(Ahem)

Simon Mayo|08:36 UK time, Friday, 21 October 2011

Hooray for Friday and hooray for porridge. And today with two toppings-that's how decadent I'm feeling. Not a bad way to start the day I'd say. My cafe of choice today is playing a selection of Flock of Seagulls hits (or a couple on rotation) and the era of 80's big hair is filling the store. Who had a perm? Who had headband? I'm guessing there's a couple of old new romantics on this blog. Time to come clean I'd say...

It's a two show day again with the movie show featuring the director of 'We Need To Talk About Kevin' Lynn Ramsey and Steven Soderburgh who's latest film is Contagion starring Laurence Fishburne, Matt Damon Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law. Oh and Kate Winslett and Marion Cotillard. Don't go if you're poorly however. You will not be welcome and you might feel you won't make it to Christmas. Any actor who coughs in film is likely to peg it before the end and this is no exception. It's just that the whole world is coughing. Take something to suck. Quietly.

And then skates on for the all request Friday duties. Goodness knows who'll be providing snacks as PTP is off as well. Just good to know the money team always help us out by losing. We are hoping Rebecca will be back sometime next week...

Your totally unbeatable top song for the shows opening can be left here. Have a sparkling and enthusiastic Friday, see you after 2&5.

    Happy Birthday Paul of Sheffield!

I have to confess, Simon, I am an old new romantic!

You've got to love an 80s song and as it just so happens, I do.

This one got overlooked in the 80s, although did climb the charts to number 12 ( I think!) .....

Good morning Simon, team and all you lovely blogsters.

I was just watching Harry being consigned to the naughty step on the previous blog and here you all are. I'm munching on Katy's scrummy cakes (Happy Birthday again Paul) and trying to get my caffeine up to boost my brain levels before I choose my ARFO.... maybe one of those new romantic choons I used to love so much!

    Be back in a bit.

  • Comment number 5.

I can't think of a suitable ARF tune yet, so will be back later for that. just wanted to say...

MTF - Thank you for drawing my attention to Katy's cake - I will take some! Happy Birthday Paul, maybe I should have saved some of that cake for the actual birthday boy, sorry.

Jilly - how fortuitous that you spotted those people, although sorry it's shaken you up a bit.

Katy - hope your Mum is continuing to improve.

    Hi Simon and everyone.

Simon, how inciteful of you, you must read the blog very closely....the 80's was my teenager years and right at the end of it I passed my driving test!

Yes, I did have a perm or two....hence the piccie with the main man Mr Bryan Adams on my Facebook profile...however, not as huge as pic portrays...it WAS the shadow catching the top of my head that accentuated it! One perm was washed out when I got home ...due to a brand beginning with P!!!

As to 80's attire, when I was 14 and travelling on the bus by myself I wore a matching grey top and ra ra skirt, leggings and deely boppers on my head!

I had an Adam Ant style blouse ( white, 3/4 sleeves and ruffle at the front) paid for out of my winnings from a poster competition at school, sailor blouse and countless ski jumpers which I wore when I attended an Annie audition where I passed the singing but as to the tap dancing ( 2 left feet I am afraid to admit!)

Blimey that sounded like a confession...I can hear Matt cackling as I write!!!

Now for the ARFO, how about:

    1. MY GENERATION - The Who

    2. GENO - Dexys Midnight Runners

    3. PINBALL WIZARD - The Who

    4. BURNING LOVE - Elvis

    5. KIDS WANNA ROCK - Bryan Adams

And Deebee we should pick a joint one for next Friday as we are birthdaying next Saturday!

    Have a lovely day.

    Catch ya laters

Morning all Blogpoppets and the DTT.

Jilly-Glad you and the Mr are OK-You do do things that on reflection you think are daft but we've all done that. Lets hope they are caught soon.

Yes I loved all the New Romantic stuff, and love anything from 1982 and 1985 especially. Mr B doesn't like Duran Duran and there was a spate recently where whichever radio station he put on, there was a DD track playing. It was really the last straw when there was one on Radio 4 with an interview with Simon Le Bon-He really did think he was cursed but I thought it was really funny!!!!

Love to all as work is calling rather too loudly.

    Morning All,

Funny you should be talking 'New Romantics', because this little number popped into my head earlier this morning! I haven't heard it for a while on the radio, so please would you consider for ARFO:

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO PAUL OF SHEFFIELD!!!

I don't think I was ever a New Romantic, but I did used to have a lot of perms back in the day. Ironically, these days my hair has gone naturally wavy when I want it to be straight.

