Gaily, sorry to hear that - hope it goes okay.



Now, earlier I mentioned that I had a thought about ARF. So here it goes, ready for your normal spirited debate.



Every Friday, we sit poised at our puters, waiting expectantly for the new Blog so that we can post our ARF. As we know, some ARF's have become SRF's (Twilight, Dignity, The Sweetest Feeling, After the Gold Rush to name but a few) but we continue to look forward to the Friday morning Blog.



Then, 5.05 comes and we have our ears pressed against the radio, heart racing, thinking "will it be me", only by 5.10 to have our hopes crushed and with downcast faces we say "well, try again next week".



Being optimistic blogpoppets, we persevere every week and I have thought, ENOUGH.



So, to the idea. Simon, YOU tell US what song you would like played as the opener on Friday. We will then each request that song. You then play that song, as requested by The Blogpoppets. Its a win win. YOU get the song of your choice, WE get an ARF mention. This will, at least, give us a respite from despair for one week only and enable us to give a collective whoop whoop and resume requesting our SRF's with a happier heart. Its a win win, I say again.



Then again.........I've never heard Twilight....

Alex, it was a while ago that Kev got the ARF opener. I think he was the first blogpoppet to get one since Simon's been doing Drivetime. Paul's had one too - don't think anyone else on here has but no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong. In Chris' day I believe the opener was chosen from the blog ONLY - these days we have to compete with Twitter, text and email.



I usually use both Twitter and the blog for my song suggestions during the week, mainly because often I don't have time to get on here until mid morning, but I can send a quick tweet from my phone as soon as I know what the theme is. But for a while now I've been using the blog alone for my ARF requests. I know this lessens my chances of being chosen, but in the unlikely event that I DO get the ARF opener I want it to be a blog one!

An interesting question - at what time does a selection become too late.



I have no idea of what sort of planning timetable presenters work to given the need to build in the time for the news and features.



I can remember Simon making the odd comment when the news has run on longer than he had planned for.



I sometimes think that radio, which on the face of it feels like a looser format, actually runs more tightly than TV. Can remember complaining about late starts on BBC1 which caused me to miss the end of stuff on my TiVo box when I had it, only for the BBC to reply that the published schedules were only accurate to the nearest 5 minutes and they actually have internal schedules timed to the minute (which we the owners/users of the service aren't allowed to know!).

#63 An excellent choice Ken. Wish I'd thought of it! A very fine album too.



I have asked the question in the past about optimum time for suggesting a tune. With the number of features on a show like Drivetime, timing is key so I expect songs have to be selected to fit the slots. I have a feeling that suggestions after about 2pm don't usually get picked as by then, the running order is set. However, I am likely to be wrong!!!

I can't speak for how Simon does his planning but in Chris Evan's autobiography he shows how he planns them. He uses a spoked wheel type plan with the new travel, sport etc blocked out and so many records per hour, each wheel being an hour of the programme.



I think radio is much tighter, in terms of timings, but the plan can be changed at short notice to cope with news, travel overruns.

Thank you AG and BP - the funeral was beautiful and my dear old neighbour would have been thrilled to see so many familiar faces. She had a very strong Christian faith and the Rector knew her really well so the service was quite personal. She had requested communion too and being the tiniest Church ever we all had to squeeze past her coffin to get to the communion rail. She would have been giggling at that.



Congrats on the mensh Deebee - I think it's lovely that Simon is on first name terms with you, Honey. X



Talking about earworms - since it first pooped into my head this morning I've had Welcome Home by Peters and Lee going round and round in my brain. Aaah who cares, it's bringing back lovely memories.

Aw thank you BB, see #87 for some detail. Actually, I missed a bit out. I felt a bit of an eejit actually. Her grandson read a beautiful poem and when I caught sight of his sister mopping tears from her eyes it set me off. However, I managed to stiffen my lip and didn't embarrass myself totally. The old lady lived across the road from us and in an evening we wouldn't close our curtains 'til she had closed hers (it let me know she was getting settled for the evening), just a silly little thing but we're really missing her being there.



Rightio, no more pooping back for me. Off for a cuppa.
