Their Satanic Majesties Request... (or the IT lot want you).

Simon Mayo|08:59 UK time, Wednesday, 14 September 2011

Hello, good morning and welcome to our lovely blog. It's Wednesday, so automatically things are looking up. When I was stuck unhappily at one of my secondary schools, reaching Wednesday was always a good feeling as we were half way to the weekend. That feeling has never really left me and I still sometimes think of Monday and Tuesday as being the ogres of the week. Well the ogres are defeated for another week and Wednesday is dawning sunny and still here.

On the subject of computer rage and frustration which we were addressing yesterday, a solution has been found. Did it come from an expensive IT department equipped with the latest ideas and technology? No it did not. Did it come from studying the web advice and e-mailing the companies involved in producing this monstrous piece of nonsense? No, it really did not. It came from my own IT team, child 1 and child 3 who remembered a laptop with older software on it. And hey presto! Computer speaks peace to computer. All it needed was out-dated kit and sons. Priceless.

And on the subject of roundabouts and assorted irritations on the road which was being being discussed here yesterday, surely there is nothing worse than most drivers' inability to know how to turn right at a crossroads? Oh. Just me then.

So today we roll with Mick Jagger as our guest after 6. Dave Stewart told us about this superheavy band he put together with Mick and Joss Stone et al a few weeks ago, so now it's the turn of the front man to tell us more. Yes it really is Mick Jagger on Drivetime today.

And as for oldies, it's time for DINOSAURS I think. Tonight sees a new TV show on BBC1 called Planet Dinosaur narrated by John Hurt and featuring a whole lot of stomping snarling and fighting from new dinosaurs, freshly discovered, such as the Spinosaurus who was 17 metres long - apparently. Which is almost as big as Rebecca's yacht.

Have a perceptive and insightful Wednesday (nearly Thursday).

#27 Interesting comment, Ken. Didn't hear any of the show yesterday. Hope to "listen again" at some point but not hopeful.

Simon is obviously very intelligent, and a master interviewer and broadcaster. Anyone who listened to his 5Live 9/11 show on Sat can testify to that. But he is also very good at his DT show and seems to thrive on the banter amongst the team (and I include us in that). So if he's making himself and 5 million others happy every Mon - Fri (or Thurs if you're not an ARF fan), then does it matter that he is "too intelligent"? I personally would like to hear him do more of other things, but not to the detriment of DT.

I have a good mind to say 'get stuffed' and head off to the cinema with younger daugher!

I was going to suggest WALK THE DINOSAUR, WAS NOT WAS but noticed that Andy has already suggested it, please may I second that (e)motion?

    I'd also like to suggest:-

    20th CENTURY BOY - T-REX

Funnily enough, Simon, yesterday I was turning right at a crossroads and the chap who was turning left waved me on to make my turn first. I knew it was his right of way but who am I to start the very irritating exchange of me waving him on only for him to insist I should go first, followed by me insisting even harder that he should go and mouthing "It's your right of way *expletive deleted*!", followed by him shaking his head at my ungratefulness.

Anyhoo, off to catch up on what's going down on this 'ere blog.

Mandy - I'm sure you'll soon be snapped up; good luck anyhoo.

Sparky - blimey that's a tricky one. I'd let the daughter be for now as I'm sure in a couple of weeks' time she'll realise just how much she's missing her Mummy and will want to make up for the time she's missed. Easier said than done I'm sure. My older boy may be flying the nest next year - long story but if he gets a Year in Industry he may end up in Edinburgh living with his dad for a year before going to uni - was a bit upset when that was put up for consideration. The thing that's keeping me going is the company he's looking at doing a YiI with also has a place five minutes from where I work.

Chris had been explaining the difference between Chicago blues and gospel blues, and demonstrated a gospel blues melody and Simon instantly got how Road to Hell fitted in with that. Rea was suitably impressed.

Some of what he said is scary though for the future of music though. No money in it any more.

    Has the mensh chasing abated?

