Say What?

Simon Mayo|08:07 UK time, Friday, 22 July 2011

I do believe that's a hint of sun creeping around the curtain. Well done everybody, we shamed it into its appearance after the rain tunes yesterday. There were so many good tunes suggested we could have filled a week's worth of shows with them. Maybe if we get a heatwave sometime in August we can come back and do the weather again. But for now, pass the shades - it's all too much.

Enjoyed the show yesterday, Matt's 'Manchester' accent a highlight. It was certainly closer than mine would have been. As I might have mentioned before, I can do cockney, Cornish (in a roughly South West kind of way), posh and camp. A rough Irish (south), Lancashire, American (roughly Texas/California hybrid) and grizzled European come next and that's about it really. This is the repertoire developed over the many years of reading the bedtime stories and I'm not going to learn anything new now.

Busy old Friday today as the 5 Live show is back after last week's non-appearance. So at last we get to talk Harry Potter 7b, a full week after everyone else. I'm not sure it has effected the box office take by a single penny but I'll feel better once it's all out in the open. Also the Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Aniston chat I mentioned on Wednesday, alongside the usual nonsense.

Then to the All Request Friday juggernaut and your participation is encouraged, welcomed and rather fun. Big bold and brash is what the custom is here. Feel free to suggest sensitive, quiet and meditative but it won't get on.

Have a stable and clear-sighted Friday, see you after 2 and/or 5

Just looking back to the show from this day last year Simon. You were just about to go on holiday, but not before a trip to the dentist.

Isn't it always the case that before pleasure comes pain?

Anyway, lets get in nice and early with my ARF.

Sensitive, quiet and meditative it is not........

Lets open the show for the first time with some ELO.

    *** Twilight *** please.

After all, twas good enough for R6, so I am reliably informed. My radio stays permanently tuned to R2 :)

Morning everyone... it's nice and sunny here again today, the birds have been twittering away happily since the sun woke them up and the doves are cooing in the tree at my back door... got to think of an ARF tune, so will have a ponder and pop back in a bit!

Good Morning Simon, Team, NYM and fellow blogtastic bloggers,

It is glorious sunshine here, too, but have just been told by the ELH delivery man that it wont last all day! :-(

Anyhow, I enjoyed yesterdays show, too. Such fun!

Now please would you kindly consider my ARF offering, it really is a belter, honest!

Light My Fire by The Doors

Can I put in a cheeky request for our recently acquired four legged friend, who is really turning out to be a fabulous little pony?

    Crazy Horses by The Osmonds

I am now going to enjoy my three day weekend, and I hope everyone else has a good weekend whatever the weather throws at us!

Hiya MTF, I hope that you had a wonderful 'oleeday en France. My sunflowers look like dwarves compared to that in your fb snap!

    x

  • Comment number 10.

Thanks MCW, beautiful area 37c everyday, ok a degree behind Gazzas 38c. LOL!

The sunflowers were indeed magnificent, mile upon mile of huge yellow heads, still couldn't bring myself to pick one though.

Oop, rain has stopped. There's a good sign.

  • Comment number 11.

Had a bit of an ARF think and can't decide between these two!

BORN TO BE WILD ~ Steppenwolf

ROCKING IN THE FREE WORLD ~ Neil Young

Off to walk my dogs along the beach while it's still sunny!

    x

  • Comment number 12.

    Have a nice walk LM.

Hopefully, what you have got, is heading this way and what we have got is exiting in a SW direction, sorry Devon and Cornwall.

  • Comment number 13.

Good Morning Simon, Team, NYM and Blogpoppets

Sunny here, as MCW has already reported - the roof was down this morning on my trip to work.

Well, I was going to suggest Art Garfunkel's 'I only have eyes for you'... but it seems my chances of that getting played as the ARFO are slightly less than winning the next Euromillions lottery. So instead, can I respectfully request:

DEVIL GATE DRIVE by Suzi Quatro

It would also be lovely to hear

SOMETHING ABOUT YOU by Level 42. Which I happen to think ticks all the ARFO boxes. So there.

    Deebee ~X~

  • Comment number 14.

Good Morning All - We have a bit of sunshine here too.

Please Simon & Team - my ARFO is - as usual -

    THE BEAT by The Look

Big, Bold and Brash - rhythmical too - it won't disappoint!

    Love

    BP

  • Comment number 15.

    Morning all

Sunnyish here at the moment, but I heard the weather man say this morning that the East coast would be cooler and wetter than the rest of the UK this weekend - oh great! : (

Can't think of much for an ARFO yet.

    Will be back later ...

    Tortie x

  • Comment number 16.

