Stumped

Simon Mayo|06:16 UK time, Friday, 26 November 2010

The middle of the night is a fine time for irrational thought. Woke at 3.50 for some reason (surely not that last glass?) and fumbled for the mini-radio that spends it's time lost in the bed clothes. Now that the test match is on, there is the beguiling prospect of checking how England are doing. Just a quick listen maybe.

So as I join, England have had a good spell and taken 4 wickets in one session. Ooh well maybe this'll be fun I think, so I remain tuned in to Jonathan Agnew and team AND NO MORE WICKETS FALL AT ALL. NONE! So then the madness takes hold and I think maybe it's me. It's because I've started listening. If I hadn't switched on, England's spell would have continued. So I switch off and try to get back to sleep but its too late and too early at the same time. How does that happen?

Anyway sorry for messing up a good days cricket. I'll take the blame.

Oh yes, 2 shows to do. 5 Live at 2 with Dr Kermode and movie reviews first up. Should have an interesting chat with a new director called Gareth Edwards who has 'Monsters' as his debut film. It's very impressive too and testimony to him and his team that you would never know it was all done for 10 guineas. Then on a very cold motorbike to R2 central for the mighty, all-conquering, should-go-on-till-midnight, hot-rocking, unmissable ALL REQUEST FRIDAY. Yes we are there again. Do please leave that top song idea you've been mulling over in the box below.

Have an energising and surprising Friday, see you at 2.05 or 5.05 or maybe both. Then I plan to sleep for 24 hours and not spoil anything.

    Morning Simon

Looks like I may be one of the first today - Please can you play whatever MTF wants for the first record. I think she may be on later but she changes her mind so much you never know ;-p.

    Good morning Simon

We at ChezNic Towers set the alarm for 5am and watched a bit of The Ashes in bed with a hot cup of coffee (one each, we're oh so decadent!). Then when we got up for toast and more coffee they went in due to bad light - doh!

I feel that tonight will see an Ashes marathon - not forgetting play starts at 11.30pm UK time.

And I have a girly crush on Stephen Finn. Or maybe it's a maternal thing .... ?

As for ARF, what about .....

This Charming Man - The Smiths

Sums up both Beefy Botham and Bumble to a T, methinks!

    Laters lovelies.

    Deevs, 42 not out!

    Good Morning Each!

And I thought it was me that had ruined the cricket. It seems that my tuning in at that time was entirely coincidental, and the true fault lies elsewhere. Good! That means that I shall have no trouble doing the same tomorrow.

    And so to my ARF.

Simon, should you continue in your wicked way and ignore the delightful MTF again, perhaps 'Jazz, Delicious Hot, Disgusting Cold' by The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band would fit the bill. However, should you believe in Karma, you might try to realign your cricket curse to a more favourable position by finally granting the Tooth Fairy her fondest wish. In wg=hich case, my ARF shoice might one day make a fine Jazzy Showstopper choice. Only saying!

Have good days, one and all. Careful of the underfoot conditions.

    Morning all

Hope that your snow wishes come true ... that you can get to where you need to if need be ... and that you get the chance to play if you don't

Please may I request Tie Your Mother Down by Queen ... just because ...

    Happy Friday xx

  • Comment number 5.

    Morning All,

Just popped in briefly before I catch the train to go to the O2. Hoping to see a good singles match between Nadal and Berdich. And I may even catch up with Blogger Mo who is also going to be there.

Simon, why do you keep a radio actually inside your bed? I think you may be taking your work just a little too seriously!

Can I make a cheeky request for ARF? Let's Stick Together by Bryan Ferry would be rather wonderful!

See you all later, Mcw x

  • Comment number 6.

    Friday already?

Blimey, where did that week go!

Ah yes, this time last week, three of us (Myself, MadChickster and Deebee) were in a lift with none other, than the 'young man' (said in a Dick Emery style voice!) who picks the tracks to be played on the show.

Delightful he was too. He picks some wonderful tracks to keep us all entertained and I hope eventually he will pick a particular song that I am keen to hear.

So 'young man' could you please have a rummage around for a track called....

    *** Twilight ***

    By ELO.

    For me, Mobile Tooth Fairy.

