Warming up for the Ing-er-land

Simon Mayo|09:24 UK time, Friday, 18 June 2010

Morning all. Today's musical accompaniment is Chris Difford's new album "Cashmere If You Can" which you can only get in weekly installments at the moment. Its a new online idea from the Squeeze man and you find out more on Tuesday's programme. Needless to say, many fine tunes on the cd which will come out eventually.

Because of the football on 5Live, just the one show today (movie wittertainment to be found tomorrow at 11). But an all request Friday ahead of an England match is going to be great fun I think. I have always loved Simon Barnes the Times' chief sports writer and today he says this:

"You don't have to believe in football to be part of the World Cup, you don't even have to like the stuff. You certainly don't have to believe that England will win it. You just have to think it would be quite nice if they did-and once that thought gets through, you're a goner."

So welcome all to the 'community of anguish'. Let's have a party and let it begin at 5.05 with something special. And that, of course, is where you come in...

ARF SUGGESTION: ONE VISION by QUEEN

I don't know how I am going to be able to contain my excitment about the England game tonight. Hold on, yes I do, there is programme I've recorded about crop rotation in the 14th century. I can put that on while glancing over to the drying out wall I've just painted.

Love the show, the host, myself, the staff, the other blogpoppets, the mods, the tweeters, the browsers, the callers, the emailers, the face bookers, the ones that don't even know the show exists (shame on you)

  • Comment number 5.

To follow on from yesterdays blog pages - I would LOVE to hear the romantic tale of 2 bloggers. Deevski, I'm sitting comfortably whenever you're ready.

Can I please request: 'Real Life' by Simple Minds

There'll be a 3 word Friday later. Pointless, but the best things in life are.

  • Comment number 6.

Good work Darren (and hallo!) - I love your indifference. I, personally, will probably head out to a pub that is NOT displaying the game.

Do you reckon by saying that, we've put people off going with our choices? :-P

  • Comment number 7.

LOL Mr Powder. Happy to share, but not on here as it's quite personal - unless MrRolastic agrees, of course.

    Deevs

  • Comment number 8.

    Morning fellow blogpoppets.

Seing as it is incredibly unlikely that I will get my first choice ARF of 'Back Home' by the 1970 England World Cup Squad, I'd better try for my second (not totally unrelated) choice of '3 Lions' - the 2010 version featuring Robbie Williams and Russell Brand.

    usual pleasantries

    Morning all!

It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming, I am coming home...well I will be at around 4pm...

Anyway, for ARF, can you please play

DEAD RINGER FOR LOVE by MEATLOAF?

    Cheers,

    Kev

  • Comment number 10.

She said it .... Russell Brand .... swoooooooooooooooooooooon!

He did record a version of When I'm 64 a couple of years ago - something to do with the Sgt Pepper aniversary, if my memory serves me well .....

.... and today is Fabio Copello's 64th birthday!

(shame it was a rubbish version - please DO NOT play it Simon!!)

Is there an echo in here - oh no it's just Kev.....

  • Comment number 12.

Sorry Kev - I wrote that, posted it and then thought - pot/kettle, I keep repeating ARF's until they get played as well.

    mtd ffb xxx

  • Comment number 13.

    Good morning All

I love that quote from Simon Barnes - kind of applies to me...!

I won't be requesting an ARF today. There's not much point, as I'll be sitting in the hairdresser's chair at around 5 o'clock and they don't have Radio 2 on (how very dare they!). Also I'm a bit disillusioned by the whole ARF opener thing - why don't they just make the first song a phone-in request like the rest of the show? I know there's the issue of it not being quite "live" but they could phone the person while the news is on.

Anyway, moan over. I wish the rest of you the best of luck. And I'll second Deevs' Queen suggestion.

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 14.

    Thanks for "second" Deebee!

I think I'm right in saying that the ARF opener is a carry-over from CLP's Drivetime days. At the time, it was just from the blog - no Twitteratti intercepted Blogland, and it did make Friday's kind of fun and exclusive to Bloggers only.

