watching it on Tuesdays. I almost gave up on it after the first episode. Not because it was bad but because I found I was caring too much!

#74 :-) No batteries required, just a blue pencil.

If I can recommend a book worth reading (and I have emailed DT to suggest it as Book Club choice), try Chris Adrian's The Great Night. It's hard to do it justice in a brief summary, and saying that it's about Oberon and Titania setting up their court-in-exile in Buena Vista Park, San Francisco just makes it sound fey, but, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and I think Adrian is going to be feted before long.

  • Comment number 81.

Well done Bignick! Quite an achievement - and I bet you were relieved at the mild temperature of the water!

Harry, your post #66 actually made me feel a bit sad. You know, there's something you can get from your doctor... ;o)

I hadn't come across Game of Thrones, so I've Googled it - fantasy is not usually my sort of thing, but I might give it a go on ithingy. And I see Seeen Beeen is in it - he's always worth a watch. Haven't seen the last episode of Shadow Line yet, but I've been really enjoying it. And also Case Histories - the last one is tonight, sadly. Kate Atkinson better hurry up and write some more Jackson Brodie stories so we can see more of the lovely Jason Isaacs on TV!

Thanks for the read recommendations, I'm doing jury service in July and have heard that there's a lot of sitting about waiting - an excellent time to catch up on reading (when else do we get to do it?!)

I think that mobile has to be switched off all day - so no mensh chasing for me!

Re: Game of Thrones, I will give it a whirl, not for the Seeen Beeen chappie, but I do like Aidan Gillen (of 'The Wire' amongst other things) he's a superb actor - can be a baddie (usually) would like to see him in a lead goodie role.

#75: YES to Spiral..it seems to me that the lead lady in 'The Killing' took a lot of her character ideas from Laure Berthaud; btw the best small screen kiss in AGES took place in the last episode of Spiral between Pierre Clément and the usually nasty bit of stuff that is Joséphine Karlsson...classic moment STILL not on YouT*be.

#89 Absolutely Toots - we wouldn't have them any other way. Well, maybe just one or two modifications... ;o)

#90 Suzie, Mr B did jury service last year - and yes, there is a lot of sitting around. So depending on how big a case you get, you might end up catching up on quite a lot of reading!

I love Spiral but if it's any where near bring real then the powers that the prosecutors seem to have are extraordinary!

#74. Toots, its a small world, maybe I bumped into him yesterday :-)

#81. Deebee, the months of practicing in the albert dock on a Sunday certainly paid off and the water was warm compared to some water I have swam in. Plus it was nice to be able to see peoples legs in front of me when i put my head under water instead of murk.

Afternoon all, late but sorry no note! Golf does not float my boat however how will endorse U2 "One" as suggested by posh #2 or Sinatra "Straight Down the Middle". Miss most of the show on a Monday though as I take the youngest son to his swimming lesson!

Deebee - Did you see this interview with Jason Issacs in The Guardian? https://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2011/jun/19/jason-isaacs-i-like-being-anonymous

Glad you managed to catch the film score concert on the red button too :)

Been having a lazy day today, and will continue so as the twins are at respite tonight. Much needed it is too, and I really treasure this bit of time that I get to myself :)

#96 Thanks Zoe - what a great article about Jason Isaacs. I hope people read past the first couple of fangirly-style paragraphs! It's good to know that there is likely to be another series.
