ਅੱਜ ਆਪਾਂ ਸਿੱਖਾਂਗੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ sorry ਕਦੋਂ, ਕਿਉਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਇਹ ਤਿੰਨ ਵਾਕ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਇੰਨਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁਝ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਇਸਤੇਮਾਲ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ 'miss the bus' ਮਤਲਬ ਬੱਸ ਛੁੱਟ ਗਈ ਹੈ,  'delay' ਯਾਨੀ ਕੁਝ ਦੇਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ ਅਤੇ  'delivery' ਮਤਲਬ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਕੋਈ ਸਮਾਨ ਕਿਸੇ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਉਣਾ।

ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਦੱਸ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ ਇੰਨਾਂ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਵਿਵਹਾਰਕ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਸੀ। ਹਾਂ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਇਹ ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਵਾਕ ਸੀ। ਚਲੋ ਆਪਾਂ ਸੈਮ ਨਾਲ ਇੰਨਾਂ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਤੀ ਗਈ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

So the most common way to say 'sorry' is just to say 'I'm sorry' – and to make it stronger you can add an adverb like 'so', 'very' or 'really'. But it's important that you use your intonation to show that you mean it. Let's practise that quickly. Repeat after me: 

I'm so sorry.

I'm really sorry. 

And you can also say what you are sorry for. For example, 'I'm sorry I'm late' or 'I'm sorry I shouted at you.'

ਅਕਸਰ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿਉਂ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ

'I missed the bus' ਅਤੇ ਲੇਟ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।

Exactly, or you can say 'I'm sorry I'm late. The traffic was really bad this morning'.

ਹਾਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਟ੍ਰੈਫ਼ਿਕ ਦਾ ਸੱਚੀਂ ਬੁਰਾ ਹਾਲ ਸੀ। ਚਲੋਆਪਾਂ ਅਗਲਾ ਵਾਕ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਗੁਆਉਣ ਲਈ ਮੁਆਫ਼ ਕਰਨਾ। ਉਸਨੇ 'sorry' ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਲਗਾਇਆ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਵੀ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

So he uses the preposition 'for' followed by the verb in the '-ing' form. So we use 'for' when we want to give a reason for being sorry. For example you could say 'I'm sorry for being late'. You could also use a noun after 'for' – like 'I'm sorry for the mess'.  Here, you can also use the preposition 'about' – 'I'm sorry about the mess'.

I'm sorry for losing your book.

I'm sorry for the mess.

I'm sorry about the mess.

ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਲਈ ਸ਼ਰਮਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, 'I'm sorry about the mess'. ਇੰਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਨੇ 'sorry' ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਇਸਤੇਮਾਲ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਹ ਕੀ ਸੀ।

So she used the verb 'I apologise' which is a more formal way to say 'I'm sorry'. We often use 'apologise' with people we don't know or in written English and it's normally followed by the preposition 'for' and the reason why you’re sorry. Let's practise the pronunciation. Repeat after me:

ਚਲੋ ਕੁਝ ਪ੍ਰੈਕਟਿਸ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੋਸਤ ਨਾਲ ਕੌਫ਼ੀ ਪੀਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਲੇਟ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹੋ। ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਆਫ਼ੀ ਮੰਗੋ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੇਟ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਣ ਵੀ ਦੱਸਣਾ ਕਿ 'ਮੈਂ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸੌਂ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ', 'I overslept'
ਹਰ ਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਚੈੱਕ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੈਮ ਦਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੁਣ ਲੈਣਾ।
