Zoe, in answer to your question about fandom, since Donny Osmond (when I was the tender age of about 12/13), and perhaps Bryan Ferry in my teens, I can't say that I'm here because I'm a fan of Simon in that sense. I don't recall being so in the 1980's/90's either when he was with Radio One. I started blogging here when Chris was on Drivetime, and got to 'know' some great people who all shared a common interest in good music. The humour and conversation, has kept me here ever since. And Simon? Well, he's a particularly talented radio presenter, who knows his stuff and doesn't forget his audience, including the blogpoppets here. That's what I like and appreciate about him.

Hoffs - Thank you for your reply :) I think many of us, me included, joined this blog because of our mutual appreciation for Simon, and the show. But what has kept us coming back day after day, is all the other bloggers, and their witty, informative and occasionally challenging banter :))



Katy - It's funny really, because I liked famous folk, music, movies, tv stuff before, but when I finally got connected to the World Wide Web, I found that it became a more intense experience, if that makes sense? I didn't really know what to expect from the Internet back then, and my first 'intense' experience of getting involved in a fandom, has soured me on them ever since.



I think it's because it's so easy to chat with a number of people, all at the same time, who share your enthusiasm for whatever/whoever. It tends to be that you feed each others addiction, so to speak, and you end up getting deeper involved with things than you otherwise might have done back in the days when fanclubs didn't have the level of connectivity that they have now. I've always been wary of putting people on pedestals though, because no-one can ever live up to that kind of elevation. But this is where I found fandoms to be scary, almost cult-like places, in most cases. No dissent is allowed or tolerated! You must love everything that the person etc does, and support them no matter what, and this is where it all came apart for me... I'm far too much of a cynic for that! :D

Katy - your post yesterday about putting people on pedestals. Erm, I have in my younger years possibly popped up a couple of small pedestals. The first was Morten Harket who was knocked off by Jonny Depp. The longest survivor was, wait for it......













Alan Rickman.

Part 1



Interesting discussion about fansites! Absolutely agree Zoe #44 and others here and on yesterday's blog. I've been involved in a few fansites - Level 42, Top Gear, also dipped my toe in a Jason Isaacs one... but they were very different from this blog. They are a good place to meet likeminded people and chat about your common interest. But they also tend to attract the more obsessive types - I have met a few of these, and they can be rather scary! Having said that, I made some good friends on the Top Gear site who I am still in touch with.

The blog, on the other hand, belongs to Simon and it only exists because he continues to write each day - even when he's feeling ill, bless him! He's not really the type of celebrity to attract the more intense kind of fanship who congregate on fan sites - actually I don't really think of him as a 'celebrity' at all (a word I dislike). The people who follow him do so because they admire his style of presenting - you can't really put him in the same category as a footballer or an actor.

I didn't 'join' the blog because of any feelings of 'fandom'. I listen to DT and while cooking the dinner and was intersted when Simon mentioned the blog and wondered what it was like so I found it and lurked for a while and then plucked up the courage to join in. Any overbearing feelings of fandom would have put me off, I think. I don't feel that Simon expects us all to be loyal to his show and his show only, every night, come what may - we all have real lives to live, as well as the fun element of choon/mensch chasing.



All these stars/celebrities are only human beings and have to do the same things we do - they may have talents we don't have but then the same may be said of us. Some 'fanclubs' seem to be more like organised stalking to me.



That's my tuppence worth...

Ps. Mini H worried that the police are going to come and arrest me as he thinks that you can only have a day off school if you are ill, which technically, he isn't. Poor boy is suffering from really bad growing pains at night at the moment and is awake a great deal as a result. So I kept him at home today to catch up on sleep and he didn't wake up until just after 10am. Unheard of! Any tips on how to deal with growing pains would be gratefully received. The other boys also had them, but not nearly as badly.

Re fandom - I've also dabbled in a couple of fandoms and find this very different; much more easy going and of course, much more wide-ranging. Having said that my first foray into fandom came on the old BBC Cult messageboards and I made a number of friends who are still 'real-life' friends 12+ years later. I never got into 'excessive' fandom and therefore although I've seen the less savoury side of it, I've never really been part of it. I've never really understood why it gets so serious - if you don't enjoy the fandom, why be part of it!



Anyhoo - this continues to be a lovely place.



Best wishes to Simon for a full and speedy recovery. He's been holding up well on air on Drivetime, Radio5 (yes - I am 30-something! I didn't really expect it to be read out otherwise I would have made more effort to be witty and erudite) and Graham's show, but sometimes you need to give-in and take a few days to recover.



I'm sure I've missed various other bits of conversations so I hope everyone is well.

#68 A_G well you were witty and erudite enough for me to remember it! I am all for hosting the Irish chapter of the wittertainment dating club, I've just never been brave enough to email in and say so.



Simon has read out a few things of mine, including that tweet and a Friday R2 email (he played the Muppet song for me, well my friend, but she thought I was calling her a muppet so maybe the least said about that the better) They have all been written quickly without much though. Sometimes spontaneous is best, anything I have tried too hard over just comes across as ponderous I think.

Well, my best made plans to rejoin the choon chasing and banter throng this morning were truly scuppered by my joining Simon in his sick bed... not literally you understand! That really would be an 'oo-er' moment ;)



It seems that my very brief return to the blogosphere last night coincided with some lingering germs in these 'ere parts (not that I'm entirely blaming Lord Ammo, of course!) and I spent the whole night being spectacularly ill.
