Take your tux to work day.

Simon Mayo|08:46 UK time, Thursday, 18 October 2012

Ok, I admit to being excited. It's James Bond day today. This morning at 10.30 I'll watch the new Skyfall movie and the reviews are so enthusiastic, I'm expecting something special. To get 5 stars (as many reviewers have done) is quite an achievement. I have no knowledge of the plot as I'm trying to avoid any spoilers but all is looking good. Whether Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem can match the photo spread Mark Kermode and I did for Radio Times I doubt but they're promising for youngsters.

Yesterday's movie was Argo and I promised to report back. Well, it's fantastic and Ben Afleck, it's star and it's director is quite something. It is the true story of 6 Americans who escaped from the US Embassy in Tehran when it was stormed in 1979. It manages to be tense, exciting AND laugh out loud funny. Part of it is set in the Hollywood movie world where John Goodman and Alan Arkin are a riot. It it wasn't true, it would be utterly preposterous. Highly recommended.

Nigel has been tweeting about his pumpkin pie. It's a Mark Hix recipe and he was clearly baking late as his photo appeared at 2.13am today. He then, post-show, leads us on a team meal somewhere tasty where he orders for everyone, which is so less stressful. As long there are chips for Matt, we are all ok.

And oldies please for ROUNDABOUTS (bear with me). This is because the Roundabout Appeciation Society has published its calender for 2013 and Holgate Windmill, a working mill on a traffic island near York, is declared the star roundabout of the UK. So let's serenade the humble and not so humble roundabout in your choice of songs.

Have an enthralling and engaging Thursday, see you after 5.

So her directions to a place would be "Go straight ahead and round the pudding..."

Must be orf now. See you at coffee time.

ROUNDABOUT - YES is perfect - I'll second that.

    As a fresh idea -

ARE YOU GONNA GO MY WAY - LENNY KRAVITZ

SPINNING AROUND - KYLIE (I'll take the HOIB hit for the team)

The Jasper Carrott 'Magic Roundabout' would be so good, but probably won't get played at teatime on R2.

  • Comment number 23.

Not really an oldie, but you could play:

SPINNING AROUND IN THE AIR - The Proclaimers

I'm looking forward to seeing 'Skyfall'. I wouldn't say I'm especially a Bond fan, and Daniel Craig doesn't have quite the effect on me that he seems to have on some women... But the reviews I've heard have all been excellent.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 24.

#14 & #17 Florence and John - Set phasers to stunned... ;-) Seriously though, I thought people who had never seen Star Wars were an Urban Legend!

My mister is a big fan of the Bond films (and books) so I've seen all the films many times over. I like Daniel Craig too, so it won't be a burden to go and see Skyfall.

I have also watched more Star Trek than is probably good for my health...

When we collide - Matt Cardle

What goes around comes around - Justin Timberlake (Love this song)

  • Comment number 28.

    Morning all

Yesterday disappeared in a flurry of catching-up (sometimes it's just not worth having a day off work, no matter how bad you feel.....) so I never did make it back to catch up.

Lucky Simon to be seeing Skyfall now. I've been watching quite a few Bonds recently as Sky have the 007 channel during October. I've seen all of the dozens of times but find myself shying away from the Roger Moore era more and more whilst gaining appreciation for Timothy Dalton. Maybe no actor should ever should do more than 3 - the early outings are better than the later ones generally: I loved Goldeneye but Die Another Day had some of the silliest gimicks. On re-watch I've also enjoyed Quantum of Solace more...

Anyway roundabout oldies (mostly additional votes):

    Spinning Around - Kylie

You Spin Me Right Round - Dead or Alive

Stuck in the Middle - Steeler's Wheel

    More later I hope

PS Zoe - likewise on the Star Trek front (have you seen JJ Abrams new offering, Revolution?)

  • Comment number 29.

    Morning Simon,

    2 Oldies for Roundabouts:-

All my life's a Circle - The New Seekers

    Carousel - The Hollies

    Have a good day

    Jackie

  • Comment number 30.