I personally don't like it as much now, mainly due to sheer volume of requests Simon must receive, and he does appear to favour Twitter over us blogpoppets.

    Morning all

I would go for another Squeeze song Cool For Cats

or another Queen suggestion Hammer To Fall

  • Comment number 16.

I really must look into this Twitter business. I'm only just getting properly into bookFace!

How is everybody today? Happy Friday everybody!!! What is everybody at over the weekend? I've got a couple of birthday parties to go to - including 1 that's a surprise. Looking forward to it - gonna have a few busy ones after this relatively quiet one.

  • Comment number 17.

    Hello to everybody,

Could have a slight football context so my suggestion

'I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down' by Elvis Costello

  • Comment number 18.

    #2 #13 I'll third Deevs' suggestion - can't beat Queen for ARF!

We didn't see anything as highbrow as Deevs' Shakespeare last night, but we did see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was wonderful and just the thing to start the weekend.

    Tortie x

  • Comment number 19.

I forgot that - how was Shakespeare? And I await with baited breath the day when I may become privy to the story of 2 blog-crossed lovers. Ding dong!

  • Comment number 20.

    Malc, in a nutshell .....

Nic and I "met" on CLP's blog. We just clicked instantly. Became friends on FB, started texting, then a phone call where neither of us could actually say much - this was in November last year. We met in person for the first time on December 16th in London and did nice christmassy stuff in the snow, then we met again on 23rd December at Chris's Bye Bye Drivetime, Hello Breakfast gig at the 02 (we were both invited by CLP along with about 30 other loyal bloggers). On the morning of Christmas Eve, we knew that was it. I was married at the time (for 14 years), but in the small hours of New Year's Day I came clean to my then other-half and was with Nic by the afternoon of New Year's Day (some 3 hours from where I was living). On the first Monday back at work in 2010 I handed in my notice, and moved in with him in February this year - and we've not looked back since.

I am still on good terms with my ex, and await the Decree Nisi in the post.

    Now ya know!

And Shakespeare was FANTASTIC!! The Director put a 1980s spin on proceedings and the play itself was very very funny - and everso slightly easier to follow than Macbeth!

  • Comment number 21.

    Morning Everyone,

My ARF OPENER - BOYS OF SUMMER - DON HENLEY.

Can you all agree on one for me to ring in with? I don't mind doing the ringing but don't want the responsibility of the choice of song.

Will have to think up something exciting I can be doing this weekend. My gorgeous boys are with their dad and I was planning on creosoting my fence tomorrow but the forecast is for light showers :( As well as a song choice can you also think up something exciting i could be doing, please?

Deevs - I knew you and Nic had met on the blog but I didn't realise it was so whirlwind. V romantic. Glad you had a good time last night too.

Happy Friday Everyone - just realised that could be my Three Word Friday!

    Gailyb

  • Comment number 22.

Deevs - thank you for sharing that. It could almost be Shakespeare in itself (or at least Coronation Street!) Best of wishes to you and Nic, and glad things are still amicable with Mister 'Ex'.

Gaily - that is a fantastic idea!! How about you request a classic like 'What a wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong, dedicated to the bloggers. And you could be going to the Moto GP at Silverstone this weekend? Ready for some hot, 2 wheeled action?

  • Comment number 23.

Or Wonderful World by Joey Ramone?!?

  • Comment number 24.

    Oh Dear!!

    I sense a bloggers revolt!

I have been amongst some revolting bloggers before, it aint pretty.

I myself have also got the repeats, nothing new there.

    So, Simon.

Please restore our faith in this lovely blog and choose one of our songs for a change.

My choice as ever is .....

    'Twilight' by ELO.

    Cheerio.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 25.

ooooh Malcolm, is that an offer? Loving the song choice so, if it's okay with the other blogpoppets, that'll be the song choice. Not so sure about the Moto GP - would be stuffed if SM asked me anything to do with motorbikes - I don't even know who the favourite is or what colour he / she wears.