#57 Ken, "no money in it any more"? Was there ever much money in music for the vast majority of musicians?

Do you remember those little "skull and crossbone" cassette symbols they used to print on record sleeves? "Home taping is killing music" it said. What they meant, of course, was that talentless record industry executives were making a little less.

With easily copyable computer files it has forced the rich few to do what most musicians had done all along; play live gigs to make a living! And, aren't all our lives enriched by live music?

  • Comment number 64.

    #45 Sparky

I've had a bit of experience in this field - so am happy to share ..

Is this her first visit 'home'? If so - then what happens will set a precedent for future visits, so you need to box clever.

You mentioned 'do the washing' - I take it she is unable to do her laundry in her residence or a local launderette? - so she has to bring it home?

If that is the case - I NEVER did my daughters' [both] washing for them. Instead I was overjoyed to see them, made all their favourite food etc. etc. and indicated, quite genuinely [obviously] how happy I was to have them home for the weekend.

I also invited them to use the washing machine/tumble dryer etc. whilst they were there - in the house and made it clear that this wouldn't be done for them.

But if she sticks with her plans over the weekend - visiting boyfriend and his folks, etc.- then just make sure you, too, are very busy all weekend - like you said - but with a big loving motherly smile, not the 'get stuffed'. LOL

You may not believe this, but she'll thank you for it.

I've been meaning to get back to Billie’s thread about songs with dubious lyrics: how many songs seem to excuse violence against women? We’ve already discussed Delilah but another one is “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town”:

“And if I could move I'd get my gun

And put her in the ground”

All I can say is: it’s a good thing that he can’t move! It’s no wonder she’s off seeing another bloke with that threat of violence hanging around the house!

And, Tom Jones seems to specialise in portraying wimpish men ..............

“It's not unusual to be loved by anyone

It's not unusual to have fun with anyone

But when I see you hanging about with anyone

It's not unusual to see me cry,

    Oh I wanna' die”

I'm getting paranoid - this is the 6th time I've tried to post this (I'm making it shorter)....

Morning everyone - still glowing from my first mention last night :)

#45 Sparkyhunter - my advice, on the back of spending all day every day with teenage girls, is to make your point by saying you'd like to see a bit more of her when she's home as you'd hoped you could go shopping, the cinema etc, but put the washing in anyway - tell her you've done it but she will need to take it out/iron it. In my experience she'll be grateful even if she doesn't show it immediately and next time (well, at some point) she'll remember your support and be nicer...... I'm pushing 40, have lived on my own for years but when I go home my Mum still does my washing and ironing; I'm taking her to New York next month as a treat, it works out OK in the end :)

This is a tough oldies topic:

2nd/3rd calls for T-Rex - Hot Love is particular fave and Monster - The Automatic

    I'll add:

Beauty and the Beast - David Bowie

    Force of Nature - Oasis

Since you mentioned the wind, #65 Deebee, and this is a blog of wildlife lovers, this morning when I looked out of the back door, I saw a huge webbed footed bird that looked like he was sheltering from the wind, between a plant pot and the house, and I think it was a young seagull. He seemed OK as he soon ran along the garden path followed by my Bassets sniffing around him, then he leapt on the wall and took off!

    https://farm7.static.flickr.com/6071/6146110565_570ba3c49d_z.jpg

My husband, said thank goodness for that as we seem to have been home for abandoned or injured birds for ages, with the rescued baby pigeon in July (Woody) that stayed here for a month, being spoilt with warm peas and sweetcorn and it took four attempts for him to leave home -- three times he was back by the evening and he was very gentle and became really tame and liked to sit on my hand to feed.

    https://farm7.static.flickr.com/6005/5939709762_cd997635e9_z.jpg

Woody comes back most days and sits on the lawn to feed with some collared doves he's befriended (he's still too young to have the white marks on his neck and comes close to me, so I know it's him).

