| Saturday, 4 January, 2003, 17:47 GMT Mansaram rescues Mariners ![]() Grimsby 2-2 Burnley A superb late equaliser from Grimsby's Darren Mansaram earned his battling side an FA Cup third round replay at Burnley. Alan Moore and Paul Weller gave the visitors the lead going into the interval, but Terry Cooke pulled one back from the penalty spot before Mansaram's 87th minute leveller. Moore struck just before the quarter-hour mark from a dead-ball situation after he was fouled by George Santos.
Dimitrios Papadopoulos' resulting free-kick could only be parried into the path of Moore by keeper Danny Coyne and the Burnley striker coolly swept home his first goal of the season. Four minutes later Moore turned provider when he floated over a cross for Weller, who made no mistake with a crisp left-footed strike into the bottom corner.
But the Clarets suffered a major blow when Weller hobbled off. He was replaced by Paul Cook while Santos had to go off injured to signal the arrival of Steve Chettle. Ian Cox's rash challenge on Stuart Campbell gave Grimsby a penalty and Cooke converted to give the home side hope. The Clarets' inability to hold on to a lead away from home was clearly weighing on their mind. Cooke forced Burnley keeper Marlon Beresford into some important saves before Mansaram silenced the away fans with a brilliant solo goal. The 18-year-old striker waltzed past three static Grimsby defenders before unleashing a wonderful 25-yard drive to rescue his side a replay at Turf Moor. Grimsby: Coyne, McDermott (Rowan 85), Ford, Santos (Chettle 54), Gallimore, Cooke, Coldicott, Groves, Campbell, Mansaram, Soames (Thompson 75). Burnley: Beresford, McGregor, Cox, Gnohere, Branch, Ian Moore, Weller (Cook 37), Grant, Alan Moore, Papadopoulos (Armstrong 90), Blake. Att: 5,350 Referee: G Laws (Tyne & Wear). |
