Debut at the BBC Proms

The BBC Scottish Orchestra made its first appearance at the BBC Proms on 20 August 1962, in a programme that included the World Premiere of Thea Musgrave’s The Phoenix and the Turtle and Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony. The conductor was Norman Del Mar (principal conductor from 1960-1965).

The BBC SSO has performed 36 works by the Scottish composer Thea Musgrave since 1955 and will perform her work 'Aurora' in Glasgow on 12 March 2026.
