Poles, pegs and sogginess
Good morning.
A sunny morning and Alan D on the news just now said 'it would remain dry' but I think that can't be right. Water on the brain or something. Child 3 off on a school trip to Legoland and was quite confused at the prospect of what to wear. In the end though the prospect of all those water rides meant that waterproofs won the day and sunblock got forgotten. We shall see.
So child 1 has had his 21st, now wife 1 has her 50th and it's time to party one more time. This weekend sees a clan gathering, speeches, quizzes and assorted merriment before we all collapse in a Roman-esque, post-feast saggy heap. But then we're on holiday, so hooray for that. Around the estate the clear up continues. Streamers, bottles and cake may well be turning up for years to come like relics from a bygone age. It has certainly given the pesky foxes something to worry about; I'm hoping they may decide to go and urinate in someone else's garden.
Glad my 'sexy Larry' voice went down well. I quite enjoyed it myself really. In actual fact, that bit on the Floaters record is quite camp so really I chose the wrong voice. Might play the whole thing today for cpomparison.
Nigel cooks quail with grapes and ginger tonight (I know) and songs please on the subject of CAMPING. As the holiday mentions really start flooding in we need to recognise the selfless heroism of all those intrepid campers who are still setting off for their hols with tent/caravan/campervan at the ready. Can be great, can be a waterlogged nightmare. Tunes please!
Have a sunkissed and warming Thursday. See you after 5.

A good time was had last night. However... (grumpy old woman alert) the concert started half an hour later than the advertised time (why do they always do that? downright rude in my book), the floor by my seat was sticky due to someone at a previous gig spilling their drink and it not being cleared up, and when did it become acceptable to have digital cameras and mobile phones snapping away throughout? In my day (!) photography was strictly prohibited. It was quite a distraction - one girl in front of me seemed to spend the whole evening looking at her camera screen - I can't imagine she would have got much out of the event itself, although she must have some great photos to post on her FB page...

You may as well stay at home than watch it all through a view finder. I love taking photos at gigs but only do it for a few songs at the beginning and end. I have to fight the urge to show people that their camera’s flash can be set to OFF and not auto, all the flash does is annoy everyone anyway.
My biggest moan is reserved for venues that have a complete no photos policy. If a particular artist doesn’t want photography that is fine and I would always respect them, and obviously no flash photograph is just common sense. But what makes me mad is gigs where I know the artist is happy for photos (because they have asked for them to be posted to their website) and I have taken photos of them countless times before, where you get over-zealous usherettes madly shining their torches at anyone who dares to use a camera. Rather more irritating and disturbing than flash-less photo taking.
Maybe I was spoiled when I lived in Yorkshire, lots of lovely small music venues where there were no daft rules.

Lovely to hear everyone's gig stories. I remember getting soaked at a Midnight Oil gig in Berlin one time (didn't spoil our enjoyment). We returned the following evening to see Paul Simon and had a wonderful evening - not a spot of rain to spoil proceedings.
Back to paperwork :(

I'm up for a game while our leader is away, especially if there are going to be fewer of us around, as it will help to keep things ticking over. Will have a think about what we could play.

Last time I was in this hotel I got food poisoning and spent three days on the loo with Keith Richards and John martyn (as it were... in fact, those were the two biographies I downloaded onto a Kindle to keep me going). What an odd blog today! Is everyone on the other one pretending to be the real people on this one - blogterlopers? It's far too late to suggest any tunes obviously, but if I had I would have suggested one that reminds me of a few camping trips in the past, and revisits chat of a couple of days ago...

I have been listening a lot in the car before I came away to the Vol One of Anthology, and the quality of the vocals - especially on the rockers, particularly Long Tall Sally (which was Paul) - was fabulous, from all of the Fabs. Lennon's voice on songs like this always makes me think of a paper cut - dunno why!

I note from some of the comments of the previous few days that there are a few cycling fans amongst the bloggists? I know "my stories" get a little protracted sometimes, but I was thinking of this earlier... In 2001 I was in Chicago for the Book Expo America book fair - America's big international book fair. I had been made redundant the year before, and this was my first visit as a newly self-employed bod. It was nice to be bumping into lots of old friends, and as I wandered through the exhibition centre I saw ahead of me a guy called Stuart, who had worked for me for a few years previously before he too was made redundant.
Stuart was a nice guy and it was really nice to see him. He was chatting to some bloke when I went up and shook hands and said hello. We chatted for a couple of minutes, and then Stuart introduced me to his friend, who smiled broadly and nearly took my hand off. "Nice to meet you" I said, but in all honesty hadn't caught the guy's name. So we chatted for a few minutes, and the guy said he was going to go get a coffee and he'd be back in a few minutes... I assumed it was some colleague of Stuart. "You were very cool about that, Bertie and Baxter," said Stuart - "I thought you'd be gobsmacked, being into your sport and stuff!". "Why - who was it?" "That was Lance Armstrong" said Stuart. I was still none the wiser! Never heard of him. Stuart's company (who published "Men's Health Magazine" were doing a fitness book with him, and he was hanging out for the day with Stuart shaking hands with American booksellers in an attempt to whet their appetites...
So - my story of "how I met Lance Armstrong and didn't know who the devil he was!"
A bientot...
