Cheesecloth revival

Simon Mayo|08:10 UK time, Tuesday, 4 September 2012

You know when everyone is browner than you? That moment when you're standing next to colleagues who are fresher and more relaxed than you are? And even though you've had a holiday, it really doesn't feel like it. And Christmas is a long way away? Well that was me yesterday. Matt and Rebecca look chilled and at one with the world, the rest of us look frazzled and crazed. But it is still good to have the team back and raring to go. Or something like that.

Lovely September is looking mighty fine here, a warm autumn is a thing to cherish. We are grateful for every decent day and relish every degree of heat. We know the thick jumpers will be back soon but for now let's sit outside. Picnic, bbq, wear thin cotton items, stroll, swim. Leaf kicking is just around the corner.

Today we welcome Deacon Blue to Drivetime. They have a new album out called The Hipsters and it is their first since 2001. Ricky Ross has been very busy songwriting for the great and good but now the band are back and the single sounds great. They perform at the Elton John piano tonight!

And RESHUFFLE oldies please. CHANGING THINGS AROUND that kind of thing as the PM rearranges his team. Oldies on shuffle.

Have a sparkling, clear-sighted Tuesday. See you after 5

    Morning all

Yesterday was a complete write-off and I don't expect today will be much better. Ah well......

Leaf-kicking? Reminds me of the 'radio address that never was' in The West Wing season 1 with it's "Leaf-peeping? Is that a thing" :)

Anyhoo a couple of quick oldies before I disappear:

The Times They are A-Changin' - Bob Dylan

MOVE OVER DARLING - TRACEY ULLMAN

    THE CHANGINGMAN - Paul Weller

  • Comment number 5.

Morning all. absent yesterday, due to misplaced phone.

Looked at yesterdays blog - most disappointed when I realised that 'To Sir With Love' was a song suggestion and not fan mail!

    Suggestions for today:

ASHTON GARDNER & DYKE - Resurrection Shuffle

    DAVID BOWIE - Changes

THE WHO - Who Are You?

and if, as expected, David Laws is given a new role

    You and I

    It had to be

The standing joke of the year

    You're used to wearing less

And now your life's a mess

    So insecure you see

Take a look at my face

    For the last time

  • Comment number 14.

    Morning all!

Usual business yesterday, with first day back after a week away - plenty of emails PLUS a boring meeting in the arvo which I had to do 'stuff' for.

Anywho, here now, and making the most of it - nice to be back in the fold..

I tweeted NO SUPRISES by Radiohead,

OUT IN THE COLD Carole King - for the dropped folks

    MOVING by La Bush

DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO Diana Ross (employment exchange perchance?)

    and would like to add

PLEASE BE WITH ME by Eric Clapton - words which I am sure the PM uses when he makes 'the' phone calls.

and SITTING, WAITING. WISHING by Jack Johnson - for those who wait by the 'phone all day and DON'T get the call!

Back later, hollimiday pics to sort - Mr e sarcastically said last night 'I'm not sure, but has Southwold GOT a pier?' (I took 200+ pics, many featuring the famous pier...)

  • Comment number 15.

    Mornin all

    PERPETUAL CHANGE - Yes

TIME TO RING SOME CHANGES - The Albion Band

    WE NEVER CHANGE - Coldplay

Can dedicate the latter to those who've refused to be shuffled :-)

    JBG

  • Comment number 20.

Do you listen to Ricky's show on Radio Scotland as well Florence? It's excellent, very much in tune with Bob's show. I think he should be back from the summer break shortly. It's what the iPlayer was invented for - liberating those regional gems so we can all hear them!

I did think the other day I saw the first signs of Autumn, the leaves were beginning to change colour on some of my garden shrubs and trees. What a joy 'Autumn Tints' a good excuse for a walk in the forest.

Anyway, not had much to say so not been blogging, however, that does not mean to say I have not been reading. So far some good ideas for the 'Shuffle' thingy.

    My suggestion:

    Jessie J - Nobody's Perfect

    Tears for Fears - Shout

(Shout, shout, let it all out, these are the things I can do without) I'm sure there will be lots of shouting once the names have been announced!

Time for a coffee and catch up...

Looking forward to Deacon Blue - I'll probably have to "listen at a time more convenient" as Mum is still with us. Enjoyed seeing them at Proms in the Park (was it last year or the year before? - can't remember) and I'm going to see them in Aberdeen in October. Yes I know, I probably could have found a venue a bit nearer to home...