It would round the week off very nicely and despite me saying on Wednesday that I dont like cricket, I would be fair bowled over :)

    Good Morning,

It's cold but bright here - one of those days where your glasses steam up when you walk back in the warm after the cold school run.

Any intriguing discussion about men wearing tights has been taking place on Breakfast. Maybe that's the answer for that cold motorbike journey, Simon.

As for ARF suggestions - I am going to make the same as last week and the week before and the week before - in the hope that one day you will...

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER or NOW THAT WE'VE MADE UP by Southgate and Leigh.

Hope Simon and all bloggers have a fab weekend.x

  • Comment number 8.

    Morning All!

Simon, when you are blogging, might I suggest that you are providing a life-line link 'back home' to our cricket team. Therefore they are relying on you to be an inspiration to them! No doubt, as you listen in to them in the middle of the night, they will be tuning into your show via the internet in their early hours as your show kicks off. Therefore my choice for ARF would be something stirring... something that provokes passion... something to help them summon up the strength and drive to claim the next five wickets in the morning... So what about a bit of TUBTHUMPING by Chumbawamba!

    PS - STILL NO SNOW!

  • Comment number 9.

Good morning Simon, Team and fellow blogpoppets!

Goodness, has a week gone by already? This time last week, we were just walking through the R2 portals.

In the unlikely event that you DON'T play Twilight for the young and gorgeous MTF, please play:

    ALL NIGHT LONG - RAINBOW

As I have said before, a girl needs a bit of rock every now and again.

    Alex-Girl

  • Comment number 10.

OOh Alex, I hope you get that one played.

There will be some serious steering wheel bashing if you do.

How hard can you hit the steering wheel before you set the airbag off?

Its the most beautiful morning here and I have set myself the task of cleaning the oven, yuk!

    Mornin' all...

It's cold, frosty and my hands are trembling as I type. Brrrrrrrr. Still, most of that is offset by the memory of the dream I had last night. Best kept to myself I think... :-)

So, how about Hazy Shade Of Winter - The Bangles or Simon & Garfunkel?!?

Or the Love Unlimited Orchestra - It May Be Winter Outside...?

Have a good weekend everyone...time for some work.

    TTFN.

  • Comment number 12.

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Can we really have ARF till midnight? Please!

#6 MTF, I don't think the guy we met actually chooses the songs - my understanding was that he goes through the blog and picks them out of all our other musings and bon-mots. The final decisions are made by Simon and the producer.

    #8 Ethics_Man, what a lovely sentiment!

So after a rather exciting week the cherry on the cake would be to hear as the ARF opener, the mighty Level 42 and SOMETHING ABOUT YOU.

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 13.

Well whatever, he was still a very nice 'young man' and seemed to be pleased to have met us too :)

  • Comment number 14.

    Morning each!

No snow here in sunny Bournemouth, but I have a feeling it's on it's way!

    My ARF this week is;

WOULD I LIE TO YOU? by EURYTHMICS

#10 - now there's a Homework Sucks question if ever I heard one!

  • Comment number 15.

    Morning Simon, morning all

Today is the day we all step aside for the Mobile Tooth Fairy, as it's about time somebody granted her wish and played her song, which is the equivalent of slipping £1 under her pillow (or if you're Matt, I seem to recall it's £2.20).

But if you are still not so inclined, it might be nice to hear

JOHNNY B. GOODE by CHUCK BERRY

Or given the bone-chilling weather outside and the prospect of much sledging and snowball fighting over the weekend, something by COLDPLAY woud be good - VIVA LA VIDA perhaps?

    Keep warm

    John BG

  • Comment number 16.

#14 & #10 - I would venture to say that you can hit it as hard as you want because I reckon it being set off is linked to the bumpers. But I'm not brave enough to prove myself right!

  • Comment number 17.

#9 I wonder if Graham Bonnett is now wearing his hair long and greasy now that lots of his rocking peers tend to have shorter hair as a result of the ravages of time :-)

Simon, can you please play "Remedy" by the Black Crowes. A quick glass of "remedy" on a cold and frosty day might be just what's required.

  • Comment number 18.

