Keep cool and carry on

Simon Mayo|08:40 UK time, Monday, 24 May 2010

Well let's try but that might be pushing it when it's going to be hotter here than son1 is experiencing in the heart of Africa. A few changes of clothing packed, and we're off...

Hope your weekend was a good one. Mrs M. and I went to see Natalie Merchant at the Hammersmith Apollo. It turned out to be part gig, part lecture as she showed slides of assorted Victorian writers whose childrens' stories and poems had inspired her new album "Leave Your Sleep". She has a great voice and some of the new songs are terrific but with only a 3 piece (and usually 2 piece) band she struggled to bring enough variety into the set. And isn't 2 hours 30 mins always too long for a gig? The devoted would happily have stayed till breakfast but the rest of us were merely tired and sleepy. Moshing was not on the agenda.

Enough. Today.... Well Simon Callow will be on after 6. He's got another one man show , this time about Shakespeare. He's always great company and looking forward to talking to him again.

And music? BBC1 is awash with flowers again for the Chelsea flower show (if you can be awash with flowers) so let's think blooms and all assorted paraphernalia . Over to you petal...

and Paul, I think you'll find CDF had taken up the chapeau of shame in Tweeting the floral dance!

    Afternoon All

My suggestions for flower songs, which I tweeted earlier are:

"Flowers in the window" by Travis (good choice there, psl!)

    "Lilac Wine" by Elkie Brookes

#17 I would actually love to hear the Jeff Beck/Imelda May version. I bought the album after hearing Jeff Beck on Drivetime, and I have to say it's brilliant. I've been listening to it a lot this weekend. Strange really - it's not the type of music I normally go for, more Mr Bee's kind of thing.

Sorry I couldn't be here earlier by the way. Actually, I could have been on first - I had a brief look at about 10 o'clock to see what the theme was, but didn't have time to post anything as it's been a bit manic at work today. Just about managed to tweet my suggestions while I was waiting for the photocopier to do two copies of 91 job applications. Did I mention that I'm going on holiday on Saturday.....

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 24.

#22 Yes. I noticed that he had done it on here as well, but in all fairness to CDF, he is one of the few that could have a legitimate reason for asking for that song. He is, after all, Kerackers.

  • Comment number 25.

So why you picking on me, Paul? Is it cos I is from Nottingham?

  • Comment number 26.

    #23 - going anywhere nice?

For info, I probably won't be a round for a couple of weeks from Wednesday. I am taking time off work whilst my wife sorts out her London residence (the last tenant moves out on Wednesday so I will be on fetching / carrying / childminder, etc. until 14th June...the upside is I may be able to find time to call R2 on ARF...

  • Comment number 27.

right, back into meetings I go - see you later!

  • Comment number 28.

#26 Turkey. And good luck with the call - I was thinking the other day that none of us blogpoppets had ever been on, although I think MTD tried when she was stuck in some far flung place. Make sure you give us all a mensh if you get through. By names, obviously....

  • Comment number 29.

2 hrs 30 too long for a gig? I've been to gigs where 2hrs 30 wasn't long enough! Pretty sure the Yes symphonic tour was over that on the nights when they played Gates of Delirium and every minute was majestic.

The Cure's Disintegration tour last night at Wembley Arena must have gone on for 3 hours or even more with all the encores. I can't be sure of the exact length as me and my brother had to leave before the end as our lift had been outside waiting for more than an hour! (My car had packed up as we were about to head to Wembley). However long it was, it flew by.

Probably Simon's right though. For the last few years I've been more than happy with a 90 minute set by the headliner. Maybe Richie Blackmore was right the night he refused to come back on stage after 70 minutes and Rainbow fans ripped out seats in protest. Apparently 70 minutes was within the terms of the contract, although it seems a little tight-fisted to me.

#25.Ah, Nottingham. Nottingham, Nottingham, Nottingham. A city that has fond memories for me. Particularly, 23rd February 2009, 4th February 2009, 30th October 1971. I could go on, but the point is I don't need to pick on you, Kev, I have some black and white clad friends to do that. Perhaps, when you return to your old stomping ground, one day, we might meet up and have a pint or two. How do you feel about Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem. (But don't touch the boat, eh?)

  • Comment number 31.

I'm just going to tip toe back out again before anyone notices I've been lurking - it's all very highbrow, musically speaking, on this here blog.

*closes the door v quietly before sighing heavily*

Gailyb - who didn't drop by

  • Comment number 32.

#31 Come back Gailyb - we're not all highbrow... you're very welcome to lower the tone. Saves me having to!

  • Comment number 33.

*popping head round door, gingerly* aw thanks Deebee. I'll be back but can't stay at the mo, it's home time for me and that's when the stresses really begin fitting in school runs, after school activities and general domestic engineering.

I'm very good at lowering the tone, I've been complimented on my ability to attain new levels of tone lowering.

    Have a fabby afternoon everyone.

    Toodle-oo for noo.

Btw, MCW - have you deserted t'other side? Haven't seen you at CLP's gaffe for a while. x

  • Comment number 34.

    Afternoon,

There are some very good suggestions above, especially Let It Grow suggested by Paul. Maybe for a runner up though:-

SAN FRANCISCO (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair) by Scott McKenzie

and just to lower the tone somewhat....

    ROSIE by Don Partridge

    Have a nice day y'all,

    Dave

I saw Natalie Merchant too! I was one of the devoted: during the requests bit I was rather hoping someone would hand her the phone book to sing, as I could gladly listen all night. I thought she was wonderful: the voice of a miracle. The 10,000 Maniacs song "Eden" has a reference to flowers, as does "Stockton Gala Days". Or maybe you could just play "Life is Sweet", which has no flowers but is beautiful anyway?

  • Comment number 36.

Cant believe it no one has suggested Paper Roses - Marie Osmond

  • Comment number 37.

    #36 aka paper woses!

  • Comment number 38.

Thanks Simon- can't beat a bit of Tears for Fears! No mensh but I don't mind. x

  • Comment number 39.

How about 'Flowers In Our Hair' by All About Eve. They also did an excellent cover of 'The Garden of Jane Delawney' by Trees.

I thought that in every job there is to be done there is an element of fun, you find the fun and SNAP the job's a game... cue birds singing on the windowsill and toys hopping round the room.

BTW, I've just texted Simon an idea that the 3 word descriptions of the day should be called a "THREET". Waddaya think?

Also BTW, thanks Simon for the Mensh just before 18:00.

Love the show, the host, myself, the staff, the other blogpoppets, the mods, the tweeters, the browsers, the callers, the emailers, the face bookers, the ones that don't even know the show exists (shame on you)

    Hi All,

Been out and about today so no chance to post, but have read all the suggestions are there are some very fine ones, heard most of the show in the car and enjoyed.
