Moving slowly...

Simon Mayo|08:52 UK time, Friday, 26 August 2011

Bleary eyes, achey head. Bad night, back to bed. I'm mystified really, I can't understand it. We weren't celebrating, commiserating or even thinking really, which I think makes it just a random attack of the remember-you-can't-do-this-anymore bug. Or maybe it's Nige's fault? That curry last night was something else, totally recommended. Rebecca assures me that the recipes aren't so tricky as you might think and make you feel good too. I feel a purchase coming on.

The Autumn feel continues today I feel as I have just returned from another walk around the estate, going anti-clockwise this time. For the curious, this takes 11 seconds, circumnavigating the shed, a trampoline and the fox poo. The groundsman has clearly not been attending to his job properly-the grass is clearly a few millimetres too long. Words will be had.

So, with apologies to Scottish bloggers, the Bank Holiday weekend dawns. Yesterday was spent hunting for tents and sleeping bags in the loft. By and large, I found Christmas decorations and old clothes. This will not work as camping gear I'm told by the family, who want me to look again. Or maybe they can look themselves maybe.

No movie show yet, that returns next week so it's just the mighty ARF to handle and I'm really looking forward to it. Get that tune in for the 5 o'clock moment and the crown might be yours.

Have a clear-headed and pain-free Friday, see you after 5.

Morning all! Simon, hope the fog clears. Perhaps it is the "eating of words" event that all Spurs fans will be mulling over as they contemplate a certain striker in the Lillywhite?

I have but one request and that is to hear Delirious Love by Neil Diamond with Brian Wilson. Had it as our first dance at our wedding at the end of July and everyone was saying, "Why haven't I heard this before!?". Great tune, give a listen and back me up! Make sure it's the Brian Wilson collaboration though...

As for me, today brings working from home for the second day in a row due to IT issues, JUST amazing way to spend the working days before the bank holiday! Don't know why but, despite a three week honeymoon, I am exhausted after four days back! Hi to the team at Mencap, but you don't half tire me out...

Oh yeah, should probably give a big shout to my gorgeous bride, my amazing Mrs B: Ffion x

I hope your day improves Simon.

Please could we at long last, have something from ELO as an opener for the ARF?

*** Twilight *** by ELO is one that springs to mind for some reason!

I am beginning to wonder if it is actually going to get light this morning. Looks like we are heading into a typical bank holiday weekend.

Ah well, nothing we can do about the weather, moaning about it, only makes it worse.

Its going to be a lot of fun on the roads today, looking forward to the show this evening, while sitting on the M5 car park!!

Good morning everyone. What a gorgeous one it is too here in Cumbria!

The oldest record yet played as an ARFO is Little Richard's Tutti Frutti from 1955. So, aiming for something a little different, and to set an "earliest song yet played" record, may I request, from 1941:

BOOGIE WOOGIE BUGLE BOY by THE ANDREWS SISTERS

  • Comment number 6.

    Good Morning All :)

Awww poor Simon, I feel much the same though, it has to be said! Maybe it's the weather (grey, cold, drizzly and damp) making me want to retreat to my nice warm bed, or maybe it was the disturbed sleep... Whichever way, I am cream crackered!

Our 'estate' is in much the same condition, we also have a trampoline and outhouse, no fox deposits though, instead we have cat and hedgehog doings!

I feel I should request a perky and uplifting ARFO song to give us all a much needed boost...

I FEEL GOOD - JAMES BROWN

  • Comment number 7.

    Gorgeous Harry? Really?

About time too. Loving your song choice.

Morning Simon and all fellow bloggers.

Well up in my part of West Yorkire this morning it is dull and wet , most likley due to the fact that it is Leeds Festivial this weekend .

As i have raised the subject of Leeds Festival , this Sunday see the return to a Yorkshire stage of that “National Tresure” , 6Music DJ and as were learnt on the drivetime show this week friend of Charlie from Noah and the Whale, Jarvis Cocker.

Therefore as for the last three month my request for ARFO is :-

    COMMON PEOPLE – PULP

Hope every one has a great holiday weekend , even though i am working Monday :-(

  • Comment number 9.

    Hi Zoe and Duncan too.

Please , no more talk of 'doings!' LOL!!

    Hi Andy too.

  • Comment number 11.

