Chin up

Simon Mayo|09:16 UK time, Monday, 15 October 2012

Morning to all bloggers, new and vet. Hope weekend was tip-top. Interesting to read of bloggers in the audience for the 5L show (hello Paul, Amelia, Zoe and Deebee-is that everyone?) and glad everyone seems to have had a good time. We did indeed have to disappear pdq, though as it turns out I could have hung around, walked to Radio Sheffield and done some shopping on the way. We had the highest quality cupboard to broadcast from (technically an NCA studio) and some lovely helpful staff to help us onto the air. Splendid chats for 2 hours and you might remember the young lad who was going to watch his brother play for Edinburgh against Saracens. I said we would look out for his result and cheer him on his way. Well unfortunately it turned out to be a 0-45 loss for our ARF friend and his brother so that didn't quite work out quite the way he wanted.

So a new week and a new show today with Suzanne Vega singing live. 7 million records sold and 7 grammys too, her voice is as warm as it ever was. She is re-recording her back catalogue which is not uncommon amongst artists who don't own their original recordings, but what is different is her release of the songs thematically. 'Close up Volume 4, Songs of Family' is her latest CD and a delight. It is also 25 years since 'Solitude Standing and her song 'Luka' became a most unlikely hit. You'll hear her after 6.

And songs today (as Felix Baumgartner got his day last week) for DOGWALKERS. There is a documentary on BBC2 tonight 'Wonderland:Walking with Dogs' and it is, by all accounts, rather wonderful. So dogwalkers get their day, your help please.

Have a friendly and optimistic Monday, see you after 5.

  • Comment number 24.

Good morning everyone, I'm back - what? You didn't realise I was gone? Ho hum. Wish I wasn't. Had a fantastic week in my spiritual home - the Northumberland coast. It was bright and sunny and gorgeous and only rained once, and that was overnight so didn't matter. Lots of birds watched, lots of walks walked, lots of beaches combed and lots of chilling done. The dogs, and the kids, loved their 6+ hour long walks on the beaches and the dunes - sheer perfection.......

Anyway, back to earth with a huge bump and the stress of 'normal' life again (been back less than 2 whole days and have knots in my shoulders already) in the wet and cold of the Scottish Borders. Kids are back at school. Dogs have been out for their much shorter than 6 hour walk this morning in the mud which has expanded while I've been away so I'd like to suggest

THE HIPPOPOTAMUS SONG - Flanders and Swann (mud, mud, glorious mud)

My dog walks for the past couple of years, summer and winter alike, have been muddy. It just never dries out completely - not like the long stretches of sand on the Northumberland coast.... sorry, distracted.

Would also like to second some of the suggestions already made if that's ok?

HAND IN GLOVE - The Smiths (needed gloves this morning and there are glove shaped poo bags available, sorry, too much info)

DOG EAT DOG - Adam & the Ants

HOUNDS OF LOVE - Kate Bush

Well, must dash - yes, already, doesn't take long for the chaos to restart, does it? Might see if I can poop back later.

    Have fun and play nicely.

Good morning Simon, team and lovely blogsters,

Hope all is well on this rather dull Monday morning.

I should be a bit of an expert with this theme as it is something I do on a daily basis, come rain or shine - although it does seem to be more of the former lately, with the exception of this weekend which delivered some glorious Autumnal sunshine, beautiful walking weather indeed.

Just a few suggestions from me:

JUST WALKING IN THE RAIN - JOHNNY RAY

WALK OF LIFE - DIRE STRAITS

YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE - GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS

    COME RUNNING - VAN MORRISON

Hmmm, dog walking. As far as my rambunctious husky is concerned it would have to be:

    'Runaway' - Del Shannon

An hour and a half it took me to get her back after pegging it out of the park last week!

For the more obedient pooch though:

'Run To You' - Bryan Adams

    'I Will Follow' - U2

    'I'm Walking' - Fats Domino

'The Wild Rover' - The Dubiners

'Right By Your Side' - The Eurythmics

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

How lovely to get a mention in dispatches - thank you, Simon! I think the confusion might have been because Paul posted that he could see us on the webcam, but I think he was watching on his computer, not there at the Crucible.

Still a bit bunged up but my cold is much better, although I do sound like a 60 a day addict... My brain seems to have turned to mush as well - you'd think as a dog owner/walker I'd be able to come up with at least a few gems but all I can offer for today's oldies (and a possible HOIB) is:

THE PUPPY SONG - David Cassidy

Welcome back Erica! Glad to hear you had a good time in Northumberland. It's a part of the country I've never visited, but always wanted to.

As for choons. Hmmmm.... Well one thing I always think about owning a dog is that no matter how you might feel you have to walk them in all weathers so my very tenuous suggestion is:

BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE by I think I'll plump for Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews.

Not a hope if hell of it being played but at least I had a go!

    Have a good day.x

  • Comment number 39.