#13 Think I tried that Suzi Q song last week Deebee. So I think it's only fair to "share" if you are successful ;-)

  • Comment number 17.

    Hi Billie.

When will 'normal' service be resumed?

Bet Ynys Mon is getting busy.

I heard Sally Traffic talking about how hectic its going to be today on the roads. I will be one of those 'poor souls' stuck in it, but not with a holiday at the end of it.

Country roads, take me home, would be appropriate, but far too sensitive, in Simons words.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 18.

Friday good wishes to one and all. We finally got here and what a lovely feeling it is.

My ARF suggestion this week is:

BITS AND PIECES - DAVE CLARK FIVE

But Mr Dougal would like to hear:

    GET IT ON - T-REX

Let the battle of the Dougals commence!!

    Ta Ta for now

    Dougal (Mrs) x

  • Comment number 19.

Hi All. Was going to suggest Adele Someone like you, But you wanted bold and brash, so:

Radio Stars- Nervous Wreck (I know, I know )

    Sweet- Hell Raiser

    Dexys- Celtic soul Brothers

    BRats- She's so Modern/Looking after no 1

    Ramones- Rockaway beach/Blitzkrieg Bop

    Motorhead- Bomber

    Pulp- Common People

    Who- My Generation

    Adam Ant- Prince Charming

Covers every angle I think. play one, or more, or ALL .

    D x

  • Comment number 20.

    Buongiorno a tutti,

Hope everyone is fine and dandy and sparkling on this clear and sunny morn. Yes, really, 2 days in a row. And, with more sun on the horizon for the next few days here, and for those of you still a bit soggy, in the fine words of D:Ream, things can only get better.

(No idea why I started speaking Italian there, just seemed like a good thing to do on a Friday. Wednesdays would be much more German. Mittwoch, and all that)

    For today's wheel-thumping start-with-a-bang-end-with-a-bang ne'er-been-played-before ARFO, I'd like to suggest:

SINCE YOU BEEN GONE - RAINBOW. I can think of no finer way to conclude, nay celebrate, the Midsummer Moshfest.

And if that doesn't do it..then my back-up options, as always, are:

    SHE'S NOT THERE - Santana

JOHNNY BE GOOD - Chuck Berry

    Good day all.

  • Comment number 21.

Can't get much bigger and bolder than a bit of Led Zeppelin - our campers one year awoke to a surprise live performace in the middle of the campsite at 10am!! Starting with these two songs - fantastically surreal to see people rocking out in pyjamas with coffee!!

    LED ZEPPELIN - COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN

    LED ZEPPELIN - IMMIGRANT SONG

Take your pick and get that head going!!!

  • Comment number 22.

    Hello again

My suggestions for tonight's ARFO are:

BAD CASE OF LOVING YOU - Robert Palmer

SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE - Robert Palmer (again!)

    Please NYM!

    Tortie x

  • Comment number 23.

A bit of sun here so am heading off to Cambridge to do some shopping while the going's good - it's due to rain later :(

ARFO - well I'm sticking with a choice from yesterday which comes with a bit of a story for the NYM and Simon to consider ...

(Hey You) Get Off My Cloud - The Rolling Stones

This song reminds me of the-love-of-my-life and university days. Coming up 20 years ago I toddled off to a concrete institution on the outskirts of London and on my first night there met a gorgeous boy (awwww). This track somehow became "our song." Anyway, long story short, I haven't seen him in 15 years - gone but not forgetten. So if this gets on Simon, and without turning the show into Sunday Love Songs, please can you play it for Andrew.

  • Comment number 24.

Awww AG lets hope he plays your tune and Andrew hears it too :-)

  • Comment number 25.

    Thats lovely Autumn Gale.

Wouldn't it be nice to think that someone was playing a tune, just for you.

Thats it now, got my soppy head on.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 26.

#16 Did you Mo? Great minds and all that - of course we can share! I'll mention you in my acceptance speech. ;o)

#23 Aww - you should have said, Autumn_Gale. I work in Cambridge - we could have had a mini blog meet. Lovely story about Andrew.

Can I put in a sneaky extra ARFO request? How about

WHILE YOU SEE A CHANCE by Steve Winwood

    Worth a try...

    ~X~

  • Comment number 27.

Good morning everyone. Long time, no see!

Well, it's sunny at the moment here in Cumbria but we're not expecting it to last long; some very heavy showers are forecast.

Have to say I thought last weeks ARFO was a little wide-of-the-mark - Beatles' Revolution (once the opening riff is out the way) always strikes me as a bit of a dirge and hardly met the criteria set out in Lord Ammo's blog. Certainly no steering-wheel drumming going on in my car.