Last week I was walking past my friend's stables with my dogs, when his kids shouted to me that the stable cat had grabbed a pigeon and made his wing bleed and he couldn't fly, so I noticed it was a juvenile pigeon and picked him up, put him into a doggy bag and took him home.

    https://farm7.static.flickr.com/6157/6146660132_642ec1557d_z.jpg

I put him in the cage that was in our garage when we moved here (a good job we kept it), and put TCP on his wing and bathed it and put Savlon cream on it several times a day and once it looked to be healed, I let him go and he flew out across the fields away from cats, hopefully!

  • Comment number 74.

Pertinent songs by Dinosaur Jr, Queens Of The Stone Age or Tyrannosaurus Rex, of course.

Isn't it cheeky to have "dinosaurs" as a theme and an interview with Mick Jagger, when the Rolling Stones surely must have been one of the list of "dinosaur bands" during the days of punk, or was it just the bands that "progged" more than they "rocked" like Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd?

JOHNNY CASH, KESHA and KING CRIMSON have all recorded songs called "DINOSAUR" .

"ALLEY OOP" by the HOLLYWOOD ARGYLES

"ROCK WITH THE CAVEMAN" by TOMMY STEELE & THE STEELMEN

  • Comment number 75.

KatyM - you are so wise. I'd be daft enough to do the washing and ironing. I definitely agree to hold back on the 'get stuffed' sentiment, Sparky. As hurtful as your daughter's plans are to you, she probably takes for granted all the things her wonderful Mum does for and would be mortified to think she had hurt you in any way. There is the always chance that not all her plans will come off, you know what teenagers are like for changing their mind. I'm ashamed to say my Mum did all the cooking, cleaning, washing and ironing til I left home aged 25. Having said that I soon adapted and managed to do these chores myself (not to Mum's standard tho').

Daughters and uni...... my eldest lasted FOUR nights in halls and came home sniff sniff hated it. She had a car and was able to commute...we just went into damage limitation mode and wrote the £3,300 up-front non-returnable fee for an empty room off...OUCH!!( funny how I still remember the amout after 6 years...)

.....she graduated with a 2:1 so it all turned out ok in the end...

  • Comment number 79.

True #77 Toots, but I really felt quite sad when Woody left for the first time and stayed out all night, making me worry for him as I would for a teenager and I was outside the front and back garden looking for him all the time. My husband, who thinks I'm bonkers anyway, was even more convinced of my 'bonkerness' after I first saw Woody return and was sitting on the house roof, because I rang him from the garden, when he was at work and rather excitedly shrieked "Woody's back!" He said "...and you rang me at work just to tell me that!"

Quite tough theme for todays tunes and I need another cup of tea first.

    Take care all. xx

#59 MTF [and Deebs later] Thanks for the thanks for the scarf and hat. I honestly don't expect people to HAVE to say thanks personally - and wouldn't be at all offended if they didn't.

As for my scarf today MTF - decided to cut out the middleman and pop it straight around my neck x

#60 Always good fun, Kev. How fast does that hour go by? Whoosh! Great 80s tracks BTW x

    Good afternoon,

Oh, struggling with this theme. As dinosaurs are no longer here:

SLIP, SLIDIN' AWAY by Simon & Garfunkel

IT'S ALL OVER NOW by The Rolling Stones (looking forward to hearing Mick Jagger)

    Or maybe:

GO WILD IN THE COUNTRY by Bow Wow Wow

Sparky, A tough thing for sure. Lots of good advice given above. All I will say is boyfriends will come and go but you will always be her mum.

    Have a good day.x

#86 - Hey Julia - Re: advice to Sparky - never a truer word spoken. You are most definitely having a 'perceptive and insightful day' as prescribed by Mr M.

Morning my lovelies...............I agree with Simon that there is 'something' about a Wednesday that makes it different and special...............especially when the big yellow thingy is back in the sky..................plus the lovely Kevin is back on the telly tonight with a new series of GD (other programmes are available on other channels at the same time!!!)

