Travelling Boy

Simon Mayo|08:26 UK time, Tuesday, 23 October 2012

Good morning from a dark and dank London. One of those days when the darkness seems to last for a long time. At least I'm staying put for most of it, with no train journeys, school visits or book waving to do. A sedate breakfast then a tortuous day of rewrites before WORK and the DAY JOB takes over.

Art Garfunkel is our guest. One of the THE voices of my growing up, Simon and Garfunkel were my earliest musical devotion. I was late to the party being too young to be a part of that sixties folk world but Bridge Over Troubled Water was my first album, Paul Simon my first proper concert (£5 at the London Palladium). Radio 1 had an enormous series called 'Simon and Garfunkel Together and Alone' and I recorded the whole series with a microphone next to my radio. I knew every word. I recorded the interview a couple of days ago before Art flew back home and he is, I would say, a delightful if somewhat eccentric interview. On introduction, I said 'Hello Art, I'm Simon.' He said 'I hate that name!' He was joking but it gave an insight into his mindset I thought. It's a good chat-hear Art after 6.

And SKYFALL/JAMES BOND PREMIERE OLDIES please. Chris was talking about driving past the Royal Albert Hall this morning and that it is all set, red carpet out and poised for the showbiz event of the autumn. The movie is fantastic, maybe the best Bond ever and I'm hoping to make it tonight to see it again. The fact that you have to be seated by 7.10 is, admittedly, an issue. I may well be all revved up with no place to go (other than home).

Have a sprightly and energetic Tuesday, see you after 5.

    Morning all

Hmm, an excuse for first concerts and albums reminiscences!

Hmm, first album on vinyl I think was "Abba's Greatest Hits Vol 1", which pre-dated Arrival I believe. First rock album was "A Day At The Races" which really kicked off my love of music.

First concert - Steve Hackett at Poole Arts Centre.

That first experience concert experience is really quite something when you feel bass notes hitting you on your chest for the first time (front row of the circle may well have contributed to that sensation).

No idea about the oldies theme at the moment.

  • Comment number 4.

To kick off the oldies selection may I suggest:

HANDBAGS AND GLADRAGS - Rod Stewart

I WISH I WAS JAMES BOND - Souting for Girls

    CHASING CARS - Snow Patrol

    DANIEL - Elton John

    Moring all,

Woke up yesterday with an awful pain in my mouth. Was lucky enough to get an app with the dentist for his evening surgery. Lots of fathing about with an x-ray machine later, he told my not only do I have an absess, I have TWO of the things next to each other !?? Oh joy. Now on tabs for the little blighters. Grrrrr

What say, DIAMONDS AND PEARS - PRINCE as i the plot always seems to involve the theft of precious stones.

Hoping to see Skyfall on Friday while cherub is at school, as we wont get a chance during Half Term next week. While she does rather love watching car chases from asorted Bond movies I seriously doubt she would sit through a whole one yet. Then again, I was youger than her when first taken to watch one, so perhaps this could be her first :-)

Looking dry here, but not sure for how long. Hope all is well with you dear peeps.

    Hi Simon and everyone

Back in the room today after a hectic wild goose chase yesterday courtesy of a duff SatNav!!! Good news though as the practice in question are going to use me on a job by job basis rather than standard hour week, basically I will be completing the accounts and tax of various clients and get paid on basis of a third of what they are billed! Also another two films want to use me this way which is good news and softens the blow of a rejection this morning which I am glad because I think a lackie was wanted not someone who uses their own initiative!!

Hope you are better now Deebee, don't be ill for Monday as time to celebrate our joint birthday again....does that make me a Blogvet if I remember blogging on my birthday last year?

My first album that i had was a 2 album compilation of 1981 hits called "Superhits 1 and 2". it contained Altered Images, Depeche Mode and Annika on it!

My first concert was Duran Duran at the NEC in 1984 on the day of my last exam and it was a free homecoming concert after them being away in the Caribbean shooting videos!

