"I don't remember yesterday. Today it rained."*

Simon Mayo|09:18 UK time, Friday, 27 April 2012

Morning all. Busy day here, busy on the blog, all good with the world (apart from all those things which manifestly aren't).

All this 70's chat has been good stuff. I tend to side with the 'it really wasn't like that' camp. If you were a teenager in the 70's it was a time of excitement, colour and opportunity- like any peacetime decade for any teenager. The decades never fit neatly into the journalistic compartments they are required to but it will never stop them trying. Having said that, as some of you have pointed out, Johnnie Walker's 70's show is terrific stuff and a great Sunday afternoon fixture.

Meantime, it is a 2 show day with show 1 coming live from the 02 in Greenwich with our guest Mr Robert Redford. Yes really. What a star! He had quite a good 70's all things considered (and 60s and 80s etc) He is launching the Sundance Festival in the UK and seems to have an undimmed enthusiasm for film making. He's showcasing indie cinema of course but is about to act and direct again and that smile still seems to working its charm...I've decided to wear a new shirt just for him. The only problem is, he might be late. Apparently his time-keeping is not great and we're expecting him at 3.30. Don't be late Bob!

Then to Radio 2 on a taxi bike (inevitably through torrential rain) and another hot-rockin' ARF with some lovely weekend songs. Your top 70's ARF opener? Why not try that one for size.

Have an intriguing and satisfying Friday. See you after 2&5.

*Three Days of the Condor! Of course!

    Is it Friday already?

    Yeehaa :)

  • Comment number 2.

Good Morning Simon - I hope the sun shines for you today as it is a beautiful day with Flo and me!

Robert Redford?? Now, I am very jealous indeed that you get to meet such a star.

A 70's ARFO mmmmmmm let me have a think.....

    SUGAR BABY LOVE - RUBETTES

    I LOVE TO BOOGIE - T REX

  • Comment number 3.

Happy weekend blogpoppets one and all! I’m off sailing from Largs with Mr Aquaplane and a bunch of reprobates from an online sailing forum and setting off at lunchtime. I’m not sure if it’s got enough of a ‘Boom!’ to it but:

RHYTHM OF MY HEART – ROD STWART

Is not bad for a start to the weekend ARFO

    Cheers me hearties!

  • Comment number 4.

Aha, found a way to beat the 3 minute delay at last, unfortunately, it can only be done once a day ;)

  • Comment number 5.

CHICAGO - 25 or 6 to 4 would be my 70s opener. Probably not a surprise to anyone here :)

Alternatively, I've had these two floating round in my head persistently in the last 24 hours:

STATUS QUO - Rain (can't think what inspired that choice...)

    and

NICK LOWE - I Love The Sound of Breaking Glass

Any of the above would get my weekend off to a fine start.

  • Comment number 6.

    'Happy Together'

    The Turtles.

  • Comment number 7.

#4 - #1 Splish Splash Sal - that would be the 3 minute gap that starts at 09.34 and ends at 09.37, but is actually shorter than 3 minutes?!?! I think the rain has got into your wiring.

    Morning all, by the way!

  • Comment number 8.

    Morning all

I know it isn't a 70s track, but I would like to hear:

IT'S RAINING MEN - The Weather Girls

    T x

  • Comment number 9.

Morning Simon, team, NYM, and crimplene-clothed bloggers

Tonight Simon, I would like you to do Paul Weller a favour and choose one of these to welcome him into the ARFO Hall of Fame:

    BEAT SURRENDER by THE JAM

WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN - Style Council

TOWN CALLED MALICE - The Jam

    GOING UNDERGROUND - The Jam

    ETON RIFLES - The Jam

And if not, howzabout one of these:

HUSH - Deep Purple or Kula Shaker

    or

    NEW ORLEANS – Gillan

    The choice is yours!

  • Comment number 10.

Ermm, John, no that would be the post that I put on the last blog at 9.32, followed by the post on here at 9.34, begging your pardon :)

I think... goes off to check. LOL!

