MUST TRY HARDER
Well here we are again. Trying to access yesterday's comments brings up the familiar 'sorry, there has been a problem' etc. So I have no idea whats been happening and trust yesterday was a lovely time for everybody. I was lost in a sweaty throng of ceramic art connoisseurs who knew what they liked and understood the finer points of glazes, moulds and kiln temperatures. I excelled in smiling, nodding and handing out those little circular red 'sold' stickers. Pizza and fizzy wine followed and barely a thought was paid to the news or what was happening in the outside world. Did I miss anything?
Today we see the last mid-summer middle-aged mosh. Now some bloggers might breathe a sigh of relief, others will be disappointed but its brief run concludes today before Dr Mosh goes on holiday to some sweaty rock tour with some Scandinavian Norse headbangers. Before he goes, he has one last killer selection of guitar led pain relief from 6.
And for tunes today, I'm thinking of the SCHOOL REPORT. Many are being received, many on the way. We all remember the arrival of the (usually brown) envelope with caustic comments and pithy summaries of how we have performed in the required subjects over the term. Most modern reports have to have an encouraging tone and need to be interpreted with help. My teachers never had that problem. Feel free to share your SCHOOL REPORT comments that have lodged in your mind for one reason or other.
Meantime, have relaxed and error-free Wednesday, see you after 5

Talking of school reports, I will have absent next to my name in the register for the last two days :(
Monday we were Internet-less for most of the day due to a major problem with our provider. I felt lost without it :( How did that happen? How did I become so dependent on something I've managed the majority of my life without? Anyway, I read some books and caught up on the housework. We were supposed to be visiting the mister's ailing cousin, but that had to be postponed until next Monday.
I fully intended to join in the blog chat yesterday, but between getting back into writing my book (I've been lacking inspiration and motivation lately :() and an unexpected afternoon visit from our family support worker, I just didn't get the time. I didn't even get to hear the show last night, and I probably won't bother doing the listen again, as it wasn't Simon :-[
I am lacking inspiration for the oldies today :/ Can only dredge up one so far...

At 11 years old, I can still remember the class teacher's summary remark on my report: "Works well, but can be moody at times." Only the week before this same teacher had rushed down the aisle between desks, picked me up by both shoulders, carried me out of classroom and thrown me into a cupboard in the corridor. To this day I have no idea what I did to deserve such treatment! Anyway, a week later he's trying to write my report and calls me over and says "David, what am I supposed to write on your report." "I don't know Sir, that's your job!" Today, had he done that (throwing me in the cupboard) he would probably be taken outside and shot!!!

Talking of brains - from yesterday's blog, the navigation lesson with the brainy couple went very well last night. Thanks to those that asked. Really, a lot of coastal navigation is down to 'O' level Maths so it wasn't surprising that they picked it up very quickly. And they brought along a rather fine bottle of wine that they'd picked up on their holiday in South Africa. And even better, they've promised to bring some more wine when they come on the boat on Saturday. Such a nice couple - even if they do make me feel a bit dumb!

My secondary school reports are rather a mixed bag! I did pretty well academically but I was a bit of a trouble-maker at times, and rather out spoken towards some of my teachers...
I remember clashing with my GCSE history teacher, because he was the biggest bore EVER. I recall that when he was teaching us about the cold war, I got so bored by his monotonous droning, that I raised my hand, and when he acknowledged me I asked "How is it that you manage to make such an interesting subject SO boring?" Needless to say, he wasn't best pleased and threatened to have me removed from his class, he didn't though and in the end when I got a good grade in my GCSE History exam, he came and put his arm around me and told me how proud he was of me!!! I felt bad for my bad behaviour towards him in the past, and I apologised, and he actually had to sniff back tears! :O

Those were seen as bad reports by the school but not by my wonderful parents - particularly my mother who took the English teacher to task over said Winter poem which I did write by myself at age 8 as I did it when my mother was in the room!

Baggy Trousers - Madness

Daughter however has had 'talks too much' on her school report every single year since the age of 4. And she has just left school...
Toots - thank you for your lovely comments!
Toots again - I'm sure you will be able to go to uni some day, if you have the heart for it. I completed my OU degree about 6 years ago - it took me 5 years and was a hard slog, as I was also working part time and bringing up my children. But it was well worth it!

I find writing reports one of the most difficult things, as they are so bloomin' anodyne these days: very little room for honesty, criticism or any degree of personal touch (for either you or the student). In many schools reports are constructed from a statement bank and you simply choose the most appropriate "blandness" from a set of 10 "blandnesses". Horrific!
Favourite euphemisms:
"Contributes enthusiastically in class" = won't stop talking
"Works best to a tight, supervised deadline" = has to be all but tied to a chair in order to get any work out of them
Anyway - oldies:
It's All About You - McFly
The Best if Yet to Come - Frank Sinatra
Black Sheep Boy - Scott Walker
Cry, Cry, Cry - Johnny Cash
The Importance of Being Idle - Oasis
Just the Way You Are - Barry White / Billy Joel
My Perfect Cousin - The Undertones
Think - Aretha Franklin

I remember one teacher, telling me that my handwriting might be better if I used my right hand! How very dare they! I have since learned that such things can lead to stammering, your mind chooses which hand you should write with as far as I am concerned and shouldn't be messed with.
I do however write very neatly now, all in block capitals, cos I can. So there Mrs Foulkes!!

In common with many others here - I was also a real chatterbox and spent much of my primary school years in the cloakroom facing the wall! My reports were a mixed bag - but I remember very clearly a parents' evening towards the end of A-levels when a young, student teacher revealed to my parents that I hadn't done a single piece of homework all year ...... ooooops!

The idea was to swing the ball round and round, hopping and jumping to keep your other foot out of the way. I think it was banned eventually as children were getting injured. He set up a trust for the school children to have a gala day - picnic and races in the Glen (Pittencrieff Park) towards the end of the school year. Once you were in the 'upper' school, you marched down the High Street, behind your school's banner, waving your flag and throwing streamers all to the strains of the Town Band, pipes and drums and a local jazz band (they were not all marching together - can you imagine the cacophony - they were separated by two or three schools). Everyone sang their hearts out - eg - 2-4-6-8 who do we appreciate T.O.W.N.H.I.L.L. TOWNHILL - (that was our school). All the businesses on the High Street would hang out their windows chucking ticker tape - what a day!
