What I call a show

Simon Mayo|08:09 UK time, Wednesday, 17 October 2012

This morning I bring you greetings from the Odeon Leicester Square in London's glittering West End, rubbing shoulders with the waifs and strays of the film critic world. It's the London Film Festival and movies are pouring out of every cinematic orifice. Today it's Argo starring Ben Affleck and all I know is that much is expected and the reviews are great. I will report back. Meantime I must push and jostle and see if I can sit next to Mark Lawson.

Yesterday's school trip was notable for a) travelling on the oldest rolling stock in England. Casey Jones would have complained and b) meeting a top pupil who was named after a Star Trek character.

Today it's the return of Miranda Hart to the show and since her last appearance she has picked up a Bafta nomination for best supporting actress in Call The Midwife at the 2012 BAFTA awards and got another series of Miranda underway. Her book intends to be a life manual of assorted disasters and what to do about them. Some of them are hers and some are her from her twitter followers and all are dealt with in a very Miranda-esque way. More at 6.

And how about MIRANDA oldies please? It'll be (altogether) such fun!

Have a nutritious and healthy-option based Wednesday, see you after 5.

    Morning all

I'm actually going to the cinema today. This will be the first time (I think) since the annual family Boxing Day outing to see that year's Peter Jackson movie which we did through the LOTR trilogy and King Kong.

Today - Led Zeppelin's Celebration Day. And then the Bond movie on Friday next week. 5 stars in the Times so I was tempted. And it must be better than Quantum of Solace which was garbage.

Was surprised at how pricey it now is. A whole tenner for Zep if you don't book on-line, and ÂŁ9.10 I think for standard 2D showings before the discount. I'm sure it was only about ÂŁ6 last time I went :-)

  • Comment number 2.

    Morning all

#2 Ken - yes, it does seem pricey these days. In Germany a standard ticket only costs between €6 and €9. And I mean for a current film in a big cinema in Munich or Hamburg. I know if it was cheaper here, I'd go a lot more.

Anyway, better go and put my Miranda thinking cap on.....

  • Comment number 3.

Good Morning Simon and Blog Friends

    Enjoy the cinema Ken!

  • Comment number 5.

Your Lordship, team, NYM and technicolor bloggers,

Did I ever mention that I went to the recording of the "psychiatrist" episode of Miranda? (Shut up man, you've told us that story before). Yes, it was very funny.

His secret soft rock song paused on the CD player was:

    ALONE - Heart

Of course, the obvious one would be:

    PROUD - Heather Small

    But I'll also go for:

IS SHE REALLY GOING OUT HIM? - Joe Jackson

MISFIT - Curiosity Killed The Cat

  • Comment number 6.

    #5 *WITH* HIM

GET IT RIGHT NEXT TIME - Gerry Rafferty

'She's Funny That Way' by Sam Cooke

    'Funny Girl' by Barbara Streisand

'Ay Ay Ay Ay Moosey' by Modern Romance
(Seemingly cruel, but "Moose" is Miranda's own self deprecating description, not mine)

  • Comment number 12.

Its good to have a tricky theme...I'm going to go off for a longer think but leave you with:

    EMBARASSMENT - Madness

    Morning all!

DT team, bloggers, vet and new and of course the DT Dude, shimmy-ing up to the great and good of the movie critique world...

What on earth was the name of the kid at the school named after a star trek character?? Thinking Spock, but hoping for James Tiberius!!

THANKS Lord Ammo so much for the joint mench yesterday(with Amelia?) for Thomas Dolby -2 in 7 days - maybe as the blog is SOOO much quieter nowadays?

Shame to hear that CLP is leaving his bloggers in the lurch with nary a post for days - just as well he doesn't rely on them as Terry W did for his material for the show, they are understandably jumping over the fence to join our merry (daily) gathering.

    RE theme, tweeted these:

Re her always unrequited lurve of gawjus Gary:

'You don't know me' - Ray Charles *swoon*

    'I Want You to Want Me' - Cheap Trick;

    'I can't make you love me' - Bonnie Rait;

Oh and Elvis 'Can't stand up etc' as she's always falling over!

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Simon, are you sure you were on the oldest train in England? I bet the one I took from Doncaster to Sheffield was even older - overheated, noisy and struggled to get up to speed between stations... and I'm fairly sure that's where I caught my cold.

Anyway, Miranda oldies - how about:

FUN, FUN, FUN - Beach Boys

    PROUD - Heather Small

LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU - Robbie Williams

    THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT - The Jam

    ~X~

BTW did you hear your mench yesterday on DT??

Hopefully it's only work-related stress today giving you that 'enough already' feeling so early on in the day?

  • Comment number 33.

#20 I love those old trains that go across country Deebee. Where you can hear the gear change. I always wonder if the driver is sitting there with his foot on a clutch pedal :-)

Did Halifax by train for a football match once and there was one like that that I think on the Doncaster to Halifax leg. It's like being in a bus on rails.

  • Comment number 34.

We used to travel on trains like that when I lived in Reading and we went to outlying villages to visit friends and relatives - I love the sound the doors make when they are shut - a definite 'kerchunk'.

Dreich here. Another late arrival in the office, roadworks and traffic and rain making me grumpy.

    Morning all

Apologies for the absinthe - a weekend away resulted in a miserable cold which left me the mental capacity to do one thing only: on Monday that was work and yestreday it was sleep!

Anyway, back to the fray and I hope all's well in blog-land. I haven't had a chance to catch-up so if there's anything exciting or shocking I should know, please pass it on....

