And we're back...

Simon Mayo|08:13 UK time, Thursday, 1 March 2012

Good day to you all. Somewhat bleary, another blog from the estate. Apologies for absence again but book duties called for one day only. So interviews, an Alan Titchmarsh show appearance, a mass signing (200? 400? No idea) and then twiglets, refreshments, chemistry experiments and speeches. Rebecca, Matt, Sally,Nige and the team all came down and milled like the best of them. It was a bit like getting married or a big birthday bash where your friends, work colleagues and family all end up talking to each other and eating bowl after bowl of crisps. And, in this case, nitrogen based ice cream.

Show day! Back to work with tunes to play and guests to to talk to. Nigel has food for us and Dr Mösh will shout entertainingly. A confessor will confess will, a quiz will be quizzed and Rebecca will lose. All is well with the world.

And tunes please for WORLD BOOK DAY. We've done this before of course so one way could be the song equivalent of the parents who have to get their kids dressed up as a character from their favourite book. So CHARACTERS IN BOOKS would work too. Over to you guys.

Have a happy St David's day and a tip-top, hunky-dory Thursday. See you after 5

Happy St David's Day to all.

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Good to hear the book launch went well. I hope there aren't too many sore heads this morning!

Today's theme is really hard - too many books to choose from, and my mind has gone blank! I'm going to start with:

    HARRY by Catherine Howe (Potter)

GEORGIE GIRL by the Seekers (one of the Famous Five)

TEDDY BEAR by Elvis Presley (Winnie the Pooh/Paddington)

May think of one or two more on my drive to work...

    Morning all,

Dt team, bloggers, fog-bound poppets and DT Dude, fresh from his Big Day now being introduced as 'Radio DJ and Author' - that must be a thrill (even if it is from Steve Wright's lips!)

We are very foggy here ourselves, but I cycled in, looking like I had cycled thru a shower...and found that one member of staff (who comes into work in a car) had called in and claimed his village was 'fog bound' and he could NOT get in...pah kids these days...

Absinthe from the mini-blog yesterday, apols, I have a note.

Nearing the end of term (hurrah!) so soon will have some peace.

No water in the building today, making it interesting with up to 170 students' bottoms, and twice that number of hands to wash...tricky.

RE theme, I thought it might be World Book Day theme, but thought we had a book one recently? I remember paperback writer for sure.

I'd like to 2nd/3rd whatever both Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights and

Elvis Costello Everyday I write the book

Back later, after I've had a thunk for more originals of my own!

Deebee, so pleased to hear the op went ahead and your Mum is doing ok.

    Harry, like the joke!

Thanks for all the good wishes yesterday. The interview went well. Really good bloke, interesting work BUT 12 hour days, lots of travel and no blogging time. I don't think it is for me. I can afford to hold on for a couple of months until the right one comes along.

I fell over last night. Hving been telling my Mum off for months about her falling over, I felt a right muppet. I was carrying a whiskey into the liviing room, ready to settle down to MasterChef and the Big Blue cat ran under my feet. I could feel myself falling but couldn't put out my right hand to break the fall as it was holding the whiskey. I couldn't put out my left hand as that is the bad shoulder. So, I fell on my knees - fortunately onto the wood floor rather than the kitchen tiles. Big ouch. Lovely bruises.

Garden beckons. Too nice to be in. In fact, I have hung the washing outside. Really is quite a stunning day. As Sal would say, happy days!

  • Comment number 81.

#77 & 79 two thirds of the whiskey was saved. The lost third went over the floor and the Big Blue Cat. Obviously, she then had to be washed otherwise she would have washed herself and that would have been very bad!! A most interrupted MasterChef!

Feeling so sad about Davy Jones. He was my first crush - I must have been 6. I met him when I was 14 or 15. I was living in Singapore and the Monkees played a couple of nights there. In those days, Singapore didn't have pop concerts - venues were hotel banqueting rooms and the event was a dinner with the music afterwards. Tickets were a couple of hundred dollars and naturally, my parents said no to me going. So, my best friend and I headed to the hotel during the day in an effort to see the Monkees. We found out which floor they were staying on and lurked for a while. Got bored so got in the lift to go back to the ground floor when who should step into the lift with us but Mickey Dolenz and his wife! He was lovely and invited my friend and I to join them for a coffee, which we did - 2 tongue tied teenagers. Davy Jones then came in from the pool and joined us as well. A really special memory.

