Leek Soup
When's Dinner by Alex Ridden and Helena Nicol
I asked myself,
As I gazed out of the window
And licked my dry mouth.

When’s dinner?
I really would like to know,
What will I have,
And where will I go?

When’s dinner?
Chip butties and gravy,
Yoghurt, or fruit.
Please, Miss Dinner Lady –

When’s dinner?
Food’s flying in the air.
What’s happened to this lesson?
There’s food everywhere…

When’s dinner?
I am now desperate for dessert –
But I’m on a diet
So I can buy that new shirt.

When’s dinner?
The hours are dragging by.
Am I in History, or Maths –
No? Where on earth am I?

When’s dinner?
I can’t cope any more.
All the cooks are busy,
I can smell it through the door.

When’s dinner?
I only have one wish,
And that is the vision
Of food, on my dish.

When’s dinner?
‘Please Sir, I don’t understand…’
Oh, that silly boy wasn’t listening -
‘Put down your hand!’

When’s dinner?
I phoned my Mum
To come and collect me
And fill up my tum,

But she told me
That she couldn’t
Look after someone
As respected
As me – the Headmaster!