Anyway, although I'm sure my open criticism of ARFO selections will hardly endear me to the one who does the choosing, may I request:

I WANT YOUR LOVE by TRANSVISION VAMP

which certainly does fit last week's description of the ideal opener :-)

Work continues and I won't be contributing fulltime for a wee while yet but I will drop by when I can and I'll try to pop back later. But, if I don't ................. have a great weekend everyone!

  • Comment number 28.

Decided to wait and take the risk of hanging out the washing!

#25 soppy head on - me too :)

#26 Deebee - as I live in an unpreposessing town about 25 miles west along the A14 I come over quite a lot (and I'm over for school now and then too) - so next time ....

OK - really going now! (Please don't rain til I get back....)

  • Comment number 29.

Morning all and a bright if not altogether sunny one it is too in Pudsey!

I'll suggest Vertigo by U2 or 68 Guns by The Alarm in the hope that one day it will get played.

Last post for 2 weeks anyway as off on holiday and the laptop stays well and truly in its case on these occassions.

    GB

  • Comment number 30.

Have a great holiday Simon. Would love to hear Vertigo. One of my favourite U2 songs.

A_G hope your risky strategy doesn't backfire ;-). Black clouds here. Although I am some 400 miles north of you so you're probably safe enough.

Harry! Good to see you buddy.

Deebee, you know I will be whooping away if you get ARFO, only teasing.

Only 6 sleeps (1 ARF and 3 DTs) until I go away!

  • Comment number 31.

Still no sun here this morning in Brittany, but lots of rain still.

Suggestion to start the show would be :-

    RICHIE VALENS - LA BAMBA

  • Comment number 32.

My husband and I would really like to hear 'River Deep Mountain High' by Ike and Tina Turner. Many thanks Simon

  • Comment number 33.

Good Morning Simon, Driveteam, Constructors and Fellow Blogpopsters.

A little on the tardy side today - but still in time, I hope, to choose an ARFO.

Will stand by my latest head nodder:

RUNNIN' DOWN A DREAM - TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS

Good ARFternoon Each! Still a bit grey here in Sheffield, but warm. Muggy, actually.

    Arf request...

I have made a careful and thoughtful study of all neccessary criteria, and concluded thus:

    'BABY JUMP' by MUNGO JERRY

    I hope I'm correct.

  • Comment number 37.

Hmmmmm, only 34 requests so far and one blogger had nine of those, is it going to go to a muggle?

    hello

  • Comment number 40.

#23 Autumn Gale and the follow-up comments -

    - aaaah yes - that special song, the tune that someone, somewhere, from days gone by, might request for you ...

If ever I hear Peter Gabriel's 'Secret World' I inevitably assume that it's being played just for me ...

    *nostalgic sigh*

  • Comment number 41.

It occurs to me that I may have misunderstood the criteria, and what is actually required is 'ROCKIN MY LIFE AWAY' by JERRY LEE LEWIS.

  • Comment number 42.

I loved the jumping bunny talk y'day.

I dont think there's much chance of either of my two reaching any great heights.

Skippy, the little wild bunny is heading towards 8 years old and arthritic, although can give off a sinister growl when in one of her better moods!

Dylan, well anything above raising his head from the ground is just like too much hard work.

Must google the site that they mentioned though, sounds intriguing.

    Afternoon,

My daughter does not finish school until Wednesday, the delay is due to the extra Bank Holidays, so we shall not be bothered by the surge in traffic which Sal warns us about. Smug moi? I did make my home-schooled son's day, I told him 4 pages of Maths and 2 of English and he can put his books away for the summer.

ARF Show me your teeth Lady Ga Ga

    Must be the dental chat.

But also my dentist is jaw droppingly gorgeous, in his mid to late 40's ooooh time for a sore tooth I think.

  • Comment number 44.

hello Simon, Team & fellow bloggers.,

Am new to this, but not new to listening to the show.... But just thought I would join in....

    As the weather is Bristol is dismal, I think a very summery tune to make you all smile;

THE MORE I SEE YOU - Chris Montez

However Deebee has suggested a song and an artist I completely adore....

WHILE YOU SEE A CHANCE by Steve Winwood

    Hurrah for Friday!

    Squiffless x

  • Comment number 45.

MTF. Nice to hear of my Godson rabbit (Godrabbitson? Grabbit??) Dylan. It must be nigh on a year since he had his flystrike 'episode'. Glad he seems to be OK.

  • Comment number 46.

#37 MTF - interesting that two separate requests are for Transvision Vamp tracks - interesting enough for me to wander orf in direction of UToob ..

