Seaside Special 2

Simon Mayo|08:17 UK time, Wednesday, 8 August 2012

Up early for a wee trip to Weymouth. I think we've been here before. The journey is a beautiful one and when it runs alongside the sea is quite spectacular.

The journey home seems twice as long and thrice as boring. But that's when Rebecca steps up to the plate and organises party games for the whole carriage. Singing songs, telling stories and wearing a variety of costumes, she hosts the train with style and panache.

I'm going to take some stirring Churchillian speeches to perform and maybe take my old unicycle to ride up and down the aisle. And maybe when we get back to London, we'll just stay on the train and wait to go back again. [This man has clearly lost it. Stop him now]

We'll be going sailing and talking to tour medalling and podiuming sailors and reflecting on another extraordinary day in this Olympic games. Having watched all the best bits again and again, I think Sir Chris Hoy is the colossus of the games. So eloquent, so talented, so powerful. And when he lost it on the podium, there can't have been a dry eye in the house.

So let's do TEARS and CRYING and EMOTIONAL OVERLOAD oldies. The competitors, the commentators, the watching fans have all choked up at various times (and you, dear blogger, you too?) so we'll chose the tunes to fit the happy howling.

This journey will be over soon (unlike the Weymouth train) so let's enjoy it while it's here. Have a powerful and inspired Wednesday, see you after 5.

  • Comment number 21.

    Morning All;

Hmmm, my enjoyment of the Olympics has been somewhat soured, by the attitude of those who regard the paralympians as a poor second to what some dub 'The Proper Olympics'. There will be no individual Royal Mail stamps for gold medal winners (due to expected number of gold medallists) I tweeted Simon, to ask if Drivetime would be broadcasting from any of the Paralympic events. He didn't reply, and I'm assuming not, which is a shame (to say the least) after all the coverage there has been in the last couple of weeks.

O.K rant over, I don't expect anyone else to share my sentiments, but there it is.

    Oldie suggestions...

NO WOMAN NO CRY - BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS

CRYING IN THE RAIN - THE EVERLY BROTHERS

  • Comment number 24.

Morning all - what will today bring ? We've broken the abacus trying to keep count.

#10 - Sir Kitt - I've found the 'music played' link deficient (i.e. it doesn' do what it says on the tin)

nadia common madchick - a mensh for you last night for 'One trick pony' - well done and more minor murmurs from Simon about our Olympic names. It's clearly all getting to him.

  • Comment number 25.

    Good morning everyone!

First things first. Simon, thank you for the mention for the Paul Simon suggestion yesterday. I thought that the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band was an absolute shoe-in for Water Paulo - but not so sadly. You wuz robbed, Paul! ;-)

I love the idea of games amongst the Drivetime team on the train journey home. Do you sing 'Oh, you'll never go to Heaven, in a biscuit tin' or is it a little less sedate?

    Crying oldies:

CRY CRY CRY - ROXY MUSIC

CRYING IN THE CHAPEL - ELVIS PRESLEY

CRYING IN THE RAIN - A-HA

    EMOTIONAL RESCUE - ROLLING STONES

DON'T LET THE SUN CATCH YOU CRYING - PAUL CARRACK (from the wonderful 'A Different Hat' album)

OOOOoooh! Mo! #9 G&C -good choice!

  • Comment number 27.

#21 - Zoe - one thing to bear in mind is that the BBC is not the official broadcaster for the Paralympics (at least not on TV - that goes to Channel 4), so that could explain the (lack of) response.

I'm sure C4 will do a fine job of their presentation and we ought to show the same kind of support as for the 'real' Games, but I'm sure we will be suffering from burnout by then.

#27 Half-pass-ley-cat - Ah, yes, I suppose the C4 broadcasting thing is the reason, and I would like to believe that things would be different, if the BBC had broadcasting rights...

I'm not going to labour the point, I think the paralympians do have to play second-fiddle to the "real" Olympians. I may not like it, but then, there's so much in life that upsets me and makes my blood boil, this is just another thing to add to the list.

    LEVEL 42 - EYES WATERFALLING

  • Comment number 58.

Agreed "episodes" is just wrong & please fix the music played thingy. Working fine for other shows.

I really don't like the new jingles. Maybe it will sound less odd once we are back to normal studio shows. Did I hear Simon describing it as "loud & expensive"? I think part of the problem is I watched the clips of the recording of some of the new jingles (not Simon's) & I can't get the images out of my head.

I watched the last episode of Blockbusters last night. I really hope there is a new series. Great entertainment. I particularly liked Simon's reaction to the contestant who spoke to spirits or some such thing.

Congratulations on a lovely mention yesterday Nadia! Pete got one too for Perfect.

We podiumed in the quiz last night. I just about managed to hold back the tears of joy.

I'm on holiday, the sun is shining, this never happens. Sitting in the garden, contemplating a wee walk before lunch.

Now I fancy a red skinned banana, perhaps the kind with custard in the middle, isn't it marvellous what they can grow these days?

Amelia - I'm not keen on the website revamp, or the new jingles either. I don't know why things have to be continually faffed around with. I suppose there's the rubbish about refreshing the brand etc, but it all seems a bit 'money for old rope' to me. And, how come 'new and improved' products are seldom, or never, better than the originals?

Oh dear, I seem to be in a ranty mood today :-/

    Afternoon all

    Far too late probably but....

CRY ONE MORE TIME - Gram Parsons

Can these games keep up this level of achievement right to the wire? Hard to see how.

Laura Trott's my star of the games. How could anyone see her delight on the screen without breaking into a silly grin themselves? Impossible! The air was a shade of blue when the slow traffic aftermath of an accident (no major casualties) meant I got indoors about 90 seconds after she crossed the line yesterday teatime.

Darn that Tony Blair for allowing freedom of information thingys. One has just come in that I need to trawl back 5 years for and I've just had a clear out! Yikes. This could take me 3 years to pull the info together and I only have a week! Plus keep the day job going (oh and blogging of course)
