เริ่มฟังกันก่อนและไม่ต้องกังวลหากไม่เข้าใจนะคะ เดี๋ยวเราจะมาอธิบายรายละเอียดกัน
ฟังครั้งแรก พยายามจับใจความให้ได้ว่า เขาสั่งอาหารอะไร กี่คอร์สนะคะ มีคำศัพท์ตัวช่วยด้วยนะคะ soup คนไทยรู้จักกันดีอยู่แล้ว fish ปลา vegetables ผัก chocolate cake เค้กช็อกโกแลต และ water น้ำ

Are you ready to order?

Diner
Yes! To start, I’ll have the soup, please. For main, I’ll have the fish with vegetables. And for dessert, I’ll have the chocolate cake, please.

Waiter
Of course. Anything to drink?

Diner
To drink, I’ll have water, please.

ฟังทันไหมคะ เขาสั่งอาหารสามคอร์สค่ะ So, Sam, shall we look at the language we can use to order in a restaurant?

Sam
Absolutely!

Clare
คำถามแรกที่พนักงานถามก็คือ: ‘Are you ready to order?’

Sam
There are only two ways to answer this question: ‘yes’ or ‘no’! In our conversation, the answer was ‘yes’.

ฟังอีกทีว่าเขาสั่งอะไร และสังเกตว่าเขาสั่งอาหารสามคอร์สอย่างไรด้วยค่ะ เพราะมีคำหนึ่งที่แตกต่างออกไป

Insert
Yes! To start, I’ll have the soup, please. For main, I’ll have the fish with vegetables. And for dessert, I’ll have the chocolate cake, please.

สังเกตคำที่แตกต่างออกไหมคะ เราได้ยินเขาพูดถึงอาหารสามคอร์สว่า:
‘to start’ เริ่มด้วย
‘for main’ สำหรับจากหลัก และ
‘for dessert’ สำหรับของหวาน

ที่ต่างกันก็คือ ‘to start’ ค่ะ ซึ่งเป็นการกระทำ ส่วนที่เหลือ ‘main’ กับ ‘dessert’ เป็นคำนามซึ่งเราใช้ ‘for’ นำหน้าแทน ‘to’ นะคะ

And then you say what you want – do you remember how?

ค่ะ ‘I’ll have…’ แปลว่า ฉันจะซึ่งในกรณีนี้ เราใช้ I’ll กับคำกริยา have เพื่อพูดถึงสิ่งที่เราตัดสินใจเลือก ณ ขณะนั้นนะคะ

Sam
Yes, decisions in a restaurant are usually quite quick. And after ‘I’ll have…’ you say the food or drink you want.

และสังเกตว่า เรามักใช้ ‘the’ ก่อนหน้าชื่ออาหาร เพราะเรากำลังพูดถึงอาหารจานใดจานหนึ่งในเมนูโดยเฉพาะ ฟังและฝึกพูดตามแซมเลยค่ะ

Sam
Repeat after me:
To start, I’ll have the soup, please.

For main, I’ll have the fish with vegetables.

And for dessert, I’ll have the chocolate cake, please.

ต่อไป พนักงานอาจถามว่าจะรับเครื่องดื่มอะไรดี โดยใช้ประโยค:
‘Anything to drink?’

Sam
Yes – this is short for ‘would you like anything to drink? And how do you answer it, do you remember? Let’s listen again:

Insert
To drink, I’ll have water, please.

Clare
เราใช้ ‘to drink’ เหมือนกับ ‘to start’ ค่ะ เพราะเป็นการกระทำ แล้วตามด้วย I’ll นะคะ

Sam
Great! Now you’ve learned what to say in a restaurant, it’s time for you to practise.

ให้ฝึกสั่งคอร์สแรกกันเลยค่ะ อย่าลืมว่าเราไม่ใช้ ‘for’ ในที่นี้นะคะ
และอย่าลืมพูดอย่างสุภาพด้วยนะคะ จากนั้นเปรียบเทียบคำตอบกับเสียงแซมค่ะ

ต่อไป หากต้องการสั่งปลา ต้องพูดอย่างไรคะ

Sam
For main, I’ll have the fish.

Clare
พูดเหมือนกันหรือเปล่าคะ
และสุดท้าย พนักงานจะถามว่า ดื่มอะไรไหม ให้ตอบว่าขอน้ำเปล่านะคะ
จากนั้นเปรียบเทียบคำตอบกับเสียงแซมค่ะ