    ;o)

I couldn't watch the Paul O'Grady programme last night. I'm a sucker for anything with a woof and a waggy tail, and from what others have said I'd have probably found myself somewhat misty eyed...

  • Comment number 46.

Oh and in other news, my neighbour who just happens to be a Cabinet minister - I won't say which one, but most of you know roughly in what area of the country I live so it shouldn't be too hard to work out ;o) - had cameras outside his house this morning, presumably waiting for a statement from him. I did think about wandering over with the dog and giving a wave to the BBC Breakfast viewers, but I hadn't done my hair and makeup, so I thought better of it...

A good night for bloggers, so well done Brandon, Gill, Vildeen and Zoe. Deacon Blue are so well-loved after all these years and I really enjoyed their acoustic Dignity!

#68 Shona... it's usually your texts/uncle Tony etc we hear, so it makes a change for mine to be read out ;o) Not having heard anything about McIntosh-Ross since seeing them a couple of years ago, or the three girls of 'God Help the Girl', from Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian's project, it's good to hear that Ricky and Lorraine might resurrect their McIntosh-Ross duo and that Stuart's making his film.

It is a beautiful morning here. We may be only 13 miles from Cambridge, but you can only get to our hamlet on single track roads, and sometimes it feels like 'the middle of nowhere' and that's how I like it! ;-)

Jennie, pleased your latest appointment went well.

That's a shame, MC, I am there on 9th. Lots happening before then but really looking forward to it.

Hi AG. I hope that the gorgeous weather puts everyone in a good mood, ready to soak it all up.

Good morning - beautiful start to the day again - perhaps this is the Indian summer we were promised.

It could also be the Paralympic/Olympic effect - both have had good weather. Perhaps we could do it every year and guarantee good weather every year ;0)

#70 - mobility 'programmes' ?? should read 'problems'! I was obviously tired after long walks around the hospital yesterday! Note to self - must read back before posting!!

    Good Morning All

Fine and dandy weather here today too. It's in our local rag today that the Proclaimers are playing at the castle at New Year.

Jennie, I just wanted to say that I am glad that it all went well yesterday. x

    #88 I'll second that Molly.

Do you think Simon has slept in?

#87 that sounds fab, Shona. They were great at Cambridge Folk Festival. I am seeing them in Aberdeen in November too but there you can't beat the backdrop of the Castle and the quality of sound it creates.

Lovely day here finally - it was grey and manky yesterday while everyone was going on about the weather being fab :-(

Anywho, yes, so, here are some SOUTHWOLD PIER pics

    Good Morning All

No new blog yet? Don't worry, me posting this will probably guarantee its arrival...

Jennie, glad to hear of your good news.

Amelia, you will love the Proclaimers - they do a great live show, very energetic. Their greatest hits album is often on in our house at the moment - we also have a copy of it on the boat.

Lovely pics Suzieeeee - Southwold is one of my very favourite places in the UK.

I don't live in the middle of nowhere - I'm in a village, with lots of country walks nearby but only 10 miles from Cambridge and only an hour into London. The only downside is that I'd love to be nearer to the sea...

Morning all - what a beautiful day.

#66 - Well spotted Amelia - it was me with my 'half price suncream' (was also me last week with the 'sprained not broken' son's ankle.

#77 - I saw The Proclaimers at the Wickham Festival last month. They are terrific value for money, as you get no witty banter (KT Tunstall was also on and could do stand-up) - just one hit after another - enjoy.

Lovely photos Susieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee - I especially like the one taken on the pier, looking along it - very arty!

I don't live in the middle of nowhere - good train links to London - but we hate coming home late in the evenings as the trains are populated by those who have had a ' good time' and want to share it with everyone, or the trains are disrupted by work on the line and buses are used to replace them and it takes forever and a day to get home and it spoils the whole night out.

We do get some 'names' at the Cliffs Pavillion in Southend, but you have to be quick off the mark to get any tickets.

    Morning everyone

Nice and sunny here today but a distinct slight chill in the air. Suzieeee, I love your pics.... did you take any of the beach huts from the other side?

Re where do we all live, I am surrounded on three sides by golden wheat fields, and a stable and 'green' fields with 14 horses and ponies over the side wall and I can be on the beach in two minutes (by car), so the best of both worlds!
