A Swoopin' and a Screechin'

Simon Mayo|09:09 UK time, Friday, 15 July 2011

Competing sounds this morning. New albums arrived yesterday in the post and they are jostling for position. Firstly The Jayhawks 'Mockingbird Time', The Waterboys 'An Appointment with Mr Yeates' (this being WB Yeates so not a topical news reference), Nick Lowe's 'The Old Magic' and Martin Simpson's 'Purpose and Grace'. It might have been Mrs M's birthday yesterday as I mentioned but that was my parcel! And wonderful tunes from all of them, I will report back.

But the sound winning out at the moment comes from outside. The swifts are in full cry again and performing their heroics for all to see. There must be some mighty bug feast up in there because the screeching is drowning out anything I can produce from my CD player. It always resembles an aerial dog fight as they wheel and swoop around each other and the houses. I know I've mentioned them before but it's my favourite thing of the summer and miss them when they go back to southern Africa. And one more thing. Young swifts, I read, can drop their temperature and become torpid if their parents don't provide them with enough food. Remind you of anyone you know?

A quick round of applause for Nigel's Cheese and Onion Pie, a magnificent beast indeed and we have high hopes of his Mexican feast next week.

Marcus Sedgewick on Monday with his book 'White Crow'. Read the extract on these pages and let us know what you think. If you have young teen goths it might be just the ticket.

So the ALL REQUEST FRIDAY is upon us once more and the battle begins. A tip; the winning songs are always walls of sound from the beginning. They don't build or get louder, they start fast and loud and stay that way. Sometimes for 1'58", sometimes for 4'50" but they don't flag and they don't rest until they keel over. Just like the swifts really.

Have a mild-mannered and non-shouty Friday, see you after 5.

    Good Morning All :)

Nice celeb meeting stories on yesterday's blog :) I am so tempted to go and try and catch a glimpse of Alexander Skarsgard next week, because it'll probably be the best chance I ever get to see him in person.

No swifts here, lots of other feathered friends though, including a blackbird that has been through the wars as many of his feathers are missing :(

My choice today for the ARFO is as cheesy as they come, but I can't resist, and it is pretty noisy from the get go...

UNDER THE MOON OF LOVE - SHOWADDYWADDY

I am off out for a bit, but hopefully I'll have time to pop in later.

    Morning Simon and fellow bloggers

Following my discussion on the blog yesterday with Paul of Sheffield on the merits of the very fine Half Man Half Biscuit, I decided for the drive into work this morning I would forgo the pleasures of Radio 2 and Richard Madeley and play HMHB last album the wonderful CSI:Ambleside from 2008 .

I must say driving though the traffic free Yorkshire countryside with the early morning sun lighting up the moors was an absolute pleasure. A pleasure heightened by the car CD pumping out such tracks as "Evening of Swing (Has Been Cancelled)”, "Took Problem Chimp to Ideal Home Show” and "Give Us Bubble wrap"

Therefore you might presume that my request for ARFO would be the classic "99% Of Gargoyles Look Like Bob Todd“ or “Running Order Squabble Fest” a song that builds to the magnificent punch line of "you're going on after Crispy Ambulance" . I know being a realist that HMHB are not going to selected for ARFO, even though that is a pity!

Therefore my request as usual for ARFO is :-

    COMMON PEOPLE – PULP

    Morning again,

Still in the garden - the sun has moved round and is now full on my laptop keyboard,,ouch!

    ARFO as per usual:

BOHEMIAN LIKE YOU the Dandy Warhols...

comes in mighty fine at the start, no waiting for the hook Lord Ammo!!

    OR

I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

    - heard this the other day while in a 'trendy' clothes shop - and thought 'what a perfect ARFO' !! So here it is, suggested - the rest is up to Lord Ammo and DT team.

I may even send by Muggle-mail, just to press the point home..

    Have a nice day y'all

  • Comment number 4.

Just a quick poop in with my ARF, it would be ironic if it were to be played today as not a chance of hearing it, although there is the i player thingy wotnot...

    Hi Simon and everyone.