    #7 MTF, yes, it gorgeous!

Forecast is for rain at about 1 o'clock but right now it is that very rare thing: sunny in Cumbria!

  • Comment number 12.

Good morning Simon, Drive Time Team, NYM & MTF & anyone else who pops by whilst I am constructing this little missive.

A very dreary day outside here in NW Essex. I think if it wasn't for the swallows, I'd think it was Autumn. Feel a bit robbed of a summer. Hollibobs in November, should be some sunshine then!

Right, firstly, Happy Birthday Mr Nicrolastic!

Secondly, my ARF choice might go down well with Matt. Not one I'd normally pick, but it fits the criteria, and is quite a good tune to tap/thump the steering wheel to!

    BAD, BAD BOY by NAZARETH

Be thinking of you on the M5 car park, MTF :-(

    It's Friday!

    Madchick x

  • Comment number 13.

Sorry to hear you are feeling slightly ropey Simon....must be the Curry!!!

If any of you have caught The Bachelor on Channel 5 ( gawd I watch some rubbish!) mind you it is about Gavin Henson ( phwoar!) ...then I have some very juicy gossip that I was facebooked last night!! ;)

    Anyway ARF crown hunting beckons:

In the light of Simon's tip a few weeks back. One tune that really does hit the wall of sound is.......

PRINCE CHARMING - Adam and the Ants ( that scream at the beginnning is deafening)

    Others are:

    1. CALL ME - bLONDIE

    2. TWO TRIBES - Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Must go, have a nice day.

Oh and if anyone of you especially the fairer sex of you can tell me where I can look for some dark brown shoes for work about 1 to 2 inch heels as my current ones are falling off my feet covered in holes I would be very very grateful as I walked the length and breadth of Merry Hill in Dudley last night to no avail :(

    Lateroonies!

    Mand ;)

  • Comment number 14.

Thats great to hear Harry. We have had monsoon conditions here for the last couple of days.

Very localised though, can be dry here and flooding, the other side of the village.

Hope your rain holds off as long as possible.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 15.

Or if you really want to make my day, Simon.......

    Please would you consider.......

Everybody Wants To Rule The World by the wonderful Tears For Fears

  • Comment number 16.

I'm quite liking the rain, our garden is too but I do feel for the festival goers. Hold on tight, at least your not on the US east coast..... If it's RAWK! music required to belt straight into ARF then I would go for the below, not least because it is prematurely topical:

November Rain - Guns and Roses

....no talking over the end bit either!

  • Comment number 17.

Hi MCW, thanks and yes, am also pleased that the swallows are still here.

Typically, the weather will pick up, on the first week back to school. It always does.

Talking of shoes (have you tried M&S Mandy? ) I was on the lookout for some walking style trainers for a weekend of, hopefully lots of walking. I came across a pair of 'shock absorber' trainers. Quite odd looking, in fact a bit 'spice girlish' if that makes any sense, as had a bit of a platform to them. Anyway, tried them on and boinged, boinged around the shop in them.

All of a sudden, a strange sensation came over me and I had to sit down and take them off. I actually felt seasick. Thank goodness, for trying before buying. Settled for something far more down to earth.

    Funny old world!

  • Comment number 18.

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Sorry you're feeling a bit under the weather, Simon. Maybe it's post-holidayitis - I seem to suffer from it whenever I've been away. Thanks for clearing up my curiosity about your estate! Size isn't everything, so they say... ;o)

For the ARFO today, I'd like to suggest:

NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS by Tina Turner

NO MORE HEROES by the Stranglers

SOMETHING ABOUT YOU by Level 42

S'pose I'd better go and justify the (not at all) large salary they pay me in this establishment...

    Back on the ARF trail

' Fields of Fire' Big Country

A fine tune to start the bank holiday weekend at a heck of a pace, ignore the weather and in the words of McFadden and Whitehead 'Ain't No Stopping Us Now'

    Have a good un everybody

  • Comment number 21.

    Good Morning All -

    Simon & Team –

As usual, I'd like to request as ARFO

THE BEAT - by The Look

    Please & Thankyou

  • Comment number 22.

#19 MTF, please carry on chatting ........... seems to be a little quiet here even for a Friday. Are people setting off for the Bank Holiday early?

