Nearly done

Simon Mayo|09:21 UK time, Friday, 29 June 2012

Yes yes it's Friday and another week done. Distinctly dodgy one health wise but I'm not sure you'd have noticed that; no passing presenters hauled in to fill in and no need to resort to extra long songs just yet.

Very short blog yesterday and far more posts. Hmmm. Maybe I should just write less and see what happens? My publisher might not want me to draw too many conclusions from that...

So 2 kids abed, one kid to school and we set off on the trip towards the ARF with a jolly jaunt to 5Live. We're into the season of movie show disruption however. Today we do the show live-streamed from 2 for an hour, it'll be a podcast from 4 and broadcast at 9. I hope that sounds clear. The main radio airwaves (and digital equivalents) are needed for the tennis and who can argue with that when you get matches like Nadal vs Rosol yesterday? Sportsmen and women rarely get days when everything they try comes off but the fifth set for the Czech seemed to be precisely that. In the zone indeed.

So then we need one of your fine choices to kick the Drivetime all requester off, a song to explode out of the radio and batter everyone into submission. Gentle and subtle is not quite what we are after.

Have a nifty and elegant Friday, see you at 5 (and online on 2 etc).

Songs to explode out of the radio? Any of the following would make my (last) day:

Katy - Impressive list keeping again, from the previous blog. I'm still not keen on the current playlist A,B or indeed C, I wouldn't seek any of them out if they weren't foisted on me radio-wise, on a daily basis!

Good morning Simon, DT Team and fellow blogsters,

Glad that the week is ending better healthwise than it started. BTW, I enjoy reading your daily rambling musings. I think we should set a minimum word limit - your publisher would agree, I'm sure! ;-)

I think you'll find that the following ARFO suggestions are neither gentle or subtle:

ONE WAY OR ANOTHER - BLONDIE

THE POWER OF LOVE - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS

SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY - FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS

ROCK THE CASBAH - THE CLASH

I shall try and endeavour to have a nifty Friday, not sure about the elegant bit though - not with the hayfever that has suddenly gripped me. I am sporting a 'nice' red nose and seem to be prone to loud involuntary bursts of sneezing. A delicate petal I am not! ;-)

Morning all - again - did post earlier on yesterday's blog because I didn't think I would be around much today.

Mr Mayo, may I congratulate you on reaching Friday in one piece (ish). From the fab shows that you and the team have presented this week, no-one would have known that anything was wrong. I hope that you will be able to relax with your family at the weekend (As the Eagles would say 'Take it Easy') and will, by Monday, be back into tip toparoo condition.

Sadly, sports day has been postponed. Much sadness for Mini Hoffs. Typically, as the decision was made, the sun came out. Mini Hoffs now in the classroom for the day and Mister Hoffs and I have a whole day ahead of us and a picnic to eat.....

Pleased that Simon has managed to survive until the end of the week and I wish him a pleasant, healthy weekend!

I also hate that Stooshe song and looking at Katy's playlist on the previous page, like Zoe, I'm also not keen on most of the songs listed, but there is one I like on the 'A' list that Ken Bruce plays every day but I have never heard Simon play it -- Gossip's 'Move In The Right Direction'.

I thought about Katy this week when on several days, for the second song of the programme, Simon played either Emeli Sandé or Amy Macdonald, both of which have been played endlessly and surely more times than others on the list!

I'll polish the ARFO crown this afternoon, so it's nice and sparkly, ready to hopefully hand over to a blogpoppet. I wasn't going to choose a song for today, but it's difficult not to join in....

Katy - on the subject of playlists I'm a fence-sitter, I see that it helps to have a foundation of new music from which to base all the rest on but also that it does from time to time expose us to stuff we don't want to hear on an a-list rotation. I've high-horsed about this before but the charts always used to form the basis of radio 1 & 2's output but the glue that held all this together was TOTP, the absence of which must be frustrating the hell out of record companies (why else did Cowell want to buy the name?). In addition the charts are mainly R1 playlisted songs as that is where the downloading demographic listens to its music - I download about three songs a month but mainly oldies I hear on R2 or the odd chart newcomer - generally I wait for the latest Now CD. We won't get a 'proper' chart until the current 30 something downloaders have moved onto R2.

#7 & #8 - Tortie & Madchick - I think I prefer that version of the lyrics too, and John Simm is a cutie, if a bit on the short side... I saw him onstage in Hamlet, and although I expected him to be on the small side, he was almost pocket-sized!

I don't really have anything much to add to the discussion about playlists. I agree with KatyMatey #15 that there seem to be far too many younger female artists getting airplay, and quite frankly they are all much of a muchness as far as I can tell... However, it is what it is - we can moan about it, in fact as the target audience I think we should if we are less than impressed with the playlist - but I'm not convinced that anything much will change...

