What ho!

Simon Mayo|08:17 UK time, Friday, 16 September 2011

HA! Friday already and a jolly good one it'll be too. Cool and cloudy around the estate (now grass free after the teenage tramping of last weekend) but warmth on the way so maybe hang on to the summer trousers for a while yet. I wore winter trousers last week by mistake and felt heavy all day.

In my rush to avoid the tyranny of the warden I didn't mention Wednesday's gig by Silver Seas which was recommended to me and, as I have had their album for a while, didn't take much persuading. They are from Nashville and are too mainstream for 6 Music but , I suspect, a little too 6 for 2. If you see what I mean. But they are terrific and well worth seeking out. And they finished at 9.45! Time for a crème de menthe and home before 11. Simple, middle-aged pleasures.

Today is 5/2 day with Gary Oldman in for the movie show on 5 Live from 2 which is VERY GOOD NEWS indeed. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy opens today and what a top cast there is. Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Toby Jones, John Hurt and Benedict Cumberbatch et al have produced a really compelling film. It is a slow, cerebral affair which I fear I shall have to see again before I follow every nuanced, raised eyebrow. It is set in 1973 but feels like 1963; when the spies have a Christmas party and Mud come on the speakers, it's quite a shock (this is an under-reviewed moment in the film). I never saw the TV version (but I notice it has re-appeared on DVD) so cannot compare, but this is still a million miles from the kind of spy drama we have been used to in recent years and well worth the monstrous outlay of a trip to your local popcorn dispenser.

Then to the non-stop hit-machine that is the all request Friday and that song of yours which entitles you to wear the ARFO crown for at least a week. Be inspired.

Have a breezy and optimistic Friday, see you at 2 and/or 5 on 5 and/or 2.

    Good Morning All

Simon, maybe if Radio 2 has another 2Day you'll have the opportunity to play a bit of Silver Seas. Sounds like they're worth a listen. Really looking forward to seeing 'Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy'. I vaguely remember the TV version, but found it somewhat confusing...

Off to work - will poop back with my ARFO once I've battled with the Cambridge traffic.

Very quiet round here this morning!

Simon, we're going to see TTSS next week - really looking forward to it! I vaguely remember the TV series, but didn't take much notice of it.

Off to think up an ARFO!

    Hi Simon and blogsters.

ooo gigs, just reminded me no long to go now before seeing the main man Mr Adams at LG Arena (I still call it the NEC!)...Simon as his UK leg of his tour starts Nov/Dec are you having him in again, if so I will wear I player out!! Also if you do, you will be able to talk about fatherhood as I believe he now has a mini me!!

And I forgot to say yesterday, regarding Chow Mein....twas my very 1st chinese meal at the age of 22, bought on company expenses on a Audit in Redditch when I was an Audit Trainee.....it is true what they say about Chinese food....full after 10 minutes and then empty again!

Finally before my ARFO suggestions has anyone been receiving loads of "bounced emails" which had previously successfully been sent to the intended recipient in the past? Also, have your friends and family been receiving rogue emails from your email address which obviously you never sent? Seems to be happening with Yahoo accounts? Think I may have to update my anti virus on my Iphone!

And now for the important business:

    1.GENO - Dexys Midnight Runners

    2. EYE OF THE TIGER - Survivor

    3. ACE OF SPADES - Motorhead ( sorry for the absence of the Umlaut!)

    4. I GET KNOCKED DOWN - Chumbawumba

    5. LETS GET ROCKED - Def Leppard

Catch ya later and have a wonderful Friday feeling kinda day!

    Mandy ;)

Good morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppeteers

I think after that intro Simon, my ARFO will have to be

    Tiger Feet by Mud

And if you are playing word of the day - my offering will have to be keeping on the parrot theme (see end of last blog)

Biloquist - the ability to speak in 2 distinct voices. Jocko can do plenty of voices but his favourites are of course Mr W and yours truly.

Have a lovely Friday everyone and catch you later.

A quick good morning. I'm going to catch up a bit on the end of yesterday's blog and think of ARFO.

Long day here ... and not an entirely happy one as this evening we have a memorial service for one of our students who was murdered this summer. The re-opening of wounds is always painful.....

However I come to the blog for a 'happy place', so will think of uplifting ARFOs and look forward to the usual banter and humour from the daily bloggers :)

Love and Kisses to all and best wishes to those who have poorly people at the moment.

    Morning one and all,

missed all the chat yesterday have not had time to read through as I am way behind with work....had an impromptu, teary catching up yesterday with an old friend, we were drifting apart due to 'issues' and this meet and shout and cry has helped to clear the air........taking a lunch to another friend who is a bit down in the dumps today so won't be on for much as I need to catch up.

Thanks to all this week with their words of wisdom in respect to return of eldest daughter - very much appreciated.

Good thoughts to all those who have difficult and trying times ahead....