    Morning all

I'll endorese the choice of ROUNDABOUT - YES

I have a mere three live versions of that on my phone :-)

The Led Zep movie was excellent yesterday. I'm not sure the sound in the screen where I saw it was as dynamic as it could have been, but it was very tightly shot so there's a brilliant impression of being right on the stage with the band for most of the film even though it was in the O2 barnatorium.

Now, do I buy the Blu-Ray and audio discs package next month, or just the audio discs? Decisions, decisions. I have a number of concert DVDs/BluRays and find that I watch them once and then extract the audio for listening and don't bother watching them again. But this one, I think I might just watch it more than once.......

  • Comment number 31.

    Morning all.

For anyone that has driven through Swindon ( I took my driving test there and passed, amazingly! ) ....

    CONFUSION! - ELO!

For those not in the know, they have a magic roundabout, which consists of five mini roundabouts and a sixth central one.

  • Comment number 32.

Morning all. Seem to be very busy these days but when you're contracting that's generally a good thing.

No time to read back, so apologies for any repititions

THE BYRDS - Turn Turn Turn

TALKING HEADS - Road To Nowhere

PHIL COLLINS - I Missed Again

THOMPSON TWINS - Into The Gap

MAXINE NIGHTINGALE - Right Back Where We Started From

SUZANNE VEGA - Left of Center

And considering that the roundabout has a windmill, can I suggest the rather beautiful (and in my opinion better than the original)

THE COLOURFIELD - Windmills Of Your Mind

I also suspect that Jasper Carrott's 'Magic Roundabout' is a non-starter...

  • Comment number 33.

Hemel Hempstead has one of those too. Having driven round both my tip is "keep looking right"

It's a very scary thing the first time you use it and you realise that people are effectively traversing the main central one in the wrong direction.

#28 My attitude to films is pretty much the same as my attitude to music. There are only two types - good and bad. I'm not particularly concerned with the genre - although I would think twice about going to see a film labelled 'horror'... One of the things I love about Wittertainment is hearing about films that I wouldn't otherwise necessarily bother with - I've enjoyed seeing a few films on that basis.

Aha Ken, yes we were also just saying thats where the other one was, if indeed there is only one more??

The first time I saw the one in Swindon was on my first lesson, a bit different from what you come across on the winding lanes of Exmoor, mind you, you can come across some pretty bizarre things there too! I once drove up a steep hill, behind a tractor towing a round baler, that came of its hitchings and somersaulted down the hill like a bouncing bomb, before embedding itself on the bonnet of the car in front of me!! Luckily, no-one hurt, but scary all the same.

Thursdee Greetings Mr Mayo & ALL Bloggers Of Mr, Master, Miss, Mrs, Missus, Madam, Sir, Dr, Prof... 'ope 'ave Noot Missed Anyone.... Oh I Yeah... Misses...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

Where do a start??? Roundabouts or work????

Roundabouts - A love roundabouts... One of the best inventions.... Simple, low maintenance, can be a focul point of town centre with a clock, flowers, statues.... And it keeps the traffic flowing according ter conditions... If it is rush 'our then maybe a wait ter get onter it... Or if late at night no need ter stop if the coast is clear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unlike traffic lights that are my number one pet 'ate of the roads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    I DETEST traffic lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always on red.... If they're on green as yer come upter them they nearly always change ter red!!!!!!

And 'ow expensive they are ter install... I've 'eard each traffic light costs around 30k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So a major junction would cost 500k plus ter install!!!!!!

    Then they need regular maitenance!!!!!

A roundabout is near maintenance free.... Maybe just a abitta 'orticulture attendance!!!!

    They cause traffic jams!!!!!!

As a trucker and a driver of 20 years i've seen examples of the problems traffic lights cause!!!!

A recent example coming out of Chester.... They've spent maybe a million pound totally ripping up the giant roundabout that's been there for as long as i've been alive!!!!!

And put in the most insane complicated set of utter madness in the form of traffic lights!!!!!!

The first time I came across them I came near to 'aving an accident!!!!!

The 70mph dual carriageway on approach suddenly there was a queue of staionary traffic in the middle of the dee!!!!!!!!

