There you are

Simon Mayo|08:36 UK time, Monday, 22 August 2011

Well good morning to all you bloggers, assuming you are still there. It's not just paranoid insecurity that makes one wonder who might have drifted away in the last 3 weeks. There are many shows, many radio stations, many baubles and trinkets competing for your attention. They may have seduced you away. On the other hand, where else would you keep such company and enjoy such conversation? Precisely. Do other blogs offer you hats? No they do not. Can anywhere else run The Sweepstake Stakesweep? I think not.

So 3 weeks have shot by passed with an assortment of activities ranging from Suffolk sunshine, Tenerife sunshine, finishing something called a line-edit for the old book and toasting child 2 with some rather fine AS results. All undone last night by my stupidity of going away without my asthma inhaler. Cue nocturnal hours of wheezing and feeling sorry for myself. This fine morning however brings sunshine, fine air and clear lungs. Time for some work I think.

I trust Liza has looked after you well (but not too well) with some great shows (but not too great) and some good tunes (you get my drift). Today we offer you the return of the R2 Book Club with Mark Billingham's latest Tom Thorne novel 'Good As Dead'. You can read some of it here and get in the mood for some crime novel chat with Mark after 6. This is the first of his I've read since David Morrisey started playing Thorne on TV and consequently it is he who I imagine starring in this new story; my guess is that many readers do the same.

And songs today on the subject of ROADWORKS please with councils being warned that they may be fined if they carry them out during peak times. So just weekends and night times which wont irritate anyone (so the theory runs) even if peak time is pretty much all the time these days. ROADWORKS then and the accompanying hassle and time wasting, thanks.

Confessions returns of course, as does Rebecca, and we are giving away tickets to the Hyde Park extravaganza next month.

Hooray for Drivetime! Have a straightforward and hassle free Monday, see you after 5.

DRIVING IN MY CAR - MADNESS

  • Comment number 67.

I've become a bit of a baseball fan in the last couple of months. Started watching one evening on ESPN Ameica, and have now subscribed to MLB TV allowing me to watch my choice of game with either home or away commentary on the iPad.

Used to think baseball was rounders for unathletic adults, but there is an impressive amount of athleticism displayed by 2nd baseman and/or the short-stop when making double plays while hurdling potentially leg-breaking challenges from batsmen sliding into second base. Although there are still plenty of unathletic-looking players earning millions of dollars a year to play it as well.

I'm officially hooked - even found myself singing along to "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" durind the middle of the seventh innings of a Chicago Cubs game last week :-).

The boys set off for a long weekend with their dad in Scotland on Thursday so we're awaiting the arrival of the AS level results either today or tomorrow. Well done to all students achieving a fine set of results - I hope we'll be toasting rather than commiserating on the elder boy's return from his travels. I'm under strict instructions not to open them, as if I would!?!

I'm happy to report back that I completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge on Saturday in exactly 11 hours. I'm not sure I can say I enjoyed the experience but I've done it. Apparently some people go back year after year to complete the same challenge, hoping to improve on their time; my friend and I think they're bonkers. However, after chatting to a couple of girls from our group, we think we may tackle the Chatsworth Challenge at some point, maybe next year.

  • Comment number 72.

Now then, am I going to have to undertake a mammoth catch up and read back the last couple of blogs or is there some kind soul waiting in the wings with a quick resume of occurences over the last 3 weeks?

I had a strange dream last night, which I thought I'd share. You know those dreams when you're trying to do something and keep being frustrated at every turn? Well in this dream I was trying to listen to Simon's first DT show after his hols. I was in a hotel with a group of other people, and the radio was on in the background. After a while it was time for the show to start, but a guy got up, said "I don't want to listen to this any more" and switched the radio off. So I protested, and he turned it back on but so quietly that you couldn't hear it above people talking in the room. Then I went upstairs to get changed to go out, and there was a radio in the room but I couldn't get it tuned to Radio 2.

Finally we were in the car, I put the radio on and thought "But that doesn't sound like Simon". And it wasn't. It was Chris - my radio alarm was waking me up!

#71 Congratulations Toots - it sounds like bloomin' hard work so well done!

  • Comment number 87.

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments. The three peaks challenge is 24.5 miles long and consists of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. The challenge is to complete it in under 12 hours so we did it! Phew! Weather was v mixed - dull and misty first thing, bright and breezy in the middle of the day and wet and miserable (some would say dreich) for the third hill.

Will have to check out the Chatsworth Challenge and report back.

Better get outta here or they'll think I'm willing to do some overtime.

Warmest congrats on getting the ARFOs PSL, Shona and Happy Hornet :)

    I see Alex~G hasn't been around much either. Hope all's well m' Lovely :)

I've seen a couple of comments about Liza, whom I like, but not on the radio at teatime.... sorry Liza and your fans! Personally I think Janice Long would be a really good stand-in for Simon as she always sounds bubbly, has a good knowledge of music, she is good at interviewing people and if you listen to her late at night, as I always do, she always seems to make her guests feel comfortable and it would be good hearing her at a sensible time in the day... maybe next time Simon is off, Liza could do late nights and Janice could do Drivetime!!!

    xx

Well, I've treated myself to an afternoon off, left the shop in the capable hands of Josie, and been for a trumpet round the lanes of Derbyshire on the old motorbike. Blimmin' lovely, it was. The one thing I noticed as I pootled about was the amount of Combine Harvesters toilinf in the fields. Another year begins to wend its weary way towards closure, but before that, a quick oppurtunity to use that favourite phrase. A time of mellow friutfulness. Sums it up nicely.

One of the things I really like about being out and about on the bike on days like these, is when you ride along a stretch of road shaded by trees, and can feel that small drop in temperature as you enter the shady stretch. Only a small thing, but you are so completely impervious to such things when you are in a car. I seem to have descended into wistfulness. Come on, Paul, get back to work...

Katy, I wonder if Kev would find floccinaucinihilipilification floccinaucinihilipilification, or a worthy challange on a Tuesday night?

#87 Great to see you back Toots :) And very well done on completing the 3 peaks challenge! I've never heard of the Chatsworth challenge, we used to go there a lot with the twins, but we haven't been back this summer, will have to try and squeeze a trip in before the end of the holidays.

#90 Great to see you again too Lucie's mum :) I agree with you about Janice Long, I don't get to hear her show much these days, but its always a good listen.

I tuned in a few times to Liza, and here's the thing...she plays some great music, and she can be very funny at times, but I agree with what a few people have said about her manner of speaking. If she could dial it down a bit at times, and drop the weird inflections, she would be quite listenable.

Counting down to the Drivetime dude...5...4...3...2...1...