I was post-sprog the mid 80s which meant that I lost my music 'ear' for a while - apart from singing nursery rhymes and The Wheels On The Bus ...

However, I do remember the way Wendy James sang " I want your Aaaaah ...." which attracted quite a lot of male interest.

    :^D

  • Comment number 47.

Oh dear, some poor soul must be stuck in the lift here. We are getting increasingly tetchy tannoy announcements looking for the lift engineer and telling us not to use them. Causing much hilarity amongst those of us safely sat at our desks ;-)

  • Comment number 48.

LOL Paul, I must go back and have a look. He's a lazy so and so. Lots of close monitoring is called for, but yes seems ok.

    Good Afternoon All :)

It's been a mix of sunshine and cloud here, neither one thing or the other really!

Feeling tired after a rather restless night, and off out for a doctor's appointment soon, but afore I go, my ARFO suggestion is...

I GET AROUND - BEACH BOYS

Hope everyone is having a decent Friday, and best wishes for a good weekend to all, if I don't make it back on here later.

#27 Harry - get those heavy showers out of the way now - I'm off home on the bike then it's load up the Landy to Windermere for the Air Show.

My 1st fiance memory tune reminder?

    DAVE EDMUNDS - GIRLS TALK

However for a 'wow factor' ARFO I would recommend

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT - MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND

    Happy weekend one and all!

Additional request for the very powerful ....

THE ONE I LOVE - REM

Didn't hear the ARFO tonight - was on the beach.... (shhhh). Sounds like it was "Schools out"? I thought about that earlier in the week, but as my own little (and large) monsters have been off now for THREE WHOLE WEEKS, it seemed a little tardy.

*Steps up onto soapbox* That George Alagiah ad for the "digital switchover" is THE MOST PATRONISING MESSAGE I HAVE HEARD FOR A VERY LONG TIME. C'mon R2, do you think we're all morons?

Sorry for my absinthe - I had a 3 o'clock meeting this afternoon (whatever happened to winding down for the weekend?) and I seem to have been cooking ever since I got home. I hope the Brainy family are big eaters - we've ended up with twice the amount of food required for the number of people coming this weekend.

I missed the ARFO, but I gather it was something predictable. Ho hum... This is the first time we haven't been affected by the schools breaking up - except for the fact the traffic is a bit quieter in the mornings. Feels a bit weird.

#67 Lady_stormrider, me bellow boaty, me old hearty! We won't actually be mooring up to Sealand - I'm not sure that's allowed. We'll just be circumnavigating the tower, waving at the natives as we go round and hoping they're in a friendly mood and not inclined to shoot at random yachties! Love the name of your boat - do you know 'Floozie' has a special significance for our very own Lord Ammo...?

#66 #85 Della Thrust/Dirk Thrust... just an educated guess ;o)

We're off at oh-gawd-double-oh in the morning - that's the trouble with sailing, it always seems to start so blimmin early. So I probably won't 'see' any of you blogpoppets until Sunday night. Wishing one and all a lovely weekend, whatever you're doing.

Hi All - 2 posts from me - the first more sombre -

NORWAY - Are they saying it's the first major violence since WW2 ?

In the 1980s, I was a member of the Greater Manchester Radio Chorale and we had an exchange student, Peter, from Oslo who joined us for a year. He arranged for us to visit Norway the following year and to stay with Norwegian families. We had a fabulous time. They were so hospitable. The wine flowed freely - even though they had some - ridiculous to us rules - about selling Alcohol - it wasn't on show - when you went in to the shop it looked empty - you almost had to whisper - and it was expensive. Nevertheless - at all the meals - in all the homes - we were sated. That was the first time I had ever eaten Couscous - on some family's back yard porch in the shade of an awning.

I did a spoof arrangement of The Beatles' "Nowhere Man" - Norway Man - for us to sing. We sang in Tivoli Gardens - Tues. 26th. Aug. 1986. I still have the Tivoli Garden Advertising Poster with the "funambulist".

Such lovely memories of Peter and of Oslo makes tonight's news even more shocking.

    2nd. post - much more blogfriendly -

Wasn't telly good tonight? MIRANDA - something else! Then Rob Brydon - if anyone hasn't tried him - yet give him a go. Saw him live at Galeri Caernarfon last year. We were up in the Gallery - no pun - looking down on his bald patch and - despite his much publicised hair transplant - he is no taller!

Billie, I have been to Stavanger many times with work. Yes, expensive but beautiful and exceptionally friendly.

Another dull day here. Budapest prep, Dad, beautician and late lunch with pal on the cards for me today. Who needs the sun ;-). Will be taking more than a passing interest in the GP since I'll be there live next weekend.