Taking me by suprise and although nowhere near 'aving an accident a 'ad ter brake 'ard from 'igh spped ter a stanstill.... Wondering why is traffic queueing 'ere when ave never known any queues 'ere!!!!!!!

Low and behold 'ahead was a MASS of red lights.... Stopping all the traffic that used ter simple stop and go on the rounabout.... Sometimes not needing ter stop!!!!!

A month ago a came across the roundabout again on the main road inter Chester city centre!!!!!

Again queeing for 4 minutes.... With the madest right turn ave ever known!!!!!!

While in the traffic a counted 50 traffic lights!!!!!!

    Yes FIFTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@!!@!!@@!!!@!@!!@!!!!

It's only got 5 roads that come onto it.... So why 50 plus lights???????

Then after being stopped 3 times as I proceeded through the different sections.... The confused driver in front of me suddenly changed direction as they missed there exit and nearly 'it me!!!!!!

I 'ad ter brake ter let them come the same way as me!!!!!!

The drvier ahead was totally confused by the madness that they were trying ter negotiate!!!!

Then as we drove inter Chester..... stationary traffic as far as the eye could see!!!!!

About a one mile jam of stationary cars.... All with fed up drivers!!!!!

All with cars burning wasted fuel... polluting the environment while sat stationary!!!!!!

And it wasn't even rush 'our!!!!!!

I 'ate ter think 'ow bad it must be at peak time!!!!!!!

It used ter be a VERY large roundabout.... Only one roundabout.... Simple!

    It worked fine!!!!!!!!

So why do the IDIOTS in the council waste our mnoney when the country is mean't ter be broke on ruining the Chester drivers' lives by installing this.... what can only be called MADNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And this is not a one off... I see new sets of traffic lights popping up everywhere and causing traffic jams!!!!!!!

Recently on Jezza Vine's show they where talking about Leek town centre!!!!!

The residents there didn't want their picturesque roundabout ripping up for traffic lights!!!!!

The protested but the council still went ahead and right now are installing lights!!!!!!

Been through there many a time in me truck and never 'ad long delays!!!!!

    So why put in lights?????

THe same 'appened at Arrowe Park R/A on The Wirrla nea rmy 'ome!!!!!!

The local paper 'ad protests from residents!!!!!!

But still the yput them in.... The result... long delays at peak time!!!!!

So why when councils are desperate ter save money.... And when traffic lights don't work.... And cost alot ter maintain... Why are so many still being installed??????

Call me cynical but it would not suprise me if these billion pound companies that are on the stockmarket that install and maintain traffic lights.... It would suprise me if councillors are getting back 'anders from these cash rich companies ter get contracts from local councils!!!!!!

I took my driving test in Ashbourne in Derbyshire, where, at the time, they quizzed you vociferously on how to drive on a roundabout, due to the fact that they couldn't actually observe you performing any actual maneuvers (manoeuvres, manoeuvers,?) as there weren't any roundabouts within driving distance of the test centre. Easy Peasy!

#28 Autumn Gale - The mister watched Licence To Kill the other day, and it was the first Bond film I ever saw at the cinema. I never disliked Timothy Dalton as Bond, but I did feel he was missing something, I preferred Pierce Brosnan, and now Daniel Craig. I've got a certain fondness for the Roger Moore Bond films, but they were a bit 'Carry On James Bond' at times with all the double entendres!

Revolution? Is that the one where all electrical stuff stops working? I haven't seen it, but I heard it had mixed reviews.

I'll give any film a go, no matter what the genre, as long as it has an interesting premise. I do love Science Fiction stuff though, TV and Movies, because any subject can be tackled via Sci-Fi, and indeed has been over the years, from racism to sexism, and just about every other ism inbetween too. It puzzles me when people say that Sci-Fi is far-fetched, because the allegories contained within the stories are often painfully down to earth. For example, 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' was about the American fear of Communism, 'Godzilla' was a representation of Japan's post WWII fears, 'Planet of the Apes' tackled racism, 'E.T' was basically a retelling of the story of Jesus, with a bit of children dealing with divorce and separation anxiety thrown in for good measure! The list goes on and on.