So, for today's ARFO, how about one of the following:

    BALLROOM BLITZ by The Sweet

BEDS ARE BURNING by Midnight Oil

And one that popped into my head earlier in the week, a bit off the wall and cheesy but in for a penny...:

    THE BUMP by Kenny

Harry - what have you done now? *goes off to check yesterday's blog*

    Morning Simon and bloggers-all

I too was a New Romantic and my very first concert was Spandau Ballet at Wembly Arena ... ahh those were the days . Mind you - I saw them twice again last year and they were pretty darn good all these years on. Talking of the 80s - I'm off to Duran Duran and George Michael in December and saw Bon Jovi in June - so it's a big '80s' year for me musically!

I did have a perm. Once. It was hideous!

In that vein how about some 80s big-hair rock to start us off on ARF:

You Give Love a Bad Name - Bon Jovi

Happy Birthday Paul of Sheffield :)

Morning all! And a very grey one it is to around the Pudsey area.

How about a little "Birdhouse in Your Soul" by They Might Be Giants, to brighten up this dull day?

For those who feel there hasn't been many U2 selections this week you could always go for "City of Blinding Lights".

Maybe back later but busy day today as off on hols next week!

    Morning all

Crikey, were Flock of Numbskulls, as one of my university friends referred to them, considered to be New Romantics?

  • Comment number 25.

After serious deliberation my ARF is:

    WHAM - FREEDOM

I wish I was a teenager in the eighties... I was actually just a little nipper, although I do remember more music from that era than the nineties. I won a fancy dress competition as a child in the eighties, dressed as Strawberry Shortcake which largely comprised of two huge red ra ra skirts (one as a sort of smock top, one as a skirt). With a large pillow on my head in the shape of a strawberry.

  • Comment number 26.

    Morning all,

And a very special one to POS - hope beer and curry is in the offing for your Birthday?

I'm glad to hear the naughty step was in use on the last blog - if only 'cos I was not around, so the blame cannot be on me, for a change!

Someone else must've egged Harry on...

Interested in the 80's discussion in the Blog, but for me, musically, the real time for my music taste formation was the 70's - it was while I was at school & Uni, and by the early 80's, I was in a job, then seemed to spend the rest of the 80's 'washing my hair' - ie bringing up a family!

However, I did posess a couple of Rara dresses..still had the legs, in those days ;-)

Oo and yes, had a crazy blonde mop of permed hair (Robert Plant was my ♥throb)

Here's a suggestion, for the ARFO - some bands that were around in the 70's and 80's:

    MEDICINE JAR by WINGS or

MISTY MOUNTAIN HOP by Led Zep

Yes, you guessed it, my ipod is currently stuck on 'M'

Have a lovely weekend everyone, 'specially the birthday boy

Mum still doing fine and thank you for the kind thoughts and wishes.

Am doing an afternoon visit today - leaving the evening free for a glass or three of something grapey and giggle-inducing.

Hope to be back in time for ARF so I might request a couple of Openers, not that I have a hope in heck of them being chosen. Curiously enough, they are from the 80s ..

I've put it on FB for the curious :-)

Good Morning all and thank you Simon for playing one of my selections yesterday for the 'Queen in Oz' topic, I feel honoured.

    AMERICAN WOMAN - GUESS WHO

JACK & DIANE - JOHN MELLENCAMP

Ahhhhhh Simon, now you're talking my language .....

The 80s. The decade of my awakening, men in make up, frilly shirts and pedal pushers. Lovely! In fact, just last night I watched a programme recorded from Sky Arts with Simon Le Bon and Nick Rhodes about Duran Duran's early videos. Pure and utter unadulterated GOLD!

See, I've gone all swoony swishy giddy mare now!

And yes, I'm also seeing the Duran combo in December (Manchester) will fellow CLP Blogger Jakeygirl.

    And so to ARF ......

I was going to plump for

    ROCKS - PRIMAL SCREAM

but in the light of my swoony swishy giddy mare status, I shall opt for:-

    THE REFLEX - DURAN DURAN

Once a Durannie, always a Durannie!

#37 I have a naughty confession, every time I am behind a man with a ponytail, say on a bus, or on an escalator I have an awful urge to produce a pair of scissors and silently snip it off!

Also have to say that the BIG RED button on escalators which says 'only press in case of emergency' draws me like a cliff edge towards it!

Maybe Harry should shift up a bit, for us that just have naughty urges...ooo er

  • Comment number 39.