    Now Bond tunes:

    1.DANIEL - Elton John

    2.SMOOTH OPERATOR - Sade

    3. RED - Daniel Merryweather ( Carpet)

    4. MISTER BLUE SKY - ELO

    5. GOLDENEYE - Tina Turner

    6. GOLD - Spandau Ballet

    7. HERO - Enrique Igelsias

    8. CHASING CARS - Snow Patrol

    9. GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS - Sailor

    10. FALLIN - Alicia Keys

Oh well must crack on, have an agency meeting to discuss role I am being put forward for at what I think is the new name for the Learning and Skills Council.

    Have a nice day

    Laters

    Mandy ;)

FLOCK OF SEAGULLS - Wishing (If I Had A Photograph of You)

My sister bought it, but by march 82 had decided she prefered 'tapes', so gave the album to my brother and I. It was our first PROPPER record (ie not the Smurfs) and we were overjoyed with it:-)

Coffee time... It's a bit quiet on here today.

Big excitement at work - not sure how much I'm allowed to say but the Bee Bee Cee are here with a well known actress/comedian filming for a new science based TV series... :o)

My children are coming home from Uni this weekend, and we are going to see 'Skyfall' on Saturday. Really looking forward to it! I'm also looking forward to the Top Gear special on Bond cars which is going out next Monday night - as some of you know, I am a bit of an Aston Martin fan (hence my blogname)

#7 I nearly went for that one, Sal - good choice!

#8 Gill - oucheee! Hope the antibiotics kick in soon for you.

#17 Yes, feeling much better thanks Mandy.

#33 - too quiet, like the lull before the storm. Perhaps everyone is in stealth mode, in keeping with the espionage theme.

I don't understand the Floorboards reference, though.

Hello Everybody. A lot of good songs chosen already so I will add to the pot with these:

ONE NIGHT WITH YOU - ELVIS (That's all James Bond usually has with the ladies)

SEX ON FIRE - KINGS OF LEON

Like Deebee, I don't know if I should admit that my first ever concert was The Bay City Rollers in 1974 closely followed by David Essex when his album All The Fun Of The Fair was released.

  • Comment number 37.

ISTANBUL (not Constantinople) - THE 4 LADS or THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS

Greetings Mayo Man & ALL Of Blogging Britain...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

    Mayo Man - WHATTA COINCIDENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yer title and first sentence fits exactly whatta was wanting ter share with yersen and all nice bloggers...

Ave just goot up as presently am on nights... Just for now kindly my employers 'ave put me on nights so a can do light duties whilst me back is still not repaired!!!!!!!

Working for a BIG supermarlet a can't push 'eavy cages of goddies inter supermarkets so ave been put on nights ter just do depot ter depot/ factory ter depot collections of goods.... Which is driivng only mainly and no 'eavy lifting or pushing of stuff!!!!!!!!!!

Last night on me final run a was 41 tonnes.... Loaded with a mix of Fosters, Strongbow, 'ienekin and Tiger beer.... Although noot allowed ter dive in ter me load... Me nose was very much raised and sniffing during loading!!!!!!

Noot that am boasting that am 41 tonnes.... But a suppose it could be a warning ter the bad drivers who drive 4x4 or Range Rovers who think 'cos they 'ave a large car they own the road... A Range Rover is 3 and a bit tonnes.... Nothing compared ter a fully loaded rig!!!!!!!!!!

What am trying ter say is when it comes ter being around a large 'eavy aychGV road safety should noot be taken lightly..... LITERALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A 'ad a pleasant nights driving.... The only moment of stupidity a witnessed all night was from the make of car 'ave identified as the number one all the nutters buy/ get on finance.... Audis!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A pulled up ter a set of lights that were on red and stopped!!!!!!

As a did an Audi came along side me.... And then drove through the red light like a mad man.... With a total disregard for road safety or road laws!!!!!!!!!

Not just as it was changing... Like 10 seconds before it changed ter green!!!!!

A couldn't beleive whatta was seeing... VERY much like Victor Meldrew!!!!!!

But like ave said before on the blog.... It seems when yer buy an Audi yer own the road along with yer Audi!!!!!!!!!!

    Always an Audi all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A also 'ad an incident in McD's car park a few days ago..... When trying ter reverse an idiot came right up behind me trying ter intimidate me... Acting like a complete moron.... Guess what make of car???????

