Tour de France stage 16
map of the stage
Wednesday 19 July, 182km, Bourg d'Oisans to La Toussuire

Stage 16 profile
The stage incorporates one of the most infamous ascents in Tour history - the Col du Galibier - earlier in the day, one of the rare hors category climbs on this year's agenda.

Your Tour experiences and comments
I climbed the col du galibier in mid June, and it was so cold at the top, the moisture in the air was crystallising! the heat generated in the effort of the climb, was quickly dispersed on the descent, and I was soon shaking uncontrollably. You have to admire the tour riders for their ability to contend with such extremes in a race situation.
stephen hammond, dewsbury, west yorkshire

Its ten years since i did the col du telegraph and galibier on the same day prior to a fast exhilerating descent into Grenoble. I will never forgot that day, or that tour; the mighty Indurain finally broke and i had a fantastic holiday with the legendary Manchester University Cycling Team (MURT). Fat and married with a young daughter now, how times change...
andrew mcqueen, coventry

the galibier is the climb of the tour, punishing all the way to the summit, over the top and look out for speeds approaching 75mph - one to watch!
jonathan, edinburgh

I rode up the Col de Galibier, it was summer at the bottom of the valley and a winter blizzard at the top. I take my hat off to the tour riders. I cannot ride up a mole hill these days.
Mike C, Durham

We ski in Valloire most years & is just down the mountain from the Col du Galibier, we are amazed at the speeds the riders get up to considering the state of the road with all its pot holes & dis-repair through there. You must take your hat off for their courage.
David Marsh, Dunmow, Essex

We have been going skiing at La Toussuire for the last three years and the opportunity of "Le Tour" finishing Stage 16 there is too good to miss. Thoroughly looking forward to being there on 19th July when it rolls in! The climb to La Toussuire should be a fitting climax to what could be an epic day in this years race. Hoping for a clear sunny day with the famous Aiguilles D'Arves' looking down on the finish!
Kenneth McFarlane, Edinburgh

Look out for the Fireflies on the final bends of the ascent!!! ALLEZ.
