Songs and stories

Simon Mayo|07:48 UK time, Monday, 4 April 2011

A sunny morning and all is well. Apart from the ailing, coughing and wheezing that punctuated what passed for a night. The arrival of tree pollen always brings with it the promise of a many weeks of nasal and bronchial misery. Commiserations to fellow sufferers and family members. Roll on summer.

Hope your weekend was all you wanted it to be and that Mothering Sunday was a triumph. Pub lunch on Sunday was enlivened by sitting next to Paul Whitehouse and family so conversation inevitably fell to discuss 2 things:Spurs faltering Premiership top 4 ambitions (bare with me) and Friday's joyous Top Of The Pops marathon on BBC4. I hurrumphed of course at the removal of the presenters from the mix but soon started to wallow in all the memories. Some of the footage of Procol Harum and Peter Sarstedt made me gawp as I realised this was as far back as I can remember watching, and hadn't seen them since. It was great stuff. Legs and Co (or was it Ruby Flipper?) dancing to Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols was something to take the breath away. More on Thursday!

Today we are back with the Radio 2 Book Club and 'My Dear I Wanted To Tell You' by Louisa Young. It's a big First World War novel with a difference, moving between Ypres, Amiens, London, Paris, Lancashire and Kent to tell of the experiences of women left at home as much as those of men in the trenches. The title comes from the standard letter that wounded soldiers were given to write to families while they were in hospital. I think it's going to be very big and you can read the first chapter here. Let me know what you think, and Louisa will be on air at 6 and then a web-chat at 6.30.

And let's do CHARLIE SHEEN oldies please. Sacked from his TV show, his live show had audiences howling for their money back and some of the worst reviews ever seen. Your inspired musical thoughts welcome. And I hope the blog behaves today.

I hope we all have a glorious and cheer-filled Monday, see you after 5

    Good Morning,

    Oh what a beautiful one.

Have noted today's oldies theme but as Charlie Sheen clearly has mental health issues I don't really feel comfortable participating. I know there isn't a cat in hell's chance he will be listening to Drivetime but I don't want to kick a man when he is clearly very down. Sorry to be a party pooper - but I know I can be honest with all you lovely people and you won't judge me for it.

However if it's a way to get a lovely song like 'Crazy' by Patsy Cline played, then thank you Charlie!

Re. the Beeb being un-pc, and this being a sensitive issue, I was appalled that they actively chose to play Wayne Rooney's f-word rant, with the soundtrack on, on Match of the Day on Saturday night, when they know tens of thousands of kids are watching. But on this issue - as someone who has suffered depression myself and been surrounded (well - not literally!!) by people with very serious mental illness in the past - some of whom took the ultimate step out of mental illness by ending their lives - I don't have a problem with this. Charlie has a problem, we all have problems, it helps to laugh at ourselves, and as long as it is done in a friendly way, let's not worry that we are offending anyone. I am sure many people suffering the problems Mr S has, should they hear the songs being played, would have a smile to themselves. And Billie - great picks!!

  • Comment number 41.

Well I for one don't feel uncomfortable about the subject. Let's face it Mr Sheen has done 7.5 seasons of "Two & a half men" for us to laugh at him, so why stop now. I appreciate the guy obviously has problems, however HE is the one going on a tour spouting his thoughts and beliefs; and his agent/publicity company are allowing him to do so.

This said watching some of Mr Sheen's video's on his YouTube channel, you could easily be mistaken for thinking he know's exactly what he is doing; especially with his own re-edit/send up of abc's 20/20 interview ... https://youtu.be/2LtBSqGzi3o

    As for song suggestions:

WHISKEY IN THE JAR - Thin Lizzy

  • Comment number 45.

Afternoon Everyone and, of course, Simon The Dude, The Team and the NYM,

Just pooping in to register I'm still about. Too busy to contribute today and haven't caught up properly. Suffice to say I won't be making any suggestions today - firstly out of respect of peeps with mental illness (I have suffered in the past with mild depression (which was bad enough) and wouldn't like to think anyone was laughing at me - not that I did anything outrageous). Also, as per usual, I can't think of anything to suggest.

KatyMaty - has the op been postponed? (I haven't taken time to catch up properly, apologoes)

Rightio, back to the grindstone - fingets crossed I can poop by to play tomorrow.

Take care everyone and have a lovely rest of the day.

  • Comment number 46.

    Hello All,

Tried to post this morning, but wouldn't accept for some reason.

Hope the day is going well for everybody

  • Comment number 47.

