Nearly There

Simon Mayo|08:10 UK time, Thursday, 22 December 2011

Morning festive bloggers! Like the names! I was enjoying the confusion of yesterday's show. Nice peace on earth tunes by the way. I have always enjoyed Christmas radio shows; great atmosphere, great tunes (mostly) and knowing what most listeners are doing makes it all very special. I remember driving home on Christmas Eve from Nottingham to Worthing one year ('82/'83 probably) and listening to Steve Wright on Radio One. Although it was a nightmare journey, Steve made it a blast and I loved every minute of it. It was the feeling of Chris Rea's 'Driving Home For Christmas' but for the whole of the A52, M1 and A24. Hopefully we'll get a bit of that going today and tomorrow as we do our final shows of the year.

Loved Ralph yesterday. He is always so modest and unassuming but when he picks up his guitar, it all sounds great to me. His voice is so warm and weary, he gives everything he sings a presence and character. Loved his version of In The Bleak Midwinter.

Today we bring you the Christmas meal on a budget. Nigel says it is possible! Listen well, there may be a few savings to be made. He's not going to scrimp on flavour or quality, just not bust the bank in the process. Go Nige!

And songs (before you rest up) for SANTA CLAUS, ST NICHOLAS and FATHER CHRISTMAS as he gets ready for his big day. Quite a few to choose from I believe, so let's go and make a Christmas classic.

Have a merry and distinguished Thursday, see you after 5.

Good Morning Each! here you all are. i was still posting on yesterdays bloig. As i was after a bit of advise, I'll C&P from there to here...

I have become giddy with excitement at the prospect of todays blog party. I'm like a kid in a sweet shop, which in my case, is probably too accurate. Anyway, I have been giving some thought to what drinkies I should bring with me. Having perused the wine shelves in my shop, I like the looks of the Fleurie, always a nice drop. There is also a rather fine Nuits Saint Georges, which would make a fine accompaniment to a nice ripe brie, which I also may bring. Having said that, I haven't yet finished my perusal, and there are one or two other places to look.

Rightio, I've also been upstairs to the flat, and gone through a few cupboards. I've settled on a bottle of 1974 Pomagne. I think that was a good year for Pomagne. Also, I have found three quarters of a bottle of Scotsmac, and if I give the top a bit of a wipe, I'm sure it'll be fine. Additionally, there is a quarter bottle of Cypriot Whisky (Champion, by name), which comes in its own leatherette pouch. As for beer, I have a Party Seven of Watneys Red Barrel, and some cans of Long Life. (Specially brewed for the can). Will this do? If pushed, I could add Double Diamond to the mix, but hey, I don't want to appear to be stealing the show.

    Any feedback?

Back in a mo, with choons.

    POSTED IN YESTERDAY'S BLOG:

    Hello early birds!

I, too, am shopping from 9 am. Mother is picking me up - a real joy because 9 weeks ago I dare not even think about Christmas because she was so poorly.

Take care on those roads Fairy OTTOTT and Mince Pie Muncher ..

.. and Mistletoe Mo - lovely to have you back on 'our' side x

I'll bring the blog party *Tree *and the *Snowman* in ... when I return at lunchtime.

Was wondering what to bring munchie-wise. Whilst searching for inspiration, I found a tin of chunks and some spare cheddar which gave me an idea! So I'll buy some grapefruit as a base and rummage around for some cocktail sticks - it all screams Cheese and Pineapple Hedgehog - so that's that sorted. Phew.

    ;^)

Sounds like there will be plenty Pomagne anyway as I have some chilling in the fridge along with the Babycham. The Sweetheart Stout doesn't need chilled does it?

#15. Spookily, I was going to post yesterday that as well as mistletoe I was going to bring a Watney's Party Seven. Then my mind wandered as I thought of the joke about the similarity of Watney's to making love in a boat and I forgot to post!

Still, as you've got the beer covered, perhaps I'll bring some of that vintage Barley Wine along...

All of the Santa Songs I'd like have already been mentioned, so nothing to add. I was fortunate enough to get two menshes yesterday, and particularly pleased to hear the original Brinsley Shwarz version of 'Peace Love and Understanding', so unless I have a blinding flash of brilliant inspiration - which, let's face it, is unlikely - that's my suggestions done for this week.

Beautiful morning here in Windsor. What with a wasp yesterday, daffs in the wood across the road and mild sunny weather I'm beginning to wonder if I haven't slept through Christmas and woken in spring...

Anyways, back to the plot, Uncle Simon, as the Wombles called you, any chance of a non Chrismassy song tonight or tomorrow for the 60th birthday of big sis today (sure she will not mind being reminded again tomorrow if that's only option) one of her two faves, waterloo sunset by the kinks or all or nothing by the small faces.

Be good everyone, I have to get into character for Saturdays hauntings

    *planning alert*

Please could everybody put an extra tray of ice cubes in their freezer NOW, and bring them along tonight.

There's nothing worse than a warm snowball.

  • Comment number 83.

#82 Oh, before the pendants say anything, technically you don't put a try of ice cubes in the freezer, you put an ice cube tray filed with water. If you already have a tray of ice cubes, empty first, put to one side in freezer, and re-fill with water.

Toodled into town at lunch time to go to the hairdressers to get ready for the party.

I think my feathercut is rather fetching don't you?

  • Comment number 85.

#80... me neither... I've lost track of who most people are, so maybe we could have our names stuck on our foreheads!

  • Comment number 86.

#49 The Grumbleweeds? The last time I saw them it was at the Batley Variety two years ago and there was only Graham & Maurice left out of the original band members.

Just putting in an order in for Emva Cream.

  • Comment number 87.

#85 I think I might have to stick my own name on my forehead and see if I can guess who I am!!

    #82 ice in - I've got 2 trays

    #84 get you Shona - very nice with a 70s vibe :)

Names would be handy - I've completely lost track of all but the obvious.

  • Comment number 93.

#90 Doesn't matter at all. We all know we are in good company anyway :)

#92 I thought it would match the drinks and games that are going to be on offer at the party :)

  • Comment number 94.

#92 Christmas G, are we aiming for a 70s vibe? If so, the only wine I expect to see at this party is Liebfraumilch. [Do you hear that Sprout? None of that namby-pamby Nuits St Georges!]

  • Comment number 95.

I was just pondering, poor old Eartha Kitt, forever condemned to be an unsavoury Cockney rhyming slang...

Along with J Arthur Rank and Brahms and Liszt!

I am experimenting with a new cocktail called a Bilious Blaster! It's Gin, Ginger Ale... And Gaviscon!! :D

  • Comment number 96.

#94 What about Blue Nun? That's the retro wine of choice, surely.

  • Comment number 97.

#96 Zoe, Blue Nun IS Liebfraumilch :0)

  • Comment number 98.

#89. I wasn't expecting to share anyone. I didn't realise it was that kind of party...

  • Comment number 99.

In the 70s there were only three kinds of wine: one was bottled, Liebfraumilch, and then we had draft Australian white and draft Australian red from Yates' :-D

  • Comment number 100.

Can I have a hat, please?
