| Saturday, 4 January, 2003, 18:21 GMT Cherries hold Crewe ![]() Bournemouth 0-0 Crewe A last-gasp save from Crewe goalkeeper Clayton Ince earned his side an FA Cup replay as they were they held to goalless draw by Bournemouth. Trinidad international Ince pushed away a goalbound shot from the edge of the area from winger Wade Elliott to disappoint Bournemouth's best crowd of the season. It was also a good day for Ince's opposite number, Chris Tardif, who saved his side on several occasions.
Tardif saved from John Miles and David Vaughan but reserved his best for the 69th minute to turn an inswinging corner from Kenny Lunt onto the bar. This was the nearest injury-hit Crewe - who were without Rob Hulse, Dean Ashton and Rodney Jack - came to scoring. Division Two side Bournemouth should have been comfortably ahead by the interval. But Elliott shot across the face of the goal with only Ince to beat and Steve Fletcher volleyed out of the ground from 12 yards when unmarked. Neither manager was pleased with the result, meaning an extra match for both clubs at a critical time in the season.
"I am happy to be in the hat for the fourth round draw, particularly as it looked as if we might lose," said Crewe boss Dario Gradi. "We don't want another epic cup run. It cost us relegation last year and I do not want these extra matches costing us promotion this season." Gradi's sentiments were echoed by Bournemouth boss Sean O'Driscoll whose squad has been reduced by injuries to only 18 fit players. "I am happy with the performance and we had enough chances to win but I am less pleased with the result," said O'Driscoll. "I would rather we had got it out of the way at the first attempt, but we can take confidence from the way we played against a team in a division higher than ourselves and doing well in their league." Bournemouth: Tardif, Young (Narada 90), Tindall, Carl Fletcher, John Purches, Elliott, Browning, O'Connor, Thomas, Steve Fletcher (Feeney 75), Hayter (Holmes 90). Crewe: Ince, Wright, Foster, Walton, Tierney (Sodje 90), Lunt (Rix 89), Brammer, Sorvel, Vaughan, Jones, Miles (Bell 89). Booked: Wright. Att: 7,252 Referee: P Walton (Northamptonshire). |