If it becomes collectible no doubt I'll be kicking myself that I didn't buy a dozen copies while it was cheap but it's impossible to second-guess the collectibles market.

I'd be interested to know what the first print run was. I suspect it was quite high considering the amount of promotion its getting.

And the film rights; if it's made into a movie, now that would make a huge difference to its collectibility.

A word of advice to anyone who is buying it and hoping it will become a sort-after book: look after the dust jacket! Even the tiniest tear will dramatically reduce its value. Ideally, buy one to read and a second to sit in the dark, unopened.

I don't know Margaret Forster well although I know her husband. Although she wrote the novel that Georgy Girl was based on, he told me that the guy who wrote the song to accompany the movie made far more money that she ever got from it.

#74 yes, yes, but like Sal #77 said - did you save the Whisky??

Wonder how many accidents that end up in A&E are drink-related, but not drunk drink-related, if you know what I mean?

Deebee - Good to get an operation over and done with, it's scary just getting thru an op when you get to a certain age...recovery of your Mum will no doubt be speedy as she's getting lots of support and help from her family..

My m-in-law, now back on the mend, (after a replacement, replacement hip op) is having to eat BETWEEN meals (Dr's orders!!) to bulk back up - that advice has never been given to me!

She said "I've never been a size 12 before, I can't be a 12 now" but I didn't like to say, she has always been quite 'substantial', so maybe she is now at her proper fighting weight!!

Laters all, off to attempt a lunchtime walk without a squirrel-related injury...

camouflage jacket (check), tin hat (check) blacked-up face (check), non-squeaky shoes (check) ok, cover me, I'm going in....

#81 WOW! What a lovely memory!

I did something similar to meet the Bay City Rollers...lurking in a Mancs airport hotel where we knew they were staying (even posing with suitcases!)...the lift door opened - out came the Rollers - and SLAM! all I saw was the inside of the armpit of a very burly and not very fragrant security guard..

It was me and him up against the wall...

    Ah memories....

Good afternoon everyone from a gloriously sunny, warm Essex.

Glad to hear your mum is on the mend Deebee and hope your knees are ok Alex.

My back seems to have stabilised and hasn't spasmed (?) for a few days now - just need to be careful. One thing which made me smile during the agony that was Saturday night, I thought I could listen to Richard Allinson to take my mind off the pain but he was off ill too! The one time I could have listened at the time of broadcasting and the gods were against me! Get well soon to him too!

I'll have to see if he is well enough to go to Tes**'s today.

Loads of good suggestions for choons so I'll just listen this evening and see who I recognise. Good luck everyone.

Alex, sorry to hear about your accident, but lucky that not too much of the whiskey was wasted. Maybe take more water in it next time... ;o) Sorry about the job too - I'm sure the right one will come along for you soon.

Harry I was thinking about getting a hardcover copy of Itch as a collectable (and possibly to get signed at some point if the opportunity arises) and either a paperback or K*nd*e version to carry around and read - probably the paperback as I can then pass it on to my 11 year old nephew.

Loving the 'stalking' tales... ;o) I was far to shy, and my parents too strict for me to do anything similar in my yoof. But I have stayed with some pals in the same hotel as the Top Gear guys, in the knowledge that they were probably going to be there, when I went to the Top Gear Live exhibition and show at the NEC a couple of years ago. We saw them in the bar, and I nearly bumped into James May (literally) in the foyer. He was looking rather lost actually... his reputation is clearly well founded... ;o)

#91 Deebee, sounds like a good idea. A signed copy will always be a more attractive book than an unsigned one. However, best get him just to sign it rather tha dedicating it. If it's signed "To Deebee ......" it will detract from it's desirability ........ unless, of course, you become incredibly famous :0)

Another thing to look out for, and you may have to chat up your local independent bookseller, is any of the pormotional material that will accompany the book: bookmarks, posters, etc, especially if they are small enough to loosely insert into the book. But, and I can't emphasise this enough, the most important thing is a mint condition dustwrapper.

An example I quote often: a first edition, first impression, of Tolkien's "The Hobbit" - without its jacket, it's worth about £4k ..... with its jacket in fine condition, £25k+

and rising .............. one signed "Dear Jack (CS Lewis), hope you like the book, JRRT" could easily fetch 10 times that and I dream of such things :0)