  • Comment number 11.

    Hi Simon and everyone

    Still raining here.....drought goes on!

Just driven 6 miles to work with car feeling funny, parked up and yep.....FLAT TYRE.

Tyre firm in Kingswinford is coming to Kings Heath to me in an hour at a cost of £58 all in for tyre and £50 call out as Kford is over 20 miles away!!

I tweeted a radio presenter on H***T West Midlands yesterday as he asked for recommendations for good podcasts and I recommended the Confessions one as it is currently at number 4. He tweeted back and said "Don't swear at me!" Looks like i have blown my cover as he thinks I listen to him at Drivetime! Oops!!!

Hope your meet with Robert Redford goes OK Simon and its on time and there are no "Sting" in the tails!!!

    Now for an ARFO:

As I was a kidlet in the 70's, how about:

    MY SHARONA - The Knack

Around when I just left Junior School.

Kickboxing comp in Worcester on Sunday, we are taking some of the kids to compete, its quite an easy competition to increase their confidence.

    Happy day and weekend.

    Laters

    Mandy ;)

  • Comment number 12.

Good morning all - beautiful blue sky so far................

Simon, considering your conversation with Sally last week about The Twist, I feel a most appropriate ARFO would be .................

LETS TWIST AGAIN - CHUBBY CHECKER.

Probably not the 70's, but who cares?!

See you all later - no comments yet about 'loons'....................?

    JW

  • Comment number 13.

The first single my cousin ever bought for me was

    CRAZY HORSES - THE OSMONDS

  • Comment number 14.

Yup, confirmed, but you are right about the rain getting into my wiring, there's so much of it, I'm waiting to develop webbed feet next.

I saw one of those head umbrellas in a shop the other day and thought about getting one, not being a fusspot about how my hair looks ;) until I heard, that people wearing them had in fact been struck by lightning, yikes!!

  • Comment number 15.

Its nice to have an ARFO with a theme, isn't it? As I type KB is playing Patsy Gallant which I'd potentially choose - its so 70's!

I'd love any of these 70's choices:

FREE ELECTRIC BAND - Albert Hammond

STAY WITH ME - The Faces

PART OF THE UNION - Strawbs

    ROCKARIA - ELO

  • Comment number 16.

Morning! (Ssshhhh - the sun is out - am going to try to sneak out for a walk before the rain clouds notice....)

If you want a 70's ARFO opener, then how about the jolly little number

BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE - THE JACKSONS

    Alternatively, there's

STAYING ALIVE - THE BEE GEES

    Righto, see you soon*

*flares swishing and scarf swinging (and woolly beard itching) away Benny struts, full of funky fever....

  • Comment number 17.

    70s songs? Doh!

    ONE STEP BEYOND - MADNESS.

( going for the hat trick!)

  • Comment number 18.

    Good morning, everybody!

I have tried to encapsulate the week events in blogland with my ARFO offering...

I FEEL LOVE - DONNA SUMMER

Why? I used a certain website to search for the number 1 on the day I was born.

I almost went for Maggie May, or something by ABBA, but I figured what with the year of birth revelations this week, I'd have to join in.

It's almost a shame that we're looking at 70's ARFO's today, as Mrs CoffeeBuzz-to-be has requested something else this morning over brekky.

    Off to the coffee machine...

  • Comment number 19.

    Good morning everyone.

I'll try hard not to offend anyone today :-S

    70s ARFO:

RUN RUN RUN by JO JO GUNNE

    please!

    Be back later.

  • Comment number 20.

    Roll over Beethoven - ELO.

One day, an ELO opener..... !

  • Comment number 21.

    Morning all.

Robert Redford *sigh* - I'm much too young to have appreciated him in his hey-day, but The Way We Were never fails to bring a lump to my throat in that early -mid 70s period he is just so beautiful it hurts .....

Anyway, pulling myself out of my daydream to the ARFO:

I Saw Her Standing There - The Beatles

Hope everyone is well and not getting trench foot in all the rain!