Thanks all for your praise of my story yesterday, glad you enjoyed it. I have another cracker about my failed 1st driving test...its a conversation stopper if ever I heard one!

And Simon are swifts those birdies with the forked tail? Or am I thinking Swallows?

Anyway tip noted ....check out these bad boy ARF's?

    1. TOO MUCH TOO YOUNG - Little Angels ( the first support act in 1992 on that BA Tour).

    2. MOVE ON UP - Curtis Mayfield

    3. TWO TRIBES - Frankie Goes to Hollywood

    4. HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS - Bob Seager

    5, MORE THAN A FEELING - Boston

Oh well must jump to it.

    Have a good day.

    Laters.

    Morning everyone,

I got a bit bored with my blog name so decided to have a change - hope you all approve. It's actually a bit of a nod to Mr C who has a particularly sweet tooth (I'm firmly of the opinion he was an ant in a former life). We usually have Saturday Kitchen on at the weekend - we decided if he was ever on the show his food heaven would be 'cake' and food hell would be 'no cake' - can't argue with that.

Anyways, my ARFO suggestion this week is:

Gimme Some Good Lovin' - The Spencer Davis Group

I think that ticks all of the boxes...

Have a satisfying Friday one and all.

    Good Morning All

    Simon & Team –

    Please may I request

THE BEAT - by The Look ?

A wall of sound from the beginning. It doesn’t build or get louder, it starts fast and loud and stays that way.

It is the most rhythmicallyinspiringsteeringwheelanddashboardthumping song from the very first second to the very last..

    AND – as I’ve said before –

IF IT WASN’T FOR THE BEAT – THERE WOULD BE NO MUSIC AT ALL!

Morning Simon, Team and fellow blogpoppets,

Simon, I loved your description of the swifts. I, too, feel the loss of our summer visiting birds when they fly south for winter. Talking of our winged friends, the wonderful Mobile Tooth Fairy seems to be having a wonderful holiday in France, I hope that she spots the elusive but magnificent hoopoe.

Now, I have taken on board your ARF tips, Simon. And so proffer the following for your delectation:

    Geno by Dexy's Midnight Runners

    Beat Surrender by The Jam

Rocking All Over The World by Status Quo

Have a wonderful weekend all, and fingets crossed that a blogger gets lucky at

    5-05!!

#5 it would be ironic if Boston were finally played, as I have requested that for ages!!

RE good supporting bands (I think this could run and run) I enjoyed the Boomtown Rats supporting Tom Petty in 1977 and their (the Rats') version of Route 66 was voted the best out of the two bands' versions by the Birmingham Evening Mail....they were fairly 'raw' to be fair, but that was the way music was in those days.

Normally watched standing up, elbowed by pogo-ing crowds, on sticky carpets (carpets if you were lucky)- none of this 'grandad rock' as I call it, where nowadays folks sit politely and watch a big screen in a huge arena, and part with £60 each towards the Rock band's pension fund...

Rant over, I'll get my coat (studded leather jacket, natch)

  • Comment number 10.

Morning all. Now that term has ended and I have 7 halcyon weeks of summer stretching ahead of me, I find myself relaxed and in the mood for a rockin' ARF.

My suggestion: You Give Love a Bad Name - Bon Jovi (fills all of Simon's stated requirements)

Zoe - please tell me more about the gorgeous AS and how to catch a glimpse ......

Off to get my hair done now - get all the grey covered that this term has put there!

    Hi again Simon and bloggers

We don't have any Swifts here but we do have a cute pigeon I rescued from a neighbour's cat nearly three weeks ago and have nursed him from this poor wee injured thing..... https://farm7.static.flickr.com/6121/5939709752_91975b117e_b.jpg

How about this summery song while the weather is so good?

No inspiration today, so no suggestion from me.

Simon - when we were on holiday in Kefalonia last month the house martins were still feeding their chicks and so were swooping and chattering all the time; and we were lucky enough to have a nest with 4 chicks in near our room, so we got to see the parents flying in a feeding them and seeing them testing their wings - it only needed Chris Packham around to make it perfect!

