Monday Blues? Good!

Simon Mayo|09:38 UK time, Monday, 7 November 2011

Good morning to bloggers all, wherever you may be. I hope the weekend was a fine one. I took it upon myself to try one of Nigel's recent recipes- the superfood chicken and smoothie curry one from the book by Gurpareet Bains. Finding Nigella seeds proved too much even for out lovely smart supermarket that sells that kind of thing. It wasn't helped by the fact that I had no idea what they look like and that the 'herbs and spices manager' had never seen them either. So what's a chap to do? Obviously ring Nigel! He was about to talk about cheese somewhere but caught him in time for him to tell me that black onion seeds are just as good. Of course they are. Anyway the result was pretty fine if fiery and everyone declared themselves impressed (but they would wouldn't they). Then we let off a few fireworks around the estate, finding the 'retire 25 metres' instruction a tad difficult as it meant we had to congregate in the hall to watch what was happening in the garden. I tried to inform the younger members present about jumping jacks and bangers that used to be sold here but are now banned-they feigned interest and went to a party. And that was that.

Today! We welcome multi-million selling blues/rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd to Drivetime. He doesn't read music, is completely self taught and his father in law is Mel Gibson! He has been nominated for 5 Grammy awards and opened for the likes of The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and The Eagles. He is very welcome to come in, noodle around with his guitar and help prepare the way for Paul Jones at 7.

Tunes today for the troubled EURO. Yes it's time to bend your minds to that most talked about currency and work out some songs that might-at a pinch-fit snugly into its grasp. I know you'll enjoy the task...

Have a enthusiastic and positive Monday, see you after 5

Good Morning Each! I am afraid that I have had to let The Kendo Nagasaki Pretence go. As a disguise, he was most ineffectual. Or should that be ineffective? Anyway, off he goes to that great disguise box in the sky, nary a mansh to his name. New disguise is, as you can see, Edward McCrae. I wonder if anyone aside from the obvious two has any idea of the link between my poor disguises yet. (The obvious two? I know who I mean). Anyway, choons...

#49. The song 'Everythings AOR' from the album 'McIntyre, Treadmore and Davitt' contains the following lines...

'But I can put a tennis racket up against my face

And pretend that I am Kendo Nagasaki'

Furthermore, in the song 'Tending The Wrong Grave For 23 Years', (from the album 'Saucy Haulage Ballads), the plot that had been recieving the undue attention was indeed the final resting place of one Edward McCrae. Both of these songs, and indeed, albums, are, as you have summised, from the works of that finest of bands Half Man Half Biscuit, and I congratulate you on your ability to 'suss me out' as it were. However, this assumes the fact that the aforementioned is the ONLY link between my two disguises, thus far. (Other disaguises will follow) So, is this the only link? Erm. Yes!

Brother Can You Spare a Dime - George Michael's version is lovely

Fight for Ourselves - Spandau Ballet

I (Who Have Nothing) - Shirley Bassey

I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor (can't see France & Germany letting it fail), or conversely,

Livin on a Prayer - Bon Jovi

I only asked 'one' negative request - we're all allowed one tune that makes us cringe aren't we?? :)

  • Comment number 69.

#68 Papa3, I'm not sure that a "negative request" is really in the spirit of the blog but that's only my opinion and the point I was trying to make. As for being "allowed one tune that makes us cringe", I'll allow you as many as you want :-)

  • Comment number 70.

    Breakeven - The Script

    Danger Zone - Kenny Loggins

  • Comment number 71.

#68 #69 I have to agree with Harry really, in that we all have songs that we'd rather not be chosen, but it's more in the spirit of this blog to chose other ones rather than asking for something not to be played.

Also I think Lord A has form for being a bit contrary in that regard and may play it especially as someone has asked for it not to be!

  • Comment number 72.

    Warmth Ter ALL...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

After the sad news of the crash on the M5 & having been a truck driver for 14 years & driving my car since 17 (20 and a bit years).... I've written an article about roads & road safety for all to read.

A 3 part article over 3 days on the blog.

The reason i've written this is hopefully maybe by just one of two people reading it they might think twice & maybe we can start to imporve road safety further & reduce the 2,000 people that are killed on our roads each year.... Most sadly that need never be killed!!!

It's good deaths have declined from a steady 3,500 per year to under 2,000 in 2010....

This mainly due to stronger & safer vehicles what with higher build quality, built-in crash zones, airbags, sealt belts etc.... But what can be done to reduce the number further.....

    PART 1 - In a moment.....

  • Comment number 77.

PART 1 – How To Make Our Roads Safer:

VERY sad to see such a bad crash on the M5, And on Friday!!!

