Making your mind up
Hello again and welcome to the world's only bouncing blog. Some people pay money to have their screen perform special effects, we offer it for free. And just in case you're fed up with all the techie problems, a word from those who know...
"We're sorry that there have been a few problems on the blog recently. The blogs technical team over in White City have put a temporary fix in place, and hope to get to the bottom of the problem shortly! " Patience is a virtue. This blog is character- forming.
While the Top of the Pops frenzy continues, I was called by an Irish radio station last night to talk about the impact of the show. TOTP was always big news there but I only realised that it was broadcast there at all when looking at my paycheck. You got £200 for presenting the show and £2.50 for its broadcast in the Republic. This never seemed entirely fair on the British licence payer but I thanked the Irish for the £2.50 anyway.
Tonight we welcome the delightful Emmylou Harris to Drivetime. One of the great American singer-songwriters and one of the most accomplished backing vocalists ever. Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan, Warren Zevon, Linda Ronstadt, John Denver, The Band and Elvis Costello will all testify to her skills. Her new album is called Hard Bargain, which is her cover of the Ron Sexsmith song. She sings too of her time with Gram Parsons- the opening song The Road is a corker.
And songs today please inspired by THE REFERENDUM please. So that'll be YES/NO songs essentially, unless you know of tunes which reflect the first-past-the-post/alternative vote choice posed on May 5th. Mark your box below.
Have a harmonious, peaceful Tuesday, see you after 5.

One of the best nights ever when I first saw Emmylou at the Albert Hall. Bob Harris probably had his view from the box he shared with Johhnie Walker obscured by my large head sitting just in front.
That was the first time I saw Patty Griffin as well. What Simon said about Emmylou's backing vox is spot on - she came on during Patty's support slot to sing harmonies on "Mary" and it's just the most beautiful sound you an imagine. Two voices and Patty's acoustic guitar just filling the Albert Hall - truly amazing night.
If anyone doesn't have the Spyboy live album (or DVD) I highly recommend it. You also get to appreciate what a fine harmony singer Buddy Miller is too and what a stonkingly good drummer Brady Blade is on a fine mix of earlier songs plus Wrecking Ball stuff. It's all good :-)

As yesterday's hot blog topic has been referred I just want to make some observations:
When Simon introduced the theme on the show he mentioned the standing ovation Charlie Sheen had received for a recent performance. However in the blog he focussed on all the negative press Charlie Sheen has been receiving. The negativity when the theme was initially presented was what made me feel uncomfortable. It seemed to be leading us towards songs that would ridicule the man.
Gently ribbing each other and taking the mickey out of people in a light hearted way are things that go on on this blog and I am all for that. Also, I do get the "slebs put themselves up there so they have to take the rough with the smooth" argument but I fear in this case the man himself has lost control. Remember what happened to Michael Jackson?
I also had in mind that mental illness is a topic that has been discussed on here and was concerned the tone of the blog could cause upset to people who, although I have never met them, I really do care about.
Two things I love about this blog are how friendly the participants are and what a positive vibe it has. Long may those two things continue.
Have a good day.x

#62 - Julia - At the moment I am re-reading all the Harry Potter books, prompted by B&B Minimus, who wanted to re-read them all himself before the last film comes out in the summer, and I am also reading Return of the Native by a Mr T Hardy of Wessex. Interested to see on "Lambing Live" on the telly last night they referred to "raddle", the stain put on rams' undercarriages so they know which ewes they have "covered" - and hence Diggory Venn, the Reddleman, in Return of the Native came to mind. And regularly dipping into the Guinness Encyclopedia of Folk Music at the moment (copy kept in smallest room in house!). Discovered - chatting about music on Facebook the other night - that Jimi Hendrix once asked my friend's mum out on a date... Has anyone else ever been "asked out" by a superstar?