    Morning All,

Like everybody I hope that this is the week that MTF's wish is granted. However as a back up suggestion

'I Want You to Want Me' Cheap Trick

I still have the 'Live At The Budokan' in YELLOW vinyl, 'hay we were just so crazy in those days'

    Have a good day everybody

  • Comment number 19.

I have just taken a photo out of my office window. I am on the 24th floor of Canary Wharf tower and this morning, my view is framed by two other glass towers which are sparkling in the sunlight. The river then runs across the the frame with the O2 directly in the centre (Hi McW and Mo!) and then the river twists behind the O2 and I can see the Thames Barrier and the slopes up to Shooters Hill, shrouded in mist. It is absolutely beautiful.

  • Comment number 20.

Alex - that is another reason you should be on that tweety site (best not to mention brand names). You could then upload that picture to share. Rips has just done that with a view from a Bridge (can't work out which one but it has the Houses of Parliament in the foreground and then the London Eye further up/down stream).

    mtd ffb xxx

  • Comment number 21.

#19 Alex, that sounds lovely. Can you put it on FB?

    X

  • Comment number 22.

#20 I signed up to that tweety thing last night and really can't figure it out! I will persevere but might need someone to show me how it works!!

#21 I think the sun was too bright - it hasn't turned out that well so you will have to use your imagination!

  • Comment number 23.

#22 It's very straightforward really. It's a bit like the status on FB - you can write about what you're doing, how you're feeling - anything really, except you are limited to 140 characters. Your tweets are only read by people who are following you, and if you tweet a reply to another tweeter it can just be read by people who are following you AND that person. For example, if I sent a tweet to Simon and you were following both me and him, you would also see it. But if you were following him but NOT me, you wouldn't. You can also send direct messages to people, which are ONLY read by the person they're directed at. But I THINK that only works if the person is following you - not 100% sure, as I've never tried to send a DM to someone who wasn't following me. A friend of mine did once have a DM from an actor - I think he was called Sam Cooke, nobody I'd heard of - and she was able to send a DM back.

Hope I haven't confused you even more! Give it a go - I picked it up, and I'm not exactly a computing genius!

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 24.

#23 Cool - will try harder! How do you find someone to "follow" them?

  • Comment number 25.

#24 There is a 'Find People' button - you can type in their name - either real name or Twitter name if you know it. Mine is Deebee_9. But be careful, there are quite a lot of 'fake' Twitter celebrities out there. Another way is to look at who your friends are following.

And if you're VERY lucky, when you tweet a celebrity you might even get a reply! Some celebs are a lot better at replying than others though, so more often than not you won't get anything back. Although it doesn't necessarily seem to relate to how famous they are. Mr Evans is quite good at replying to tweets - I haven't personally had any from him, but there's a fair few bloggers who have. I have to say our own Mr Mayo doesn't very often reply - (I guess nobody's perfect...), which is why I was so pleased for MTD when she got one from him yesterday! I've had 3 from him, but two of those were in reply to me asking why the blog was late!

    X

  • Comment number 26.

    My ARF suggestion for today:

    Coldplay - Speed of Sound

    Laters!

    Nic

    x

  • Comment number 27.

    Morning Blog-dwellers.

Here's a ARF thought from me - Cold as Ice by Foreigner. could be appropriate? No snow in Leicestershire atm.

As to the tweety site, I follow a number of wildlife presenters and producers and many of them do reply to tweets. Gives one a nice *I matter* feeling. I did introduce myself to one wildlife presenter at a wildlife fair by saying "hello I'm XXXX and I follow you on twitter" to his credit he knew who I was(or is that because he thinks I'm a stalking nutcase?) anyway he was very nice & signed a book for me.

Going back to ARF I would love to hear Blood on Blood by Bon Jovi. My best friend and I did the "cut each others hands" years ago, whilst rather inebriated, but we chickened out on the cutting and just did it with a needle in each other's thumb. It worked (sort of) but it wouldn't have made such a good lyric. ;)

    Have a good weekend everyone.

    Good Afternoon,

#6 MTF - There seems to be an awful lot of goodwill coming your way re your ARF choice so I feel I should join in and say "good luck" with it.