Harry the Snapper - Chris Evans had Peter Kay on this morning and Peter chose 'I love to Love'! I had a wee sing song (out of tune) and a wee dance (out of step).

    ARFO for tonight.....

Baccara - Yes Sir, I can Boogie.......

after hearing 'I love to love' both are now in my head - they go together form the 1st Year disco at secondary school as they were the modern studies teacher who was DJ's fave songs!

Good Morning Each! I've been so busy of late, I have had very little time to blog, but lurking has taken place. I don't think that I could survive without a little bit of the security blanket of the Simon Mayo blog, every day. There was a hideous story in the news recently about internet trolling. The things that some horrible individuals get up to online just beggars belief, and the fact that this trolling activity is widespread enough to have it's own name is just appalling.

This blog is the opposite of all that is wrong online. It shines out as a community of different characters bound together only by an appreciation of Simon and his show, and exudes such an atmosphere of geniality and warmth, it ought to be available on the NHS. Just popping by every now and then, even when time constraints have meant that I haven't partaken as much as I would like, and having a read of the banter and goings on in here, is quite life affirming. I would congratulate you all, but that would seem to suggest that you had all been vying for some sort of accollade, which is far from what happens here. This is just a lovely, warm place, populated by some lovely sharing people. I love it.

I will be busy again today (I hope), but will at least be lurking again, and will try to nip in and out every now and then.

Good luck with the ARF requests. I won't post one on here, but I do have a goody, so even though I will be polishing up the ARFO crown, ready for the next head, I suspect that I won't be able to resist a quick tweet.

Thanks, everyone, just for being here.

  • Comment number 13.

    Good morning everyone.

Now, my ARFO request: I don't keep asking for this just to be a nuisance (or that I'm still madly in love with Wendy James after almost 30 years). I'm requesting it because I think it meets all the criteria (as set out by the Lord himself some time ago) of the opening record to get Friday night and the weekend off to a steering wheel-drumming start. So please, give it a go:

I WANT YOUR LOVE by TRANSVISION VAMP

#4 Shona, good word ................. a bit like my Mom on the telephone and I now have a word for it :-)

#9 Sparky ................ sure that was meant for me? I'm not the Tina Charles fan - she always seemed a bit big-sisterish for my tastes :-)

  • Comment number 14.

Of course, my biggest thanks must go to Simon, for the time he takes everyday to give us a blog on which to meet. Respect, owd lad!

  • Comment number 24.

#12 Paul - what a lovely post! And so true - I love the diversity of this blog, the varied discussions, the different characters and personalities that populate it. It never fails to deliver. It's such a great place to 'hang out', be comforted, have a laugh. And some of you lovely people have become friends in the real world - and hopefully some more will in the future. I also find it kind of special how Simon takes such an interactive part in the blog - not only giving us his words of wisdom each day, but commenting on things we've discussed, mentioning the blog on the show, and so on. Makes me feel part of something quite exceptional.

#23 Sparky, no need to apologise; I'm happy to be tarnished with a 70s brush! Especially from someone, such as yourself, who clearly has impeccable taste :-D

    Morning all,

I agree with Simon - still in summer trousers. Nothing worse than being sweaty behind the knees all day, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Is anybody else at the same point with their kids - back to school for a couple of full weeks now, novelty of seeing friends has worn off, homework overload, getting tired, cold germs swirling round, and mornings getting darker. It's enough to make me want to book a holiday.

Today I'm offering up a smorgasbord of ARFO auggestions, some old, some new, some recycled. Am having a haircut this afternoon, in anticipation of needing a tidy tonsure for that crown...

JOHNNY B GOODE - Chuck Berry

SINCE YOU BEEN GONE - Rainbow

GET OFF OF MY CLOUD - Rolling Stones

    SHE'S NOT THERE - Santana

"B" word of the day: boustrophedon

Meaning: writing where the reading direction changes from right-to-left to left-to-right every line.

(figuratively) changing direction, going back and forth

Origin: "bous" = ox "strophe" = turning

So it's like ox are ploughing a field, walking one way then turning at the end and walking back the other. Or mowing a lawn.

    https://wackyweirdandwonderful.com/to-read-faster-boustrophedon/

Not sure how you use this in everyday conversation. Apparently it's most used in techie circles, because it's how modern printers work to print a document.

    Good morning,

Thanks for the mensh last night! I think it was my first one since my birthday weekend ARFO. As it happens yesterday was our 11th wedding anniversary - but as Mr 40 (38 actually) was in Rome on business the mensh was the only bit of celebrating - so thank you again! Congrats to others - heard Andy and Billie's. And thanks for congrats on lost blog.

Paul o S, AG and Deebee -lovely posts about this 'ere blog my lovelies. All the talk in the media this week about trolling made me once again think what a warm and friendly place this is. Thank you bloggers old and new for making it that way.

Shona, I hope that he does take up your ARFO suggestion of 'Tiger Feet'. I tried that one last week. I would also like to second Mandy's excellent 'Geno' choice- great tune!

