ਅੱਜ ਆਪਾਂ ਸਿੱਖਾਂਗੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੱਸੀਏ। ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਛੋਟਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਵੱਡਾ?

ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਦੋ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਭੈਣਾ ਹਨ।ਠੀਕ ਹੈ ਇੰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਧਿਆਨ ਦੇਣਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੈਂਬਾਰਂ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਆਹੇ ਹੋਣ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਨਹੀਂ, ਇਹ ਵੀ ਸਮਝਣਾ।

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ, ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਵਿਆਹੇ ਹਨ ਜਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ, ਇਸ ਵੱਲ ਕੁਝ ਇਸ਼ਾਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਚਲੋ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

I'm married and I live with my partner.

Did you get that? They are married, they said that they live with their 'partner' which can mean 'husband' or 'wife' and we can also talk about partners who are not married.

ਇੱਕ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ 'divorced' ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ।

My parents live together, but my mother-in-law and my father-in-law are divorced.

So, he said that their father-in-law and mother-in-law are divorced. Can you explain what –in-law means?

ਹਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ'in-law' ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਸਹੁਰਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ 'father-in-law' ਅਤੇ 'mother-in-law'.

We can use this with any family relationship – we also have ‘son-in-law’ and ‘daughter-in-law’. 

Notice the pronunciation – when the relationship word ends in a consonant, it joins to the 'in' in 'in-law'. Listen and repeat after me:

ਸ਼ੁਕਰੀਆ, ਚਲੋ ਅੱਗੇ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭੈਣਾ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੀ ਦੱਸਿਆ? 

I have a brother and a sister. My brother is single and my sister is separated.

We heard that his brother is single – he's not married or in a relationship, and he doesn't have a partner. We also heard that his sister is separated. What does that mean?

'Separated' ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੋਇਆ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਅਲੱਗ ਰਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਅਕਸਰ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ 'divorced' ਲੋਕਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਉਸਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਅਲੱਗ ਰਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ।

ਇਸ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਦੋ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੁਣਿਆ'divorced' ਯਾਨੀ ਕਿ ਤਲਾਕਸ਼ੁਦਾ ਅਤੇ 'stepson' ਮਤਲਬ ਮਤਰੇਆ ਪੁੱਤਰ। ਫ਼ਿਲ 'step' ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

A stepson or stepdaughter is your partner's child from a previous relationship. Your stepfather or stepmother is your mother or father's new partner. Your stepbrother or stepsister are your stepmother or stepfather's children.