  • Comment number 22.

Hot-rockin' 70s? Surely that can only mean one thing...

DEVIL GATE DRIVE - Suzi Quatro

  • Comment number 23.

It's just occurred to me that the ARFO is usually from the 1970s anyway.

  • Comment number 24.

Erm, perhaps, before I swap my platforms (not good in mud) for wellies, I should just be faithful to my namesake and suggest

    WATERLOO - ABBA

    Oh yeah!

  • Comment number 25.

    Remember you're a womble! - The Wombles.

  • Comment number 26.

Good point Harry. Katymac's ARFO list from last week's blog reveals that if your ARFO suggestion is not a 70's rocker you have about a 1 in 30 chance of selection!

  • Comment number 27.

    13 - Shona - oh yes!

  • Comment number 28.

    Hot-rockin' 70s indeed John.

    SHANG-A-LANG - BAY CITY ROLLERS

  • Comment number 29.

    Silver Machine - Hawkwind.

  • Comment number 30.

Hi again Simon, DT Team and blogpoppets

Not to rub it in that Shona and I are enjoying the sunshine up north... I hope the sun shines down south, too!

SOmething from the 70s... how about one of these!

LONG COOL WOMAN IN A BLACK DRESS ~ The Hollies

YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET ~ Bachman Turner Overdrive

    RADAR LOVE ~ Golden Earring

ONE WAY OR ANOTHER ~ Blondie

    WATERLOO ~ Abba

  • Comment number 31.

    Morning All!

How about GIRL TALK by DAVE EDMUNDS (great rousing tune)

or TAKE ME I'M YOURS by SQUEEZE

or OLIVER'S ARMY by ELVIS COSTELLO

madchick x (1979 was a fabulous year for music don't you think?)

  • Comment number 32.

Ooops - missed the 70s bit ..... so for a decade appropriate choice (I won't go for number 1 on my birthday - Little Jimmy Osmond). We do have a lot of 70s ARFOs so I'll choose something more unusual:

The Ramones - Sheena is a Punk Rocker

  • Comment number 33.

I think this is 70s (just):

CAN'T STAND LOSING YOU - Police

  • Comment number 34.

Final choice - really have to go now. This is actually from Mini Hoffs' repertoire. He loves it.

    BLITZKRIEG BOP - THE RAMONES

  • Comment number 35.

The day that Curly Billy shot down crazy Sam McGhee - The Hollies.

  • Comment number 36.

    Warning: Anorak Time

or HOT STUFF by DONNA SUMMER

or WORKING MY WAY BACK TO YOU by THE SPINNERS (I defy anyone not to sing along to that one!)

or AIN'T NO STOPPING US NOW by McFADDEN & WHITEHEAD

I could go on and these are just from 1979.....!

  • Comment number 40.

36 - Harry Anorak - I think BLITZKRIEG BOP was 76 and am glad to see that it isn't on the list - there might be a slim slim chance of hearing it then?!!

Do you know, this 70's theme has put me into such a good mood that I have decided to have a party tonight accompanied by the choices of my fellow blogueiros. My husband finishes his current job today, and starts his new one on Monday and Mini-Hoffs will have completed two weeks in his new school. All invited - wear platforms and bring spacedust!

39 - MCW - ....with the burning love inside.......yeah, I'm working my way back to you babe......

(I used to like switching the speeds on my mum's record player so that this would play really slow and sound like a load of trolls singing!)

Anyone else play DJ'sin the 70's? I used to stack up a whole load of 45's and then they would plop down, one after another onto the player and I would introduce them to my Sindy dolls who were having a disco.....

Too much information. Got to go.

  • Comment number 44.

Only 2 from the 90s and none from the naughties. I know Radio 2 has a 'demographic' - but come on Simon & NYM we need to get up to date! Next week we really should aim for something post 2000!

  • Comment number 45.

LOL Shona at #37, they dont come more 'rock n roll' than that :O

  • Comment number 46.