Yes Toots - last evening. An emergency took my op slot. Thankfully didn't make the long trek to hospital only to be turned back. Looking like a fortnight's time. Before Easter.

Brandon-B - the blog just refused to take any postings from us. Not that we were falling over ourselves to get on the mensh list. lol.

    :^)

  • Comment number 48.

Good Afternoon Each! In response to Andy's post #41. I would say that the intended purpose of Sheens participation in Two And A Half Men, was one of providing entertainment, and to be laughed along with. That is entirely different from taking the p*** , and laughing AT, someone who clearly is no longer in full control of his faculties. Perhaps we should all gather together outside our local hospitals and mock those gathered within. No, that seems too harsh a comment. I do think that the theme is somewhat misplaced though, and will proffer no suggestions myself.

Taking the ranty pants off, now.

This is not the same thing as 'baring with' Mr Mayo, another invitation I will not be joining in with.

I'm still keeping the sticker in my car, though. And in the meantime, I will 'bear with' the theme as it gets played out on the show. Blimey, I sound like a politician.

  • Comment number 49.

I am not a politician, I am a shopkeeper. Anyone that wants to throw tomatoes at me for my rant, can I point you in the direction of a certain little shop in the S8 region, where you can but some of the aforementioned fruit (yes, fruit) at a preferential rate reserved for bloggpoppets.

  • Comment number 50.

The shop will also provide your target. Oh, and please swap the misplaced 't' above with this 'y'. Thanks!

  • Comment number 51.

#40 BaxterandBertie you say, “it helps to laugh at ourselves and as long as it is done in a friendly way, let's not worry that we are offending anyone”.

Trouble is we’re not laughing at ourselves, are we? And in what way is this friendly? We’re making fun of someone who is going through a very public breakdown. Just because he’s rich and famous doesn’t make him fair-game.

#41 Andy , yes, he’s made TV and film comedies where the intention was to make us laugh but does that mean we can now laugh at any unfortunate incident that befalls him?

Feel free to make your suggestions for theme songs, I don’t have a problem with you doing that. But I won’t be. I’m here for the music so I just hope this sorry business produces some good tunes and we can get back to having fun tomorrow.

  • Comment number 52.

Good afternoon, just checking the blog to make sure it's working okay. I've had reports of 'jumping'...

  • Comment number 53.

#52 Peta, it is certainly jumping here. And can you do something about the refresh, please? Or at leastv give us more than 100 posts per page?

  • Comment number 54.

    Hello All

Goodness me, sounds like today's theme has turned out to be quite controversial! Not being one to be interested in the private goings-on of the rich and famous, the whole Charlie Sheen thing has somewhat passed me by, so I'm not really in a position to comment. Mental illness is an emotive subject though, and I can understand some folks being uncomfortable. I'll be very interested to hear our esteemed leader's come-back on the criticisms.

In other news, I'm off to see the dentist and hygenist later. I hate going to the dental hygenist - inevitably I'll get the pep-talk about flossing more regularly, which will make me feel about 7 years old. For goodness sake, they're MY teeth! Grrr.... or do I mean Aaaa. Last time I went, I was sitting in the waiting room, and to pass the time I tweeted a 3 worder 'dental hygenist hell'. Then when I got into her room, I realised she had Radio 2 on. Oops! And Simon read my 3 worder out - it prompted a discussion between him and Sally about how the hygenist had taken over from the dentist as the baddie. Double oops! Luckily, I was on my way home by then! Don't think I'll be risking any three worders today though...

    ;o)

  • Comment number 55.

#54 and yes I know, the word is spelt HYGIENIST.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 56.

    Afternoon all

#52 it's still jumping here Peta, but thanks for getting it working again after this morning's problems.

  • Comment number 57.

#55 At my dentist she's an oral health practitioner, a little pretentious but easier to spell :-)

  • Comment number 58.

#55. Which word is spelt HYGIENIST? The vast majority of words seem to be spelt entirely differently. No, that's not true. Only one word is spelt differently. But some words are spelt leaf. There is more than one of those.

  • Comment number 59.

#51 - Fair point Harry. I suspect that Charlie Sheen's advisors, however, have his best interests at heart less than we do, or his breakdown would not be happening in public at all - it would be happening in private and we would know nothing about it.

  • Comment number 60.

    Aha! There you are!

Deebee, so no 3 worders from you re Dentists/Hygienists then ;-)

Yes, this is a controversial one. I had tried to post a comment just as the blog broke. Can't remember what it was but along the lines of no choon choosing from me today.