I remember seeing a live Duran Duran show from the Hammersmith Palais on the telly sometime in the 80s. The over-riding impression was "they can really play, which is a shame because you can't actually hear it underneath of all the screaming".

I do own a best-of, and the Wedding Album because Ordinary World is a gorgeous song and their best by a country mile.

Are/were the Duranies New Romantic? If so I think that's probably the complete extent of my New Romantic collection.

  • Comment number 40.

The 80's were my teenage years and early twenties and I recall perming my already wavy hair and ending up with a style reminiscent of a poodle crossed with Jon Bon Jovi in his massive hair phase but I remember loving it at the time! I did like the New Romantics but was also a fan of the big haired rockers and the more quirky stuff that was around too, my music taste was and still is eclectic.

I do know I danced around my bedroom (probably singing into a hairbrush) to this one, which I thought had some quite daring lyrics at the time (hilarious when you hear the songs now) so I choose as my ARFO today ...

    CENTREFOLD - J. GEILS BAND

p.s. #27 - Katy, I love that Teardrop Explodes song and haven't heard it for eons so fingers crossed for that too.

#34 Thanks Dougal - your Limerick is on file - along with a couple of others that have been submitted.

That doesn't include yours, Harry. Made me smile. A lot. Wondered how long it would be allowed to stand before a twitchy beebwomble took action. LOL.

I hope no-one minds me just collecting the submitted Limericks without a by-your-leave!

We haven't really had a consensus on this - or even an agreement that Limericks might be a fun competition.

Please, if anyone else has a good idea - just shout out.

And Harry - if you want to keep the list, or even be the judge [although I guessed you may want to enter] I'll liaise with you via Fb

  • Comment number 43.

The 80's just wasn't for me

No perms or make up you see

    The Beatles were best

    The Stones and the rest

The 60's are my cup of tea!

    Well it's a start! x

  • Comment number 44.

#42 Katy, I won't be entering, and I certainly don't want to judge anyone, but I'm looking forward to reading them all.

Part of my censored post did say that I once contemplated writing to slebs to ask for their favourite limerick. It never amounted to anything. I always thought it would make a great charity book.

Incidently, one of the Baring-Goulds (William, I think?) wrote a book on limericks which is where I first came across the "Plumber from Leigh". In that book he also recorded a French version which worked perfectly, too. Worth seeking out if you like that sort of thing.

Maybe, if we can see all the entered limericks together, we could vote for the one we like the best? Just an idea if no one wants to be the judge. And I think, Katy, that as the entries are already rolling in we can take the consensus as read.. it's a good, fun idea.

Still have my thunking cap on in regards to my contribution but I'm having trouble rhyming anything with Led Zepellin!!! ;-)

#50 I remember when Rod Stewart's 'Tonight's the night' was censored by the bbc, and we had to hear it under bed covers, on a trannie radio via Radio Luxembourg...

ps heard the mentioned Rod Stewart track on R2 the other day - how times have changed!

I blame my New Romantic influences, but to this day I get quite hot under the collar for a bit of eyeliner!

#54 Autumn_Gale, I couldn't disagree more! I have a 'thing' about hands, it's something I tend to notice about people when I first meet them. And on men, I like to see nice neat, clean and not too long nails. Definitely no varnish *shudders* But then, wouldn't life be boring if we all had the same tastes.

Incidentally, our esteemed leader has nice hands.

    Afternoon all

First chance to blog all week as trying to catch up after hols, which were nice after a tricky start (technical fault, return to Manchester on plane, blue lights on runway!, overnight stay in Mcr, nice flight next morning.)

I see that the naughty step is in use again!

    Can I suggest

WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN - THE STYLE COUNCIL

a good 80's tune if not realy in a new romantic vein.

Mt teen years were through the 80's and I went from a Ska 2tone white shirt and pressed trousers, to long hair denim and hard rock. Still love both, but the hair has def gone now!

    Cheers

#59 Andy: You've just made me think of Madness with your Ska reference so how about

Madness by Madness for the ARFO

could just about sum us all up (in the nicest possible way of course!!!!)

    Mrs B xx

PS Sorry was that TOO many !'s?

38 Susie... you mentioned escalators, so I must own up to a daft craze I like to do on escalators (well my husband thinks it's daft) since first being dared to do it at C & A in Bristol many years ago, after telling a friend I had a yearning to do it!

I love running up a down-escalator, even though I'm no spring chicken, that doesn't stop me as long as the steps are empty!!! The last time I did it was at Zurich airport a couple of Christmases ago and I encouraged someone I had befriended on our holiday who was on our flight and stayed in the same hotel... and loads of people cheered when we reached the top!!!