#12 POS who said men weren't in touch with their emotions? Lovely post and surely said what we all think.

BILLIOUS is my B word, as I was described as it a child BUT in retrospect I think it's because I had a scottish mother who never ever threw food away and would keep, re-heat etc until it was carbonated - in fact that would have been preferable to some of the concoctions she threw together!

I used 'baloney' as a word to describe the pathetic excuse, that my 17 year old was using for not tidying his room. I drew a very blank look!

Just a quick pop in before I read back to catch up.

Arfo selection ; Bad Moon Rising - Creedance Clearwater Revival (Must check spelling)

  • Comment number 70.

#58 Shouldn't that be two ls?

#62 That is good news. Must admit I've been going off Chris' show a bit - I rather feel that he's dropped the ball of late (if that's the right expression). Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for him as a person - I've read both his books, he's addressed his demons and come out the other side. And I've met him a couple of times, and found him to be lovely! But maybe he's getting complacent, now his breakfast show is a well established part of Radio 2's weekday lineup. So if he or any of his team see this, they should take it as constructive criticism. If I thought DT was slacking at all I'd say the same thing about Simon. If it wasn't for him being perfect (well, apart from his obsession with a certain girl band...)

#53 it is Ken good job you are here with your red pen handy!!

I blame the stress and flash backs to the run in with the idiots for my poor spelling!!! Well thats my story and I'm sticking to it!!

  • Comment number 73.

#56 Suzie, bilious is a word I haven't seen used in years. Whenever I was off school the note my mom sent me back with often referred to a "bilious attack" and it always sounded far more serious than my actual complaint.

As for time off, Mrs Snapper has offered to cover the shop for on Monday so I'll be having a rest then. Still have to get up at 4.30 on Sunday though!

  • Comment number 74.

#66 my last boss used 'blimey' all the time...not a word I've heard in a while.

  • Comment number 75.

    #65 Baffies!

Can't wait to get mine on when I get home, especially since I had a new carpet laid in hall etc - shame is Mr e likes to hang onto his bloomin' shoes till he's got through the house to the dining room.

Any ideas from the chaps (or esses, if they've experience on the matter) on the blog on how to get him to adopt the habit 'remove shoes on the doormat' without sounding like his mum?!

I was informed last night that we are leaving for our 'romantic anniversary trip' to the Amalfi coast' at 4am...I said 'there is nowt romantic about that'. I am known as a non-morning person. To me, that's the middle of the bloomin night!

Morning all late again but I have a good excuse, honest!

    ARFO suggestions from me include:

    U2 - Vertigo

Big Country - In a Big Country

The Waterboys - Whole of the Moon

The Mighty Wah - Story of the Blues.

    Enough for now?

Am I allowed to say that I am looking forward to next weel already, once the eldest is back at university. Nice to see him once in a while but the constant requests to keep his room or indeed the house tidy are getting a bit wearisome!

    Have a cheery weekend.

    BUMBLE

My 'B' word - always makes me smile (don't know why)

  • Comment number 88.

#66 & #74 - I'm an avid user of 'blimey' and in a similar vein of 'gawd' too - when I used them both together, gawd blimey!, you'd better watch out!! lol ;-)

  • Comment number 89.

#88 when I was 15, I spent the summer with my best friend and her Canadian auntie/uncle/cousins and of course various friends...you have NO idea how I was pilloried for using terms such as 'crikey' 'gawd blimey' 'good grief' to name but a few - the local teenagers had a great laugh at my expense!

At the BBQ they had for our arrival, we were surrounded by people asking us to 'talk' so they could hear our UK accents...embarrasing for a shy 15 year old! Oh and I had my first taste of pumpkin pie, which I didn't like at all!!

  • Comment number 90.

    bunkum

    buttress

billabong one of those words that is pleasant to say over and over in a 'Miranda-esque' kind of way. And it can be spelt with two 'll's' or one 'l' unlike belligerent! ;-) (Deebs, you were quite right. I blame it on the ELH delivery driver who had just turned up as I was just composing the post- hence the rush!)

Favorite b word has to be BLOGPOPPETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 95.

#65 - Mo, I'd never heard of baffies before (had to look it up!) you learn something new every day on this 'ere blog :-)

#89 - Suzie, I'm with you on the pumpkin pie... yuk! We lived in America for a few years and it was definitely something to be avoided. Our accents were a constant source of amazement and amusement to the locals - when they'd figured out we weren't Australian!! :-S

    #94 - Mrs B, definitely a winner there!

  • Comment number 96.

#77 & #93 MTF and PSL, you flatter me ........... but I do like it :-)

Until recently, I thought we'd made up this word but Mrs Snapper and myself do like doing it .................... Bimble (v); to amble without real aim, in a friendly and harmless manner.

  • Comment number 97.

#94 LOL Mrs Boris, how could we have all missed that one!

  • Comment number 98.