Tortie, I'm slightly worried that he's a bit too tame for a pigeon because he will sit on my hand if I hold it out for him! My husband thinks I'm bonkers, but I had to look after him and thankfully the cat dropped him when my dogs barked at it, otherwise the cat would probably have killed it!

I kept him in a big box until he was stronger, then I put him in an old cockatiel cage where he had a perch and could sit in the garden and watch other birds. I presume/hope he will always come back and visit us and I have no idea where he came from, unless the cat carried him from a distance!

Anyway, he's looking fit and strong now after his sad start in life, but his tail doesn't look very long... maybe they don't get full length tails until they're older!

SM said earlier (via Mosh) that any AC/DC promotes good comment. Why not let's keep it going this ARF? Ticks all those boxes.....

Good Morning Simon, team, NYM and Blogpoppets

I've been watching the swifts recently as well, mainly in the evenings when I take my (late) dog walk. Amazing to watch their aerobatic manouvers! I've nearly walked into a lamp-post a couple of times...

I love Friday blogs - it's great to be able to saunter in at any point during the morning to make my suggestions. Although I have to say the mensh chasing hasn't been quite so frantic of late. So, for the ARFO wall of sound, hows about:

SOMETHING ABOUT YOU by Level 42

Or alternatively I'd be quite happy to hear:

NO MORE HEROES by The Stranglers

This is going to sound like the saddest thing EVER, but I just think Alexander Skarsgard is wonderful. He is an amazing actor and a generous and lovely human being. You all know how tragic my life is at times, and True Blood is one of the VERY few things that I really look forward to watching, it is something for me to look forward to each week (for the 12 weeks it's on) I have chatted to many others fans from all around the world, and the AS/Eric Northman fandom is (mostly) another happy place for me to pop in and out of when I have the time.

I am not someone who goes celeb chasing, far from it! But I would like the opportunity to meet Mr Skarsgard, and thank him in person for all the viewing pleasure, the friends I have made in fandom and for giving me something to look forward to with new series' of True Blood, and the films he will be starring in.

Like I said, it might sound a bit pathetic, but it's why any of us follow any musician, actor, other famous person, isn't it? Because we admire their work and would love the chance to be able to tell them so in person, if we could.

The guy next door ran out of petrol for his works van so he called round just before 8 this morning to ask if I could take him to get some petrol which put me completely off schedule which was tight anyway.

I was going to request 500 miles by the Proclaimers as the boys and I are off for a day trip to London tomorrow and we'll probably feel like we've walked 500 miles by the time we get home again. It's the first time for the boys in the big smoke and only my second time - we're so looking forward to it.

Off to make supper of layered pancakes - spinach & cottage cheese - garlicky tom. sauce.

Then MIRANDA! Life is good. God is good!

    Where's our Revski?

    Happy holiday Gazza!

Billie, not done much this week. Other things getting in the way. Will endeavour to make time at the weekend. Much practice needed ;-)

Missed the show. Was catching up with a friend I hadn't seen for a while. Was lovely tosee her but her kids are exhausting.

Miranda not on BBC Scotland but have found it on channel 989. CSI Miami first.

Nothing exciting for me at the weekend. Hope to catch up with you all at some point.

    Enjoy!

    #55 Well done Tiggs.

I have to put my things together ready for tomorrow - off marshalling a car park at a school circus. Yeeeee-haaaa. Meanwhile, Corrie's shaping up brilliantly tonight. Will Leanne be alright? Will she lose the baby? Will Sophie realise what a plonker she is? And, most importantly of all, will SOMEBODY DO SOME WORK!?!?! Wish I could get paid for gassing like them. The answer to all this and much, much less coming up in 15 minutes.

    Good Morning All

Not on page 2 yet? Must try harder...

It's dull and windy here in Cambs this morning, and rain is forecast for later. I think I've overslept and woken up in Autumn.

This weekend is our last at home before our hols - next weekend we're on the boat then the following one we're going to a wedding. So I'll be filling my day with domestic tasks, writing lists and failing to get organised.

Malcolm - hope it stays dry for you. Marshalling cars for a school circus - I'm picturing you standing in the middle of the car park wearing a ringmaster's outfit and carrying a whip, with the cars in a circle around you. LOL!