#1 and #20 Am I being slower than a slow thing at half speed...? Do you two know each other in 'real life'?? Small world indeed!

  • Comment number 32.

Bingo - sometimes I think it might be far more worthy if extremely wealthy celebs - like John Bishop and David Walliams [I cite them because of recent high profile - but we all know there are others] - just cut out the middleman and make a personal donation of a million or so - instead of doing something physical and telly-worthy and keep banging on about it so that thousands of people who don't really have any cash to spare are shamed into making a donation.

Once again - it's the relatively poor who are dipping into their meagre coffers in order to boost charity funds which are falling short because of decisions made by wealthy and powerful people.

Chris Evans Drive & Dine is different. Those bidders are wealthy people - they're just lucky enough to have the choice of their 'reward' for such public donations.

  • Comment number 40.

#23 & #32 Bingo & Katy - I suppose one could argue, as I have done myself, that as long as charities are getting the money, to continue their good works, then it is by the by if some get knighthoods and O.B.Es on the strength of it. I can see that what the likes of David Walliams have done, is inspirational to a lot of folk, and a lot of money was raised in the process. But as Katy points out, many of these celebs are in a position to donate £1million+ without breaking a sweat.

I know for a fact that famous folks' PR people, keep them informed on what are the "hot" charities i.e the ones they should be seen to be supporting, and put in appearances for charity dinners etc. Again one could say, what does it matter so long as the charity gets the money and has it's profile raised. But it seems a bit tacky that charities should be en vogue, like shoes or dresses.

I have taken issue, with the comic relief organisers, over charity auctions. The Radio 2 (ironically titled) 'Things That Money Can't Buy' charity auction & Dine & Disco falls into the same category. I know they wish to raise the largest sum of money (as was put to me in defence of the Comic Relief auctions) but these things are only in the reach of those who have thousands of pounds to spare. In this case, why not just have a charity dinner for the rich folks, or put them on eBay with a minimum starting price? I suggested that a few items, in the charity auction, be at least put to some kind of raffle i.e you call a number charging £1 or such, and your name is put into the raffle to win the auction prize. I think this has been done, on a very limited basis, but I'm sure they could raise as much, if not more, by doing that.

#30 Tortie - I am short-sighted after all! ;D I was on the front row, and he looked pretty small to me. I think it didn't help, that one of the jackets he was wearing looked about 2 sizes too big for him!

I can see the argument for celebrities just giving away money to charity but for me that misses two key issues. One, the charity misses out on using the celebrities brand (it is a dog eat dog world out there) to raise the profile of their charity. The second is the human aspect. I was lucky enough to run the New York marathon last year for charity. Rubbish time but I was really delighted with the support I got and the feeling of achievement I felt when I crossed the finish line cannot be underestimated. Only the celebrities can know if they are using charity to promote the charity or their brand. Let's hope their heart's are true.

#playlist - There will never be a consensus on playlist entries, I suppose, but I do agree with comments, both ^^^^, and yesterday regarding overplaying. Turning a track into an earworm doesn't necessarily make it good, in my opinion. The Stooche track, for example, was one I originally didn't mind (not outstanding, nothing new, but non-offensive, musically). The high repeat rate on R2 had me paying more attention to the lyrics and forming an opinion similar to those ^^^^. There have been other songs that I really liked on the first few plays, but the overplaying would usually put me off.

Ultimately, though, it's not 'radio coffeeBuzz' and there's no obligation to listen so I listen to the bits I like, keeping my mind's ear open for new 'likes'.

I get the feeling the presenters are just tolerating some of the playlist stuff they have to play. I don't detect a lot of excitement around the time of the playlist song at 6:10pm ish.

But the converse, Gretchen Peters seemed to be saying when she was here that it was massive to have one of the tracks from her album on the playlist. And I suppose if the odd gem makes it onto the list and gains awareness among listeners other than those who listen to Bob, then maybe it achieves something worthwhile.

There's clearly a lot of concern in the musicians' community at the way things are. At the John Hiatt gig the other night he made reference to having spotted someone with their iPad pointing at the stage "filming" the gig. He said "if you could just put it up on a site with, say, 5 million hits. From young people. So if you could sneak it alongside some Dubstep, that would be good".

Then with reference to his next release in September...." you'll be able to find it....well, I don't really know where you can find them these days. I guess there are still a few independent stores. And it'll be on download...for free. Just join Spotify"

Great singers, songwriters and musicians are making hardly anything from their music. And when they express concern, media bloggers tell them they need to realise that their product is no longer worth $5.

I find that really sad as I don't see how music can survive if the artist's work isn't worth anything financially. Will we be left with a diet of Cowell-backed stuff and the last few remaining acts that can fill stadiums? A horrible thought.

I forgot to say earlier: sorry to hear you're still not feeling great Simon. You've done a marvellous job this week and no-one was any the wiser. I hope a relaxing weekend does the trick.