Has anyone on here ever run up a down-escalator, or has a daft craze/hobby? :o))

    xx

LOL Lucies Mum, I do similar on those moving walkway things that they have at Disneyland and other type places. Its really funny going the wrong way, as you stay in the same place!

Right early start for me today, so wish everyone well, with thier ARF choices.

Its going to be mad out there, I may be a while.

    Cheers me Dears.

    Hi Simon,

Please can we have HEAVEN IN MY HANDS by LEVEL 42 as the ARFO.

    thanks,

  • Comment number 65.

#61 Do that on the London Underground and you'll get a harsh penalty and fine!

    :^D

  • Comment number 66.

#63 Ta Deebs - it's in the LimFile.

If Simon does agree to judge the final 5 - and yours about him is one of them ... modesty may prevail.

Just a note - for those that are participating in this fun - after the deadline - any objections if I show the anonymous offerings to a COMPLETELY NEUTRAL PERSON to form a shortlist? I would of course let you know who this completely neutral person is.

    ;^)

  • Comment number 67.

#61, oh yes, running up a down escalator, fun cardio exercise. Just ignore the funny looks...

  • Comment number 68.

#66 Thanks KatyMatey. Don't worry - it's the taking part, not the winning...

    Afternoon everyone.

I have just received a telephone call from an accountancy practice in Stourbridge, West Midlands inviting me to an interview on Friday 4th November......I only posted it yesterday! I thought they would have recruited by now as it was posted on the internet on 6th October! They specifically requested a handwritten application...obviously my handwriting must have knocked them out!!!

Also, my recruitment consultant at Reed is putting me forward for a 9 month contract at a firm in Wolverhampton, the former above is Permanent role.

    So everything crossed again!!!!

Goos ARFternoon Each! And HAPPY TRAFALGAR DAY!

I must seem terribly rude not popping by before now, but I have been incredibly busy in the shop. Thank you all for the kind wishes on my birthday, I really appreciate it. It must be said, the kindness on this blog is most gratifying. Most of my birthday wishes at this end seem to have been derogative comments pertaining to high(ish) numbers. I can't understand it. I am as sprightly as I was in my twenties, when I'm upright. And horizontal, come to that. It does seem to take a bit more effort moving between those two latitudes, however, and it is at that point, THAT POINT, when my 54 years begin to show. Still, at least my brain doesn't seem to be aging. Oh, hang on, I don't mean aging, I mean developing any degree of maturity. Wouldn't want that.

Beer and curry? Seems like a plan. Luey (Mrs PoS, for those that don't know), is actually somewhere in France. Went yesterday, back Sunday, so the birthday celebrations, such as they will be, are actually delayed until her return. There are advantages to letting your loved one desert you for a boozy few days a la francaise, mainly concerned with the re-earning of brownie points. My plans are already laid. ;0)

ARF request? I'm far too late, but it would have been

    'Baby Jump' by Mungo Jerry

thus showing that most of that new romantic tosh passed me by.

Thanks again for the good wishes, and the cake.

The headache has finally gone and the braincells are working . . . Just had another fantastic suggestion for a starting track, it follows on from the news of late and is very topical too.

Spandau Ballet - Through the Barricades (1986)

I don't think they had afros but the eyeliner and frills were very much the moment and definitely 80's.

    Happy singing

  • Comment number 79.

    Hi again!

Happy Birthday to Paul and good luck to Mandy on the interviews, although why you would want to work for an accountancy firm escapes me! By the way as I write I am studiously ignoring all the accounts and tax returns collecting around my desk.

Happy blogging all and see you all in a week or so. Disneyland Paris is apparently calling me.

    Welcome Sharon.

#71 Sounds like your birthday will be lasting a while Paul! Hope it's a good one.

You can call him Al now he's homeward bound

The train in the distance is coming on round

    There's something so right

    Leaving lovers in the night

Paul's poetry endures like a silent sound.

Not sure it makes sense so I'll call it poetic license and leave it there!

#72 LMum - Yesterday's blog #111 was just my suggestion - but most people seem to be riding with it!

#76 Thank you sweet Paul - I believe you've written a few in your mayoblog life, yes?

#75 Deebs - a heart-stopping moment? A private rendition of 'Thank You' from Robert 'Percy' Plant please.

Moved to a county down south. It weren't Devon,

And if you're there, and you're ill,

    He's a man with a musical pill,

But to get it, you have to hospitalise yourself on a Tuesday evening.