#19 Alex-Girl - Thank you for virtually sharing your amazing view. I am visualising it as I type :-)

Off to help out at the pre school Christmas Party now. Wish me luck...

  • Comment number 31.

#27 LazyRizzo, I'm sure he didn't think you were a stalking nutcase. In my experience most celebrities - particularly those of the presenting genre, who tend to be less ego-manic than maybe actors or musicians are* - are happy to meet their fans and show their appreciation of YOUR appreciation! And you're absolutely right - it is lovely to be 'know' and feel that you matter to them.

    Deebee X

*yes I know that's a sweeping generalisation. I'm sure there are plenty of self-effacing actors and musicians around...

Have a great time at the bolthole Alex. Who knows, you may get snowed in and not have to go back to London on Sunday! BTW, for some reason I have great problems saying the word 'bolthole' out loud. It always comes out as 'bolthall' for some reason.

Good luck with your daughter's 11+, Kev. I'm sure she'll walk it. I did 11+ many moons ago (yes I really am that old). I don't remember much about it, other than I passed and went to the Grammar school, and my best friend didn't, and went to the comprehensive.

Just pooped by to catch up - I reckon the blog had a lovely evening down the pub as it's hiccuping away good style here :(

Tortie my lovely hope the antibiotics have kicked in and you're feeling better.

Unlucky MTF, I have a feeling it was probably between you and SW tonight.

Alison - you are a v lucky lady to have a gorgeous hubby to BBQ steaks on an evening as cold as this.

Brandon from the previous blog - it was so lovely when you said your family and friends call you Brandon so you thought it was appropriate to use it on the blog.

Alex_G - hope you have a fab weekend at the bolthole. I too have tried to get on with Twitter but, even with a Deebee Masterclass, I was so flumoxed by it I gave up. Also, feel I should change my user name but don't know how to, it's a little bit rude :S

MTF, I expect Sally Traff is lying down in a darkened room with a damp edition of the Radio Times after the day she's had, bless her.

Gazmondo - the thought of Kos in July will keep you going through the winter - start your list of things to pack with suncream and make a mental note to apply it to all your exposed areas. One time, I took the GBs to the seaside (Gibraltar Point, near Skeg) and they played happily all day long. It wasn't 'til we got home that I realised I hadn't applied any cream to the elderGB's back and it was bright red. I felt like the worst Mum in the world that day, I was so upset. It still gives me a funny feeling in my tum when I think about it now. Poor wee scone.

Rightio, I'm outta here. I have a child-free weekend and intend to make the most of it. Hoping to go shopping with a lovely, lovely friend but she's been without her voice today which is a nuisance (for her ;)) so I'll have to see how she is in the morning. Will definitely be tuned in to Strictly tomorrow evening. Without meaning to be unkind, I hope this is the weekend Widdi is voted off. I know she's a good sport but I'm afraid I don't find it at all entertaining and would be so disappointed if one of the contenders was voted out. I know it could be a 'Rage Against The Machine' thing but I love Strictly so much I want it to have a good final. Loving Artem this series - his smile would make me go weak at the knees. He has lovely twinkly eyes. *sigh*

To quote the much missed Malcolm Powder (he and i have been chatting on FB tonight - lovely chap), Weasant Pleekend.

Hope to see you all Monday :)

#67 & #71 We have a rather fantastic 'barbeque shack' to protect ours from the elements ... with total disregard for 'elf and safety it is made out of highly combustible materials and has a thatched roof ... this always adds an exciting element of danger to cooking ... hence the fact that Mr from Eastleigh does it

  • Comment number 74.

    Does anyone recognise this?

On Graham's show I've just heard Annie Lennox singing "In The Bleak Mid Winter" and the tears poured down my face.

And it's not just because it's a Christmas Carol nor 'cos it's Annie Lannox. I can't hear Brandon Flowers voice without crying. And it used to happen earlier this year with Fyfe Dangerfield.

Then it could be an oldie like "On a bus to St. Cloud". Anything really.

We've had a pleasant day although I must admit to going no further than the bins! Made a start on Christmas Cards. Mr.BP went for the papers. Fortunately, we didn't need to shop although the roads are clear. We still haven't had any snow. Just HAIL showers. But COLD does not describe it. Sorry, haven't got a temperature thing.