Probably best that a cat doesn't get involved in dog related matters. We wouldn't want this quality dialogue to degenerate into some kind of Tom & Jerry / Itchy & Scratchy free for all, would we ?

Did anyone else see Felix (another cat link ?) free falling last night. He landed safely on his feet - must be a cat !

Hello. Quick poop by to congratulate Deebee (hope you feel better soon), Zoe, Mr Zoe and Amelia for their mention in despatches. Yippee!

Thanks for the heads-up on the dog programme, will watch it, I think. Just back from walking with my own dogs. Einstein disappeared AGAIN, so my oldie suggestion would be:

Now I have guilt (as our transatlantic cousins would say). I wasn't there, and have been mentioned in dispatches inaccurately, and undeservedly. I feel I've let the side down, and should have tried harder. (Where have I heard that before? Oh, yes, Mr Eckersley, my old gym teacher, when I scored twice in a match, but then missed a penalty for my hat trick)

I listened in, though, and watched what I could online. T'were most interesting.

Aaah, a nice pint of Sandcastles at Dawn or Red Herring and locally produced cheese, chutney and stottie ploughmans or kipper pate or crab overlooking the beach .... is what I'd rather be having but I'll make do with a processed chicken roll and a bag of cheese and onion followed by an instant coffee on the hoof with a quick poop by to see if there's anything going on.

Thanks for the 'welcome backs' (that doesn't sound right).

#45 Shona, I'm also intrigued by the counting buses thing?!

#32 Deebee, sorry to hear you're bunged up but glad to see you seem to be over the worse and are now on the mend. Get yourself off to the Northumberland coast, I can't recommend it highly enough and know once you've been you'll want to return over and over again. I've been going for about 25 years and have seen a lot of changes and huge gain in popularity but it is still such a special place. In fact, Mr and me camped in the dunes on millenium eve - yes 31st December 1999 on the North Sea coast - with our champagne and fireworks to mark the occasion. We drove up from Sheffield (which is where we were living at the time) after work, arrived at about 10.30pm with tent, dog, fireworks, 2 bottles of champagne, inadequate (it turned out) sleeping bags and a wind up torch, walked through the dunes in the pitch black for about 45 minutes to a spot in the middle of nowhere, yards from the sea but slightly sheltered over the dunes, and just got pitched in time for midnight to see the new millenium in. It was certainly memorable and very special and something to tell the kids about - they think we were mad - and blooming cold!

Oh look at me going off on one again, must get on.

I am counting buses and timing them today to complain about the number of buses that journey up my street to turn at a turning point by a bit of waste ground picking no one up and dropping no one off.

My neighbour counted 392 journeys one day. However, my counting is 24 journeys per hour times 17 hours per day = 408 fruitless journeys. So far today, I have seen 2 people get off and 2 people get on. It is ridiculous!

I strongly suspect that asking a bus driver shall reveal the turning point by the bit of waste ground in your street to be the easiest, not to mention safest, place to turn such a long vehicle.

My one and only published picture is from a Franz Ferdinand gig https://www.flickr.com/photos/88293594@N06/8069000723/

Flo - if you dont mind - how can I just post individual photos as you do, rather than effectively linking to a flickr account as I am here?

    #76 Amelia, that's a really good picture!

To post a single picture, right click the FF one and you'll see a variety of sizes....

Click the pic size you want to post, then right click it and you'll see 'properties'

Highlight and copy the 'URL address' and paste it where you want your picture.

Had to come back to apologise to JBG for stealing his thunder. My mensh should really have been his because I only seconded his suggestion.

    Sorry JBG

    Evening all

Missed the show tonight, but seems like it was a decent night for the blog.

#79 Erica - no thunder stolen! Really. The wonderful wonderful thing about the blog is that it's not life-threatening in any way, and the people are so lovely. I don't think I've ever seen anyone getting their knickers in a twist for having songs "stolen" from them.

Thank you Flo, both for the comment and the help. I always love looking at your photos.

#80 JBG - but it is definitely life enhancing

Well done menshees - not many credits tonight but those that were mentionned were mostly bloggers - hooray!

I claim an OSM for "You and me and a dog name Boo" - at least I was on the right track!

We had a visit from Mr Fox tonight - while I was cooking the dinner, Mr said we had a visitor at the back door. When I looked to see who it was, there was a very handsome fox, staring through the glass to see what was going on indoors. Perhaps he could smell the chicken......

He'll have to wait til tomorrow for the scraps which will disappear at a rate of knots, I'm sure!

Late on parade tomorrow - the scales call for the weekly moment of torture ;0) and then I'm off to the dentist in the afternoon for more torture - physical and monetary!

I'll try and pop in, inbetween, to see what the theme for choon-chasing is.

Enjoy the rest of your evening one and all

Another fly-by - choir practice night so will listen to the show tomorrow morning. Congrats to menshees!

Just thought, that if you enjoyed Mr Baumgartner's jump last night and if you like Lego (other plastic building/creating systems available etc) you might like to see this....