I have to say I thought Nic and Deevs's story had a Richard Curtis feel to it. I'm a real sucker for Love Actually, Notting Hill, etc.

    Gailyb

  • Comment number 26.

Gaily - that'll be the snow element then!?!?

    x

  • Comment number 27.

Deevs - loving the choice of artiste. Malcolm, wee change of plan, we'll go with Deevs's selection if that's okay.

Still awaiting a suggestion for my fun-filled weekend.

    Gailyb

  • Comment number 28.

Yep Deevs - Bridget Jones / Love Actually / Notting Hill - I just love it. Gaily

  • Comment number 29.

MTF - was it something you ate?

    Gaily

  • Comment number 30.

Yesterday afternoon a colleague and I spent a fine hour discussing that supposing you were in fact the actual Bridget Jones, would you choose Daniel Cleaver (Hugh) or Mr Darcy (Colin). Much giggling ensued, along with g**gle images helping us along the way, but I think at the end of the day I'd opt for Hugh.

    x

  • Comment number 31.

I suppose, seeing as it's you GB, I can understand the change of plan.

I must admit to being a bit of a sucker for a nice chick flick myself, but don't tell everybody - I have a reputation to uphold...

And I wish that could be an offer, but I'm not going to the Moto GP myself - but I will be going to the Grand Prix.

Bevs - what do you enjoy? If you had a whole day in which to do something, what would you do? Any sports you like?

And MTF, if you haven't established by now that the bloggers are revolting, then there is something wrong...

  • Comment number 32.

I'm not going to the MotoGP this year, although I have been every year for about the last 12 years. Nowt to do with my change of location but more Dorna's change of circuit - Donington Park will take some beating, so I'll be watching the GP on the tellybox come Sunday with interest. Anyhooooo, with Rossi injured it won't be the same - his fan club are legendary!

My fave tho is Loris Capirossi.

    Deevs

    x

  • Comment number 33.

Deevs - You can have Hugh and I'll have the gorgeous Mr Firth mmmmm yum!

Malcolm - are you saying I'm indecisive or a closet punkette type person? fyi, I am both ;) I've been scratching my head thinking of what I'd like to do and have just remembered, I've agreed to help out at the running clubs race day on Sunday - I hope that's not tooooo exciting for SM to handle. Must go and check out exactly what is occurring on Sunday so I can sound all knowledgeable (that is assuming I am one of the chosen few).

    Gailyb

  • Comment number 34.

Gailyb - why not think about something that you've done recently?

Of course if you do get through you realise I'm never going to speak to you again......;-) Only joking - best of luck. Hope if you get through it's in the second hour, as I'll have more chance of hearing it.

  • Comment number 35.

Not my first visit - but Hello to all Blesspopsters!

That's a fine song choice there, MalcolmP and GailyB ... will keep my fingets crossed for you ..

Deevs and Nic - I know I know the story but it ain't 'arf romantic to hear it again. As for Outdoor Shakespeare - should be on everyone's 'bucket list' as far as I'm concerned. When I was a drama student I was fortunate enough to participate in some outdoor productions at the Ellen Terry Theatre on the Kent/Sussex border. Google it. Achingly beautiful setting.

    O-er I've gone all nostalgic.

I also have a really good feeling about today - there must be something in the air.

  • Comment number 36.

    #35 fingets?/!

  • Comment number 37.

lol Katy - can't beat a good crossed finget! x

  • Comment number 38.

I am sorry for making any such implication Gaily! I think any kind of voluntary activity is always worth a mensh, so I look forward to hearing that (as well as a choon for the blogpopsters). I've got everything crossed that you get through!

Deevs - I admire your commitment for going to the Moto GP. I'm not that into motorbikes myself, but sometimes find myself watching it if there's little on/crummy weather. I quite enjoy my F1, and watch that sometimes, and will be at Silverstone marshalling the British Grand Prix. Should be good fun. Also, I'll be at the Festival of Speed at Goodwood the weekend before. I'm hopefully going to try and ring the show from one of those locations to request a tune (even though I won't be able to hear it). Fingers crossed...

