 | What's Leek Soup all about?
Leek still has its butter market, stock market, and surrounding small farms. The farming and food connection is strong within and around the town itself. There’s also a growing number of coffee-shops and ethnic restaurants. Through food, Leek is connected to the world beyond the moorlands.
Throughout the spring of 2003, I worked with Primary School children, using food as a central theme, from which we created short pieces of writing together. I also scribed conversations with people in and around the town, again, with a food connection. These I gave back as short pieces of writing, all in people’s own words, some of them in two languages, reflecting the diversity of the town. The aim was to let people in on aspects of everyday life, which are often taken for granted. We also had a lot of fun!
The result was a series of posters containing word-sketches of everyday reality, seen from a close, personal perspective. The posters then became a street-wide exhibition around the town, as part of Leek Arts Festival. Artwork for the posters came from a student at Westwood High School.
BBC Radio Stoke transmitted some of the work. Leek Post and the Evening Sentinel newspapers featured some of the writing. During the final week of the Festival there was a live outdoor performance on market day, with music from Los Angelos, adults from Centre Stage, and children from the schools reading the words.
Finally, the words went out on local buses.
Altogether, around two hundred children and adults took part in the making process, and many more were involved in preparing, performing, and presenting back the work to the town.