#37 Shona - LOL!. If that gets chosen, Katy can provide us all with hats to eat.

  • Comment number 49.

On the subject of coats: in the early 70s, my school chums and I all wore ex-RAF Great Coats (a little like Jack Harkness but without the epaulettes) which we acquired from a market stall in Walsall.

Everywhere is looking so lush with all this rainfall and hopefully, with so much mud about, the housemartins, which have now arrived will have a more successful time housebuilding.

Last year, I had to put out a tub with mud in for them to make their nests with, clever little birds that they are. Even so, it was so dry, that unfortunately there house was blown down with a huge huff and a puff, three little piggies style :(

    Morning all

From a soggy and subdued Robin Hood County.

If we're going for a 70s ARFO, one of the tracks I remember most from that decade is:

'Kung Fu Fighting' - Carl Douglas

I would have been 4 or 5 at the time and just becoming aware of music. I remember absolutely loving it at the time anyway! I also loved:

    'Bohemian Rhapsody' - Queen

...and I remember, when the now iconic video was shown on TOTP, wafting around to the slow bits and leaping about to the rocky bit in front of the telly (still do!).

A choice from later in the decade would be:

    'Denis' - Blondie

I remember thinking how cool she was plus she was on the cover of, and the lyrics were in, the very first copy of Smash Hits I ever bought!

Any of the above would be fab and groovy! :-)

    N xx

#65 Katy Keen, following your suggestion, I'm listening to the Motors' Greatest Hits on Sp*tify. First, I didn't realise there were so many; or, second, that they were so good.

    Great choice, m'dear! :0)

#65 Lady Driver has a fascination with that Airport track. She's not of a musical bent and therefore doesn't appreciate the finer nuances of chord structures and sequences, but her description of it that it sounds like varying degrees of sadness and despair sort of sums it up pretty well.

It is the first thing she plays on Y**T*** whenever she goes on there to play choons.

    Good Morning All :)

Did it rain this much back in the 70s? I suppose it must have, although there was the famous drought of '76, much like the one we are in now...

I don't suppose I should bother choosing any ARFOs, as I am the reigning (soon to be deposed) Queen (has anyone ever reigned for longer than one week?) But I'll give the Royal seal of approval to the following, anyway, as twin one loves them both (surprisingly) and they are 70s songs...

ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE - FUNKADELIC

    CARS - GARY NUMAN

    Yeehaa, more rain.

I think a nice 5 mile stroll along the beach is in order. Has anyone got one of those 'scope' thingys, that you see the more serious 'birder' using?

Thinking of getting one with birthday money from big Sis, but wanted to find out a bit more about them first.

Back again - not raining yet, it must be at least 70C here today ;-)

Seeing as we're changing names today, thought I'd have a go too!

#89 Sal - Mr T's son (RSPB warden) has got one of those 'scope' thingys; very expensive, but excellent for extremely amateur bird-watchers like me!

    Morning all

Blimey - busy blog again, especially for a Friday.

Can I suggest - JOHN MILES - MUSIC as an ARFO, it will give the DTD time to dry out if he plays the full version.

    Cheers

#70 Lisa F - your post was worth the wait. Atomic Rooster - far out, man. Sixth form disco memories. [Also enjoyed stomping around to Tomorrow Night]

    :^)

#76 SSSal - you are, as always, very welcome x

#84 AlfP - aww thanks - *squirms in bashful manner*

#87 NVDryer - am beginning to think that sadness and despair may not suit the ARFO brief..lol

  • Comment number 97.

OOh I have seen the price of some of them Tortie, I will be starting off at the lower end of the market, dont want to cause scope envy amongst the big boys! :O

  • Comment number 98.

#82 Nadine - that would have been around the time I was working on Smash Hits. Good times.

    :^)

#89 Sal, I have one but I don't use it much. I think they're great if you're going to stand in one place waiting for a rare sighting. But, for strolling around, seeing whatever turns up, a small pair of good binoculars is better. Only my opinion, of course.