Not much chance to post yesterday afternoon but I did giggle quite a lot when reading the blog. I’m not sure what the office makes of my occasional outbursts of mirth.

I’ve never really listened to Mike Harding – I tend to switch to 6 Music after 7. Very happy to hear that Mark Radcliffe will be taking over. I love him with and without Stuart Maconie (I’m listening to his Hope and Glory book at the moment).

John – loving the new name and yes, you were most aligned last night. Thank you remembering you forgot me! And I now know why Proud and Alone were such good choices!

One thing I like about his Lordship is that even if I don’t know or even like the person he is interviewing it is still always engaging and entertaining. I had no particular opinions on Miranda but the interview was interesting and laugh out loud funny.

I watched James Bond growing up but haven’t paid that much attention to the more recent ones. I’m sure when we first got a video recorder (about 1980 – would that be right?) the first film we rented was a James Bond.

Ken – I went through a phase of buying live DVDs and like you found I watched them once and never again. I just feels weird to sit on the sofa and watch a gig – cant explain why.

Sir C – just listening to that version of Windmills – it is lovely

Zoe - yes that's the one. I've quite enjoyed the 1st couple, although the teenage heroine is a bit irritating. Do you read in the 'urban fantasy' genre too? I know you do Charlaine Harris, have you read Karen Chance or Illona Andrews?

I sat my test in Wilmslow which at the time, like Shona & Paul's experiences, lacked somewhat in 'testing' road-craft; one roundabout, a small incline for the hill start and lots of wide, traffic free 30s suburban roads for 3 point turning and reversing round corners. In common with many others, I passed first time - it's now closed as a test centre!

#57 Yup, you're right Amelia, I think that's why. Generally these days if there's an audio CD-only version that's what I'll buy. It's it's on a video disc only then the tools exist to extract the audio so that's what I do.

#43 Bingo, couldn't agree more. roundabouts beat lights any time. In Welwyn Garden City we used to have a strange little affair on a cross-roads near the town centre which was almost two mini-roundabouts which overlaid each other, kinda enforcing traffic light style passing discipline.

That was considered too confusing apparently (I can't think why, give way to traffic from the right is a quite simple concept in roundabout negotiation) and replaced by traffic lights....which are green from only one direction at a time!

It now takes way more time to get over that crossroad than it ever did previously, and I doubt whether it is safer.

We had a 'Magic roundabout' near here - one large central roundabout and 5 satelitte roundabouts so that you went round the big roundabout the 'wrong' way, seemingly.

There were so many police down there when it opened, you couldn't possibly go wrong - but 'they' have decided that now, after ?? years that it doesn't work and they have redesigned the junction again at vast cost.

Keeps someone in a job, I suppose.

#65 Sal, it looks very wet in your clip and I don't know, why in recent years, that there is so much rain... when I was young, I'm sure it was dry from Easter until the end of September and now not a week goes by without awful floods somewhere in the UK!

It's really mild and dry here at the moment and I took this picture about an hour ago in my local park. Hope it's nice where blogpoppets are. I'm taking my sister-in-law to a matinee of Phantom this afternoon so will listen to Drivetime on the drive home.

    Afternoon all!

Really sorry, can't stay for chat today (hmm, perhaps not a bad thing knowing how much I ramble on)

Does 'The Magic Roundabout' in Swindon feature on the calendar? Would be such a shame if it didn't, although it would make an interesting photograph as it really isn't the most attractive place. Anyway, both of my offerings are based on my experience of this particular place:

YOU SPIN ME ROUND - THEA GILMORE (infinitely preferable to the Alvin and the Chipmunks version which some small people seem to like)

IT'll CHEW YOU UP AND SPIT YOU OUT - CONCRETE BLONDE

Sorry, haven't read back so if anyone else has chosen either of these, please can I share?

Have a good afternoon all x

Just quickly - if the NYM is reading this, even if you don't pick the Thea Gilmore song for this theme, please please could it be played soonish on the show - best version of the song ever. Go on, you know you want to! Thanks x

Very busy trying to catch up after my hols so not had much time to poop in to blog.