Had a MUCH better day at work today. Shall leave the office at 4 with a smile on my face today.

  • Comment number 61.

  • Comment number 62.

re dentists... my son had to have two small fillings. His mum took him to the dentist, having instructed him to give his teeth a really good brush before he went, which he did. The dentist observed that his teeth weren't very clean.... it turned out that he only brushed the two that were going to be filled!

  • Comment number 63.

#59 B&B, I'm not here to argue with you and I hope we don't fallout over this but I don't see Charlie Sheen as just an individual earning a crust. He is a business. There have been many instances of 'advisors' doing everything they can to keep the 'cash cow' producing and this advice is not always in everone's best interests. How many great musicians would still be with us if someone hadn't given them that first pill to get them through the show?

  • Comment number 64.

Ooooooo ........... Radcliife & Maconie are playing John Martyn's "Sweet Little Mystery". This is so much better than SW :-)

  • Comment number 65.

Hi Harry and SM bloggers! - Can you explain more to me about the refresh problem so that I can explain it to the techs? I can't see what you see so it's hard for me to replicate things! Thanks! x

  • Comment number 66.

#63 - hi Harry - no, don't worry (this blog is still jumping!)... no argument at all. I agree that "Charlie Sheen" - especially through his activity on Twitter - is a brand, not an individual, and that his dirty linen being aired in public is probably providing income for lots of people. In which case, "Charlie Sheen" the brand is open to as much abuse as it gets really - you sell your name and people are going to want change out of it. Ditto the "Katie Price" brand or the "Peter Andre" brand. But Charlie Sheen "the person" is a completely different kettle of fish, with whom I have a lot of sympathy. He is enduring problems that we all face. Or that friends and family of us all have faced or will face in the future. I have no problem poking fun at the Charlie Sheen brand. I sympathise entirely with the Charlie Sheen person, sat with his head in his hands in a corner of his office or home, dealing with a thousand demons while his life falls apart. I was that soldier, and I feel very sorry for him. But I think most of the finger-pointing - and mickey-taking - is actually at the brand, not the person. Hope that makes sense and I'm not digging a deeper hole.....

  • Comment number 67.

Hi Peta, once the blog gets beyond 100 posts, it is accessible in pages with 100 post per page. For instance, if there are 250 posts, there are 3 pages. When you refresh, it takes you back to page one instead of the most recet posts.

    Hope that explains it.

  • Comment number 68.

#64 - ooooo - sadly can't listen, but it's good to know. Was listening to "Never Let Me Go" and "Angeline" over the weekend. Do you know Urethra Franklin's version of the former?

  • Comment number 69.

Am I right in seeing parallels between Sheen and Gascoigne in terms of the circle of people around him not seeming to be helping him out of his situation?

  • Comment number 70.

#64 DAB radio needed for the car now I feel. I don't really understand why Radio 2 dumped Sony-nominated broadcasters off the FM frequency.

  • Comment number 71.

#66 B&B, I understand what you mean and I don't see the hole you're digging getting deeper. However, I personally find it difficult to differentiate between the "Charlie Sheen" brand and Charlie Sheen the human being.

We've spoken before about modern Western Civilisation and "the end of Rome"; this stinks of the Circus and the 'venationes'.

  • Comment number 72.

#69 - I'm no expert on this Ken (I'm not an expert on anything, except maybe the inner sleeves of David Bowie albums 1969 - 76), but I think there is a cycle of behaviour for a lot of these "celebrities in trouble", where they start to lose control of their lives but still need to have their egos supported. And they often can't get help until their ego has been thoroughly deflated. So they hang around with people who support their ego because that feels better than hanging around with people who support their needs... which is very different.

  • Comment number 73.

#71 - a wry smile of agreement Harry. But don't get me started on that one or I'll be here all day again!

  • Comment number 74.

Getting back to music: having Radcliffe & Maconie on for 3 hours each afternoon is not quite the liberating experience I'd hoped for. I'm reluctant to go searching for the musical links this blog throws up in case I miss something LOL

  • Comment number 75.

*is really enjoying Messrs Radcliffe and Maconie*

  • Comment number 76.

#74 Me too Harry. Am playing online poker on the other 'half' of my screen ...

.. have just won $104,000 in play money ...

  • Comment number 77.

#76 Katy, wasn't it a great show? I think Radio2 are missing a trick letting them go to 6Music. I don't think I will affect the ratings much because I always switched SW off anyway, but I wonder how many people will make the switch?

  • Comment number 78.