    Enough said!

PS ALL - Thanks for yer kind words of encouragementation on me cycling!!!!!!!!!!

In a way am glad ave gotta bad back presently... It's making me feel stronger and more determined than ever ter do well at me cycling!!!!!!!!

    NOTHING will stop me!!!!!!! ;-)))))

Song for Whoever -The Beautiful South

  • Comment number 43.

PS The only Bond type song a would choose is the 2006 Bond theme by Chris Cornell - You Know My Name.... It really did it for me... A great wrock tune..... Just as a wrock tune even if it wasn't written for Bond it still is a great wrock tune that sadly gets played very little on the radio.... But it was written for a Bond film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That Chris Cornell 'as a brilliant voice and it's a shame 'e seems ter 'ave gone quiet... Could 'ave been a BIG wrock star!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Gotta go.....

The rat catcher is due ter kncok on me door!!!!!!!

#19 David Hepworth was tweeting about that Quo documentary at the weekend. Apparently Lancaster and Coughlan are in it and they play a song or two at Shepperton studios with the old, proper lineup?

He was noting how good and fresh the Coughlan and Lancaster era stuff sounds and how not so good and fresh the stuff sounds from after they left and were replaced by the two chaps that nobody can name.

I've just had a memory jolt! Cannot remember the name of the song or the artist but I have a single that mimics James Bond. It's a B side to the TV Detective MacLeod (yes, I have some rubbish right enough).

    I remember some of the lyrics;

"Mmm", she said. "Where did you learn to kiss like that?"

"Sucking porridge through a straw," I replied (Bond)

There are a couple more funny lines I remember but I don't think the Mods will let me post.........but I'll try

  • Comment number 47.

    Some more lyrics...............

"I was told I was going to Bangkok. Well, I can fight as dirty as the next man!"

  • Comment number 48.

    Late suggestion:

PAUL McCARTNEY - Spies Like Us

#44 It was quite good, actually. Shone some light on a few myths that there have been about the band's history.

The documentary finished with the original Frantic Four playing 'In My Chair' at Shepperton Studios, and apparently there's a fair bit more of that on the DVD bonus disc. For me that alone makes it worth buying.

As for good and fresh, that's always such a subjective thing. Different songwriters, music trends, producers, band members; all of these are going to make a difference. That said, I reckon that between 1972 and 1980 they couldn't put a foot wrong, but even the latter albums with JC and AL were weak.

The new line up? Well, I reckon since 1986 when Quo reformed there have been maybe five or six decent albums. Some very mediocre ones. And at least three which were, fankly, embarrassing.

    James Bond will never die

    Live forever Oaisis

Last of the lyrics I remember:

Enjoy the show everyone. I'm heading out to the field for the rest of the day.

    Catch you later

  • Comment number 52.

#44 Ken, a friend of mine who is a drummer in a group makes the same comparions as you and he was at the Quo do last night (also the Stones one the other night) and said as expected, Rossi and Parfitt got the biggest press reaction but Rhino got most attention from the fans, also that Matt and Spud went inside without anyone seeming to notice them!

Like a lot of people, I only know who Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt are and they're always the two who are shown in interviews, so perhaps they are 'Status Quo' and the rest are 'paid employees'!

  • Comment number 53.

#51 Sheffield Tourist, I don't know what it's like where you are, but there's a bit of a haar around here today, but at least it's not cold so I hope your field isn't too misty!

  • Comment number 54.

    #33 and #34... Floorboards?

  • Comment number 55.

Shona I really have no idea what that song is ?????

Bingo, I agree the Chris Cornell song is excelant and fitted really well with Casino Royal. Gonna have to get off the pc soon as hubbs is due to make a 'Skype' (other call providers are avaliable). The only prob with making the call at this time is he miss's out on the school pick up (cherub likes him to wait at the gate for her even though shes all grown up year 6 now), last week when it happened she came stomping out to me at the crossing saying WHERES DAD !?!? to which I replied in my best Adele impersonation 'He on the SKYPE-CALLL' !!!!!