I've never found the M5 too bad for driving and, with my kids and grandkids all living in Devon, I've driven it a lot.

The road I hate on Bank Holiday weekends is the A303, especially the nightmare between Amesbury and Winterbourne Stoke.

  • Comment number 23.

Morning all. Starting to brighten up here in Bournemouth after heavy rain last night. Just got back from the second dentist visit of the week - it's no wonder he has a Porche outside his practice.

    ARF selections

Backfield In Motion - Sam & Dave (Part of the Soul thingy with Craig Charles)

Heros & Villans - Beach Boys

    Radar Love - Golden Earing

    Horace Wimp - ELO

    All Right Now - Free

    All Crazy Now - Slade

    Copperhead Road - Steve Earle

    Have a good day everybody

  • Comment number 24.

Harry Snapper - T O T A L L Y with you on that. You'd be hurtling along thinking "ooh, I might be there in time for dinner" and then you'd get to that Solstice Park and then BANG, your evening evaporates.... Thank heaven for ARF BUT the radio signal around there is appalling so it's double pain

  • Comment number 25.

#13 Mandy - as I have a touch of the "Imelda's" I was looking for brown myself - there's not a lot of dark brown around. I got a suede pair from a famous high-street Directory, but the heel was 3-4 inches. M&S are worth a look though - online they've got quite a few styles in brown and you can always get the delivered to a local store for free delivery and then try them on and immediately 'return' any unsuitable ones.

V wet and miserable here. I'm still in my pjs doing some work... and posting this ;) but I really must make the effort to go to the gym ...

ARFO - Jumpn' Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones

  • Comment number 26.

#24 Duncan, it is a dreadful road but, as with all things, I've seen it in a better light.

I used to live in Warminster and I worked, briefly, on the Amesbury side of Salisbury. One morning, coming off a night shift, the sun just rising, filling the plain with a preternatural orange glow, Stonehenge seemed to be floating on a sea of mist. I had to pull over and just look. At that moment I could see why the ancient Britons thought it was a magical place. Stunning!

  • Comment number 27.

    Morning everyone

A nice bright dry start to the day up north. Hope you feel livelier soon Simon!

As British Superbikes are racing at Cadwell Park this weekend, how about this...

BORN TO BE WILD ~ Steppenwolf

  • Comment number 28.

#26 - It is beautiful. It never fails to amaze me and it must've been even more beautiful in bygone days without a large strip of tarmac and nose to tail smoking heaps of metal containing seething passengers right next to it!

  • Comment number 29.

    Morning fellow bloggers......................old and new!!

Friday.......where did that week go? Maybe it flew by because all is back to how it should be with the DT Dude back in the hotseat with his wonderful team and the NYM is picking plenty of great blog requests this week. Keep it up NYM ;0)

My bid for the AFRO crown is:

GREAT BALLS OF FIRE - JERRY LEE LEWIS

Mr Dougal is still persisting with his request for:

GET IT ON - T REX

Have a wonderful day everyone...........even if you are feeling below par.

    Thank you.

  • Comment number 31.

As it looks like it's going to be a slow day as far as ARFO chasing is concerned, and it's a Bank Holiday weekend so no DT Show on Monday, how about a game to keep us occupied?

Not sure if anyone else wakes up to Vanessa Feltz and heard this but earlier in the week she was getting people to participate in game she called "Living the Song". Listeners were encouraged email and text in things they'd done which were mentioned in songs. One of my favourites was a woman who had her photograph taken "standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona".

To get the ball rolling I really have, just like Billie Joe MacAllister, "jumped off the Tallahatchie bridge" :-)

  • Comment number 32.

Now why doesn't 'Day trip to Bangor' sound all that exciting?

    Tell us more Harry.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 33.

Ha, MTF, with you on that. All I can think of is "Walking in the rain, just to get wet on purpose" - Getting Away With It, Electronic.

Maaaaaan, I am 'on topic' this morning!

  • Comment number 34.

Harry and Duncan - I know the A303 well as it's on the way to Mum's. However, we usually turn off at the Wallops and go through Salisbury, thus avoiding that dreadful bit round Stonehenge.

#31 Good game - I'll have to have a thunk.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 35.

#34 'turn off at the Wallops'...sounds like a euphemism.

    ;o)

  • Comment number 36.