Here goes to try and rectify my appalling mensh rate. Although I know it is the participating that counts ;0)

P.S Sparkyhunter it is really difficult juggling families. Just go with the flow and it will all work out. Plus the bf's family probably think that you are a wonderful Mum for being so understanding.

Oh my word, just caught up on yesterdays blog, it appears I got my first ever mensh - my life is complete! That's successfully wiped out the next couple of hours, which will now be spent listening to yesterdays show.

ps Laser quest was excellent!! Sweaty 10 year olds in the car on the way home, all highly amused by the noise a balloon makes when the air escapes - not so excellent.

MTF - comments about Glastonbury Tor, I can't put my finger on it either, its quite a magical place and I didn't want to leave, despite the gale force wind that was blowing on the day we were there.

Still no idea about tunes for today - other than those so far - second cup of tea hasn't helped.

''smile and do the washing, you are not low on the pecking order, you are above it and the moral high ground is a good - if precarious - place to be''.

Thank so so much for all the insights - you guys are fabulous! I like the moral high ground comment...... I think I will keep my gob shut and smile sweetly....she can iron it though b**g**r that for a game of marbles!

Lovely chat of wildlife and nature on the blog...gives a warm and fuzzy feeling....

#45,#51,#54, #62 & #84 Thank you Sparky Hunter, Toots, Tee Dot, Deebee & Matthew's Mum for thinking of me, and wishing me well for my meeting :)

I'm pleased to report that it all seemed to go very well, and I think we actually made some progress *Is very very cautiously optimistic* We are keeping our fingers crossed now for an extension of our extra help with the boys through until January 2012. I still think the system needs simplifying though, there are too many hoops to jump through, and most families with disabled children have neither the time nor the energy for it all.

#73 Lucies Mum - Lovely photo's and I applaud your pigeon saving endeavours. My mister has been tending to a white pigeon, which arrived in our garden on Monday. It looks like it has an injured leg, and the mister has been feeding and watering it while it gets it's strength back. Here's a photo of it...

#90 I'm sure I heard a mensh for you a week or so ago :-/ It might have been for biblical oldies, I could have sworn I heard your name read out for Delilah, although it could have been something else, I definitely heard your name menshed though.

#92 Zoe Double-Ewe - is that the "Dove from Above"? cooooo

    Quick poop back...

Lucies Mum, what a lovely post and pics. You did well, to look after the injured pigeon so well.

    Now here's the thing!

I've just been spending the last couple of hours, chopping, coring, and peeling yet more apples, honestly they are endless and the trees still look full of them... anyway, back to the point..

If you can get seedless grapes, how come they didn't do the same for the apple? It would save me hours of toil. Who fancies being resident 'scientist of the day?'

Likewise Zoe, what a handsome bird.

#90 & #93, I stand corrected Matthew's Mum (I looked it up) You got a mensh for the 'Showing Off' oldies for 'I'm A Wonderful Thing, Baby' - Kid Creole and the Coconuts. I hope you heard it back then :)

  • Comment number 98.

#96 MTF - I don't want to be "scientist of the day", white coats and all that but I g**gled seedless apples and found this: -

"There ain't agoing to be no core," said Tom Sawyer, but he was 80 years ahead of the times. The first coreless, seedless apples known to science were discovered only last year. Weighing a plump quarter-pound each, they grow on a freak tree in Mrs. Libbie Wilcox's backyard in Huntington Park, Calif.

This week the Department of Agriculture is working with the tree in the hope of making seedless apples as commonplace as seedless oranges. Since there are no seeds to plant, the new fruit must be propagated by grafts on normal apple trees.

    Interesting?

  • Comment number 99.

#94 & #96 Thanks, the mister says that it is a white pigeon, is that the same as a dove? I don't really know to be honest!

    Afternoon all

    Busy blog again!

Apologoes for the late arrival; IT issues first thing and then off-site meetings have kept me away.

Lovely pigeon pics - well done for looking after them so well.

No suggestions from me today - no time left to think of them.

    Hopefully back later

    Tortie x