Most road accidents always seem to happen on Fridays... I've noticed this in the 14 years I've been a truck driver... Which is why I've written on the blog before about this and even nick name it 'demolition derby day'... It seems that way because every time I work on a Friday nearly always it's the day I will see a road crash/ flashing blue lights at the side of the road.

Friday is the busiest day with a lot of tired people rushing to get home at the end of a long week working. And tired people who don't normally drive much travelling long distance to see relatives for the weekend. Coupled with the fact people now it's the day of traffic jams, which many are caused/ worsened by road accidents. This leads to a greater feeling of tension on the road on Friday in which people rush more to beat the afternoon traffic jams... Thus all these factors leading to more accidents & exacerbating the situation!

I've seen enough over my 20 years of driving & 14 years to make at least a couple of 'Police Camera Action' programmes if I had had a camera recording everything I've seen/ been subjected to.

I've seen a school girl get flung into the air by a car, I've seen a major crash happen on the M5 near Cheltenham in which a HGV driver failed to notice the back of a stationary traffic jam... It ran into the back of the stationary traffic, resulting in a silver Ford Mondeo upside down on it's roof & the HGV up a grass embankment.

Only a month ago I arrived at a crash on the M62 that had only just happened. People speeding in heavy rain had aquaplane out of control. The result a small car hit at force side on by a large Mercedes. They side of the car was very badly destroyed, little left of it... And the female passenger still inside trapped. From the damage I could tell it was not good at all.

The motorway was closed for most of the day after – A sign something very bad has happened.

I've been subjected to road rage & violence from others... I've had my fuel stolen... In fact I've seen most things.

The saddest was a dark evening when 5 horses escaped onto the A55 near Chester. I raced in my HGV up to the next junction & came back on the other side, trying to use my lorry as a road block to stop there being a big crash.

Sadly people would not slow down & were doing everything to get past my lorry. I was driving in the middle of the dual carriageway but cars were undertaking me and swerving half on the hard shoulder to get past me.

The result – Some of the horses were killed outright... All were hit, with the rest being shot right in front of us by police marksmen. I still remember the day very vividly.

We all sat there for 3 hours, including the impatient people who not slow. If only they had given 5 minutes of their selfish little lives by stopping and allowing the owners of the horses to round them up. But no, many people drive with the selfish attitude on the road is all theirs and nobody & nothing should get in their way.

That day as I looked into the eyes of a terrified horse waiting to be shot right in front of my lorry... Something changed inside me. A sadness about why are people so selfish in our society... Especially when it comes to driving.

I do wish I'd documented my 14 years trucking via an always recording video camera – would make an interesting archive of being a truck driver which could be made into a tv programme.

So what caused Friday's M5 crash?

(PART 2 Tomorrow/ On the next blog).

#61 Driver... it is still sunny now and the sky is blue as far as my eye can see... hard to believe for November but the sun is really warm today and I had my lunch outside in the garden sitting in the gazebo thingy which is south facing... long may it continue and I'm going out for another nice doggy walk before the sun goes down!

    Back later! xx

Had a lovely hard frost here which meant the mutt came home clean -no muddy mess to wipe up at 6.45am!

Hope all are well, can't think of an oldie so will just send my good wishes to everyone, off to make mac and chees for tea, non gluten free request as the house is coeliac free for a few days, nom, nom, nom....

Bingo. I have something to say to you, regarding your last blog entry, but it'll wait until you have finished your 3 parter. I'd like to add, though you are quite eloquent when you drop the accent. I'd always assumed it to be west country, but it is apparently Scouse. I also thought you to be a tad north of my own 54 years, so another surprise. Stick about a bit, owd lad, you and the other neighbours are always welcome.

I have to confess I enjoy your 'sensible ' posts just as much as your Liverpudlian dialect ones - and they're a lot quicker to read! Keep up the good work

Afternoon all. A bit late for choosing choons I should think! Just changed my job so it's a bit hit and miss getting on here to see everyone at the moment. Hopefully it will be a bit easier soon.

Anyway I hope you are all well. Deebee - I hope the tomato soup works and you feel better soon! x

#77 Very thought provoking Bingo. I like to think of myself as a careful driver - thankfully I've never been involved in a serious accident and the few minor prangs I've been in haven't been my fault (there was one where I had to admit to 50/50, but only because I couldn't be bothered to go to court to fight it. I still maintain I was in the right). But every time I get in the car, especially if I'm going on a longer journey, I am aware that however careful I might be there are still a lot of idiots out there. I look forward to your next installment.

Looks like I'll be going offline for a while - my laptop cable appears to have melted and I'm nearly out of battery. And I don't feel well enough at the moment to sit up at the family PC in the study. Will be cheering any blogpoppet menshes from my sick bed.

Those seperation lines between posts, they were really intrusive, weren't they? Weren't they? I don't have a clue what I've done. If the worst comes to the worst, it's been really nice knowing you all!
