| Monday, 17 February, 2003, 10:54 GMT Fifa blocks video replays ![]() Black's shot crosses the line but the goal is not given Premier League referees' chief Phillip Don has stepped into the row over video technology after Crystal Palace's controversial disallowed FA Cup "goal". Crystal Palace boss Trevor Francis was furious when Tommy Black's strike in the FA Cup fifth round tie against Leeds United was ruled out. It would have given Palace a 2-1 lead - but Leeds went on to grab a second-half winner and grab a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup fifth round tie. Referee Dermot Gallagher and his assistants waved away Palace's protests - but television evidence proved the ball was well behind the line. It has led to renewed calls for video cameras to be introduced - but Premier League referees officer Don insists Fifa would block any moves.
He said: "You would have to have the same system in every single ground and it would have to be 100% fool proof. "That is where the research and development is taking place, to design a system that would assist. "I've spoken about this for about the last three years, and it is one of the few occasions where technology can be used because it is not an opinion, it is a factual decision." Don added: "The problem is that Fifa has said you can't use cameras because you will always have a situation where you wouldn't be 100% certain, for instance if you have got two or three bodies on the line, whether the ball has crossed the line. "No camera, wherever it is in that goal, would be able to detect that." |