We're going to eat on trays in front o'telly and X Factor. Smoked Salmon

in a Lemon & Creme Fraiche Sauce with Tagliatelle and Crusty Bread.

(I'm sure all of that is mis-spelt!)

Then there's the GORGEOUS Johnny Depp!

Nightnight. God Bless. Have Sweetdreams and please God see you all tomorrow.

    Love

Snow! Ice! Derby losing! Not the best Saturday ever. And now more painting to do. Roll on Monday.

    Evening All,

Just a sprinkling of snow here in East Anglia. The only problem I have had is when the Murray/Nadal match clashed with Zoe Ball on Radio 2 interviewing one of my teenage hero's, Bryan Ferry. Simple, have the match on mute and listen to the radio- a strange combination but it worked. That new album of his sounds pretty good. Pity Murray didn't win, but he put up a good fight.

BTW I don't know if Mo agrees with me, but going to see the tennis at the O2 is totally different from the Wimbledon tennis experience. For one, it is almost like being at some sort of rock event at the O2, with the music and lights and videos in between points. Not sure what Dan Maskell would have made of it all!

Keep warm and safe, Mcw x

    Morning All

Very chilly here this morning, but no snow. Hope everybody's okay and not suffering too much from the wintry weather.

Glad to hear you had a good time at the O2, Mcw. I imagine another difference would be the lack of strawberries and cream. Did you and Mo manage to meet up?

Hope everyone has a good Sunday.

    Afternoon all

Snow tipping down - we've already had about 4 inches! We went out for a walk in it and caught snowflakes on our tongues!

Stuffing balls made and in freezer, Delia's spiced red cabbage simmering in the oven, cranberry chutney simmering on the hob, lamb shanks in the slow cooker - domestic goddess about to collapse here!

Snow permitting, we're off Christmas shopping tomorrow - play nicely everyone, I'll listen out for mentions after 5.00

We've had a very very lazy day which is terribly naughty (and all the better for it) because there are a million things to be done. The 3pm promised snow hasn't come. There's an old Lancashire expression "Too cold for snow" - maybe that's why. It has become very cold.

#92 Tortie What a delicious post! Domestic Goddess Indeed! Enjoy your shopping trip.

#80 Brandon poor thing. You've mentioned it a few times - Why is your office so cold? Can't you sort it?

JbG - Hope you've negotiated successfully and are off to see Miranda. Have a jolly time.

We're having an early supper, it's in the oven, 'cos our meals have gotten out of sync today. Its "Pasticcio" which is Lamb mince, onions & garlic, cooked with herbs, stock and red wine. That's put in a dish and it's covered with a mixture of pasta, eggs & a cheese sauce. It all fluffs up and is truly delish.

May pop back after X Factor.

    Have Nicetimes

'ey up! . Sunday has turned out quite well. The usual morning in the shop, apart from the fact that we were much busier than usual, (we always are in inclement weather), followed by an afternoon of graft and painting in the flat. We now have floors (largely), and we've broken the back of the painting that needed to be done at this stage. Tomorrow, the builders should be removing staircases and refitting new ones in new positions. That will mean that the shop refit can finally get under way.

What is that over there? Could it be a light at the end of a tunnel?

#94, sounds like you are getting there Paul,

#93 Sounds a nice meal Billie.

Office gets cold in evening, this an old house and the room has no heating, use a portable radiator during day which is fine but as I only nip in and out in the evening its not on, no hardship really

  • Comment number 96.

    Me again.

Nothing much to report except glad to see the Rage Against The Machine thing with Wagner is over. I've actually never heard of "The Wanted" & Justin Beiber, of whom I have heard, did nothing for me.

#94 Hold on in there, Paul. To quote a seldom heard of Liverpool Group -

    "It won't be long, yeh.........."

#95 Brandon - it was! And you're quite right "no hardship, really". Aren't we all just spoilt brats?

    Nightnight. God Bless.

Please God see you all in the morning.

    Good Evening,

Not quite sure what made me log in now. Guess this blogging business must be strangely addictive.

Question now is do I lurk in the hope of getting the century? Think not as it could be a long night...
