Hey Ho the wind and the rain
Well that was a busy blog! Was it the rainy-day, hunkering-down, hug-an-Aga mood? There were certainly enough wild tales out there to keep everyone going for a while, though as the rain lashes down here, maybe we'll be here for a while. Although I can't say I remember it, my paper says the April of 2000 which was the wettest on record when some places had 4 times the usual rain. In case you're wondering, there doesn't seem any way of predicting the summer on the basis of a wet spring however, so we'll just have to sit tight on that.
Yesterday I had a lovely day out in Cardiff thankyou very much. I was there for 2 hours (good games of Hangman on the way) then came back. Had a nice eggs benedict and got droughted on very heavily indeed. And that is all I can say. Them's the rules apparently.
But a fine show to come back for! Kate Humble was great (and yes, it's a fine perk The Driver-Jenny Agutter was lovely too) and the beehive on the top of Radio 2/ in Ken's studio is a fine idea. I can imagine all the paperwork and meetings but maybe that's what your producer is there for? Radio 2 Hivetime? Selling our honey as we go? I'm sure it'll be huge hit. And finishing with Foo Fighters and Fishermans Friends (then Fenella Fudge). This is what Radio 2 does.
Today we have a swanky pudding of somesort from Nige and oldies? It's GREED today. Tonight 'Two Greedy Italians' is back on BBC2 in Liguria (looks great) and we all feel a little greedy on Thursday with Nigel B's array of lovely dishes anyway And GREED of all kinds is in the news most of the time anyway, so that'll see us through.
Have a warm and toasty Thursday, see you after 5

#50 I've been watching it too, Harry. I was 11 and carefree in 1973, so I don't remember it being quite so gloomy. I think the adults then would have said different.
I do remember all the bag searches on trips to London - and being quite anxious about bombs. My life, as with most children then, was mainly based outside playing, so the electricity black outs didn't disrupt too much tv viewing. I do remember having our dinner cooked on a camping stove when the supplies went off.

We watched that last night and I echo your sentiments. It really wasn't *that* bleak.
The 70s saw me into adulthood, student life and London. I became very employable and gainfully took full advantage of that. There was also some great music around. I can truly say that I had a ball!
My Other Half, however, was nobbut a lad. He says he can't remember things being that grim because he was protected from it - but as a child of 5 in 1970, he would be, wouldn't he?

#50 yes, a 10-20 year old during the 70's and not as bleak in my eyes either, but the power cuts meant I could get out of homework..and we had a gas cooker, so ended up eating in the kitchen by candlelight which I though was romantic!

#50 Harry, yes I watched the 70's programme the other night and like Tortie, I was 12 in 1973. I remember power cuts and sitting round the gas oven in the kitchen with my parents amking our own entertainment (that's when I took up interest in learning to play the guitar).
I don't remember the rising food prices or food being scarce on the table and I don't remember my parents talking about rising food costs either. Like others, I was probably too busy running about playing outside.

At 11:08 26th Apr 2012, Harry the Snapper wrote:#50 etc ......... I remember the bombing campaign quite vividly. My older sister lived and worked in Birmingham and could have been in "The Tavern in the Town" any night of the week. A good friend of the family, a really nice Irish bloke, was beaten up just for being Irish even though he'd lived in the Midlands for 30+ years.
I can remember the sudden increase in the number of Asian kids at school when Idi Amin expelled all those people.
Although we were an all-electric household we could have an open fire but the power cuts didn't seem to deprive us of much and it did prepare me future life: we were without power for five days when Carlisle was flooded in 2005.
Despite all the strife, there was still a lot of joy to be had. I suppose it's never a bad time to be young.

Re the 70s discussion - I remember powercuts, cooking on camping gas cookers which seemed very wobbly with a pan of boiling potatoes on top, and my father being proud that he'd kept his mother's paraffin lamp for such occasions. And also a mad and obsessive scramble by my mother to get her hands on bags of sugars (not a euphemism).

We just watched Harry's Game on watch again via Virg*n Moody - and mr e was amazed - he was the other side of the world till ten years ago and had no idea N Ireland went through (some would say are still going through) such a major conflict.
Strange that they chose Brum to plant bombs (apart from the fact that it was Britain's 2nd largest city) - as most people had no links to the landed gentry that had caused Ireland's strife...

2000 was a bad April for me, so I don't remember the weather to be honest..

We still had our weekly trip to Birmingham on a Saturday. Of course, we were constantly being told to look out for suspicious packages; there was no longer any 'left luggage' at the station; and, we were often evacuated from the likes of Lewis's because someone had left a carrier bag unattended. But, I don't recall the scares stopping us doing much.

At something of a loose end today as we were suppost to be having our old bath taken out and shot. Its had a repreive of 4 days though as my fitter of choice is having a couple of days off.

It appears I'm roughly the same age as Katy's other half so I was only a nipper when it started. I recall the decade as a generally happy one, though not all aspects of family life were ideal. I do remember, though, playing outside a hell of a lot, climbing trees, crawling through large concrete pipes in the park (through which the stream ran), and cycling miles away from home with my friends on days out, things it seems kids of a similar age no longer do.
I also remember school having a fair number of different groups - West Indian, Mixed Race, Asian - but no recollection of any racist attitudes towards anyone in them.