I should take this show on the road, oh no wait a minute I was alrealy in the road when I did it so tecnically it already is :-)

    oh I need some chocolate.

    What have I missed?

Glad that I wont miss Art Garfunkel on tonight's show. Saw him live many moons ago in London. Probably one of my first concerts, thinking about it.

#52 Florence - I saw Matt Letley easily enough, and he had a few autograph hunters as he came in. Spud seemed to be in there quite early. I think you have to bear in mind though that many of the fans there probably haven't seen him much - if at all - since 1981, so he might not have been that recognisable. I had to look twice to make sure I had actually recognised him!

Andy Bown seemed to be able to enter the auditorium and take his seat relatively undisturbed too.

I had no idea, that was why you had chosen your blog name!! I thought it was just a twist on your own name, shows what I know.

Gill, the very same as I had, there is some link with Coeliac disease and teeth issues.

I had my abcess for over a month, before the dentist finally agreed to pull the tooth. (adds up in mind, the price of xrays and then a further trip to have extraction, not to mention the ouchiness!!!) Yup :O

Sort of a blanket with sleeves, some even come with pockets for tv remotes and the like. Actually the one I saw today, calls itself a shawl, but in my eyes a slanket all the same.

  • Comment number 68.

#65 - presumably not a store of Swedish origin either. I'd guess German ?

  • Comment number 69.

You're getting warm now Parsley Cat ;)

I actually went in for some blueberries. No joy there and everywhere else stocking them are charging an arm and a leg.

James Bond oldies - how about "The Lonely Spy" by Lori and the Chameleons, or "Contact in Red Square" by Blondie?

Well done to any menshees tonight - will listen again tomorrow - otherwise occupied tonight, celebrating my weight loss with a Chinese take-away, oddly enough. Once in a while you have to have a treat.......

    You enjoy your treat Jennie.

We've been lucky enough, to sort out a gluten free option with our 'very good' local Chinese.

Happy Days, happy days indeed. (Just now and again, I hasten to add!!)

Have a word Gill. You might be surprised.

I dismissed it entirely and we felt a bit guilty about not telling them why we hadn't eaten there lately (not that we have that many, you understand, but village life..) then they explained, that they have other customers that have to have GF and a lot of their dishes are thickened with potato starch. You just have to avoid the obvious, battered and anything with soya sauce.

I'll send you a list of what we order here, I know straight away, if there is a single 'oodle' of gluten in anything I eat, as I cant move!! I made some sandwiches on Saturday, for our bike ride and used ELHs cheaper version of cream cheese. They only thicken it with wheat fibre!!

    Hey ho!

    Evening All!

Welcome back Molly Coddle! I hope you had a great holiday.

Loved the interview with Art Garfunkel. Is he ever so slightly bonkers...? Thought Simon handled him very well, and was clearly enjoying it. Breakaway is one of my all time favourite albums. I have it on vinyl, and about a year ago I bought the MP3 version (as we no longer have a record player). Like Sal and Molly I love 'Disney Girls' also '99 miles from LA' and 'My little town' which of course Paul Simon sang with him.

Welcome to the blog Fred Lemon! Fraid you'll have to get in a bit earlier to have a chance of your suggestion being picked. It would be good to know the cut off time - although I guess it may vary depending on how busy the team is with planning other stuff for the show.

Well done for your mensh, Gill! Mr B was talking over it, but I just about heard your name and in doing so failed to pay attention to the rest of what he was saying. Oops! Missed my mensh - thanks to Shona and Amelia for telling me. Thank goodness for ithingy...

I may not be around for choon choosing tomorrow morning, as I have a meeting first thing. Might be able to tweet a couple of suggestions if Simon tells us the theme early enough, and I should be back for some chat later in the day.

    Night night.

Bingo Star, I have just heard your name on Janice Long's programme! Did you hear her read out my email to Colin Blunstone about when I first saw him in the Zombies many moons ago with Dionne Warwick, The Isley Brothers and Searchers who are all still playing now. I saw the Zombies earlier this year and amazing they still tour the world!

Night night Bingo (and Gazza too) if your still around xx