#68 B&B - listening to Aretha Franklin "Never Let Me Go" now :-)

  • Comment number 79.

#77 Me for one! Loved the rare occasions I got to hear them on R2 in the evening. A complete joy to have access to their 3 hours in the afternoon on 6.

I find I can even get some work done.

Liking the sound of the show that has followed ...

.. must go and investigate ..

  • Comment number 80.

#68 - well done Harry... I had never heard it, but you can tell that this is the version Big John had in mind when he recorded his. Love both actually - the '50s original (Johnny Ace?) is a bit doo-wop for me.

  • Comment number 81.

I am being picked up to go and do some shopping shortly - seems as though I shall be here for another week or so I've been told, so I may as well buy some lovely ingredients and have an indulgent cook-in - I may even stretch to a glass of wine. This all feels like an unexpected holiday.

Probably just as well I won't hear the show today ...

    *shudders*

    :^D

  • Comment number 82.

I think the decision to let Mark and Stuart leave will come back to bite Bob Shennan. I know it's great for 6 music, and has somewhat completed the line-up for 6 - it's pretty formidable. Maybe there is a train of thought that one day, 6 Music will become 'The' most listened to station if the new era revolution really does take over, however, it seems that Radio 2, at present, is morphing into Radio 1, and I don't like it.

On Sheen - he has chosen to live his life in the spotlight, therefore must live the bad bits in the spotlight, as well as the good bits. Whether or not the free for all way of living we are presented with these days is the right way to go is subjective, but it's here, so mentally challenged or not, it's out there in all it's gory detail. I'm not sure moralising over the issue or claiming it's doing down mental impairment as an illness in terms of exposure is a particularly strong argument. I would imagine that most, if not all of us here, can distinguish between the car crash that is Charlie Sheen, and 'regular' sufferers of mental disablement, for want of a better phrase.

Simon is doing nothing wrong. It's out there, and it has become a parody, be that right or wrong - you can't start brushing individuals away because it's difficult to watch or comprehend. I fail to see how naming up a few songs in relation to a public meltdown is anything but relevant. If some folks are offended, then so be it. That is, however harsh it sounds, life, and part of the grand scheme of things.

If we avoided delicate situations because someone, somewhere, might just be offended, we may as well all go live in a cave and never come out in the light of day again.

Yes, the blog is jumping more than Carl Lewis into a sand pit.

  • Comment number 83.

#80 B&B, Ahhhhh, "The late, great Johnny Ace"! Listening to that version now too. The big band arrangement detracts rather than adds something to the song. I wonder what I'd think if I'd come across them in a different order?

  • Comment number 84.

#83 cut and paste for Harry, "because you're worth it":

It was the year of The Beatles

It was the year of The Stones

    It was nineteen sixtyfour.

    I was living in London,

With the girl from the summer before

It was the year of The Beatles

It was the year of The Stones

    A year after JFK.

We were staying up all night,

    And giving the days away

And the music was flowing, amazing

    And blowing my way

    On a cold December evening

I was walking through the Christmas tide

When a stranger came up and asked me

If I'd heard John Lennon had died.

And the two of us went to this bar

And we stayed to close the place,

    And every song we played

Was for The Late Great Johnny Ace

Gotta go guys - have a lovely evening, good luck with the menshes, and hope to see y'all tomorrow.....

#68 & #87 Paul, I think B&B was quite unaware of his Freudian slip! Oooo matron!

Didn't make a suggestion today. The one that sprang to mind probably would have failed the taste test :-)

Woohoo... I got a mention today with 'People are Strange'! :o))

I know haven't been blogging here for very long but I think today has definitely been a low point for the blog.

But, at least our complaints about the blogs "refresh" has been brought to the attention of techies.

    Excelsior!

P.S. I think B&B was well aware of what he was posting @ #68

Harry, I'm sorry that you feel that way. I think one of the great things about this blog is that we can occasionally disagree with one another, but without falling out. And that includes Simon. I hope you'll come back tomorrow, when I predict the theme will be something suitably flippant and frivolous.

Wooo hooo!!! Back to more than 100 posts per page and refreshes back to the point you were at. THANK YOU TECHIES AND THANK YOU PETA - YOU'RE MARVELLOUS. Sorry to shout - just excited!!! Yippee!!!

Ooops a doodle - just realised we're not past 100 yet so the first part of that outburst hasn't been tested yet and therefore the second part hasn't been properly tested yet either. Doh!!!

Ah well, at least the blog's not jumping - you must've done something right.