I too can't wait to see Skyfall - although agree about the expense. In my local cinema 'peak time' seems to have been extended for this and so my usual, slightly cheaper preference of early Sunday afternoon is now a full price ticket. Anyway - it would appear it'll be worth it.

Difficult Oldie theme and my mental acuity is still somewhat lacking, so I'll leave it for now....

  • Comment number 40.

Sal - from yesterday, the parakeet discussion.

That's a pity, but totally understand. Depending on which direction you're coming from, my recommendations would be to park in a) Pembroke Lodge car park which is free and has a nice cafe and facilities, then walk across the road along a track where there are some lovely wooded areas. Or b) Sheen Gate car park, also free, and nice wooded areas all around, but no cafe. Or c) Roehampton Gate, biggest car park and cafe, but in the busiest part of the park, and with a huge expanse of rugby fields in front so not good territory for parakeets, so you'd have to turn right and go along the brook, or across the field and up to Spankers Hill (this is where the "Fenton - Jesus Christ" video was filmed!). Oh and the only car park in the middle of the park is at Spanker's Hill, also an easy walk down to Pen Ponds where there are always loads of waterbirds. In fact, that may be your best bet, as there are some nice woods all around there too.

    Hope this is useful!

  • Comment number 41.

    Oh, one more thing:

The stags in the park are particularly stunning right now, with huge antlers. But they're also very aggressive, so keep clear! They have attacked dogs and people. If you're lucky you'll hear them bellowing at each other. The cull is happening in a few weeks - very sad, but otherwise the park would get overcrowded and couldn't support the growing herd.

  • Comment number 42.

#40 Spanker's Hill? What goes on there then?? *titters and sniggers like a school girl*

  • Comment number 43.

  • Comment number 44.

Coincidentally I went to see Liberal Arts in the Showroom in Sheffield last Thursday – lovely place to meet – wish I could be there this weekend. Fantastic film, worth going to see for Allison Janney alone. I am dragging my friend half way across Ireland to see it tomorrow it was so good.

We have a lovely new cinema here – half price tickets on a Tuesday so a bargain I think at £3.50 – comfy seats etc – but they only show mainstream stuff – so I have to travel for a couple of hours to see anything like Liberal Arts. The other problem with the new cinema is that it is part of an “entertainment complex” so you have to walk through all the “amusements” to get to the cinema. Maybe I am easily annoyed but it drives me nuts.

Suzy – yes, I was wondering too the boy’s name. I do have a soft spot for Patrick Stewart. And Mandy not me for the mention last night.

Jenny – what a pain and a nuisance about the dental work – bad enough having to go once!

Autumn_Gale – good to see you back, you popped into my head last night when I was thinking about Wittertainment.

I employ a paperboy with a Star Trek name. Khan. It may be a coincidence, and it may just be that he isn't really a 'morning person', but he can be a bit grumpy now and then.

I also employ a girl that has just had hair extensions fitted. (Is 'fitted' the correct term in this context?) Anyhoo, I asked her how long it took to have it done. Hours apparently. I also asked her if they were real hair. Nope, they aint. Some sort of plasticky stuff. As I pointed out to her, plasticky stuff on your head must save on the trouble of having to carry a brolly about. If looks could kill...

    Hello!

A quick poop by - I'm a day behind - have been listening to last night's show and I just wanted to send a message to the Drivetime crew to say that I really really enjoyed it. Loved the cloud chappie and Bellowhead especially.

#57 - Gill Withagee - hope you are feeling better after your sleep. I'm sporting natty little eyelid-matchsticks today!

Hope to hear the show in real time today - the problem with listening a day late in the middle of the day is hearing a time check and panicking that I'll be late for something or taking note of Sally Traffic's reports before I go out. Looking forward to hearing Miranda. She really makes me chuckle - whenever we watch, however, I am always a little uncomfortable about the similarities that Mr H points out between the lovely Miranda and me.

    Hello hello

Just heard the Miranda interview in the car, which was most amusing.

Well done Jennie Wren (full name!) for The Hollies and Mandy for Elvis Costello. And ponyclubmum for Misfit. Was it an OSM for Heart-Alone?

And thank you your Lordship for the mensh for Proud - had me giggling as I imagine Stevie holding up her mask.

    *feeling greatly aligned*

Thank you Simon for playing The Hollies - great song which I've always liked. Glad you like it too, Florence.

Congratulations to everyone else with a mensh - I heard Mandy, John and Amelia mentioned.

Many thanks John for your post about the 'rutting stags' which would have been very useful, had I read it before setting off this morning! Joking apart, having lived on and around Exmoor for the last 30 years, I know how much of a head start I need to be able to leggit!

What can I say about Richmond Park?

WOW, how lucky you are to live close to such a fabulous setting.

We did what we could in the time that we had. I think we must have gone up Spankers Hill, if that is near to the central car park. There were huge herds of deer all over the park, but here was the best opportunity to photograph them. Its the first pics of deer though that I have ever taken with high rise buildings as a back drop.

We also walked around Pembroke Lodge (the poshest loos I have ever come across in any park!) and saw huge flocks of screeching parakeets, with a kestrel hot on their heels, easy pickings I should imagine.

We hope to return again for another visit and maybe next time we could make it a mini meet, maybe Jilly too, as she isn't that far away?

We did manage to dodge the showers, shame we missed the rainbow though.

Thank you once more John for taking the time to post about the Park. I get a feeling that you are quite proud of where you live and quite rightly so.

    Happy Days.

Mobile Tooth Fairy, with feet firmly on the ground these days. LOL!
