Leek Soup
Young and Hungry by Wayne
They call me the Monster
Or the Beast,
Because I like the breaks,
And the cakes!
I’ll have:
Two steak slices,
One vanilla slice,a chocolate chip cookie
Sometimes two cartons
Of Ribena,
Or just a bottle of Coke.
So I’m a nice beast!

It’s dead nice, looking round here,
As I stand behind the counter
With all the cakes.
From the customer’s point of view
It’s probably not as good –
There’s glass between them
And the cakes…
But I can see them all.
They look a lot more tempting
From this side.

(He gets here on a Saturday,
ten o-clock.
One minute past, he’s planning
What he’ll have for his dinner.
It’ll catch up with him, in later life.)

At the end of the day
I wrap everything away
It’s something of a skill.
In the morning, people complain –
They can’t get to the cakes,
I’ve wrapped them so well.
It’s the mark – of the beast!

Wayne, student waiter in the coffee shop