Billie - Simes?? Where did that name come from? LOL again!

No doubt I'll be pooping back later. In the meantime, have a good day one and all.

Very heavy - very welcome - rain overnight. Chilly, breezy & grey now.

    Playing indoors methinks.

    Have good ones.

Windy and rainy here too - so lots of housework being done : (

    Hope everyone's OK.

Hi All - hope everyone is having Nicetimes ...............

We had more rain this morning - really needed - this afternoon the sun is shining in a beautiful blue sky although it's breezy and chilly. Might light the stove later.

My Birthday Celebrations seem to be neverending. Someone who forgot has sent me the most beautiful bouquet today. I'm quite glad he forgot!

The Gorjus Mr. Barrowman is on tonight. We shan't watch it live cos it cuts across my playing time. Then there's the Guy Chambers Pop Song Prog. Noisettes tonight I believe. Don't know how to spell it. Don't know how to pronounce it!

Supper - Penne, Blue Cheese, Walnuts & Crusty Bread. A couple of Pancakes left over from last night - add Bananas & Ice Cream and a Choc. Sauce and you've got a pudding!

    What's not to like................................... ?

I seem to have a spare space on my newspaper shelving, this morning. With what should this gap be filled, I wonder? The Sunday Times? Hmm, perhaps not. Too dissimilar to that spaces previous occupant, and perhaps tainted slightly by association. The Sunday Mirror? No, my suspicion is that people that read NOTW would have already compared those two titles, and chosen the now defunct one. Some will swap, I am sure, but does that warrant giving the Mirror an extra facing? The People? Ditto the Mirror. The Mail, The Express? Both considered, but dismissed. The Sunday Telegraph, I am sure, would be mortified were I to offer it as a substitute for what it would consider an oily rag. The spare space, and the coveted double facing, goes to THE SUNDAY POST. If only for the simple fact that it contains a free copy of The Dandy. That should placate some of those with furrowed brows, wondering what they can now spend their Sunday quid on, don't you think?

    Have lovely Sundays, Each!

    Good morning!

The Sunday Post! Gazza and I had a conversation about the very same not so long ago. Been a long time since I've read it. Hope it's a best seller for you PoS.

Rain held off long enough for me to see The Pierces on SFTW this am. Lovely ladies, beautiful singing, great sense of humour. Sat dish stopped working before they started cooking. Let's hope Mr Sky can fix it tomorrow. Suspect I may have to follow The Apprentice on twitter tonight. Best comedy on tv at the mo IMO.

What is everyone else doing today? Is it still raining across the country? in France? But not in Australia? Isn't fb fab for keeping in touch world wide.

Well it's certainly raining here, Mo. Heavy & Persistent.

Enforced idleness methinks. I mean it's far too wet to be ironing!

Not too bad up in West Yorkshire today , only a small amount of rain.

Which is good as I have spent the last few hours being driven around a local market town by daughter 2 who is leaning to drive at the present. The things us dads have too do !!

Now in the kitchen cooking and listening to the marvellous Jarvis Cocker on 6Music.

    Hi All -

If you were here and you looked out and you ignored the Honeysuckle and the Buddleia and the Summer Bedding and the leaves on the ground you would think it was Autumn. Driving Winds. Torrential Rain. Nice to be safe indoors (thinking of those without a home).

We've done everything earlier tonight. Well, Simes is not on and the weather has misled us so we lit the wood-burner and put the lamps on at about 4.30. I played early - (Sorry Mr. O'Grady) - and now supper is made and in t'oven - Stuffed Marrow which is not at all Autumnal - it's always a special dish around my Birthday.

Didn't really enjoy Noisettes last night. Looking forward to Mr. Barrowman on iThingy.

We've had a lovely weekend. Hope you have too.

    Love

#68 Billie... as well as being Lucie's mum I am also Lottie's mum! Not really thought about changing it, since I've got used to hearing Simon say it now and again! ;o)

It was something I had quickly thought up as a user name, like HappyHornet, Tortie-Cat and MobileToothFairy, without using my real name, which is generally not advisable on public forums! :o))