  • Comment number 39.

Katy, I keep my fingets crossed all the time. ;)

  • Comment number 40.

    Did you mean fingets Malcolm?

  • Comment number 41.

Well done Katy - didn't see your post as I was too busy rambling on myself, but keep your fingets crossed! Almost sounds painful

  • Comment number 42.

Is that a cross between a finger and a digit then?

  • Comment number 43.

May I say in a total aside, as a relatively recent regular blogger (though I have made the odd rant before, and been fortunate enough to have a blog request chosen by the great SM), I couldn't have been made to feel more welcome, and I really look forward to hearing from all the fellow bloggers every day. I hope to meet up with you all soon, but then I may be forced to reveal my real name...

Today feels so good - maybe because of the promise of good weather over the weekend, but I can't smile enough today. This without even a lady to look forward to spending time with! Crazy.

  • Comment number 48.

#43 You are very welcome Malcolm. But I'm curious to know why you don't want to reveal your real name. Are you someone famous, by any chance?

  • Comment number 49.

#48 I was wondering about that too!

  • Comment number 50.

Loving the malapropisms (I think that's what they are anyway). My brother-in-law, on a coach from Edin to London, came out with 'dramastic' when describing something particularly exciting to his (previously unknown) fellow passenger. It's now in our family's dictionary.

Aw bless you Malcolm - life can be a bit rotten without someone special to share it with. I had a particularly dramastic evening a couple of weeks ago with my new neighbour - my goodness he was like a blimmin' octopus. Anyhoo, it made me realise that after 4 years of being single I really do miss the odd 'man hug' (and that is just a hug from a lovely man, nothing else, honest, well it could be if it was Mr (W)Right).

    Gailyb

  • Comment number 51.

Has Bevs got something for ol' 2 o'clock Steve I wonder...

I don't mind revealing my real name, but since I told a couple of friends about my pseudonym when I started writing into Terry, it's become kind of a nickname. I could say I am a local celebrity, a north-Hampshire George Clooney, but I would be lying.

And Bevs - I know exactly what you mean - except substitute the 'man hug' for 'woman hug'

  • Comment number 52.

man hug/ women hug - everyone likes a hug

Now I'm the first to admit that I don't do cuddles and kisses but even I liked a well timed hug from a friend (and the husband of course)

Baggy - who loves to be incognito on the blogs!

  • Comment number 53.

Not aware of having anything for ol' 2 o'clock Steve - if I do it's entirely incidental.

Funny that Malcolm, I always think of myself as a Scottish Meryl Streep but it's all kidology. I hope you get some hugs soon - I'll send you some virtual hugs to keep you going {{}}.

  • Comment number 59.

    Malcolm, what Sonya Shoe?

  • Comment number 60.

Believe me - you do NOT want to know...

  • Comment number 61.

No I really mean it what's Sonya Shoe? (soz, I should have typed 'what's' the first time). Gaily

  • Comment number 62.

She was another contributor to Terry's show. I assume it's a pseudonym. Like Helen Bach, Elfin Safety or indeed Malcolm Powder.

    MP

  • Comment number 63.

Oooooo I've gotcha Malcolm - when you typed TW before I wasn't thinking of the Tog Meister, I was thinking of Tomorrow's World for some very obscure reason. (I'm sitting here blushing and shaking my head at my stupidity.) The best pseudonym I could come up with was Arfur Evans-Ake or, as suggested by one of my gorgeous boys, Ida de Trompe, both of which went unused for obvious reasons.

I must get back to the grindstone - I have an 'external' letter to type up. My boss always asks me to type an 'external' letter - what's that all about?

    Gailyb

  • Comment number 64.

Gaily - sorry, I should have clarified. Most friends of mine know I'm talking about the Togmeister, simply because I'm talking! I need to remember my manners - sincerest apologies.

The external letter is a bit like the 'internal message' I get every now and then, which to be frank sounds like a bowel movement. Anyway, best of luck and happy Friday!