#32 1976: I was in the navy and we were in a US base just outside New Orleans for a 6 weeks re-fit. A group of us hired a car for a week and just took off. We drove up into Mississippi and were crossing the Tallahatchie river when I yelled, "Stop the car"! I'm not sure it was the Tallahatchie bridge but it was certainly a Tallatchie bridge and I jumped off it! Must add, it was onto the bank, not into the river, as I didn't want emulate Billie Joe that much!

    :-D

Hiya Katymaty. There's just something about Fridays :) Hows the decorating going btw?

#37 Given the unhurried nature of a Bank Holiday blog, Katy, I think we should be told a little more :-)

  • Comment number 40.

Enjoying 'The Highwayman' on Ken's show.

Once more reminded of how fine a song writer Jimmy Webb is ...

[Deebeedeebs - Level 42 Something About You is now playing - beautiful track but maybe too laid back for an ARFO?]

Harry, Duncan and Deebs - A303 - love/hate that road [7.5 miles north of me]

  • Comment number 41.

#40 - I think at sign in a field sums it up: "A303 - You are the Weakest Link".

Reminds me of that sign on the A14 going north towards P'boro: "You are now leaving THE FUTURE!"

  • Comment number 42.

'Oh, sorry, I didn't recognise you. Is there something I can do for you?'

'Yes, I have this year to deliver, but I don't have an accurate address.'

'This all seems a bit familiar. I have a feeling of Déjà vu!'

'It's not Déjà vu, we did almost exactly this same thing a year ago'

'Did we? What did I say next?'

'You asked me what did you want a year for.'

    'What did you say?'

'Oh, it's not for you, I was hoping someone here would be kind enough to pass it on to Nic, to add to his growing collection of years'

' Oh yes, I'm starting to remember'

    'Well?'

    'Well, what?'

    'Is Nic here?'

No,mate, he does pop in occasionally, though. You are more likely to find him in ChezNicia, or maybe next door.'

' Look, this thing was heavy enough last year, but now I'm a bit older, these extra 365 days are doing me in. Can't I just leave it with you, again?'

'Well, I suppose. Just leave it on the doorstep, and either someone here will pass it on to him, or the neighbours might spot it and hand it on. Although I'm not sure he will really want ANOTHER year.'

    'So I hear!

Have a great afternoon everyone and hope the weather and traffic are good to you. It was nice of Simon to recognise that it's not the whole country's long weekend. But if you are having a Bank Holiday weekend, I hope it's a good one!

ARFO "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix or the U2 version, would go down very nicely. Thank you.

#73 I bought Dave and Ansell Collins' Double Barrel (and Monkey Spanner) in what was a very brief dalliance with reggae. I've just listened to them again and I'm not sure they hold up well.

Yes, there was some rubbish released in 1971, as there is every year, but it also produced some cracking songs: Maggie May, for instance!

  • Comment number 79.

true Harry but the three I cited in #73 actually made #1! and there are some really good tunes from the year if you listen again to last nights sounds of the century BBC radio 2....which I am doing so as I type :-)

As most of my ★song action★ seems to have taken place in London

    - following my Electric Avenue revelation, perhaps I could add that I have also:

Walked the Streets Of London but sadly not led by the hand of [Ralph McTell]

    Seen a Waterloo Sunset [Kinks]

Wandered along Baker Street [Gerry Rafferty]

    Worked in Camden Town [Suggs]

    and Carnaby Street [Jam]

Woken up on a Chelsea Morning [Joni Mitchell]

which I DID want to go to [Elvis Costello]

Lived in Finchley Central [New Vaudeville Band]

    Picnic-ed in Itchycoo Park [SmallFaces]

    Done the Lambeth Walk [Trad.]

and Knocked 'em in The Old Kent Road [Albert Chevalier]

I have played Mornington Crescent [Belle and Sebastian]

and sung Nice One Cyril watching Spurs at White Hart Lane [Cockerel Chorus]

Seen the Sweet Thames Flow Softly [Planxty]

Gone Underground and Down In The Tube Station At Midnight [Jam]

    and best of all ..

I really DO remember some lovin' on the floor in Belsize Park [Kayleigh - Marillion]

    Good Afternoon All :)

Loving all the song stories, especially from Harry, sounds like you really did have a girl in every port! ;)

I'm not sure I can think of any song lyrics that I've acted out, so to speak. I mean I've been 'Down To Margate' but I didn't do that because Chas and Dave recommended it!