Did anyone else see Nadal v Rosol last night? I was flicking back and forwards to the football, but in the end the tennis was just so jaw-dropping that I couldn't tear myself away. Incredible play from Rosol.

Re Twilight etc - the whole feminist argument about it has always seemed flawed from the start to me. It's actually not terribly different from a whole lot of other YA romance out there - and once you add in the vampire aspect then the morals or otherwise of the story become far too confused. I liked Twilight well-enough, not great, but perfectly fine. I haven't read "50 Shades of Grey" yet, can't decide whether "posh-prawn" (just in case there's mods around) is my cup of tea of not. For the record, I have nothing against low-class-prawn!

  • Comment number 52.

#51 I thought Nadal showed his class at the end as well. He must have been totally gutted, but still stopped to sign autographs as he was leaving the court. Impressive ambassador for his sport.

#20 Paisley_cat - 1st July that was a long long time ago and your memory was always better than mine. But I do remember Southport and

'NOT' THE TIMES (as well as the outrageous 70p cover charge)

#31 DeeBee - you are spot on as ever!

I was going to post about playlists and I remember Nick Berry 'Every loser wins' losing a certain Mr Grundy his job when he refused to play it when it was on the playlist.

    Hello again.

    Back for the chatter...

My neighbour said to me a while ago that she was getting fed up with some of the music on Radio 2 because it didn't appeal to her age group (70+). Most of the programmes with content she likes have been taken off and replaced with more 'modern' music. I got to thinking about the more elderly listeners and wondered what on earth they make of CE, for example, when they have been used to Sir Tel and more 'gentle' presenters. I know things must change but as our elderly population increases, should they not be considered too and not fobbed off with one or two programmes on late at night when they have probably gone to bed!

    And Stoosh.........:0(((

  • Comment number 56.

#54 - 'NOT' THE TIMES I wish I knew what had happened to that. It disappeared some long time ago. Noel Edmonds everywhere. And he's STILL on TV now. Blue Peter's changed a bit though.

#31 - DeeBee no fooling you.

  • Comment number 57.

#52 Ken - I totally agree, very classy, especially as he was incredibly grumpy throughout the match and had a permanent sneer on his face. He is a great ambassador and sportsman. As a Djokovic fan I wasn't too sad to see him go though - it makes life interesting!

    Hi Simon and everyone.

Hope you get to feel 100% after the weekend Simon, although one could not tell you have been poorly this week, what a trooper!

Thank you for my mention last night for Lying Eyes and congrats to fellow menshees Zoe and Billie.

    Hows about:

    1. GENO - Dexys Midnight Runners

    2. RUNAROUND SUE - Dion

    3. BEDS ARE BURNING - Midnight Oil.

Finally, as the 2nd tune played on a Friday is always the muppet toon manamaman, is this an ARSO ( All Request Second Opener) ?!! Just a thought!

    Must jump back on it

    Have a nice afternoon

    On the charity discussion:

I have a couple of friends who run charities. They are always desperately trying to think of fundraising ideas. If they could get a celebrity to endorse their charity, I'm sure they would jump at the chance, whatever the celeb's motivation was. As long as it isn't actually illegal then surely the end justifies the means. I wouldn't begrudge the recipients of donations from the likes of Children in Need and Comic/Sport Relief a penny of the money they receive. And in these belt-tightening times, I find it quite salutory that people are still prepared to give generously to such causes.

#13 - KatyM - Stooshe (sp?) AAaaarrgghhhhh. It makes me really cross when I hear it. I can't even explain why I don't like it at all - just don't like any of it, all of the time. Grrr.

Shona - thought you'd like to know, I offered my husband a red banana after lunch today and he gave me a very strange look in return....

If it was a three word Friday, mine would be: Bought Pink Shoes.

Just booking flights, how can they charge £12 to check in ONLINE. If they had added the cost to the flights in the first place I wouldn't be ranting .... now they want another £7 to choose a seat, not a special seat, just ANY seat (it is a 45 minute flight I don't care where I sit) now a £5 booking fee or more with a credit card.

I know it is always the same but just needed to vent ....

  • Comment number 77.

#70 Larmer joy. OH working there - hence tickets.

Yeah - Slebs and lifts. Seems they can 'lift' or 'tuck' everything except neck and hands.

  • Comment number 85.

#77 - KatyM - have a good time at the Larmer Tree - hopefully good weather for you. Have always wanted to go - maybe next year when Mini-H is a bit older.

Congrats to King Lenny Dirk Thrust-Law on the ARFO.

Have good weekends all. See you soon x

Did you hear "Twilight" Billie? Chris Tarrant played it as his penultimate tune today! Not much chance for the ARFO then, I thought.

  • Comment number 87.

