Sun, movies, bikes and requests for ELO etc

Simon Mayo|09:27 UK time, Friday, 21 May 2010

Well I did say it would turn out half decent and this looks like a lovely weekend coming up. Which is just as well as yesterday I sat through the horrible spectacle of a film called The Killer Inside Me which was just vile. Yesterday's programme was a wonderful sun-filled antidote and we'll continue that tonight. Looking forward to 5pm already! Your participation is requested - leave that dashboard-tapping classic in the receptacle provided.

And this will be too late now but remember what those chromosomes are made from! It's GCSE Biology today. I hope we helped.

But first the small business of the movie show with Mark over on 5Live. More Robin Hood business to sort and director Philip Ridley on his new horror film Heartless. Then one dons the leathers for that bike trip to R2 central...

Katy, I missed your theory, but will endeavour to go back and read it.

Gaily, what a lovely thing to say.

I am not sure I would enhance anyones chances of getting their ARF though.

    I've C&P'd in full -

"Sorry m'dear - belated Happy Birthday MTF!

It's amazing what you miss when 3 days away from t'internet

OK - forever the researcher - I've been having a closer look at the ARF or Opening Track phenomenomemumena esp. relating to your long-running request for ELO - Twilight.

ELO tracks 'seem' to be well represented across the shows on R2 or perhaps that's just my perception - I always think Rod Stewart is played a lot [both artistes a safe bet, universally popular, fit the demograph, blah de blah etc etc].

Of all the ELO singles, around 22 of them were Top 20, 15 of them Top 10.

'Twilight' maxed at No 30 and was only in the charts for 7 weeks.

Perhaps the track itself is just not 'popular' enough? Whereas the band are, and indeed you are :)

Request methodology probably doesn't even come into it.

Anyway, don't mind me - just having one of my Saturday morning rambles .... "

  • Comment number 24.

#21 mtd I would go along with 3 lions havent herd the new version yet its got to be that one on fri 11th June for sure

  • Comment number 25.

    Katy

Thank you for the requote, as I couldn't remember your theory either ;)

I think you do have a point (sorry MTF), as was discussed yesterday, R2 does tend to play a few tracks or one track from an artist or band, usually the hits rather than the morr obscure, although possibly better tracks.

Still you never know we could all be proved wrong, and Tull may be the ARF starter ;) (Joking Tortie!)

I am expecting to let out a very loud DOH! as usual at 5.05, but hasten to add, that I am always delighted and let out a 'whoop whoop', when one of us bloggers gets it.

Good ARFternoon Each! This from Spike...

'As I'll be out again all day could someone kindly post my usual ARF of SWITCHBOARD SUSAN by ROCKPILE.'

My sage advice, however, would be to totally ignore that, and instead can we have a bit of The Ramones, with...

    'Blitzkrieg Bop'.

  • Comment number 28.

    Good Afternoon All

MTF - when I saw the title of today's blog I thought Simon might have been addressing you personally ;-)

I'm taking my son to a Queen tribute band tonight, so how about a bit of BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY to start the show?

  • Comment number 29.

Hi Deebee, I did wonder if he had been reading my late night/early morning plea!

You off out on the water this weekend?

  • Comment number 31.

#29 no - the hubster's going, MTF but I've got stuff to do at home as we're off on holiday next weekend (yippee!!)

  • Comment number 32.

    MAGIC TRICK.

Follow these instructions VERY CAREFULLY. A certain Mr Simon Mayo originally broadcast this on a different station, at a different time.

    Here we go.

Think of a number. This can be absolutely any number, but you are going to have to do some mental arithmetic with it, or use a calculator, so bear this in mind.

    Double that number.

Add 18 to the new number.

    Take away 9.

Take away the number you first thought of.

    Add 6.

Take away the number you first thought of again.

Now add together the individual figures of the number you now have.(For example. if you have 97, 9+7=16. if you have 66, then 6+6=12, etc)

Now subtract 2 from the new number.

It gets a little complicated now. We have to get you down to a single figure below 27, for reasons that will become obvious.

You may already have a single figure, so this bit will not include you. However, if you have a duoble digit figure ABOVE 27, or even a triple or more digit figure, then we must repeat a similar process to above, adding the individual components together. Eg 123 would be 1+2+3=6, and this figure would do. 9999 wolud be 9+9+9+9=36. tIn this case you would then add 3+6 to equal 9. Just follow this process until you reach either a single figure. or a double figure below 27. Got that?

Right then, I know want you to swap the number you now have with the corresponding letter of the alphabet. This is why we had to end up with a number below 27, you see. So. letter A would be 1, letter B would be 2. and so on.

Now think of a country that begins with the letter you now have.

Take the second letter of that country, and think of an animal that begins with that letter, AND the colour that animal would normally be.

Mow go and have a look at #257 on this blogs archive, from Wednesday 28th January. (WahWah Wednesday.)

  • Comment number 33.

    Afternoon All,

Well Deevs may have suggested james but I'm not about to reciprocate with The Beatles (Too much of them and other 60's and 70's stuff for my liking, though Chris Tarrant did play High and Dry by Radiohead yesterday, so good on yer Chris!!)

My choice is James - Waterfall, because it says how we probably all feel about things sometimes and reminds me of being in India on a really hot day and plunging in to a pool, fed by a waterfall and it was lovely and freezing!

    Happy Friday!

    Nic

Anyway - JAMES talk. Yesterday I cheered myself with a James greatest hits sesh - silly dancing an all - I'd forgotten what a cracking single WALTZING ALONG was/is. Upbeat lyrics. I played it about 7 times. I shall request it forthwith.
