Are you sitting comfortably?
Grim old train journey this. Dark clouds, huddled travellers. However, heading for the bright lights of Winchester with a song in my heart and a bacon roll in my stomach. My relentless cheerfulness will get them in the end.
A weekend when I finally pressed 'send' on book 2 and of hoping it doesn't come back with a 'see me' attached. I also had to write the acknowledgements in double quick time and I'm now hoping I haven't forgotten anyone. Then it's the dedication. Much angst. The last book was dedicated to child3 so should I do child 2? Child 1? All 3? Maybe wife1. Or Tottenham Hotspur FC. Or the drivetime bloggers maybe...that needs to go today too...too much indecision is not good for you..
Today we welcome the rather clever Michael Morpurgo to Drivetime. One of our best-loved authors and storytellers, he has had over 120 books published, been children's laureate and received the MBE in 2006. Warhorse has been such a huge hit for him-the latest production is wonderful-and Private Peaceful is about to be a movie as well. He has 2 new books out 'A Medal for Leroy' and 'Where My Wellies Take Me'; a novel and a poetry anthology respectively. And he's good company too. And we should do STORYTELLER oldies please.
Have a smart and ingenious Monday. See you after 5.

On a train to Winchester you say Simon? Perhaps the length of the journey (and definitely the bacon roll) will provide the perfect setting to work on the dedication - maybe make a shortlist and then have another look at it on the way back home again - and don't forget whoever it was who invented sherbert lemons, in your deliberations!
As usual, am suffering from Monday morning brain freeze (which generally lasts for a further few days) so can only come up with one song - the title doesn't give anything away but the song tells a story particularly well.

We were introduced to Mr Morpurgo when Teen Hoffs was very small and we listened to a story tape of 'Adolphus Tips'. We were hooked. Mr Morpurgo writes books in such a way that both adults and children can enjoy them and take so much from them, on different levels. Teen Hoffs and I read 'Private Peaceful' several years ago - he would read one chapter to me and then I would read to him in return. We both cried buckets at the end but, I think, for different reasons, because of our differing levels of understanding of the story. We are now planning to go to see the film together. May need tissues.
Mr Morpurgo's books have always featured heavily when it comes to Chr***mas requests and this year is no exception with Master Hoffs asking for 'Medal for Leroy'.
Won't say any more apart from to recommend 'Born to Run' (esp for blogger dog lovers), 'Alone on a Wide Wide Sea' (my favourite) and 'Kensuke's Kingdom (the No 1 in the Hoffs family Morpurgo Top Ten).
Oh yes, and if you get a chance to listen to or read what Mr Morpurgo said in his Dimbleby Lecture last year, I would definitely recommend that you take it.
One more thing - we still love 'Itch'!

#19 Hoffs - great post! Lack of children means Michael Morpurgo has rather passed me by but your enthusiasm makes me want to go and read some of his books. I’ve always thought a good book is a good book regardless of the “target audience”. I loved the Hunger Games trilogy (and of course Itch!) Alone on a Wide Wide Sea sounds wonderful.
#21 Shona - thank you! The borrowed dog has a thing for apples, I am being stared at as I type and crunch, he will have to wait for the core.
#36 Autumn Gale - sorry you are not feeling great, even if it is self-inflicted!
The Bell X1 gig on Friday was great. I’ve seen them loads, usually when they are going full band shows, Friday was semi-acoustic. The frontman, Paul Noonon has a fantastically sexy voice. Musically they are a bit of everything, pop, rock, electronic but always with clever lyrics and great tunes. They have been compared to Radiohead & Talking Heads but more pop.
https://youtu.be/vuvmxm-0U8E
Video is from Friday night - first time I have uploaded one so hopefully working ok. Not really that representative but I was so caught up in the gig I forgot to take a video earlier. Those of you who have been (un)lucky enough to be at events with me will know my “being at the front” obsession, especially true at gigs.
From previous blogs
shefsmog - I spent quite a bit of time working in North Lincolnshire when I lived in England.
Jennie Wren - you were asking about Bellowhead - I have their 2 most recent albums Broadside and Hedonism; I would recommend either of them although I think I prefer the earlier one Hedonism but that is probably just because I’ve listened to it more - I am not expert but the songs have a fantastic energy and life about them that I love.

I even have a couple of suggestions:
The Story of the Blues-The Mighty Wah
Never ending story-Limahl
Word Girl-Scritti Politti
The Riddle-Nik Kershaw
Loves Great Adventure-Ultravox
Must go as work to do.
Lots of Love

#59 Flo - they are Irish and have been around since 1999; I first saw them in Leeds years ago so it must have been a recommendation from an Irish online friend so I cant think how I wouldn't have heard of them otherwise. They have achieved some success in the US as one of their songs was played on some teen-drama over there.
#60 Hoffs - *waves frantically back*
#62 Shona - yes there is a fair bit of animal killing in the Hunger Games but if you can get beyond that the books are superb, although a disturbing read. I have to read Island of Wings by Karin Altenberg as it is our bookclub choice. Story about a minister on St Kilda in the 1830’s. The chooser usually chooses good books so looking forward to it.
#71 Jennie - I spoke to Alex Girl when she called CiN, she was lovely.

I am in touch with KatyMac and AlexGirl 'elsewhere' - both are fine but busy with work. Katy hopes to be back amoung us in time for Christmas, and hopefully Alex will be able to pop in as well. It would be lovely to see other erstwhile bloggers too - maybe we should throw a blog Christmas party and see who turns up.
#73 Amelia, I have met Alex a few times in 'real life' and she is indeed lovely!

In the opening Mr M talks about pressing 'send' on book 2. How long does it take from pressing 'send' to the book appearing in the bookshops? Presumably there's an editing process, a printing process etc. How long does it all take?
Just idle curiosity, really.

I've been very busy on this dreary Monday. Just back from seeing the orthopedist - who did a x-ray and a big fat corticosteroid injection in my left shoulder that has not been able to unfreeze since surgery. Fingers crossed, this should do the trick and be able to raise my left arm all the way up.
Time to shift gears as a man called husband just walked in the door and I need to get meatless Monday dinner going. Looking forward to the MM interview.

I'm guessing there is a different NYM/W collating the suggestions. It tends to be one person from each of the blog, FB and Twitter, or sometimes only one person altogether named as suggesting an oldie. A pity, when we've all made such an effort... Ho hum, as I've said before - it's just a bit of fun...
Very interesting interview with Michael Morpurgo. What a fascinating and talented man! I'll be adding him to my reading list.