One vivid memory I do have is of singing Suburbia by The Pet Shop Boys, with a bunch of my friends, as we ran through the streets in the dark, on our way back home from the school youth club. We didn't break any windows or engage in any other acts of vandalism though (as per the lyrics!)

I just looked at the Number 1 singles from 1971, they began with Clive Dunn and Granddad (which I bought for my granddad! :D) and ended with Ernie by Benny Hill (which I didn't buy because my nan thought he was bawdy!) There was some decent stuff in between though.

#64 hee, hee - the young lady in question obviously found something in your car to capture her attention ;0

#80 Katy - what a lovely ramble through your life .... knocking 'em in the Old Kent Road conjures up quite an image :)

  • Comment number 86.

#82 Shona I only started to listen from 1967, they have all been really good so far

  • Comment number 87.

    *BRILLIANT* Katy #80

I hope Simon doesn't insist that we all choose out tunes like that!! :o))

  • Comment number 88.

#79 A lot of people had bad taste in the 1970's (look at the clothes we wore LOL) that's why so much rubbish got to No 1. I was 14/15 in 1971 and most of the people I knew didn't buy many singles. I don't know if this is true but I think by then the only people buying the stuff that got to No 1 were either really young or quite (very?) old. It's their fault! :-)

#83 Zoe, a girl I every port? Oh believe me! I tried!! But, with very little success :-)

  • Comment number 89.

ive been to waterloo station i went on a friday hoping 2 see terry and julie

  • Comment number 90.

#88 the fashions were 'interesting' lots of Crimpoline and loud prints...Hey I was very young and didn't buy Ernie or Grandad!

  • Comment number 91.

#88 I got my first record player (that looked like a suitcase) in 1971. It was second hand. A very nice lady and a friend of my mum gave me a single to go with it. Twist and Shout by the Beatles. I still have it today in its original sleeve.

The very nice lady invited us to come to her house to listen to her very new record player (suspecting now I got her old one!) to listen to music that ............wait for it.....................was in stereo. Tijuanna Sound Of Brass belting out big style. First trumpeter squealing from the left speaker and the rest of the band blaring from the right.

    What a marvel back then!

  • Comment number 92.

#90 A susurrant confession ............. I quite like "Ernie" LOL

  • Comment number 93.

    @KatyMac .......... look at my #92 ................. I got susurrant into a conversation LOL

  • Comment number 94.

#92 are you sure it wasn't just your ghostly gold caps a-ratttling in their crate???

  • Comment number 95.

    #94 ...................................

Now Ernie rushed out into the street his goldtop in his hand

He said if you wan to marry Susie you'll fight for her like a man

Oh why don't we play cards for her

    He sneeringly replied

And just to make it interesting we'll have a shilling on the side

Now Ernie pulled him from his van a beneath the blazing sun

They stood there face to face

And Ted went for his bun

But Ernie was to quick, things didn't go the way Ted planned

And a strawberry flavoured yoghurt sent it spinning from his hand

Now Sue she rushed between them and tried to keep them apart

But Ernie pushed her aside and a rock cake caught him underneath his heart

He looked up in pained surprise as the concrete hardened crust

Of a stale pork pie caught him in the eye

    And Ernie bit the dust

    ..................... pure poetry LOL

  • Comment number 96.

#95 Ernieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee........And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west!

(Sorry, couldn't leave a song unfinished)

  • Comment number 97.

    Poor Ernie, (Ernieeeeeeeeeee)

And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.

Ernie was only 52, he didn't wanna die,

And now he's gone to make deliveries in that milk round in the sky.

Where the customers are angels and ferocious dogs are banned,

And the milkman's life is full of fun in that fairy, dairy land.

But a woman's needs are many fold and soon she married Ted,

But strange things happened on their wedding night as they lay in their bed.

Was that the trees a-rustling? Or the hinges of the gate?

Or Ernie's ghostly gold tops a-rattling in their crate?

    They won't forget Ernie, (Ernieeeeeeeeee)

And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.

    ....pure something!

  • Comment number 98.

#97 .......... pure something? Does it rhyme with grit?
