If music be the food of love...
Hooray for Monday, St George, the rain and the cold. The new week lies ahead and as we turn the central heating up another notch, we are planning a top-notch week here. How is the blog behaving now? Have all glitches been fixed? How would you rate your user experience? Hoping the news is good but please do tell...
Chris has just been relaying his weekend near-purchase of a fire engine and I am struggling to match that. I did a supermarket order and nearly bought a large jar of curry paste doesn't really have the same ring to it really. Even if it would have been the world's best curry. We had a full house with all family members present and correct. Meals were eaten, homework was tackled and Homeland was watched. And no fire engines at any stage. Not even close.
Today we have the lovely Louis Theroux with us after 6. He has a 2 part programme on what he calls 'extreme love'. The first part was on autism and this week's is about dementia. He says the 2 programmes are amongst the best he's done and on the basis of this weeks episode, he's right. Thoroughly recommended and Louis will explain more tonight.
And tunes today please for the BARD on WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S BIRTHDAY (and death day also. Plenty to go at really!
Have a comfortable and realistic Monday, see you after 5

So Shakespeare it is then, I had to cover off King Henry iv part i for English Literature 'O' Level after having a taster for Shakespeare by reading Romeo and Juliet and The Merchant of Venice. On the subject of Shakespeare, if anyone ever has the chance to see the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School perform a Shakespeare play, then I would definitely recommend they take it. They travel around, usually to schools, performing specific Shakespeare plays in a totally unique way in little over an hour, but still using the correct Shakespearean language. It is a brilliant introduction to Shakespeare for children whilst at the same time, keeping the adults interested! This year, we saw Twelfth Night which was brilliant. My abiding memory, however, was of Hamlet, last year, with an actor speaking the 'Alas Poor Yorick' words in the style of Eric Morecambe. Obviously not highbrow RSC stuff but definitely something that children and teenagers can remember.

Looking forward to hearing Louis Theroux on tonight's show, I thought his 'Extreme Love' documentary about autism was very well done, and I also highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know what life is like for families with severely autistic children. I could see so much of my family's lives on screen, especially the mother who said that it was heart breaking. That's how I feel, autism breaks my heart in so many different ways every single day. I love my boys to pieces, but if there was a cure, I would not hesitate to sign up for it.

#23 Hoffs - agree. Seems like it would be a real no-no for the youngsters, but after dragging them kicking and screaming to a performance, they've always enjoyed it. We've been to a few of the performances held at National Trust properties - all adds to the atmosphere having a picnic watching a very stripped down Macbeth performed on the lawn at night with a floodlit gothic pile in the background, and the wind and rain lashing in on an August evening. That's how they did it back in the day at the Globe - tankards of mead in the audience, and gnawed bones and pieces of fruit thrown on stage at the baddies!

#44 FW Alice - No, it wasn't just you, I found the finale of True Blood S4 to be distinctly underwhelming too. I was disappointed with S4 as a whole, if the TV show had stuck closer to the books, like Game of Thrones, it would be so much better IMHO. I used to love True Blood, but I'm only tuning in for Alexander Skarsgard now! I see that S5 starts in the US in June (the 10th to be precise) like I said, I will watch because I still love Eric, Pam, Jason and Lafayette, I just hope S5 is better than S4.
On the Extreme Love Autism documentary - When that mother said that the future for all of our severely autistic children is residential care, that is the truth, sadly. There will come a day when, through us being too old/ill, or our children getting too physically strong for us to cope with, they will have to go into residential care, because they will never reach the point of being able to take care of themselves. That fact breaks my heart more than any other.
We don't have to call 999 here to get that help, thank goodness, it's all done mainly through social services. That's who we had our meeting with this morning.
Sorry for the serious stuff, I wouldn't have mentioned any of it if not for LT being on the show tonight. I don't like to go on about the autism side of my life on here, as a rule.

#60 - Zoe, there were very few bright spots to S4 but the finale just about took the biscuit. I mean at the beginning we had Tara saying she wanted to be on that porch wi' Sookie so you just knew that summat was gonna happen to her. Then we had Tara finding Jesus and immediately jumping to the conclusion that it was Lafayette 'what had done it' and that he was taken over by Marnie. That was sloppy by anyone's standards. How on earth did Lafayette manage to chain TWO vamps, at night, to a bonfire by him/herself!?!? I could go on but I shan't. Suffice to say, it wasn't good.

Got to share. Some weeks ago, we ordered 5 water butts from the garden centre. They duly arrived and Ziggy installed them. It then turned out that one of the water butts had a leak so off I went to the garden centre who promised a replacement. An hour ago, the phone rang:
Me: Good morning, Alex-Girl speaking
Caller: This is the garden centre. Are you the lady with the split butt?
Me: (hysterical laughter)
Still giggling now!

*Although I did feel a bit sorry for him when someone in the 3rd row shouted "bring back Jon Anderson" right before the opening notes of the second song. Although that feeling disappeared when they played "..And You and I" and he wasn't Jon Anderson :-)

Chuckling at Alex's split butt ... thanking Flo for the World Party link [such a good song! - surely someone here will hate it :^)] ... and now feeling brave enough to wade in with my song dislikes without offending anyone.
Despite my mother's and I suspect other mothers' caution that ".. if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all .." I had to really button it earlier when Shona said she was going to use *that* track with Heather Small for her powerpoint presentation.
Tangentially, the only jarring note of 'Miranda' [the TV series] was when her assistant sang *that* line and held up a placard of HS's face.
Quite why this should drive me to screeching distraction is a mystery, but I did note that on many forums at the time, others found that part of the show equally annoying.

Ooh Jennie - I moved my chilli, pepper and tomato seedpots into the kitchen. HUGE excitement yesterday when I saw a tiny tomato seedling emerge! Thank you for the advice!
I can confirm that the poorly butt has been removed and replaced by one that is not split and has no leakage. Mr P much relieved - he was rushing out to purchase a large pack of Tena lady products (other incontinence devices available). Still chuckling. Also slightly worried about next time I go to the garden centre - will I forever be known as "the lady with the split butt"?
I have considered the Worst Song. I eliminated the obvious (Joe Dolce, Renee & Renato, Brotherhood of Man) and have plumped for:
Florence & The Machine - You've Got the Love
Reason? She has murdered a cracking song, managed to get rid of every bit of goodness in it and turn it into a banshee wail of despair.

Can anyone explain to me how micro-chipping puppies is going to help curb dangerous dogs? People who own such dogs and the purposes for which they have them, are hardly going to go to the vets and pay to have them chipped are they?
Is it me or am I missing something?

My choice of worst song (in the whole of today):
Camouflage - Stan Ridgeway
I think that's in no small part due to it being overplayed by a former colleague through tinny PC speakers in a large open-plan office.
Additionally, the lyrics are just so cheesy.
I made a decision a few years back that disliking "anything by " just wouldn't do and that I'd try to judge every song on its own merit.
So far I have struggled to keep to that!

I think the idea behind micro-chipping isn't so much to trace the breeding stock, but to provide a vehicle for prosecuting the breeders of non-licensed animals.
Having no such legislation here (in Scotland) makes a bit of a mockery of the system, I feel though.

Am attempting to write lyrics to some tunes OH's new band have laid down. Aiming for the sparse-yet-meaningful 'brevity being the soul of wit' style of wordage. Love most of Squeeze's lyrical content - but for a great story well told, don't think I could better the following:
Bus stop, wet day, she's there, I say
Please share my umbrella
Bus stop, bus goes, she stays, love grows
Under my umbrella
All that summer we enjoyed it
Wind and rain and shine
That umbrella, we employed it
By August, she was mine