#70 Brandon - didn't think that song was about cars? (Where is Harry when you need him?)

Don't think has been suggested, esp for all those large mutli-lane gyratory type roundabouts

BLIND FAITH - CAN'T FIND MY WAY HOME.

Shona - glad you were finally able to book somewhere for sat.

#76 - the artist for the first tune would be quite appropriate as today is cookery day on DT.

Had a double rainbow here this morning on my way to work - most impressive.

I took my driving test in Preston in 1977 with an examiner who had a reputation for wandering off all the standard test routes. I had no idea where I was most of the time (in my home town). Still managed to pass first time ! I always liked the idea of taking a test on the Isle of Arran - no traffic lights, no roundabouts, possible issues from inattentive tourists and sheep.

Rad Mac seem to have lost it this afternoon – they are talking about giant tomatoes doing the hovering.

Parsley_cat - traffic jams Irish style (taken through car window with phone so rubbish photo) https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8475/8099807627_2e04415b55_b.jpg

Florence - thank you for the photo help - although it only works in IE and not Safari for some reason - anyway at least I know how to do it now!

  • Comment number 85.

#83 - true enough - I've been to Inveraray, too. It's a beautiful part of the world. I love the whole of the west coast of Scotland. The east is also appealing, but doesn't do it for me the same way the west does.

  • Comment number 86.

#84 - the fluffy one on the left is overtaking on the wrong side. No wonder it's ended in such a jam.

In Canada (Ontario specifically) outside the cities you are much more likely to collide with a bear, moose or (most unpleasantly) a skunk than with another vehicle. I've seen a photo of the main Canada highway at 5 in the afternoon on a weekday - not another vehicle as far as the eye can see.

#86 Did you live in Canada or do you just like looking a photographs of highways and motorways?

  • Comment number 91.

#57 amelia - The Colourfield version is rather lovely, isn't it? Something hauntingly vulnerable about Terry Hall's voice on that one. And i haven't forgotten about the Confessions thing - just haven't had the time to recount it.

  • Comment number 92.

#90 - Shona - I may be a bit strange, but not quite to that extent. A friend of mine (no, really) is a regular visitor to Ontario and took the photo on a road trip to show us how congested their roads aren't.

There's nothing wrong with the east coast, I just prefer the mountains and sea lochs, that's all. I used to climb (not with ropes), so I've been up that coast a few times. Never quite made it to the north coast, only getting as far as a plae called Laxford Bridge which stands beneath the mountains Arkle and Foinavon - names for the horse racing fans.

  • Comment number 93.

#92 I was pulling your tail Parsley_cat ;0) I prefer the scenery on the West too! The north coast beaches are to die for so you would enjoy a visit. I was once offered an interview for a job in Kinlochbervie - top left hand corner of Scotland. However, I didn't go for the interview as I had just been given a job elsewhere. Took a trip up north to see the place though and crikey it's remote.

    Afternoon all!

The day got away from me - now I don't work Fridays, it tends to be a bit manic dotting i's and crossing t's for tomorrow.

Hope you're all fine and dandy, if not *hugs* to the poorly blogpoppets.

We have tickets for the Bond opening night 'premier' evening in Oxford...Mr e is obv much more excited than me...

Might go see Argo (why that title?? is it missing a 'nauts'??) this weekend OR the RSC play based on Romeo & Juliet, there's about £20 per ticket difference.

I tweeted 'DIZZY' early this morning - either version - I'm guessing I'm not alone.

Anyone who lives round here and has been to Milton Keynes or Swindon will sympathize.

Doing a 6-miler tomorrow in the (hopefully) autumn sunshine, followed by a spot of lunch and some mooching, all with my mate who also doend't work Fridays so prob not here till Monday.

Enjoy your weekends all & good luck for the ARFO.

I'm about to shut up the shutters and skip up the road. No ARFO from me tomorrow (day off) I don't think as I'll have too much to do getting ready for Sheffield - hair dye, fake bake etc *titters*

Busy evening ahead too so be good and I'll catch you all later. X