#78 Ken - Yes indeed - that's the End Of The Road Festival [also at Larmer] end of August - line up includes John Grant AND Alabama Shakes. Hope to get there. It's barely half an hour's drive.

In the meantime - we're doing this - in 12 days or so ..

#85 Hoffs - sorry meant to say earlier - hope Mr Hoffs gets the thumb sorted immediately.

As for Larmer Tree - many of our friends have taken their offspring from a very early age - it's such a family friendly festival. However. the cunningly planned dedicated youngsters areas keeps the ki .., baby goats, wonderfully occupied and well away from those of us who are child - free. Not keen on the Creche masquerading as a Field style of festival where the pesky blighters roam free range and weave in and out of your legs in the beer tent.

    Evening All!

Superb ARFO for today! Welldone to Dirk - sorry - King Lenny! I curtsy!

When I posted @#133 last night - it wasn't my intention to stir up Stooshe (sp?) rage. I just said "I dislke this song!" Ha!

#86 Jennie - I didn't catch CT - but it's Sal who is the ELO Twilight fan not me. Thanks anyway.

    Hi LilacBlue!

    Interesting discussions about charity fund-raising.

  • Comment number 90.

#89 - I actually said "dislike" - not "dislke"! Ha!

  • Comment number 91.

Sorry Billie! Keep up my standard of getting names wrong!

So ... Sal, did you hear Chris Tarrant play "Twilight" today, just before the ARFO, so you nearly made it!

  • Comment number 93.

Hadn't realised they had two different festivals at Larmer.

One of the gigs I was going to next week has been rescheduled to November at a different venue. Unspecified "situation beyond their control relating to recording of the new album". I guess that means they either haven't got it finished in time or the record company didn't like it and want changes. Hmm.

Have a good evening and weekend all.

  • Comment number 95.

Sorry I've not been around much today - it has been a funny old day and with a trip to the hairdresser at 5pm, I missed an hour of the show but congratulations to King Lenny all the same.

Hoffs, LOL at Mr Hoffs giving you a funny look about a red banana. Hope his thumb gets better and he gets out of hospital soon. It sounds a sore one.

Time to relax tonight and Indian Take Away ordered. Up tomorrow at 5am to wave Mr W off on his travels for the day ;(

But hope you all have a great weekend and no doubt I'll be pooping on now and again;)

  • Comment number 96.

#88 - Katy - I agree with you, which is why we haven't ventured there before now. May be even a better idea to go just with our two older boys. Just something we have always wanted to do and now its not far away and the posters are everywhere, its even more enticing!

#95 - Shona - like the hair-do! Enjoy your take-away and hope you manage to hop back into bed when Mr W has departed.

Mr H back. Not broken, just badly strained so all strapped up. Probable ligament damage. Apparently it might take up to 5 weeks to get better. Its his writing hand too. Not good, but at least not broken.

Just saw a tweet from PSL who is making pizza and dancing to Otis Redding - sounds like a good plan....

    Hi! Me again!

Mr. BP is just finishing off one of his "signature dishes" - Ha! - which is Cauliflower Cheese/Ham/Pasta Bake. LOVE it!

It's my Birthday next week - same day as Jennie - I've been given an early present - he does this - the sheet music for the keyboard for Meatloaf's CD "Bat Out of Hell". So tonight I have played "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad" - rather well for the first time if I may say so myself. But I just skriked at the lyrics -

Baby we can talk all night

But that ain't gettin us nowhere

I told you everything I possibly can

There's nothing left inside of here

And maybe you can cry all night

But that'll never change the way I feel

The snow is really piling up outside

I wish you wouldn't make me leave here

I poured it on and I poured it out

I tried to show you just how much I care

I'm tired of words and I'm too hoarse to shout

But you've been cold to me so long

I'm crying icicles instead of tears

And all I can do is keep on telling you

I want you, I need you

But-there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you

    Now don't be sad

'Cause two out of three ain't bad

    Now don't be sad

'Cause two out of three ain't bad

You'll never find your gold on a sandy beach

You'll never drill for oil on a city street

I know you're looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks

But there ain't no Coup de Ville hiding at the bottom

    Of a Cracker Jack box

    I can't lie, I can't tell you that I'm something I'm not

    No matter how I try

I'll never be able to give you something

Something that I just haven't got

*****There's only one girl I'll ever love

And that was so many years ago

And though I know I'll never get her out of my heart

    She never loved me back

    Oh I know*****

I remember how she left me on a stormy night

She kissed me and got out of our bed

And though I pleaded and I begged her not to walk out that door

She packed her bags and turned right away

And she kept on telling me

    She kept on telling me

    She kept on telling me

I want you, I need you

But there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you

    Now don't be sad

'Cause two out of three ain't bad

I want you, I need you

But there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you

    Now don't be sad

'Cause two out of three ain't bad.

Baby we can talk all night

But that ain't getting us nowhere -
